@HomeInWildSpaces the best defense against man or beast is a firearm. If you love being in the outdoors exploring, fishing, hiking, or even hunting you need to be proficient in the use and maintenance of your firearms. Training with a firearm may cost you thousands of dollars but it could save your life against man or beast. You can choose to carry bear spray but I choose to carry a firearm.

@davesmith7432, I'm accustomed to these types of responses, but what is remarkable to me is how often they are unjustified. If you pay attention to photos I use to discuss the problem with political terrorists misusing bear spray, you will note that the photos demonstrate misuse by both the "right" and the "left".
I appreciate your passion, but I think it's led you to a demonstrably false conclusion-as passions typically do. I'm simply raising awareness about misuse. I do not see that as political.

When my wife and I hiked through Yellowstone backcountry we had bear spray AND a gun. Interestingly enough even though we saw a grizzly on the trip off in the distance it was much less of a threat to us versus a giant herd of bison that almost surrounded us, as they wanted to graze the grass field we were in. We got the bear spray and gun ready as they drew closer but were able to slowly sneak out of a small gap in the herd. It was good to know we had layers of defense but even then things could have gone bad fast and probably not in our favor.

You are so right. The social fear of bears has eclipsed respect and the justified trepidation of other animals often considered "cute". I love a good moose or bison encounter, but I never loose sight of the fact that both can be temperamental and dangerous.

In the Infantry we have a concept called 'Defense In Depth' or a layered defense. The take away here is the same: Have multiple defensive points. When I am in Wyoming, I have Bear Spray as my preferred defense, (because I don't want to kill a bear unless it tries to kill me first,) my 10mm pistol as my second, and my Bowie knife as my third line of defense.
That's just for hiking. If hunting one of us carries a rifle and the other carries a shotgun with slugs, in addition to spray, a pistol and a blade.
That could all fail potentially, but it allows us to punch well above our weight in Griz Country.

I live this, always carry a pepper spray because you dont want to kill something or someone just because it presents a threat, if it presents a threat depending on the level maybe harassingly then deploy, if the first line of defense fails and threat increases to imminent bodily harm to death.....then i use my handgun, if second layer of defense fails because as you all know adrenaline is a hell of a thing and something or someone in it can keep going then my trusty boker knife or any high quality knife as a third is good. Great video! Now my two cents. I spent 7 years on two US Army tours in Alaska. On my first tour everyone was recommending the 44mag revolver as "Bear medicine!". I carried one for several months until a gentleman pointed out that a 30-30 has more stopping power then that 44mag. He had a lot more experience than I hunting dangerous game and what he said made sense. I got and started carrying an Itica 37 12ga police with extended magazine after that, loaded with slugs. The Eskimo scouts we worked with and lived basically among them said to put your hands up and back away quitly saying "I come in peace brother bear!", never wanted to try that technique out myself. Now remember in that time bear spray was not a thing, if it was I would for sure carry it with my 12ga. Now my personal up close encounter with a large bear was in the small town we lived in a fairly large brown bear wandered onto the highway leading out of Anchorage and was hit by no less than two cars and one pickup, demolishing all three. Serviving that he lay bleeding and still alive until a state trooper with cahunas the size of basketballs calmly walked up to him and placing his 357 revolver bihind the bears ear dispatched it, they are unbelievably strong. I personallgy clocked one doing 35kts through alders taller than a man like they were nothing. You can't outrun them. I remember a reporter interviewing a man who had been badly malled abd asking "You had a gun, why didn't you shot him?" Where apon the gentleman said " I tried to but he ate my gun!" Bottom line carry both spray and a gun capable of doing what needs to be done and practice with them till it becomes second nature. Be safe out there!...

Thanks Gatlinburg. And bear spray is faulty and what to do when the bear and wind are coming from same direction. Seen too many stories of sorry failure. A hand full of failures. I thought there were only a handful of bear attacks. You're being negligent. Bears are known to eat expended cans to get to left over spray and that they'll roll in spray areas. A strategically placed hatched blow, at the point, may make the difference in the bear backing off of you once upon you. Hatchets are also great utility tools to have in the wild/wilderness. But I suppose you could just surrender and lay there and let the bear eat you because the bear spray didn’t work or the shots from the firearm missed or didn’t stop it. Go for it Hugh.

The topic of safety in bear country is so polarizing and controversial to so many people that it takes time to sufficiently discuss the details and explain why every adult should carry and be proficient with bear spray and those who carry a gun should be sufficiently proficient and responsible in handling them.
In truth I don't encourage people to carry a firearm. They are very effective tools in the right hands.

Great video. It's not a competition, but when people say they need a gun for protection in the woods it's an immediate confession that they are strangers to wildlands and very likely suffer from Dunning-Kruger effect with firearms - thinking their half-assed once a year playing at a range makes them weapons experts.
In Canada we are not allowed to carry handguns, but I'd much rather a can of bear spray anyway. When hunting, it would be MUCH more preferable close range than a long rifle - I have zero confidence I could hit a charging bear with my scoped .308.
As for in camp, a 12-gauge with slugs is the ultimate safety blanket. It is the only thing with close range stopping power for smiting thine ursine enemy if it tries opening your tent like a candy wrapper. I'll still sleep with my bear spray in arm's reach (FYI most have a fluorescent part on trigger so you can always find it!), but in the supremely unlikely event of that horrific night-time predation attack, that shotgun could be your best friend.

@@blantant there are very few places on a bear that will cause instant death, nevermind hitting them during a charge. And even a fatal shot can take up to 20 seconds to register with the brain that PS bear, you're dead! In a charge and maul 20 seconds is a loooong time. To an intent bear, accustomed to pain when fighting off rivals or wolves, they can plow through without seeming to notice the sting of a bullet.
Pepper spray acts on the senses - sight is affected dramatically, as is smell. It tends to be noticed and responded to instantly, because loss of senses makes the bear vulnerable, and they know that. If they can't see or smell the inclination - most of the time - is to get away from the danger, not press on. I believe that is a big part of why it is so effective. Nothing is 100% guaranteed.

You're getting at the most important and reliable deterrent-being with other people.
However, your odds are best if you have multiple people who stand their ground and use bear spray. To my knowledge there is not a single case of a bear making contact with a person when two or more people stand their ground.
A firearm is an unquestionable asset in the right hands. A warning shot can and often does deter a bear before they come within range of bear spray. And of course the appropriate gun in the right hands can end a threat once and for all if necessary. But it's really best to use bear spray first and in unison.
The clear exception being a strong head wind.

The fear is clearly not “mostly unjustified” for those that frequently spend time in bear country. There are many firearms bear defenses that are not reported because people don’t want to deal with the law.

    • @HomeInWildSpaces

Lack of reporting is a factor across the board, including with bear spray. The data isn't perfect, but that gap often leads people to fill the blank with whatever fits their choses world view.
I respectfully disagree. The fear of bears is entirely overblown. That's coming from somewhat who spends a great deal of time in bear country and has encountered many, many bears.
That does not however change the fact that people should be prepared. But part of that preparation requires tempering our social acquired fears.

I am well aware of the effectiveness of bear spray but wind is a constant here in NW Wyoming. Downwind situations are far less likely because your scent is carried ahead of you and a bear will most likely smell you coming and be gone. Upwind encounters are far more likely but will severely hinder your bear spray. For that reason I choose firearms but as you pointed out, anyone who makes that choice must be highly proficient with firearms. You also made the point that your best defense is situational awareness and having said the same thing many times myself, I couldn't possibly agree more. I think one should also recognize and accept the fact that it is a risk to enter bear country and that despite all your precautions, the worst can happen. It's part of the adventure of living in wild places and if you're not adventurous enough to accept that risk, maybe it's best if you get your thrills riding roller coasters or playing video games. I've encountered grizzlies before but I've yet to be charged. I hope it stays that way but I'm prepared if it doesn't.

You should carry both if you're in grizzly bear country its a fact, that's
    the age-old
" Id rather have it and not need it, then need it, and not have it"
    situation.
I was asked many years ago to be a shooter for protecting scientists from wild game in Alaska and more,so the scientists can take a core samples and other types samples so on, so forth.
The first thing you try to do, is dissuade the bear from trying to attack the people, AKA scare the bear off by warning shot, helicopter fly by, bear spray, yelling.
if that doesn't work, you use Force.
(So bear spray would definitely be something you should bring always) always bring spray, but if that doesn't work then sometimes you need Force.
If you're still not going to bring a gun with you then bring a couple bottles of actual bear spray and hopefully thats enough to get away.
I bet bear spray would work on a cougar as well FYI tho iv never heard if anyone has triedit or not, there is alot of them around here too. I'm glad you said that because a 12 gauge is my first option, and my grandfather made me fall in love with 300 Winchester magnum.tho typically i carry a hand daily if im further out away i have my 12 typically.

the weapon isn't really as important as making sure you can use it efficiently and effectively useing it.
That you are comfortable and confident with it.
A hunting rifle is probably not a great Home Defense tool, but if you were to use it properly, you could mitigate bad accident and other people being hurt, by using self defense rounds, lower velocity rounds, or ones specifically for expansion not penitration for self defense.

I have only ever seen bears, and have not worried much about it. On a couple of occasions I found animal tracks outside the tent in the morning and wondered what happened a meter away from my head while I was snoring. Actually those experiences have left me wondering about the purpose of sleeping under a thin sheet of nylon. Come to think of it, I haven't camped in a tent much since then.
There is a story of a woodsman who had a grizzly as a companion, apparently raising it from a cub. One day a spoked or mad Grizzly came and killed them both. Perhaps I am off base, but I just don't see a cloud of paper spray stopping such a motivated bear. Albeit the man lived in the woods for decades before that happened, so perhaps a person can hike for lifetimes without such an encounter.
Nor can I imagine calmly getting a pistol out its holster, flipping off the safety, lining up shots, and putting little holes in a charging 800kg animal in a manner that at least one shot hits a magic spot that causes the bear to instantly drop in its tracks. Or in the panic of controlling a powerful pistol from jumping around such that more than one shot hits the animal at all. And you are right, hitting a moving target from an arbitrary position where one might find oneself, is a lot harder than hitting a stationary target. Such a thing is hard to practice. Swinging a rifle around and hitting the target seem even harder, but if accomplished more likely to drop the animal.
I guess I would aim to send the message through the snout or between the eyes, while timing the up and down bounces of the animal if any, but you mentioned people making chest shots and piercing lungs. I am impressed by the wardens who in the night were able to bring down a bear with a rifle shot (while heading to help the victims of a bear attack), but those guys were probably walking with guns raised ready.
But then again, a person could be run over while crossing the street. "Officer I sprayed the car, but it kept coming...." We aren't walking around carrying car disincentives. At some point there are things that a person can't worry about too much.
Perhaps someday we will genetically modify bears to stay away from people.
Then there is that story of the guy in Vietnam who went for a piss and was taken down by a fn tiger. Tigers charging in the night. Perhaps he should have carried tiger spray.

Very good video. Thank you. I've hunted in grizzly country in AK and BC and thankfully never had a problem, but I share the notion the best way to go is to carry both-the most powerful firearm that you can shoot accurately and bear spray. I've even thought that carrying a compact back-up pistol with hard cast bullets might not be too bad of an idea since in a fair number of reported bear attacks the bear slams into the person and knocks the guy's pistol out of reach and the mauling begins. For me, it would be nice to have both tools or even better- the three tools. Of course, I get it, people want to cut weight that they are carrying or humping long distances in a backpack while hunting or hiking, but all things considered, life saving equipment in bear country should not be discounted.

Absolutely right! Here's my own post which I put up prior to seeing yours: THIS VIDEO IS THE WORST FORM OF MISINFORMATION ON UA-cam! Worse than that, the narrator purports to be chastising people for "misinformation" with his "false dichotomy" statement. He begins by pointing out that bear spray has a "90% effective!" success rate. Well, that's UTTERLY MISLEADING! Here's why: Someone who possesses bear spray is far far more likely to use it on a "merely curious" grizzly. When hit with bear spray, a merely curious bear is likely to be deterred. If you use bear spray on a merely curious bear and it flees--no harm, no foul. With this in mind, people are likely to deploy bear spray in any given situation, knowing that no bear is going to die in the encounter. ON THE OTHER HAND, a man armed with a firearm KNOWS that if he discharges that firearm into a bear, then he is going to have some very serious answers to provide to law enforcement (and to others). Indeed, we are taught that firearms are a lethal "last resort," and not simply a go-away-bear device. THEREFORE, the man with the gun is far far more likely to NOT use his gun on a "merely curious" bear, but only on those bears which demonstrate that they are angry, charging, or otherwise seriously intending to inflict harm! THEREFORE, in any given situation, when a truly angry bear is hit--either by bear spray or by a firearm--it is more likely to continue its attack, oftentimes successfully. In the end, we are left with reports of 90% success rate using bear spray on both curious and angry bears, but an often lower success rate using firearms on those "almost-always angry" bears. THE VIDEO'S COMPARISION IS ABSURD, and it shows that these so-called "experts" are ignorant to the extreme.

There are times when bear spray is not very effective. Bear sprays are considered a pesticide by the U.S. government and must be registered with the EPA. In doing so, the government requires that bear spray can contain no more than 1 - 2% O.C. ( oleoresin capsicum) which is a natural oil found in plants, including cayenne peppers and chillies. The ingredient that causes the burning sensation. This makes bear spray relatively weak. Compare 2% bear spray to a good pepper spray. Those can be as strong as 23% O.C. and some even stronger.
Unfortunately, most pepper sprays typically only shoot about 6-12 feet. Some more, some less. A grizzly can travel 12 feet in less than a second at full charge. Bear spray is made to shoot about 25-30 feet and usually in a large fog pattern. Pepper spray's lack the distance for bear IMO. If you get a chance to have a look at a container of bear spray check the label. You'll see it contains no more than 2% O.C
Another problem with bear spray is when it's windy. The spray may not go where you're intending it to go. Especially if the wind is blowing directly at or even in the direction of the person using the bear spray. If the wind blows the spray at you it can end up burning the eyes and throat of the person trying to defend against the bear, which may temporarily disable the person. That could make it very hard to open your eyes or breathe and to see the bear and defend yourself. Not a good thing if a dangerous bear is coming at you.
Bear spray is under pressure and sometimes does not work well at elevations over 7000 feet. Bear spray *does* seem to work against bears that are just curious or maybe only giving a false charge. Bear spray does *not* work as well against a bear that is guarding a kill, especially if you unknowingly get between the bear and it's food source, or if a mother bear feels that you're a threat to her cubs, even if you're not close to the cubs, or if you accidentally happen to surprise a bear. Especially a sleeping bear.
I know there are people that for whatever reason are not comfortable with firearms or maybe don't feel very proficient with one. If that's you and there's no way you see yourself carrying a firearm then absolutely carry bear spray. It won't always work in every situation, but it is better than not having anything.
I have friends in Alaska. They tell me that most people (residents) don't bother with bear spray, preferring to carry a rifle, shotgun with slugs, or a large caliber handgun with heavy, hard-cast bullets.
A good option in bear country would be to carry both a firearm and bear spray. If you carry a firearm practice with it. A lot. Make noise when you hike. Most bears will turn and leave when they hear people. Oh, and don't hike alone.

I have been arguing this exact assessment for many years. I grew up, hunted and guided in grizzly bear country. I feel I am more than proficient with a handgun but still carry bear spray as my first option. My main point I make to the handgun only proponents is simply this, the only way to stop a charging bear is to break it down, brain, spine, both shoulders etc. On a charging bear the most applicable are brain and spine, target sizes ranging from an apple to a softball which is fairly easy to hit at the range but not when the target is bouncing toward you at 15-30 mph and your system is charged with adrenaline.
Thank you for putting this info and video together.

How do you deicide what to use. If you have the opportunity to see the bear’s temperament at the time, you could …. IDK. Hope you never need to make that decision.

Your videos are fantastic! The ones I've watched so far anyway. I do have one comment on his one however. You mentioned, something to the effect, that stepping backwards when a bear is advancing (besides risking a fall) may show the bear that you are weak. I am aware one should hold their ground in a non-defensive encounter, but my understanding is that in the case of a defensive encounter, stepping backward can signal to the bear that you are not a threat, for instance with a mother grizzly in defence of cubs, where you need to do whatever it takes to show her that you are not a threat,.

More anti-gun. Too much bad info in this video which could get someone killed. Just responding to one claim "There is no reason to not carry both". Of course there is. 1) In a charge you won't have time to use both 2) trying to be prolific on two systems is harder than trying to be prolific in one 3) the potential lost time while trying to decide which to use during a charge could be fatal. 4) trying to be proficient in two systems, leaves you less proficient at both compared to specific training in one. I'll stop there.

Would you ever trust a mechanic who said, "I'm really good with screwdrivers so I don't use wrenches"? I expect not.
But, I understand your point(s), and I appreciate that you have taken the time to voice your feedback. While there is crossover, the fact is that bear spray and the right firearm in the right hands, do not occupy the exact same defensive niche. More than that, bear spray is far easier to master and use successfully.
It's because of that ease of use and effectiveness that there's no good reason to not carry and know how to use bear spray. The time it takes to master bear spray in no way detracts from the time needed to master using an appropriate gun.
As far as knowing which to choose and when. I covered that in this and the follow up video. It's not that complicated. If a person is waffling between options at the time of a charge, all that means is they were not prepared. It's not a compelling argument for not being proficient with both.

So bear spray for sure. I spend a great deal of time in grizzly country in all seasons solo. I have difficulty being social, so solo. When I dirt bike I carry bear spray. When I hike or bike outside national park I carry 44 mag mare's leg in a quick draw vorn pack, bear spray and clip point straight blade belt knife. I also play music on a small speaker while I'm in close bush to make some noise. Most of these precautions are phychological and there to allow me to relax. Keep your eyes open and don't wear ear buds or headphones. I have practiced drawing and firing this gun, a type that you didn't mention. A Chiappa Scorpio, 5 rounds, lever action. Bullet can handle the wind... Also check your expiration day on the spray, because if it is after, and you meet a bear, it's probably your expiration date too... =D Gun, well, as long as you have the right ammo and you know what you are doing, you can put down Grizly with .22 LR, but only if you are a proffecional. Otherwhise have at least 10mm handgun with solit ammo (steel wad ammo, not a hollow point or round nose fmj leed). 9mm will work to, as long as it's right ammo and you are know what you are doing. Try to find bear proof jacket... =D In addition, ask your friendly FFA agent if you can carry a bear spray on the flight, when traveling to a bear country... And when arrive, try to find a bear spray in the store, if you are lucky for how much?... It's simpler to fly with a gun in correctly setup case and if you lawfully set it up, there should be no issues on the plane and buy ammos in a bear country, could be cheaper and more available than spray.... Remember, ammo don't expire, unless you used them...

Whereas if someone had the right gun for this job like a magazine fed semiautomatic rifle in a reasonable caliber for this situation, e.g., .308, 458 socom, etc. Or a magazine fed semiautomatic shotgun (e.g., saiga, or fostech), then I think the chances of success would be much greater assuming the shooter is trained at all.

Why is this guy the only guy who uses common sense when it comes to this topic? I'm a Texas native who recently moved to Alaska. I'm a blank slate when it comes to this topic so when I moved I asked as many people as I could about what precautions I should take in bear country. I asked everyone from hunting guides, lifelong native Alaskans, the biologist who works for the base, REI employees, and taxidermist. I never asked if I should carry a gun or bear spray because I didn't want to influence how they answered. Personally the way I see it I always carry a gun when I'm hiking/hunting/camping anyways so as far as the gun side of things go it was only a matter of getting somethings more appropriate for bears, and carrying a can of bear spray isn't hard to do so I don't see any reason not to carry even if you don't expect to use it. As I asked around I was surprised by how many people see it as a one or the other question. I didn't grow up around guns so when I did start getting into shooting it kinda helped me see through a lot of the BS that gun owners parrot without questioning the logic behind the claims. I see so much of the same type of nonsense passed around when talking about guns for bear defense. It focuses so much on the gun/caliber but totally disregards individual skill, confidence, etc.
I've been in Alaska about six months now and I've read and watched so much content on guns and spray and I can't say my research has helped me feel any more prepared than before I moved here. Just a couple of things to consider here. If bear spray has about a 30 foot range, how long does it take a charging bear to close that distance on you? Can it even stop?. There are several videos on youtube showing bears beginning to race at people from long distances, if that was the scenario, I'd much rather have an option to start defending myself at 100yds, 50 yds, 25 yards. Don't get me wrong I believe bear spray has its uses in certain scenarios, but in others it does not remotely give the options a suitable firearm can.

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  5 місяців тому

Anyone who shoots at a bear “defensively” at ranges of 20+ yards needs to stay out of the backcountry.
Warning shots at that range are fine, but shooting with the intent to kill or wound an animal at the ranges you have described demonstrates a remarkable lack of understanding regarding bears and bear safety.
Bears can stop on a dime, and have been repeatedly stopped on a dime by the successful use of bear spray.
Guns are a tools, but they become a liability in the hands of someone who is not sufficiently proficient in the operation of their firearm AND their responsible use in the backcountry.
The same goes for bear spray. They are tools, with proper and improper uses. Period.

    • @fiveowaf454
      @fiveowaf454 5 місяців тому

@@HomeInWildSpaces I was not advising that you should shoot a bear at long distance out of hand, but have seen videos of situations where leaving it until the bear was 60 feet way would be utterly ridiculous. I would start with warning shots, they have been effective for me with mountain lions, but again have seen, where warning shots have not deterred bears. I do not have a desire to unnecessarily kill a bear, but honestly if you insist to take no action against a bear running that will take effect until it gets with in 30 feet, you can have no credibility at all. In that distance may be the bear can stop, but there is also a response time to the pepper spray to factor in. At 30 mph the bear is covering 44 feet per second, in a serious meaningful attack, I don't see how in less than a second the spray will stop the bear making contact at which point the pain induced will just be interpreted as it's victim fighting back. Conversely there are documented attacks where a firearm has been able to end an attack when the bear is actually on top of the person. I would suggest you watch some other bear interactions here on UA-cam and even some of the African game videos, with charging male lions, cape buffalo, elephants etc. to broaden your knowledge, to me you see things with a tunnel vision that doesn't allow you to consider all the scenarios that can occur in the real world.

I have watched the videos and read the accounts you suggest. I don't deny the effectiveness or the occasional necessity of firearms in capable and responsible hands. That is not and never was in dispute.
Nor did I "insist on [taking] no action against a bear...until it gets within thirty feet" as you have suggested. I again reiterate that I deal in substance. Straw-man misrepresentations are not substantive.

    • @fiveowaf454

@@HomeInWildSpaces You certainly did insist no action should be taken within 20 yards and followed that with arrogantly stating that anyone doing so had no place in the back country and knew nothing about bears. At 20 yards you have 1.37 seconds of time, assuming it's a relatively slow bear at 30mph, to react and for your bear spray to take full effect. You contradict yourself and go in circles, whilst implying everyone, but yourself is some sort of fool for thinking something else. If you only have bear spray, how can they take any action before the bear is close to 30 feet? You should review the comments here more fully, it's important to entertain the possibility that when so many disagree with you, you just might be wrong in some areas. Ultimately, everyone gets to make their own choice based on their own conclusions and their abilities. I put my faith in a 44 magnum revolver or a 45-70 lever action rifle as the best options in an actual attack as opposed to a bear getting too close undecided on it's intentions where bear spray is certainly a viable option. Your situation might be different because as you clearly illustrated in you range videos, you haven't learned how to use a lever action rifle yet. A couple of points on technique that I find of interest is that PH's on dangerous hunts in Africa never have a sling on their double rifle, because it should never be shouldered and it eliminates the temptation to do so. I've also seen them do something that takes huge self control, but it very logical and that is to drop to take a knee as the animal charges, ensuring that they fire in line, and parallel to, the animal, ensuring it is hit as opposed to the tendency to fire over the animal as it is closing animal. One video stands out where a guy does that with a Cape Buffalo bearing down at close range, that really takes some nerve, but also something that is important in dangerous situations and that is to already have clear in your mind how to react.

A good video and I agree with your final conclusion. There are some things that are not properly represented. Keeping your firearm unloaded (empty chamber i.e. "not cocked and locked") indicates you have a lack of skill and/or lack of experience. "You often don't have time to vassilate between options". Precisely my point. Your rifle shooting technique and your statement of your experience indicates a lack of training and skill. That has nothing to do with the efficacy of bear spray but it does have an effect of the efficacy of the firearm. Yes, I believe bear spray is the better tool, for bears. A bear afraid of humans teaches other bears, win-win. Wounded bears are very, very dangerous. Yes, firearms require more skill to be effective. Yes, firearms have a greater potential of consequence if negligently discharged. I would suggest examining one statistic you overlooked. Thousands of times more people carry firearms than those carrying bear spray. Therefore, the likelihood of accidents are higher so comparing them as equally likely is a false comparison. The solution is to not only promote bear spray use but to demonstrate proper firearm use.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll discuss carrying with one in the chamber in coming videos.
Also, I really wasn't comparing the frequency of negligent discharges with either bear spray or guns. Rather I was objecting to the hosts of a UA-cam channel suggesting "inadvertent activation" was unique to bear spray. It's a slight of hand I see often where commentators try and pretend one issue or hazard is unique to one deterrent and not another.
I think you are probably right that the greater number of firearms or rather people carrying firearms makes cases of negligence with a firearm more common. I'm just trying to encourage people to respect their tools and handle them appropriately.
It seems fair to conclude that we are in near, if not total agreement. Thanks a ton for watching and sharing your thoughts! They are received with gratitude.

If you referencing the attack in Banff, I hope you check out the analysis video I produced: Deadliest grizzly bear attack Banff National Park | Life-saving lessons #wildspaces #banff #attack
      ua-cam.com/video/p7rgHvIIc_c/v-deo.html
It’s nearly identical to an attack that occurred in 2005 when a husband and wife were killed in Alaska. Except the victims in that case had a 45-70 lever action rifle.
Both are potentially very effective tools, but neither is a genie in a bottle. Sometimes the answer is more complex than gun or bear spray.
I hope you’ll check out the full video.

@HomeInWildSpaces thanks I will check out that video out. I'm not saying one is better than the other, but I do believe we should have a choice to choose for ourselves or, better yet, have the ability to have them both on our person. However, here in Canada, it is not legal for the average Canadian to carry a handgun for protection, and now it's illegal to purchase any new handguns. Rifles may be carried, however, not on provincial Parklands.

Sir,excellent coverage for American hunters, but not Canada &the residence of Dr.Herreo an advocate of banning bear hunting.
Since the 1940 s pistols have been banned in Canada, regardless of National Parks.Dr.Herreo is for Canada without saying that,Tom Smith accurate.
Your advice is accurate after minimal grizzly experience&significant black bear by bow&gun.
The ideal as emphasized, practice with both options where legal to be able to use either as almost asleep or just waking up.😢

Honestly if lived in a place that had Brown or Polar bears. I wouldn't go anywhere without a 500 Smith & Wesson magnum emergency survival revolver. No way I'm trusting my life on the reliance of bear spray.
