Just in case anyone is curious here's the link to the dress pattern I used: closetcorepatterns.com/collections/sewing-patterns-all/products/elodie-wrap-dress-pattern?variant=39419157512326 (10/10 great pattern, very comfortable and an easy make - I'm a huge fan of Closet Core Patterns in general)
I need to see it full length! You and I are built in a similar way, but I can't figure out how to make a wrap dress NOT make me look pregnant. 🤦🏻♀️V neck hell yah!! Wrap, no. :( I'll go check out the store, tho!
I knew that was the Elodie as soon as I saw it! I really want that pattern. Also, no I have a bunch of new UA-camrs to check out! 😊
I love how you just casually don't add Chrissy's suggestion into the list
Thank you for listing the info!
So pretty!
Bernadette Banner's book "Make, Sew, Mend" in the $20 range. Gobsmacked, that Bernadette did not share
She was clearly bewitching us to want it while we were drooling through Cheez-its ASMR.
I don’t think that she likes to self promote… I might be wrong, but 🤷♀️
I already have it and really love it. Just need to finish reading it.
@@margarethall1625 me too!
She is far too modest to mention her own book. Personally, I would love to receive it.
I'm so happy to see Bianca! The Closest Historian is one of my favorite channels of all time. She deserves more love from the costuming community 🖤💚
Same! Love Bianca! So happy to see her in a collab!
Me too!
YESSSS! I love her stuff so much
Yes, Yay for team Bianca! @TheClosetHistorian
Absolutely ♥
Bernadette being delightfully weird about cheezits was the holiday gift I never knew I needed 😂
Made me think of what i might really miss.
But: she can have my entire lifetime supply of crunchy cheese anythings. Nope. Not me.
What would i miss? In east Africa (2004, 3 countries), I missed having a furnace temperature control on the wall. We hit a cold snap for 5 weeks, in Ethiopia! Several years before, it had been over 100F at the same time of year.
I would miss my huge “closet” (2nd floor landing, 1916 house).
Black California olives. Pumpkin pie/bread. Rhubarb. Local Kohlrabi as big as a cabbage, and super sweet. Super good Lebanese/mideastern restaurants (so abundant in Michigan). Perfect summers where windows can stay open 24/7 and we run A/C a few days every year or two. Open windows means hearing the tuned wind chimes. Heaven.
Mid Michigan also has a huge wool/fiber community, including a guild of those of us who have spinning wheels to make custom yarn. And knitting guilds. And independent yarn shops. And a small but mighty fabric store with amazing fabrics and a young creative community that welcomes this retirement-aged maker.
PS Abby, those have been in my Etsy basket for a year or more. Gonna go for it.
I rarely comment, but I just had to say, when Chrissy busted out the Kosher salt, I busted out laughing. Been around here long enough to get that little inside joke! 😉
It's the saltiest deep cut 🤣
Chrissy has very *SALTY* sense of humour. 🧂 🤣
@@AbbyCox Chrissy has very *SALTY* sense of humour. 🧂 🤣
🤣🤣🤣 me too!
Would have loved to have seen Abby’s face when she watched that clip
Seeing The Closet Historian made me actually gasp in delight! Her work is so incredible and evokes alllll the ✨vibes✨ Also our chaotic queen Rachel Maksy forever 🍄
Love that everyone else was into nerdy books and Morgan is all about hiding clutter. I think I'll do some of each...
"A Sword!" had me laughing out loud... until I realized how legitimately epic that actually would be 😃
For people who like to sew without shoes on... SOCKS! (Yes I know it's cheesy and cliched, but nice comfy warm socks or slipper-socks).
We always appreciate a good novelty sock in this house
Yasssss I tell folx to get me a sockdreams gift card
I didn't expect middle age would mean really valuing socks as a present. 🫤
I’m a sucker for a wool clog or a down slipper. And I love a extra thick wool sock.
I got myself some sasquatch socks! They were thick and had the squatch on it.
Finally!! The Closet Historian gets some due! Been watching Bianca for years 😊
Right?! I still get so surprised that Biancas channel isn't bigger, she's taught me so much!
I was just gonna comment this! 🎉🎉
My thoughts exactly!!
Right! I adore Bianca.
Exactly! I can honestly say no one has taught me as much regarding sewing as she has!
Thank you for so many brilliant suggestions! Also to Bernadette for sending my cat from deep nap time to "is that the treat bag I hear" hunt mode with her Cheez-Its ASMR. 🙈😅
Hand-embroidered bookmarks! They're cute and lovely to look at. Won't break the bank when you buy half a yard of muslin and focus on the colors of embroidery thread you want for your design. It's a bit time-consuming, but if you focus on simple techniques, it still looks terrific! Even if there are friends who don't read, it still looks good to hang it up.
Yes!! Also works for yarn crafts- I found a cute crochet pattern for leaf bookmarks, and I gave them out as part of a gift with a book this past Xmas. Went down a treat :D
Gift idea - Seam rippers. You can never have too many …‘ cause they’re never in the spot where you are. You can find beautiful ones on Etsy
Especially the ones made from old silver plated flatware. 😊
Also tape measures. I don't know where they all go, but they disappear every time
The sword recommendation brings me straight to the time leading up to mine and husbands wedding. We were designing the ceremony (humanist-pagan one) and I said we can draw circle with an athame or a sword
husband-to-be: we can have a SWORD?
So yeah, we have a wedding sword. It's amazing. And it feels so good.
We also have a wedding sword! It’s currently hanging over our mantle
Everything is better with a sword…except maybe Twister
See, this is why I never married. No sword ! I need a man with a sword, clearly ! Or, perhaps I just buy my own sword and men find me "magnetic" ?!
One of my friends transferred me money this year (I'm disabled and therefore don't have a lot of craft supply funds) and honestly it was the best. I got to choose some really high quality knitting needles that were exactly what I needed but couldn't have afforded on my own. I'm always going to think of her generosity when I use them so I'm calling that a top gift!
That friend is gold. ❤ ❤ ❤
Isn't it the absolute best to get high quality knitting needles!
Seeing Bianca in this got me probably just as excited as when Angela Clayton started showing up in costube community videos!!! The costuming extended universe keeps on giving!
And where was Angela today?
Multicoloured tailors chalks would make a cute stocking filler.
That was fun and informative. While I enjoyed seeing both new and familiar faces with really good ideas, Bernadette Banner made me laugh. We yearn for what we cannot easily acquire. I recently went to a comic con, I screamed (no one hears you scream in the merch section of a comic con) when I located a source for rare and new-to-me Japanese snacks. The shop owner kept trying to total my order. I kept saying just one more thing. Anyway Bernadette, I understand the NEED for international snacks.
International snacks are very important. I was just in Japan and bought so many Japanese kitkats. I also have sent my lovely wife chocolate from a boutique chocolate store near me many a time. And for Australian expats overseas vegemite and timtams are always appreciated. I even got my Finnish colleague pearl sugar (raisokeri) when I went to Finland for last Christmas - it's ubiquitous in Finland but very hard to get in Australia.
@@infamoussphere7228 hell yeah, fellow KitKat lover 💜🖤
I swear to God, my suitcase grew in weight every day of my Japan trip and ended up being like 2/3 of my weight, most of it in sweets, especially so so soooo many different KitKats, from every city and region I've visited.
I felt that way when i lived in Denmark, and now that I'm back on the States I'm craving my Danish favorite foods.
🖤Bianca, my poisonous beetle queen 🖤
Bianca!!!! 🥰🥰🥰 And a cameo by the blue patterning table of doom! AND Micarah! AND Cheney! Awwwwwwe my favs 🥰 And Max @ Tasting History is GREAT!
Me: *nodding, such great ideas*. Chrissy: THE SALT. I did in fact crack up out loud. This is also a great introduction to a lot of new channels! (A sword is definitely the BEST gift. Check out Albion swords. Highly historical weapons)
Here, here, Albion does lovely work. And I busted a gut with the salt gift. As a chef in real life, Kosher salt is LIFE!!
I can also recommend Raven Forge for folks in need of swords, from the personal bias of already owning one of their swords
I'm really impressed with how many people were fit into this video.
It was a well-tailored video
"Nothing says friendship like a sword!" LOL! I love it! Actually everyone's ideas are really good for a lot of people I know.
Okay, I came for gift ideas and a cute collab and I'm walking out following my new queen Astraea. Crowns and swords! This woman speaks my language.
The way I screamed over seeing Emilee from OurShieldMaiden. I'm so glad she's getting community recognition because she is so kind and talented and so deserving of everything good
Aww, poor Bernadette!! Girl!! Make friends with some US Military folks stationed at Mildenhall or Lakenheath! :D The military commisaries are stocked with US goodies. (And apparently the heavier aluminum foil than they sell in Europe? My friends stationed in Germany were asked by a few locals for the good stuff. 😆)
Deodorant that actually works is also a great idea for Americans out of the US
Chrissy will never stop being salty about Abby's salt collection.
Also, swords are indeed amazing gifts. I've never gotten one from a friend, but I have gotten two from my awesome brother over the years.
My husband gave me Sting and Anduril a couple years ago and that was one of the best presents I've ever received.
@@NatalieCrafts I can't agree more. I got a real Chinese Tai Chi practice sword from my boyfried and now I don't need to use the old ones from my Tai Chi school anymore.
A Viking axe would be amazing too
Why has Bernadette become such a meme. I love it xD
Bernadette's makeup is so good! Also bias tape kit is a brilliant suggestion I've never thought of!
yeah that's the one that's floored me! I've steamed my fingers so many times making bias tape, I'd really like the kit!
You can get them cheap on ebay. I love mine.
My mother has a bias tape machine. I keep stealing it because I love it so much.
O.M.G. !! Sewstine with some great sensible recommendations.
Then Bernadette comes along like a hungry chanteusse lusting for "Cheez-its" ?! Literally laughed out loud.
Back to the video (THANKS ABBY!)
@OurShieldMaiden suggesting something that I was hoping was on sale at my local fiber store !
@RachelMaksy in her OLD HOME, I think ?! Bizarre !
SO MANY GREAT IDEAS ! Even a few folks I haven't heard of !
Loved the "Laced Angel's" 'Kosher salt!' Made me laugh as I remember those crazy kitchen concoctions that you, her & Nicole did !
I was thinking I didn't really have time to watch this right now but then I noticed The Closet Historian in the icon and couldnt not click! Thank you so much for including Bianca! Her channel really doesnt get the exposure it deserves.
I hope she picks up more subscribers who may have just learned about her from this video.
@@octavia088 be nice to see her get 100k for Christmas 🎄 ☺
Love Morgan Donner's fake books. I love books and sewing. I actually had a pattern for fake books at one time. I love this video
A light robe for the sewing room for those days when you are fitting and changing things over and over so it is a quick on and off. Also a cotton spool rack
[sees Bianca] "It's gonna be beads" (I was almost right)
I love the Crowns and Swords... We should all be wearing one while we stitch away at our Vintage Sewing Machines...😁👸
/SCREECHES AT BIANCA
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
i love how chrissy is still pulling the salt thing even after a year later
gotta love having a _salty_ friend😂😂
OMG how tf is Bernadette always so relatable 🤣
Also super awesome to see Bianca from The Closet Historian. Her tutorials are flipping amazing!
The sword recomandation,… I felt that one. It stabbed right through my heart and made me cry a little. Never have truer words been spoken. I must get one for my childhood friend.
I just bought one for my husband last week. 😂
@@pissyblue730 I hope it‘s a sword and not a sword like object/walhanger!
Even LARP Sword, especialy from wyvern, are kinda amazing and that tiny bit cheaper xd
I have always bought my own swords, but anyone is welcome to buy me one. My daughter (15) would really like one also. My son (17) already got one, because he wanted Sting, which is short and therefore cheaper. Now I want more swords.
when i got b's as an undergrad engineering major in a grad-level modern physics class, i was ecstatic. i was so proud of myself that i bought myself a costume sword as a reward. i still have it, and i still love it.
Okay so my gift recommendations for sewists would be:
- a quilters' multi-mat, it has a pressing board and a cutting board and is portable, so it's great for working on projects away from home!
- a wool pressing mat (either smaller and easy to take out of the house with you, or bigger if it's going to just stay at home). they're so good for really getting seams pressed flat, which is great for dealing with bulky seams 🤩
- a mini steam iron with a hard case + a silicone mat to protect the surface you're resting the iron on (prym have these, but you can get the exact same iron for cheaper from other brands). I love mine so much, it's super portable, and great for fiddly/delicate work, or when you don't want to fire up a full size iron for a small amount of pressing 😊. I also find it _much_ easier to use than a full size iron since it's a lot lighter, which is important since I have chronic pain and issues with my dominant hand's thumb and using big irons can really hurt after a while - the palm grip also helps keep my hand in a more neutral position and doesn't stress my problem tendon anywhere near as much as a full size iron 🥰. It's also so damn cute because it's smol, just a lil baby iron that's capable of so much 😭😍
This reminds me I need to put a tailors ham on my wishlist, lol
I can vouch for the mini iron bought it for doll dress making but I tend to use it for all ironing items now..
Yes on the wool mat as well ( but got to hide it from my cats as they love to sharpen their claws on it or curl up on it.. 😂
As for the cutting mat, I have several but right at this moment I can’t find one so this & the wooden press seam is a need for me & the smaller tailor hams for sleeves etc are on my wish list..
For my friends I made a patchwork needle booklet for all they sewing needles & made sections so they can be put into the correct place ..
Yes!!!! Bianca The Closet Historian!!! Love her so much!!!! She is amazing!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Did I just purchase three tiaras because of this video?…yes yes I did and maybe a niece or sister will be lucky enough to get one as a gift 😂
I've got one for any knitters out there - a yarn swift and ball winder if they haven't got one already. These are GAME CHANGERS. I seriously don't know how I managed without one (by taking a week to unravel a tangled skein, that's how.) For sewing I'd recommend a grading ruler, or for those who use zips, A BUNDLE OF ZIPS! You could even tie them up like a little bouquet!
I’m living for Bernadette’s villain arc, which isn’t evil so much as being so very cheeky.
I don't know why, but this just made me so happy! Seeing a lot of my favorite creators recommend things, that are mostly sustainable and/or supporting small businesses. And the fact that everyone shows up for this video. I don't know, I just have the biggest smile on my face right now. Thank you to all you wonderful seamstresses and makers!
Christy with the kosher salt is such a call back perfection
So so sooo HAPPY to see Bianca from The Closet Historian !!!! This was a fun video with GREAT ideas- book with the fabric swatches is now on my list, thank you Abby🎉
I will never forget watching Bernadette fondle Cheese-Its. 😱
Such a pleasure to be included! Happy shopping everyone!
Sometimes I think Abby is the Love Boat's Julie, Your Costube director...
“Books need their own section.” YASSSSSSSSSSSS QUEEN 🔥
Some handy dandy tools that you don't realize you need until you have them and realize how easy they make your life (or wish you had so you don't have to use random objects as pressing blocks): Seam gage, bodkin, awl, T-square or right angle ruler, tailor clapper or similar wooden seam presser, darning mushroom, a tiny iron and irining pad so they don't have to pull out the big guns to press small seams, bead organizers that are curved at the bottom of each section (no more banging cuticles on the dividers trying to scrape beads out), soft tape measures (in case theirs is stretched out), organizing things in general, and bobbins for their sewing machine.
Ima stop myself there b/c at this rate I might make a tiktok...
We're missing Angela Clayton 😢 but otherwise what a great collection, pattern paper is a great suggestion!
We're missing a few others too ... Jimmy the Welsh Viking, Snappy Dragon, Hazariel ...

A small channel, personal favorite I would love to see grow: Lady Rebecca Fashions.
A Pocket Full of Poseys and Asta Darling are a couple of others whom I would be interested in hearing from.
Also love that sewrena recommended Stephanie Canada's shop
Click when you see Bianca!! #TCHStan
This made me so happy! I think she is seriously underated!
YES!! I literally watched this because I saw her face on the thumbnail!
Im so glad to get gift recommendations from Micarah! She’s awesome!
Yay! Bianca, The Closet Historian, is finally getting some love! Her channel is amazing!!!
The way Bernadette feels about Cheez-Its is how I feel about M&S black olive crackers. Every time I go to London I have to bring back half a suitcase of crackers and then ration them out.
Does Bernadette Banner have the largest and most beautiful eyes ever or what?!? It was lovely to see Chrissy's face again on your channel! Your videos with Chrissy and Nicole were always a HOOT!
We need more Chrissy!!!!
2:00 I've actually bought thimbles from that exact Etsy shop! I can confirm that they're really nice. I really don't like wearing thimbles most of the time, but I don't mind wearing these bc they're sturdy without being bulky or awkward.
i stan bianca
Was binging Lady BB while I make an 18th century Pocket. Then I saw Abby! Coming to my rescue while I sew from 10pm till Midnight. 😌 🥳
:The Salt hit the desk and I Perished laughing:
indeed! we are all Deceased.
Chrissy…the great salt debate continues!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
lol she gave me a box of salt as a gift and I'm about 2/3s through it...and I totally took a baggie of it to my step sisters house for thanksgiving so...she won. damnit all. she won.
Abby's just saying that so I don't send her more.
@@thelacedangel Did you send her any this year?? 😂😂❤
Dear Zack, several years ago my daughter went to Japan and brought me back a pair of antique Japanese stork scissors in a little leather shield. I adore them, so sharp and so beautifu xxx
The Sewing Cinematic Universe 👀
Thank you Abby for this amazing video! And to my dear friend @sewrena for mentioning my shop!
True story- I bought from you on Etsy long before I found your channel! I loved your Walk Away dress series and found many new wonderful creators from it!
I laughed so hard when Chrissy pulled out the kosher salt!
This is an amazing list. I see a few things I can add to my wishlist for this year.
I love seeing Bianca/The Closet Historian (Pattern Paper: that if the larger roll with shipping is out of the budget, check your local nonchain fabric stores they may have smaller roles.)
I'm also appreciative that so many artists are represented. Some I knew and some new to me.
Thank you all.
Mood fabrics has the pattern paper in smaller rolls and if your total order is > 100 you can get free shipping. Bianca's supplier shipping cost is as much as the paper.
You can't go wrong with cheezitz
Just here for the guests. Tickled to see some I didn't expect and pleased to find creators I haven't discovered yet
Omg thank you for the shoutout!
A sword for Christmas? Oh YEAAAAH!!! ♥️🗡⚔️
Is it just me or is Bernadette giving off massive Camina Drummer vibes in that make-up?
My recommendations as a plus size sewist/cosplayer/history nerd:
Practical:
* frixion erasable pens - the ink disappears with heat, so it's great for a sewist who may not do every step right away (looking at you, air disappearing ink) or futzes with their fabric a lot (goodbye crisp chalk lines) Just check for colorfastedness on any fabric you use it on.
Books:
"Mend! A Refashioning Manual and Manifesto" by Kate Sekules - an excellent, practical entry into visible mending and sustainable fashion with tutorials on just about every mending technique you can think of
"Make. Sew and Mend" by Bernadette Banner - one of the absolute best manuals on hand sewing I've ever seen
"Ahead of the Curve" by Jenny Rushmore - a great book on how to draft and modify patterns for plus size bodies. Even comes with 5 full size patterns in US sizes 12-32.
"Cosplay Foundations" by Casey Welsch - step-by-step instructions on a variety of cosplay undergarments including hoop skirts, bodysuits, and corsets as well as a crash course on common cosplay fabrics and materials
I have found the air disappearing ink will reappear if ironed. I only use it for embroidery and even then I just use pencils now.
This is like watching Avengers Endgame for costumers
Great colab!!
Yay everybody! But I was very excited to see Bianca, and find a few new folks to subscribe to 🙂
The best present ever: a bunch of new sewing creators to watch!! Thank you for your community!!
As an American who lived in the UK for a year, I'm with Bernadette. Cheez-Its were the one thing I asked my mom to send me for Christmas despite not having really eaten them before. There just really isn't an equivalent British snack.
Kinda dumb idea: volleyball knee pads for when you're a floor troll cutting fabric or patterns on the floor
I need some!
You know you got a good group of people when crowns are brought up TWICE.
The diamond crystal kosher salt 😂😂😂 I would gladly take that as a gift.
18th Century Dressmaking is the book that got me STARTED. I find it so inspiring to flip through.
I love how eclectic this list is.
So happy to see so many creators and also such a great gift guide! As a sewest myself, I might add a scissors sharpener. A nice pair of scissors is wonderful, but all scissors eventually dull. Complete the set by adding a scissors sharpener in their stocking. Also adding all the books to my wishlist!
I can totally see my husband wanting the entire catalog of Dandy Wellington jazz. His Christmas is set, but his birthday isn't, and it is only a few days after Christmas. Time to start his new collection.
Also, love, love, LOVE Cartwright sequins.
And Bernadette, I totally feel you on the Cheez-its! It's one of the best snacks out there!
There are so many great ideas on this list! Also, now I have a craving for Cheez-Its because of Bernadette.
Abby, I love this video. Thank you so much for always being a thread holding the vintage youtube community together ❤️
This video has also just introduced me to sooooo many new creators that I know I will love. So thank you, thank you, THANK YOU 🙏🏽❤️❤️❤️
Bernadette with the snacks recommendation - absolutely agree. Snacks are vital, especially for those of us who forget to eat. I also love my bias tape maker (I got lucky and bought the Simplicity machine one, before it was discontinued), so recommend those! Planners are absolutely necessary as someone who does cosplay and regular sewing. The shoes recommended by Not Your Momma's History look so comfortable omg.
I am also very obsessed with the wallpaper in Sew Rina's background. Edit: and of course the next video recommended to me was this weeks Tasting History. I love seeing overlap between channels I follow!
Bernadette's made me laugh so hard. It's amazing what you cling to when you live far from home
The salt! 🤣🤣🤣 Best throw back. 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you, Abby, for a fabulous half-hour feast of ideas! Though neither a Cosplayer nor a Sewist, I do get a great deal of joy and pleasure from following a goodly number of the people in this. Additionally, I now have some other intriguing channels to explore and probably sub to.....
Lastly, my heart is beating hard at the prospect of the fake books for storage!!!! LOVE it! Thank you again for the time you put into assembling this, as well as everyone else for getting on board - a TERRIFIC idea‼️‼️
Right? Also not a cosplayer or sewist, but Bernadette has led me to so many hours of enjoyment.
@@mlbumller Yes, indeedy!🤓
I know I’m very late on this, but I want to say thank you to Abby for showing those rulers! Sometimes when you first see a tool you just know it’ll change your life and for some reason for me it’s always rulers. The first time I saw those clear grid quilting rulers my entire WORLD changed, and now these.
In case anyone is coming back to look at the comments, I wanted to suggest wax tailor’s chalk (only white, the colors are no good). It’s used all the time in alterations but I never see anyone use it in making stuff from scratch. It vanishes from most fabrics with the heat of the iron, and unlike the heat erasable pens, once it’s gone it’s really gone (technically it’s absorbed and dispersed into the fibers), not just invisible, so it can’t come back. Still test it because it can leave grease stains on some fabrics, but when it works it really works. Does not make your fingers or workspace dusty either. The colored wax chalk is permanent though, so I like the Clover blue water erasable markers for white/light fabrics.
SCISSOR SHARPENER! Seriously. Life changing, and nobody ever thinks to buy one for themself
This gift is two-fold; first a list of great gifts, but also a list of new people to follow! Yay!!
12:09 OMG my favourite Micarah is in your video!
OMG! Adored Cheyney McKnight’s revival of that beautiful headscarf from classic portrait of J. Toussant (sp?). It is now Living History! So perfectly emblematic of all that this community loves best!
What. No links for kosher salt? 🤣 Thank you for putting this together.
Kosher salt, lol! I’m Jewish, too. This is where I sit back and make cocktails when my non Jewish friends seem fried!
I'm not a sewer, but I am a knitter and a home cook. I can't tell you how important binders are for my organizing. I print out my recipes and patterns, slip them in a page protector, and add them to my binder. The page protector keeps me from getting sauce on my recipes, and it protects my handwritten adjustments. Pretty binders and a stock of page protectors would be a must have!
THANK YOU FOR BRINGING US ALL TOGETHER FOR THIS! It's so great to see what everyone chose for their gift suggestions!
