      At that time new creative director Maxime Beland thought that Splinter Cell needed to be some fancy Bourne Conspiracy copycat. Because of that the tonality of the series went from rather unique «men at work behind the global curtains» to «let's save the world and kick some ass». Thank God they've he's being outed as sex predator and fired from Ubisoft, he nearly became one of the most powerful people in Ubisoft's creative team.

      @@damienscott6561 , did he actually mention Bourne, or is that simply how you see it? I guess it’s the obvious comparison, but that’s exactly how I saw Conviction and Blacklist. If they were Jason Bourne games, they would have been great. As Splinter Cell games, they were disappointing. The next-gen version of DA was also a letdown and something other than SC.

All great games I spent countless hours on, but Splinter Cell struck me as my favorite of the bunch, to this day I still play it like once every 1-2 years and it definitely is the reason why I love Stealth games to death. Just replayed the trilogy a few months back. My opinion of the first Splinter Cell actually went up all these years later. It was a really fun adventure.
    I always held it and Pandora in the same regard, but now I enjoy it way more. It has a touch of quality that wouldn't return to the series until Chaos Theory, and some of the levels are my favorites in the series (most notably Defense Ministry, Presidential Palace, and especially CIA HQ). It absolutely has some stupid parts (the large room with the flags in Chinese Embacy 2 can go to hell) and the lack of quick saves is almost torture at times, but for a first entry in a series, its a damn fine game imo.
    When it first came out I thought it was the coolest, most advanced game in the world, lol. Really captured the interest of a young me. I'm glad to say it still holds up all these years later.
    I'm excited to see what your thoughts on the rest of the series are. Its a bumpy ride, but its worth it. Cheers!

    I clearly remember this game introduced me to real time shadows which blew my mind! the memories is still very fresh when I saw the sun peering through the window blinds and casting shadows on Sam as i went past them. this is also the game that introduced me to the bloom effect and when I first played it in 2006 i thought i was the coolest gamer in town. 🤣

    On December 15, 2021, Ubisoft announced that a remake of the game is under development at Ubisoft Toronto using Snowdrop, the game engine behind Tom Clancy's The Division and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.[105]
    Most of the staff involved in the original game are involved in doing the remake.[106]

    Absolutely check out Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory. PT is more of the same thing you got with SC1, akin to a full length expansion pack. CT, however, is a massive step up and alleviates a lot of the frustrations that the first two games are loaded with. Either way I'm glad you were able to get through the trial and error nature of the first game to enjoy it, I think that's the biggest hurdle to overcome when playing it in the modern day.

    The PC version allow you to adjust your speed subtly with the mouse wheel making it imo easier to gauge how fast your able to get away with moving on certain surfaces.

    • @Jay_Sullivan
      @Jay_Sullivan 2 роки тому

      When crouched, the lowest setting is safe. The second lowest is mostly safe. The third lowest can be mostly safe as long as you don’t use “move left” or “move right” and “move forward” at the same time. By “mostly,” I mean you should be stealthy as long as you’re not very close or on a loud surface.

    The stickycameras are an interesting one, they may seem useless but if you get into the rhythm of using them for headshots they knock people out and they bounce off of their heads so they can be picked up, they're great for no-kill runs and that's what I did:D

    Great review Spencer. You really went into a lot of detail and highlighted the good and the bad. To answer your question about movement speed on PC, it is controlled by the mouse wheel. It makes the movement feel a bit less authentic compared to the stick method. If you liked playing this game then you are in for one hell of a time playing the rest of the series, as it only gets better. Play the first 4 main games and you will have fun. Also, try and play Double Agent on non HD console as the HD version sucks ass.

    I have fond memories of the first Splinter Cell - even though it was kind of frustrating at points, the interesting traversal of maps was cool, and the lighting system seemed totally cutting edge at the time. Having said that, Chaos Theory blew it out of the water. It refined everything set out by the first game and Pandora Tomorrow, and changed the way you approach levels. It was a bit more forgiving, as you weren't quite so fragile, but it felt like you failed a mission even if you managed to complete it in a sloppy way. Pandora Tomorrow was cool, and some set pieces were great, but I think that the main selling point of that game was multiplayer, which I think may be dead in the water now.

    I'm not a huge fan of the first 2 games for being so linear and trial and error heavy, but I love Chaos Theory. Double Agent and Conviction are also decent and Blacklist is probably the 2nd best after CT. It'd be fun to see reviews for the whole franchise.

    I loved this game as a kid, but I also never beat it because the last mission is insanely hard from what I remember. You’re getting shot at by like every guard from every direction and they have NVGs on too, so hiding in the dark doesn’t even work. That said, I miss true stealth games like these.

    i would definitely check out the first ghost recon and Rainbow Six Raven Shield. if you have the option to play those on PC do it (especially raven shield so you don't miss out on the planning phase which is the best part of the game) and Chaos Theory is easily the best stealth game ive played from a mechanical standpoint, even though i prefer metal gear solid for its world story and characters I feel like chaos theory nails the actual being a spy thing better.
