      I can see if your filming handheld that it gives you more of a real feel to the video. But I create golf content so I have to set up a tripod to film myself, but If I had a videographer I would be ok if it was handheld footage

      Handheld. I just started filming last year (so not totally pro), but it just has a raw feeling to it. Gimbal is okay for certain shots but I think every clip thats super smooth is meh. I'm moving into more doc style weddings this summer when I can so a bit of shake is fine

    I am considering having my hands removed and just replaced with gimbals. Then I’ll just use my handheld plugin to give it the handheld feel. Best of both worlds.

    I do a lot of weddings and I've definitely gone more in the direction of handheld. It just tells a more grounded and authentic story in my opinion. I'll still use a gimbal for some broll shots of decorations and such, but primarily all handheld with the couple. Also, have gone away from shooting everything in 60fps. A lot more 24fps. Pretty scary, but I like the look. Cheers!

      Its refreshing to hear this and to not see a wedding videographer profile pic holding their prized gimbal ha! This summer I'm pushing into 24/48 fps and attempting more doc style shooting. The last 2 weddings I went to I left the gimbal. I shoot with 6k pro so it all gets scary but I love the camera

    It all depends on what you’re filming to use a gimbal or handheld. Overall gimbal’s make the footage look so much better than handheld

    When I started out I couldn’t afford a gimbal and when I was able to borrow one I didn’t like having to set it up and so I just taught myself to do everything hand held. Now if I was working on a big production shoot, yeah I would probably use a gimbal in certain shots. But I’ve always liked being able to recreate gimbal moves hand held!

      I bet it took a lot of effort for you to master how to do handheld and still maintain smooth or somewhat smooth shots. Nowadays gen Z is just being lazy and they’ll repeating crappy photos and videos they call it a “trend”. Um, no, that’s not a trend that’s just laziness. If you want to shoot handheld then put more effort into it but they are here releasing the videos that 2 year olds can shoot easily that gives you headache for days after watching it.

    Steadycam / glidecam, gives a great result that feels more natural than the sterile roboticness of a gimbal. But they're large and heavy so rarely used outside of sets. And a humble well framed tripod shot can really stand out against all the moving shots we're bombarded with.

    I shoot both but it depends on the project. I’ll shoot B-Roll for clients using Gimbal especially at 24FPS. Sometimes I’ll ad. 60 fps handheld but the clips are shorter and usually closeups. It really depends on what I need as to how I shoot it. They both have specific applications where one is better than the other.

    Super interesting topic, thank you for making and bringing it up. I wish I was good at handheld, but my footage is way too shaky. I got the Oslo pocket 3, which I used in my last video to travel in Norway, and the footage was so smooth and was impressed with the dynamic range. It packs a lot in such a tiny camera. My mirrorless shots, mostly shaky and wobbly. I wish I could get better shooting hand held.

    I think gimbal, tripod and monopod all are appropriate tools for different things. I've been using the gimbal onto the monopod so i can quickly take it off for gimbal shots but then use it on the monopod for more stability. It can quickly disengage from the gimbal then for handheld if needed. You just don't want to be far away from that contraption when it's combined! 🤣

    Me i just bought a gimbal..very good. And if you want you can add shake in post, for film effects. Also a gimbal is not like if you had a tripod. There is still a bit of panning because it is more heavy and you cannot be completely static, which i like because it makes it more dynamic. I prefer my gimbal. Handheld does not work with me.

  • @MJK420

    I think you used an example that highly favours handheld.
    If you'd have used a super wide shot of you going to the beach though a opening in the woods, I bet most pople would have preferred a gimbal shot, or actually no camera movement at all.
    In the end, there is no right or wrong. There is just different use cases.

  • @wangmedia
    @wangmedia 3 місяці тому

    Gimbal, monopod, tripod and handheld, they all have their use cases, the problem is that it is hard to run around with all on a wedding day which makes it easier to just stick to one. The issue with gimbal is that it is not good for most of the other use cases. My new setup is using the Osmo Pocket 3 for those very specific shots where gimbal shines and use monopod or handheld for the rest. On a whole wedding day I use 3-5 shots with the gimbal, couple walking, entrance and exit from the ceremony and some establishing shots, that's it.

    The same creators/influences first promoted, and helped with sales of gimbals while it was a trend, now promote perhaps not to use gimbal. This is why YT became an uninspiring place, where only toys and hardware is being glorified and promoted by the brands (like Panasonic) to push the sales. No space for the creativity, real art and story to be told. Every video is sponsored by Artlist or Square Space. I think it ultimately is coming to an end where people will move away from content creators realm in pursuit of something different.

  • @benjamin.kelley
    @benjamin.kelley 3 місяці тому

    It all depends on what you're shooting and how you want to tell the story. In my opinion, too many people gravitate toward a gimbal because they don't know anything else, which causes their story to fall flat, and their shots are all the same. If you don't have a properly built out handheld rig, you might suffer from way too much shake, which could also destroy your story. Something like real estate walkthroughs wouldn't fare well with handheld footage, and something like a running documentary wouldn't look great if all the shots were on a gimbal.

    Handheld seems to be preferred but I love the smoothness of gimbals. I think shooting smooth will always be the peak but handheld makes it easy. I think handheld feels more like a home video, the way my eyes perceive things as smooth so I like it replicated. Also, with the gimbal options available, you can have it as big or as small as need be. I would argue handheld is lazier as well

    Shooting handheld is a technique that still needs technique. Shooting 60p handheld looks like trash if you’re not slowing it down. It lacks motion blur and appears jittery. Too many filmmakers think they can go handheld because they are terrified of setting up a gimbal only to find out there’s still a certain way to achieve the results they’re looking for.

    FYI using a top handle grip like the one in your thumbnail with a small mirrorless camera is TERRIBLE. It's too light. You end up getting more micro jitters and it's really hard to keep the camera level. And it's tough to watch the back of the screen to frame things correctly. It's a waste of money unless you make your camera a lot heavier on purpose. Trust me, I tried.
    I honestly hate gimbals. Heavy. You have to balance constantly. Needs a lot of practice and skill to get good at it. They do work, but it's a pain.
    My best recommendation: Get a dedicated camera with awesome IBIS like the S5II, the the G9II, new GH7 or the Nikon Z6III, or honestly if it's for social media content, the DJI Pocket 3 is awesome with the built-in gimbal. Those IBIS systems, especially in boost modes, are 90% similar to gimbals. The last 10% can be handled with Resolve's excellent built-in stabilization feature. The GH7 also has 60 and 120 fps with no crop. Sony IBIS isn't as good as those cameras.

    Um look, Gen Z making “trends” or they think they are making trends doesn’t mean it’s a good trend. We’ve been there and done that already. If you want crappy video with shaky footage and gives you a headache for days after watching it, if that’s your thing go for it. But give me smooth, cinematic shots wit gimbal, it will NEVER go out of style. Gen Z is making “blurry” cheap as* photos “trendy” doesn’t mean blurry photos are “cool” either. They are just broke and or lazy or both and thinning by making these “trends” they can claim it’s their “style” so it’s all “good”. Umm, nope, go out learn how to take clear crisp photos where horizon is not distorted, learn smooth video taking skills, yes it takes time and effort and just because someone is talentless or lazy doesn’t mean we have to accept their lazy standards. 🤷🏻‍♀️
