Some bands / artists I've been following for a long time are (among others) Massive Attack, Pink Floyd, Pet Shop Boys, Archive, A-Ha, Yes, Porcupine Tree, John Mellencamp, Jean-Michel Jarre, Metallica, Peter Gabriel and Perturbator. So my music will kind of sound like those (without ever reaching the greatness of those artists, of course). :-)
JX-08 is one of the most under rated in the series. All that polyphony and the sound is really good as well. Patch spillover is so neat. Thanks for the video as well! My favorite "hidden" setting is the condition settings which makes the oscillators detune a bit and sound more drifty.
Thanks for watching! You're right, that's a great one.
I agree, this is a very nice addition for "desktop setups" which can be filmed from above. It looks interesting and sounds reasonably good. You can do all the basic synth stuff and then some more, plus adding one of our preciousssss pedals takes it to another dimension anyway. ;-)
I really like layering the two synth engines, it's like a 4 oscillator synth then, with a polyphony of 16 voices, which still is a lot compared to other devices of that size and price range.
Aye that underrated it made its way onto 'Bad Gear' Sorry Floyd 😔
How do you access that setting!?
PIcking up a used JX-08 today, wanted to get to know the sequencer beforehand to get up running fast, this video was great.
Thanks for watching - glad it was helpful!
Floyd coming up with very informative and fun to watch videos, as usual! Thanks for these videos, this channel is truly a gem. #SynthsForEver
Thank you very much! :)
I knew what I purchased, and i knew about many features packed into it. You did great job focusing attention on deeper settings. With this synth i had less practice, so I often dig the manual or video guides. I overlooked arp settings just because i often use this synth without keyboard. It’s awesome to have 2 synths in one
Thanks for watching! You're right, having 2 synths and a comparably generous polyphony is superb.
I read manuals for synths I don't even own to learn or evalulate them for purchase.
Ah yes, right! Sometimes I do that to see if I don't lose features when changing an old synth for a new synth.
Good to know I'm not alone! 😅
And there is me who only read the midi channel page just to be able the senquence my new synth with my setup
This is the way.
Lol, it ensures the device "does what I think it does" before I order it. 🤣
Yay! The Yellow Submarine is back! I read the manual of any new device I get, forget most of it, then end up diving in when I need something.
Same for me. I found reading the index is a good way to find things I didn't expect. All in all, a synth should be self-explanatory enough to quickly use 80% to 90% of it's features.
Thanks for that. Really useful 👍
Glad it was helpful!
great video very helpful thanks!!
Thanks for watching! :)
This was so helpful!
Thanks!
Thank you! I am a putter around until I hit a wall and then I read the manual, sometimes take notes and/or find youtube videos to learn tricks. this one was perfectly laid out. wheeeee
Thanks for watching! :)
Thanks for the video very helpful
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing there was little real good information on the synths just demos. i just got mine and i must say the audio qualty is great! and i love those dual seqeuncers. this is my first roland botiqeu but i might get a nother one too!
Thanks for watching! The JD-08 is pretty good as well. The older models don't have that much polyphony but may be more faithful to the source material. :)
awesome - thanks for this tutorial! ❤
Glad it was helpful!
Programmed first (bi-timbral!) sequence recently - with aid of Manual. Then found I could also send the *Step Sequence* MIDI Data from a DAW (Yay)! Was thinking of experimenting with "polymeters"... Your section on setting / varying the sequence lengths (real time) to "odd" values could prove fun / useful! :D
Good idea! I'll give that a try ;)
Fantastic video floyd any chance of some more on the jx 08 thank you 🙏
Thanks for watching! My next video will have the JX08
Nice one!
I still need to spend some time with the sequencing functionality in terms of modifying saved sequences (especially chord progressions, nice to make use of the bi-timbrality to play lead lines over some chord progressions). Not sure if it's actually possible or just hidden somewhere.
The MC-101 is terrible for having features that are simply absent from the manual (though it has had quite a few firmware updates since its release so it's not entirely surprising).
Do love the JX-08, while PG-8X does sound better, it's a great little bit of kit for noodling around with for some sound design.
Thanks! It's your last point for me. It's a nice piece of kit to carry around. It covers all the "standard synth sounds" and a bit more (if you're using the effects creatively).
@@mr_floydst Yep, it's got an awesome set of effects. It comes with me on summer and winter holidays due to its excellent portability. Just recently found that it has a version of the Roland Dimension chorus which is wonderful to have.
Just wish they decided to sneak a PWM oscillator in there. I can understand why it's not on the front panel but it would've made a nice inclusion. You can mostly get there using a square wave sync'd with the other oscillators pitch modulated by the LFO, but it'd be nice not to tie up 2 oscillators for it.
For sure not a perfect synth, but I'm still incredibly happy with it
nice.thank you
Thanks for watching!
That was useful. But I hate this sort of menu diving on what should really be a knob-per-parameter synth.
Hi, thanks for watching! The synth is knob-per-parameter in all the important parts that are related to sound editing. I guess they had to draw a line somewhere in order to keep the price relatively low.
Great video. I need to spend a bit more time with the sequencers on these modules. I figure learning one should similar between each unit. These things really are a gem given their price. Use a bigger midi controller for performance. The little keyboard is probably good for creating sequences when you are traveling around.
Thanks for watching! The sequencer is quite capable! The only thing I wish they'd thought of is _not_ initialising the synth engine when switching to another pattern that uses the same patches. As it is, all sounds and effects are cut abruptly before the new pattern starts playing, which kind of ruins performing more complex songs with this sequencer.
@mr_floydst You have an interesting channel. I've bought four of these boutique synths with plans to still acquire one of the drum machines and maybe the JP-08. Thanks for delving into probably the biggest subject one should read the manual over.
I have an issue with mine i cant figure out. I have it connected to Ableton via MIDI (out of my audio interface, into the MIDI IN of the JX08)... and sometimes when i press a button my launchpad to trigger a MIDI clip, the JX08 will play a sustained note/chord. -- it's really annoying cause it seems random
Hi Matt, perhaps you're "overwhelming" the synth with MIDI and sound data (if you're using MIDI and sound over usb synchronously, that is). You could try adjusting the buffer size in the driver settings. Also check for MIDI loops - a MIDI monitor might be helpful, as hanging notes may be caused by missing note off commands.
But these are only bad guesses. I had some hanging notes as well, but not more often than on my other synths.
... thx for this vid.... I already own two Boutiques.... (Se-02, JD-08) and I know how important rtfm is for these.... Ill get my jx08 in the next days.... 🤗
Thanks for watching! I wonder why Roland decided to use those 7 segment displays. Small LC displays are really cheap and would go a long way in explaining the machine.
...mini Oleds aren't good either...I own Hydras, Modals and a Microfreak and feel semisatisfied...so I learned to accept the challenge ....😂
...well, and my most poison Cryptonite is my Kronos ..I use an Galaxy S-Pen to program it because most of the time my fingers are too dry for the touch Screen ...
🫡🙏🏿 great asset 🇨🇦🔥
Thanks! :)
The manual is really bad. But the display is really bad, too, so at least the manual is useful for telling you what the settings are.
The Mod Delay (dLY3) is awesome. It gets really trippy when you set two delays of different lengths with negative feedback.
And nobody talks about unison mode.
Even if you read the manual, the EXT CLK IN isn't really documented. It needs a 4 PPQ trigger, and it only works if you plug a mono patch cable into it. The cable is detected by grounding to the ring like on Boss pedals - if it's a mono patch cable it's actually grounding to the sleeve, and it can detect a cable is inserted. If it's a stereo cable it just doesn't work.
It's got such a good sequencer. And it's basically got two of them, so it's really good for controlling other synths. And it can record motion, so you can control other things if you're lucky and the CCs line up. For example, I can turn off the VCA on Part B and set Part B to send MIDI notes on channel 4, then I can set my Streichfett and my Eventide H9 to both be on channel 4. Then I can sequence the notes of the Streichfett and use motion to record FX parameters for the H9. And the H9 can pass thru the CCs to other things, so I can leave the input/output unplugged on the H9 and just use it as a MIDI translator to map the motion to the controls of my Polymoon. Or whatever.
The FX are so good that it's frustrating. You need to menu dive to adjust the settings, and there are a LOT of settings. And Reverb Send is the ONLY effect control you can access via MIDI CC.
Every other Roland synth lets you control the FX. The SP-404MK2 lets you assign all five FX busses and control all the parameters of each one. The TR-6S lets you adjust the master FX, delay/reverb parameters, and the effect on each instrument. The most frustrating thing about the Boutiques and the Aira Compact series is that they're not part of Roland's main product and they just don't get supported with good apps and firmware updates.
Thank you very much for sharing your insights! I agree to everything you say, and especially on your thoughts on the sequencer. I did a video on that (but on the JD-08, which is roughly the same sequencer) a while ago and a lot of people were like "eeeh, too much button presses", totally ignoring that the sequencer is well above and beyond comparable step sequencers in similar-priced devices.
@@mr_floydst LOL... Well... I don't have much experience with poly sequencers, but every one I've tried to research looked like a nightmare to use in step mode - if it even had a poly step mode. Look at every Boutique older than the JX-08/JD-08. Do any of them even have a poly sequencer? I know the JU-06a is a mono sequencer that can't chain patterns and is limited to 16 steps. I assume people aren't even used to seeing poly sequencers and they get confused and compare them to monophonic ones. There's nothing simpler than holding down a step button on the JX-08 and playing a chord on a keyboard. I've never gotten frustrated with it. When I record something in realtime it's easy to erase the steps in step mode. I'm used to making patterns in step mode on mono synths then playing with the cutoff/effects while I play the pattern, and the JX-08 feels as simple as that, except it's poly and I can easily program a pattern in step mode then record the motion in realtime. I don't have to use the menus for anything. I don't need to even look at the screen except to see see which page I'm on. And whoever decided to add the Page/Tie button is a genius.
Thanks for your video. I am wondering if there is a TAP tempo button on the JX08?
Thanks for watching! Not that I know of, and it isn't mentioned in the manual either.
The JX-08 is missing a complete beginners guide video.
I love when I get new gear and there’s a video that goes over the whole unit
Thanks for watching! I hope this video was somewhat helpful despite that. :)
@@mr_floydst my bad should have also said that this video is was great too. Thanks for sharing.
I didn't know about holding a note and using the tie button.
Thanks for commenting! Good to know the video was useful in some way. :)
Great video, I refer to this to remind me of the features. What patch is C.38? It sounds great
I made that myself. Some pulse waves, basically.
Thanks for this video.
Is there also an LFO bpm sync?
No - only for the effects and "super filters".
thanks for the video. is there a way to control the filter of the synth with the keyb mod wheel ?
Not that I know of. You can assign filter cutoff frequency to aftertouch, though, and reduce the amount of LFO strength caused by the mod wheel.
@@mr_floydst thanks for the reply. if the cutoff is assigned to the aftertouch, can i set ranges?
@hugocaldeiravinagre yes, you can, in a range of 64 steps.
Took me a year to understand the korg trinity. Without reading the manual.
No more rtfm since i moved on to build my synths myself... 😂
In the end it is like programming languages. Once you learned the Main Concepts like oop, structured, line-oriented, (...), it is just a repitition when you arrive at the 20th language you learn...
Ok, the Korg Trinity is one of those workstations that does it all. No wonder you spent a long time learning it ;)
I agree to you, but sometimes the devs include an interesting detail or idea somewhere under the surface. You stumble upon it randomly years later (or you read the manual) ;)
@@mr_floydst good point. Another example would be the cryptic abreviations on the Display of the Yamaha an-200. I always had the feeling to only scratch the surface of its capabilities. As it seems, i was right.
I think we get into the realm of bad UIs when you have to search for 2/3 of the functionality as if it was some crazy easter egg....
Yamaha seems to do this quite often, to shrink size and/or price of their bigger synths. The an200 has the Sound engine of the an1x, just smaller, cheaper, ...and a bad UI.
Economically this makes lots of sense, of course.
But beeing the artist that has to use it, other things start to take on weight.
just got a jx08 a few days ago, something that is confusing me is - some preset patches have a flashing light indicator on the effects section. i cant figure out why the light is flashing rather than solid, and i cant figure out how to select the flashing light setting rather than the solid light setting when designing a patch from scratch. confusing! cool synth though. thanks for the video.
Hi, thanks for watching - I can't look it up at the moment, but the only blinking I remember is indicating SOLO/UNISON mode.
Another one!
Yep. :-)
Is it possible to run the sequencer with the arpeggiator? Thanks!
I'm afraid I can't answer this because my JX08 isn't here at the moment. Perhaps one of my viewers can answer this, please? ;-)
Thanks! If you ever get a chance to check I would be eternally grateful!
Thank you for the third tip. For the life of me I couldn't find in the manual how to access the "Type parameters". I don't think its actually in the manual?
Thanks for watching! I think it is in the manual (hence the screenshot), but the online manual is needlessly complicated with its nested, slide-down table of contents.
hi, allow one question: how do you make it happen to play arp with ext. Keyboard? When i play a chord on my jx-08 with ext. keyboard connected to the jy-08 midi channel the Arp does nothing, it just play the chord in poly but no arp. (arp switch lit up)
Could it be your keyboard is sending on the other channel while the arpeggiator is turned on for one channel only? (see my explanation in the video how to turn it on for both channels)
Other than that, I'm using the 5pin MIDI in.
@@mr_floydst OK, thats great, it works with channel 1. Thanks one step further. great. But then i have to choose manually the sound by hand on the jx-08. My ext. keyboard is sending midi notes out of an octatrack, so how can i tell the OT which sound A or B is meant? I will go back and check your explanation.
You need to send a program change command with your external keyboard / sequencer to choose the sound you want.
Keep in mind the JX-08 counts in blocks of 8 (11-18, 21-28 and so on), so 21 in fact is program number 9 on your external MIDI controller.
Finally, those math lessons have a real world application ;-)
@@mr_floydst Thanks a lot!!! The OT can send prog changes, but some kind of restrictions with look to patterns.
@@mr_floydst Ok i checked a few time but find not the explanations about the channels, just the split example with souns c27, c38. By the way my JX-08 has totally different factory sound on C38. Which is your sound c38?
What midi controller do you use?
Donner N-25
🙏❤
what are manual?
It's a slightly old-fashioned term for the keyboard and buttons and knobs found on church organs (for example) ;-)
Thank you. I just picked up the JX-08 two days ago, and fiddled with it for only a half hour. But, yeah-i'm not the type of person to read manuals unless i'm looking for something specific. But, this is especially true with Roland products. Hate their manuals and architecture. It's absolutely ridiculous that they're still using 1970 display technology. Particularly when they keep telling us that their 'ethos' or reason for not reissuing actual analog versions of their classic synths-is that they want to look forward to the future, not back into the past. Hypocritical and illogical....
Hi, thanks for watching! I thought the manual was ok. It's not entertaining and as brief as it gets, but everything was in there.
I totally agree on the display. What where they thinking? You can buy better displays for $2.50 for your DIY projects.
🎉cool synth and cool songs. What is interesting your frontal video mic is more noisy than yesterday evening setup. There is a strange effect like a delay and reverb combined.
Hm, I just don't hear it ;-)
It's the same mic as yesterday.
I mean yes I hear _some_ noise and _some_ echo from the room I'm recording in, but overall I think that's bearable for the short intro / outro. Anyone mind sharing his opinion or observation on this, dear viewers?
@@mr_floydst everything is totally fine. The noise is in his head.
I wrote a song about an octopus ! 😂
Link plxplx? ;-)
Digital Synth of the year.
Roland had some pretty strong showings last year and this year for sure. This synth, and also the Aira boxes. Pretty good stuff!
@@mr_floydst killer video. So happy your channel is putting out positive information 🙏🏾 . Roland is putting out some of the best gear in the world.
🫶🏽
A little bit overpriced for disposable and outdated plastic junk with tiny knobs.
Thanks for watching! Yeeeaah, ok, that description suits 75% of all synths/oh-so-hot tech products ever made sooner or later. ;-)
@@mr_floydst I still might buy it at the right price 🤣
