Making one now. Our well is 90ft. Gonna put a "swingset" A frame over wellhead with pulley. Hope your Dad is alive to receive gratitude. You are good sons 🚰👍
Thank you so much guys! I am a little lady of about 5' Went a bought a pre cut 3' section of pipe and got the reducer. Just have to pick up the remainder of the items needed. We can't afford one of those 1500.00 hand pumps............and I know the time is probably coming when unfortunately we are going to need this pump. Thanks so much for helping us. You have been such a blessing!
Great idea - just remember to check your well to make sure that you have room for your well bucket. Most people will have an electric well pump connected to a pitless about 10 ft down. For a home with a 6 inch well casing, you are unlikely to have room for a well bucket much bigger than 1.5 inches. You could make a long skinny well bucket and that would work. Excellent idea, well designed bucket, just need to make sure you can actually use it in emergency.
Yes your right. How do we get around the electric pump ? My well is 100 feet deep. They say our grid it to go down in the near future I've got to find a way to work around it to get water. Don't know how yet.
I have a deep well with submersible pump and pitless adapter. I think he mentioned in case of emergency, remove the things in the way. Cannot the pitless adapter be pulled out and then pipe and pump at the end? If my pump dies, the service person will have to pull it out to replace it. So it has to be removable right? I'm thinking after China takes out our grid soon after attacking Taiwan while Biden is still in office, I would just pull out everything and do exactly what the guy in the video did. Won't that work?
Yep, make sure the power breaker to the well pump is switched off before you pull out the submersible pump etc. You could have power going off and on . Put on a hose clamp or two on the pump pipe and tie a safety rope to it somehow in case you slip pulling up the pump. They're heavy, get some help.
God bless your father… I have an extra well 35 feet down I was looking for a cheap solution to get water out in case of a power loss… here it is … old time wisdom is always good!!!!’…. Thank you so much!!!!
True genius in its simplicity and efficiency. Just like the old days dropping a bucket down a well on a rope with a pulley only this time the bucket is a tube but its still hauled up on a rope! I couldn't have found you guys at a better moment in my life. I got a well drilled last year but ran out of money and couldn't buy a pump. Water level is only 15 feet with a six-inch casing. I haven't needed to use the well yet but that time is drawing very near and I was thinking about how much money it was going to cost me to move water fifteen feet from the ground to a bucket. Now I know exactly how much it's going to cost: $20! Thanks for sharing, you spared me from having to spend a lot of money at a time when money is real tight. You've done your good deed and I will share this video.
Buy a 100 watt solar panel from windynation, com fOR $100 (VIA HOMEDEPOT) and a 12 volt dc sump pump (ebay for $13 and the 1 1/4 inch clear tube $12 for 12 feet. Presto, Saves your back from lifting,
Screw a bolt in the bottom of the check ball and that baler would automatically dump when you set it in the bucket. You share that water with your neighbors wells please take the time to secure the well bore from contamination, doing so is in your best interest as well.
Thank you, I had an idea to use our old well to water the garden, and now I know how to use it....this is a great idea. UPDATE- Made mine up today, works great!! Thank you, now I have emergency water when I need it.
Dad is sharp! Thanks for the great and simple idea. Wells can be contaminated but you will die without water in an extreme situation. Just use your head and filter, pasteurize or sanitize before using.
I recommend a Berkey water filter. You can make one cheap using buckets if you cannot afford the entire Berkey set up and just buy the filters on Ebay.
Love it. Great simple way to not die in an emergency. Old school style!!! I think we are all thinking of how to build something a bit fancier and sometimes it doesn't work out or doesn't get built. We were overlooking the bucket method!!! ha ha great job gentlemen!!
What a super smart idea! No need for a pump. My well is under my house with very little room for a pump, but I think a small version of this could absolutely work. Thanks for the video
You're dads a handy guy! Thank you for the instructional video. I am looking for an emergency backup for my well which is in use so I need something that will not interfere with the existing mechanicals and pipes etc. assuming the emergency wouldn't last long so will need more of a small hose with a pump at the top to avoid messing with my working household well pump system. In a situation requiring a permanent hand powered solution, however, I think this is just as good as a hand pump and definitely faster and a lot easier to make and maintain. With no visible pump or spigot so no one would know the well was there once camouflaged in a SHTF scenario keeping any passersby or neighbors out of/from contaminating your well water supply. Love it! More! More! More! :))
I think I'd let them haul the buckets to ME = for each bucket they plan to take !!! We actually did that already ! It works as long as they do ! Very FAIR =D
Would be great if someone could figure out how to leave the electric well pump and add the ability to use a hand pump or well bucket (without pulling the electric pump). I can't think how that would work. But maybe someone else can.
Genius guys! Kudos to the old man! I love to work on projects with old men. They are so smart and efficient, probably because they have a given amount of energy to use...and they can't afford to waste it! :-)
Nice video y'all. Good job on the homemade well bucket. Great thing to have in case of emergency. Not understanding some of the shitty attitudes I'm seeing in some of the comments. Probably the same folks that will be expecting you to give them water in the event of an emergency.
Awesome! Just a tidbit for adjustments: biggest mistake people make with wells is contaminating the water supply- the PVC, rope, and your hands are all not clean and you're spreading germs into not just your water supply but also anyone else using the same underground water. You just need a way to keep the pipe and rope clean and not touching the ground. $20, wow!
These fellas are ingenious i have 300 cows drinking from one of my bores this would be the ideal way to water them if i could get one of these guys to pump it out for me by hand for around 10 cents per hour it would be extremely ecconomical.
We used to have a metal thing like that on the farm years ago it had some sort of flapper at the bottom of it it would open when you dropped it into the water and the weight of the water would hold it closed and you could pull something at the top to release it.
Brilliant! Way cheaper than a Lehman's Deep Well Galvanized bucket at $99 currently -- and they were back-ordered for a very long time during the lockdowns.
Just want to thank your dad …..x two lengths 9f pipe the idea and a ramp pump was able to water siphon and fishing line attached to ball no electricity required from my brothers well of grid ….in Portugal thanks 🙏
Thank you! That is a very interesting concept. I am looking for a manual way to extract well water and may utilize this idea. I like the idea in the comments section of the quick release string on the the ball too so you don't have to tip it to release the water. Good job!
Very good...Someone used to sell something similar to this - it was made of aluminum or maybe something galvanized. Just a long metal tube with a one way flapper on bottom and when pulled out of well opening, you pulled a lever which opened flapper valve and out comes the water. With water weighing roughly 8 lbs per gallon, I don't believe it held very much - maybe 5 gallons.
I have been trying for over a yr to get water from a deep well couldn't afford pump to be replaced and I fount this video I'm going to try it I'll let you know but thank you for sharing

In a survival situation this would mean you have to pull up 100 ft of well tubing and a heavy pump to dip your PCV bucket down the casing. Might be easier to just put in a hand pump well. Not many folks have a spare well not in use. Cool idea though.

Very respectable to share this. My thoughts would be it might be necessary to make a smaller diameter version that could fit down past the existing pump piping. Wont be as efficient but maybe less effort in a emergency, Thanks.
The issue there is that the power cable is usually taped or zip tied to the pipe and a plastic pipe might not be straight in the bore, so the bucket will get hung up going down or coming back up unless you use a very small pipe diameter. Once you get down to 1 inch pipe it holds less than 5 fl oz per foot.
What size rubber ball?I want to build one asap. Been racking my brain for a decent way to get water in an emergency. Our well is 70+ feet so a hand pump won't work but your idea will.

why not make a reducer to 1" at the top with a 90 and a hose and pump the apparatus up and down making the water travel up the tube/handle? mine uses a windmill piston in a pvc tube with pvc sucker rod/ handle. i plan to use a trundle board to use body weight to move the piston. pop eye thighs instead of arms.

they need to open this wells in Flint, Michigan
we had one when I was a kid about 50 years ago... nice...
yea they're called shotgun well bucket been around for many many years.
Is the water at the static level (top of the water) safe to drink? I’m asking because a well pump goes down a lot deeper. Thanks in advance!
Thank you for this!
Thank you for the idea
In a survival situation this would mean you have to pull up 100 ft of well tubing and a heavy pump to dip your PCV bucket down the casing. Might be easier to just put in a hand pump well. Not many folks have a spare well not in use. Cool idea though.
A hand pump works real hard and takes MANY pumps to get one 8 oz. glass of H2O............... not easy at all. Ours is at 45 feet !!!
