- One day John's research findings gave him a shock. Children could reliably pick winners of parliamentary runoff elections only using facial appearances! More studies from politics and business helped confirm that looks could determine a leader's success. Rather than switching careers to plastic surgery, John asked: how can leaders go beyond being "faced" to connect with their audience via words and actions? John found an answer: charisma. He will show what charisma is, how it can be measured, and why it matters, from the U.S. presidency to the most frugal communication medium ever used - Twitter.
As a child John Antonakis watched his parents successfully managing their businesses, winning community leadership elections, and South Africa transitioning from apartheid to democracy. All because of leadership. John became a professor at the University of Lausanne where he carries out research on, what else? Leadership.

This video is really cool. He speaks in a very colourful ways and shows you how to be more charismatic. It is actually easy to be charismatic if you follow the steps he has in the charisma triangle. This talk is also based on a lot of science and is not like many other blah blah talks that are based on opinion. A must see.
I had terrible accuracy with this test, but then I do have aspergers. I guess that could be considered supporting evidence.
This sounds really interesting. I try his techniques on stream playing some games or asking questions

This talk, along with the talk of Amy Cuddy are the two most important talks on TED about leadership. Cuddy focuses on nonverbal behavior and Antonakis on the rhetorics (how to speak) using a variety of techniques to project a vision and to be more charismatic. A must see for leaders (or if you want to become one).

I think he is charismatic. I expected to be bored (this was assigned for a class) but I was engaged almost immediately.
I think we are justified if we do . Charisma is highly sought after and we recognise it innately as social creatures . Does he have if ? Im going to go out on a limb and say he doesent ,at least not in any appreciable quantity . And I’m left wondering why he hasn’t been able to crack it ?
The most memorable thing about this is the guy at the end with the badass eyepatch.

I had been studying charisma and think am capable of giving a Ted-comment on the topic, so here it comes:-
Salience is Charisma. In Psychology, Attention is a function of Salience. People tend to treat people who are more salient as more causal. In Switzerland, confession cases are required to be recorded in an angle which focuses on both the convict and the interrogator in order to avoid a false confession. Why is that so? How does the angle of recording affect someone's judgement? It is because when we have only face to focus upon, we treat them as more causal. If you are any minority in a group, you will be treated more causal, based on the predicament.
Charismatic people are Tall, good speaker, good Listner, *good story tellers* , enthusiastic, charming (our attention) and know how to handle attention and pass it to the crowd in the back. That hits the brain with positive emotions.
These all are salient features. Now, don't be an attention seeker. Be worthy of people's attention, that is charming. Speak clearly and with confidence, people will pay attention to it. They will judge you positively (Admirably) and you will come off as charismatic. Also, you cannot act out charismatic. You can change to be charismatic.
Okay since you've been studying I have to ask: is there anyone teaching charisma in a course format I can purchase today that you would recommend?
It has to be Tall ? Short people cannot be charismatic?

just because someone studies basketball science, it doesn’t mean they can play basketball. he never said he was charismatic but he made studies and did his homework on it.
Thank you Darryl. It was so hard to give this talk because one worry I had is that people would judge me on whether I was charismatic. I do not think that I am very charismatic though I did try to showcase some of the techniques. Like a basketball coach who shows and describes a move but cannot execute perfectly it like a talented player can.

I had a general manager of a hotel who looked competent/someone you'd vote for and everyone who didn't work with him described him as a 'well respected businessman'. That staff knew he was a sham, and sure enough the executives drained the hotels assets with large salaries, lived off the hotel's former good reputation for a time, didn't reinvest in the hotel and eventually declared bankruptcy. We lost our jobs and a month later he was working for a big chain.

Well if you present ppl with no prior information about these ppl except how they look like then no matter the question,the selection would be solely on the basis of their facial features and they'll always choose the better looking ones. This would be different if they had more info on these ppl but it does prove that beautiful ppl are attractive.
Is this charisma? I wouldn't say so. This is a lesson on how to be _compelling._ Charisma is rather rare, charisma is when a person walks into a room without saying or doing anything at all and people turn their heads to see. Charisma is when you start talking and everyone around you listens in silence. Charisma is a combination or mannerisms, tone, facial expressions and emotion. It is also boosted by personal feats, a sense of style etc. One way to put it, is that when people get older and more experienced, they also gradually become more charismatic because life makes them less nervous and more wise. For example the world famous singer-bassist Lemmy Kilmister was very charismatic. How did people describe his charisma? They said that rooms fell silent when he walked in, everyone listened when he spoke, they said he was intelligent, civilised and loyal. Charisma, to put it bluntly, is being what other people want to be, to be admirable.

No he's not. But charisma in this case is more about portrayal than political attractiveness. And in this case, he does portray himself as an economist

You really have to practice aligning your thoughts with body language though. It was quite different when I first started doing it but when I applied to everyday situations people really started to take a liking to me.

Part of the reason why I want to be less charismatic is because of the fact that so many people put so much weight on it. They will expend their resources on appearance and acting all while they miss out on the real truth in the end.

A influential and charismatic person can make a difference to everyone they meet, be it you or a family member. That person can bring them out of a dark place

I try to tell people the truth and I want people to follow or trust me, but they always go to the flashier, more promising, more secure option. The option that is safer for them, not the one that could be better for the world in the long run.

Great stuff, for sure. But John Antonakis fails to share something essential: the techniques to build "charisma" must be learned in a particular sequence. The foundation - body language tools - must be built first. Without mastery of these tools ( that we all use but most people unconsciously and often awkwardly), everything that follows ( voice tools, facial expression, storytelling techniques) is not very solid. In fact, I personally found John Antonakis' presentation skills good (not excellent). He came accross as too cerebral, too academic and the emotion and authenticity weren't really there for me. IMHO he could work on body language techniques a bit more.

well he was not there really to show how to make it happen. this was a scientific finding wherein, he tried to show those findings by applying the results of the test. Hence, the reason he applied some of the skills of charisma. Make no mistake, however, this is not a TEDx Talk to teach us how to make charisma work. it only showed the scientific basis of how charisma was applied based on his team's findings.
Completely agree with you regarding his own skills. I couldn't have said it better.
When I hear a stories I think: "Hey this man is trying too hard, he wants something. Does he want to use me?" So I don't trust this kind of people. I interrupt them if I can and ask what does he want, after that... magic happens

I'm glad at least someone noticed that.
Also their pose was different. One was showing confident more relaxed posed while other was in tiresome pose like someone who lost.

I think there is a lot more to the Wisconsin senate seat poll... When asking the crowd that question, it would be interesting to see the results if he asked in different order. So the Democrat on the left first, then the right. And in the boat captain, the crowd tended to pick the better quality picture...
In the original experiment, position was randomized (about half subjects saw winner on right and the other half on left). We did likewise in our experiments.

It's hilarious that he is absolutely wrong. Charisma only takes you so far. After that you better be good at what you do be it in music, sports, writing, whatever.
All these years later people don't go back and listen to a band like Led Zeppelin because they had charisma. They go back to them because they were a great band that put out music people loved. If the music was bad no one would remember them.

I think charisma is confused with a simple speech technic. 2 different concepts.
You are right that speech techniques....or communication skills is something different from charisma per se. In fact, in one of our experiments we controlled for communication skills, including "speech structure (as communicated in the introduction); framework (beginning and end well-connected); logic of the speech; simple and easy-to-understand language; nonlexical utterances; clear pronunciation; correct English; nervousness; and tempo of speech". These factors did not predict leader prototypicality, affect for and trust in the leader, leader competence, and leader influence. See: Antonakis, J., Fenley, M., & Liechti, S. (2011). Can charisma can be taught? Tests of two interventions. Academy of Management Learning & Education, 10(3), 374-396.
Thank you for your answer, however the things you recommend to do to give charismatic speech are very similar to the suggestions from NLP, especially from the book - How to Get Your Point Across in 30 Seconds or Less.
My point is - making a joke before your speech will help you to deliver an idea and will make you look more confidant, but it's not charisma.
Then again, maybe it's just different perspectives or an understanding of the term.
Making a joke per se is not charisma, though humor can help one appear more charismatic.

Lesson: Presentation matters. You can have great ideas, but if you don't know how to tell people they don't mean anything. You can give all the economic understanding in the world, but if you can't make people listen things will never change. You can have horrible economic ideas, and people will adore you if you are charismatic. Learn to present, and your good ideas will have an even greater impact.

The trouble with politicians is they want to be in office, and it often ain't for your and my benefit. Perhaps the job should actually go to the one who wants it the least. And maybe no one should see this person, or hear them speak. Wouldn't that be an interesting change?
The camera work in this and other talks is terrible. They turn away from the slides causing you to miss important information. Such as the final point in the charisma triangle in this talk.

Charisma is innate, it's not 'taught' nor learned. Accepting yourself for who you are make you come off as authentic and not fake.

Hair matters. Having a good hairline and thick hair can get you the job over the dude who might be more qualified but who has thinning hair and is balding. Charisma plays a huge role of course, but looks play more of a role at least at first, and not everyone who is good looking has charisma.

Is this even about charisma? They’re choosing based on better looking faces..that’s pretty shallow as well..charisma is mainly about the personality mixed with intelligence and body language..this is actually pretty sad

oh no...he has given away all the tricks!... But I think he did not mention one important thing: Yes, you can script your speech and messages to include stories and metaphors to make it captivating, but you cannot act naturally if you do not mean what you say. Politicians and leaders are not trained actors (and they should not be), if they lie or act on stage- its visible and feels unnatural and fake. People who believe in what they say are passionate about it and audience can feel it. Charisma is something which is natural, you can make it better but you can't make it up from scratch.
