I hope this is helpful as it has worked every time for Me .... So if You wish to avoid those toxic chemicals in the bug repellents You can use a mixture of Tea Tree oil drops, Citronella drops and olive oil ( to apply to skin) or instead of the olive oil put the drops in water in spray bottle to spray on skin and clothes. Mosquitoes hate Rosemary & lavender also ( as a side note) ☺️🌱
@@JunkyardFox, hey there, I didn't hear you say first aid kit... Course, you're pretty savvy when it cones to the outdoors and I just found your channel tonight, however I'm sure minor injuries you can handle pretty well medium to major injuries I'm sure you could tied someone over til help arrives! You're pretty awesome! Are you from Texas? I'm from Abilene area!!! All these videos are making me miss home bad!!!
Awesome to see a DESERT bushcraft channel. Fire, water, beer. Fight off critters. Desert camping 101. Dig the jeans and boots too man. From on desert rat to another, cheers my friend!
Great video. To add my 2c on the phone; I use my phone as a library. It's filled with reference materials of all types, as well as apps for astronomy, navigation, etc. It's essential to have some way to determine if this or that plant is dangerous, medical info, etc. , even if you're a top-level mountainman bushwizard. Even EMTs and Search And Rescue people have reference materials on hand, because sometimes you just can't rely solely on your memory. It also helps you add to your knowledge right then and there, so you're less likely to forget look up that weird insect or mushroom days later when you return from the bush. Excellent addition to the list.
I am starting to follow your channel. We live in south texas, but we visit west texas about once a year. It is really splendid peaceful isolation to get away.
Absolutely love the fact that you use a "no name" tent from Target. You don't need to spend a lot or buy all these name brands to have a great time outside. Those Gazelle tents look great, but my Walmart Ozark Trail tents works fantastic and has held up for years.
I like how you break things down to simple and reasonable. You don't approach camping as a tactical annoyance. Just make it more enjoyable with a few extra items.
all good items on a top 10 list for sure....the cell phone is what I consider #1 your life line if something happens and as summer is almost here (east coast of Canada) I've had to break out the bug spray too........and even on a day or 1/2 day hike don't forget the toilet paper and a small first aid kit......thanks for sharing your list

I agree on the first aid kit, including a bandana. Something else that could be added are a few individually packaged moist towelettes. Sometimes those nature calls cannot always be fully attended to with just toilet paper. Moist towelettes can also be handy for a quick clean-up of hands to save water or in first aide situation. Whatever happened to that good ol EDC carabiner clip concept? There are several handy little items that can be easily accessible on one clipped either to your belt loop of pack. Nice video James!!
............James.!!! so glad to see you have returned to our homeland in the Desert Southwest... That is what makes your channel so special to me....You and Bob Hansler film and study the Southwest where we live..... UA-cam is full of folks who film in the frozen snow country of the North..........and I watch and enjoy most (MOST ) of them.....but cannot identify with because we are born and raised in the Great Southwest.......This is the country I need to focus my bushcraft skills on .......rattlesnakes....mesquite....cactus...and horizons that stretch farther than the eye can see...........Welcome home.....!!!..........Please stay here.......BTW....I like the looks of that new knife you just showed along with the Mora....more of it , please..........
Greg Knight awesome brother, I appreciate the kind words but I’ve been filming desert videos almost all year. Are my vids not showing up on your subscription feed?
It's very interesting seeing people in different environments you're not familiar with. Most of the environments I am familiar with have more of a focus on waterproofing items but the fundamentals are usually the same as your environment. I try to stay away from the phone as a navigation device but having access to many reference sources without the corresponding hassle and weight of books can add to your outdoor experience and get you out of difficulties (though I still prefer Collins Gem books for foraging). I think phones as a learning aid are fantastic.
2-ply toilet paper.. None of the John Wayne Toilet Paper. It's rough and it's tough, and it does not take sh*t off of anybody.. Great choices, James. Thank you for the video.
Mora knives are great. I have one that I made a handle for out of antler, blood wood (exotic wood that is naturally a crimson color) and a turquoise stone at the end of it. So I’m glad to see that there are a bit of people recommending a Mora. In an SHTF situation, or survival situation caused by what ever, would the vehicle also be used as a shelter?
I was feeling uncomfortable and a little stressed out and after watching this video along with a cup pf black tea I feel much much better now. Thanks guys!
Headlamp. The lantern is nice, but if I had to pick one OR the other, it would be a headlamp. Ideally one with variable output, including a very low setting, and a red light option. I also prefer to be able to replace the batteries, rather than worrying about runningg the light down and whether I can recharge it. Fellow Texan here, and I agree 100% on a tent or hammock to avoid creepy crawlies. I canoed the Devils River years ago. We flipped the canoe once and I lost my sunglasses and hat. A hat with a brim all the way around it would be #11. Sunglasses would be somewhere in my top 20. Suncreen as well. I imagine that all three of these items would be lower on other people's lists, depending on where they were. Up north I imagine an axe is worth its weight in gold. I almost never enter the woods without a pistol. But then I'm usually by myself.
Gotta admit, I didn't expect the beer haha! All of your choices make sense and are logical, no fancy stuff that costs a fortune that you only use once a year. Now I have to get my hands on a cooler.
Hi junkyard Fox. It's been a while since I was on your Channel. Last time I spoke to you you were talking about a knife and I was talking about a large Boomerang shaped knife called a kukri. Back then my littles symbol or insignia was an orange and blue tank. It's actually a German tiger tank painted in the colors of Nerf.
Nice outro! Great list James, cant imagine heading outdoors for a night or two without a couple of cold ones to accompany the sound of a crackling fire and crickets.
From AZ years 56: Number one item H2O. baby wipes, Knife, mirror, good pair of shoes. Tell someone where your going and for how long. Most importantly don't get lost or hurt. Parents taught us how to find/make shelter and live off the land.
The Kansbol is one of my favorites as well 👍👍. I also agree that an oversized Ferro is a great way to go with a lighter as a backup. Have fun & stay safe out there my friend.
Ran across this channel during my UA-cam rambling. I'm from South Alabama so I'm pretty sure I can survive out here fairly well if need be. But I've been curious lately about south Western USA. How the Apache, Comanche, and Mexicans survived and lived off that harsh land for centuries.
Nice list. Nice video. I'm looking at all those panoramic shots. Where did you get all that firewood? Bring it from home? Thanks for sharing. Keep up the great work.
Hi James. Thank you for a great video. I have watched a lot of your stuff and love everything I have seen. You seem to be, in my opinion, a true old fashion gentleman. Toilet paper! Ya damn city slicker sissy boy! Just use your left hand to scrap them brown nuggets of yer rear end like a real bushcrafter! Then smear it on your face like some tribal war paint to scare off them damn desert bandits. Hahaha! 😂 All joking aside, great video and great choices brother. Your video quality is top notch as well. I tip my hat to you good sir. I wasn't aware of that Hidden Woodsman French Trade bag. That looks like just the right size for some day hikes away from your base camp. Definitely going to check that one out. Thanks for making the video James. Sláinte!
Do you rely on Beer to keep you warm at night, or do you use a sleeping bag? I'm not used to camping in the desert, but I hear that it gets really cold at night ... Nice Vid.
Ive seen you test several knives, whats the one you favor or use? I have the old Marine helicopter survival knife( issued at the time of Nam) and a high carbon Mora--- i like them both
How can you call yourself a youtube survival expert if you aren't sleeping in a hammock? It looks like you may need miles of cordage to find two trees to hang it from. Thanks for showing us survival in the southwest.
My top 10 #1 my back pack #2 my knife and fire starter #3 my cook kit #4 water #5 bug repellent #6 compass #7 tarp #8 wetwipes #9 sunglasses #10 my phone

shovelhead8 What does the spaceship Enterprise and toilet paper have in common?
They both circle Uranus searching for Kligons 🤣🤣
last item made you a hero. Nobody is willing to admit they like to relax. Well done! Uh-Rah!

RizeVize :- I think that relieving stress is one of the main reasons for these types of videos. Learn, relax and relieve.

Awesome video. Simplicity always works and gotta love a good beer 🍺
I always loved investing in a good sleeping bag.
I totally agree!
Great choice in a Texas beer!
Awesome, and yes that’s pretty much what you need to camp down here, still prefer coors banquet. Rough Rider Canyon?

Looking forward to the haversack review.
Thanks James! Great video! Enjoyed your list and look forward to watching the tag videos
That's good to hear I really enjoy your videos
This is starting to be my outdoor channel. I live fulktime off grid in the southwest (4 corners) living in a van in the desert.
Great video. Thanks for keeping it real!
Nice list. Nice video. I'm looking at all those panoramic shots. Where did you get all that firewood? Bring it from home? Thanks for sharing. Keep up the great work.
actually lazy landscapers come and dump trees in the desert. we take advantage of taht and use them as fuel
Had a rough day. Coming home seeing you posted a vid, just made it better. Thank you for all of your hard work. We appreciate you.
Landon Wills that means the world to me, thank you so much for the kind words. Hope you’re getting outside soon!
They also make a repellent with lemongrass that is less harmful and pretty good.
Keep the vídeos flowing, i love your vids
really loved the video. item number 8 & 9 was awesome. most people will generally forget them.
Hi James. Thank you for a great video. I have watched a lot of your stuff and love everything I have seen. You seem to be, in my opinion, a true old fashion gentleman. In my opinion, this is a very good thing. Thank you for so many great video's, and I will continue to watch your channel as long as you keep posting. Kindest regards :)
Tony M I appreciate the kind words, my friend. Thanks for watching, I hope you’re getting out there this summer, enjoying the great outdoors.
Just found your channel through PM101, and wow, great videos, and love it. Serious, nice tempo and a good "radio"voice. Great work! :)
Good list James, glad to see some comfort items on there, alot won't admit that they actually use them (even though they do) lol
Dynasty Preppers amen I don't mind telling people about my comfort items like a bug net or I use a tiny dry bag for a pillow a good night's sleep means a lot to me and I'm not ashamed of it either lol.
Tree Rat69 Agreed, comfort isn’t talked about much but it’s important to remember. Makes even a hard situation better
Wish I could move to the southwest. Almost tempted to just quit my job, make the move and take a chance of finding a new job before my money ran out.
Loves the video man. The desert is BEAUTIFUL!
Excellent!
Thank you! Cheers!
Love the channel man! Coming up to Colorado anytime soon?
-50 degrees here in Chicago today 😂
Mora - nee - ven :- correct pronunciation ( no "K" sound)
I agree with your essentials list. Everything should be able to serve more than one purpose in order to be carried.
Edit:- After reading comments, I just remembered one thing I ALWAYS carry out in the bush...Baby wipes.
Hey brother we have just started getting into camping hiking over the last six months I came across your channel and have really enjoyed it. We do not have a lot of gear yet, picked up a little from garage sales and some stores I was wondering how important is a water filter? Is it better than boiling only? And what’s an affordable filter that covers all the bases? Maybe around $100.00 max.Hope you can help with this and thanks for the vids we are learning a lot of valuable information to improve our skills and our outdoor enjoyment.
Great Video Brother! I'm so glad to see a new one from you! Great vid. Great choice of items for your Kit! Love the Kansbol. Love the inclusion of the cell phone.. Here in the Northeast when I head to the hills I very rarely have a signal.. But its often an under recognized piece of kit. Thanks for sharing!
Regards,
BCB
BushCraftBums thanks for watching, brother! I appreciate the kind words! Cheers!
Sensacional esse deserto. Muito bons seus vídeos.
Nice collected list.....I like your approach to things. Well done. -Stephen, Ohio
Oh cool I’m from Ohio too!
Awesome, thanks for watching!
Some great items there, all very important when camping. We don't always need to "rough it" ! Best regards. Wade
Woodswalker 1965 as important as it is to test yourself and gain skills, equally important is to relax and unwind and enjoy yourself outdoors.

Good choices my friend!
Lonestar,,,, that's what we give the foreigners.. Ya need Shiner Bock. :) good video though
Can you do a video about your truck and what you keep in it?
Hello my friend. I enjoyed your fine video very much. It was very informative, well thought out. Take care out there and be safe.
Ronald Rose thank you very much, thanks for watching!
Takes a half hour for night vision to kick in. Not one for hanging out in the dark, prefer to rest
Rather Pepsi and a rollie than a beer, but cheers! 😂
Irish Zombie Nation too bad GG Allin wasn’t a bushcrafter lol

Well picked, James, and well said, too!

Will you ever review a lt wright outback in a saber grind I really like that knife and honestly think it’s one of Lt Wright’s best knives
Do you rely on Beer to keep you warm at night, or do you use a sleeping bag? I'm not used to camping in the desert, but I hear that it gets really cold at night ... Nice Vid.
Very nice thanks for sharing, fun fun fun!!!
Karma Clanton thanks for watching! Loved your recent pics on Facebook!
Great video! Salud!
Ive seen you test several knives, whats the one you favor or use? I have the old Marine helicopter survival knife( issued at the time of Nam) and a high carbon Mora--- i like them both
my all time favorite knife is the mora kansbol, its the most versatile blade ive ever worked with. my second favorite is the green river hunter knife.
2arrow knives are bad ass
Great gear choices 👍
great video,,,,,,
Is a hanver sack a man purse? It reminds me of a man purse
Thats your own ignorance. The baddest mofos in history carried a haversack or satchel: Vikings, apaches, western outlaws, soldiers in world wars, etc.
Cheers brother🍻

How can you call yourself a youtube survival expert if you aren't sleeping in a hammock? It looks like you may need miles of cordage to find two trees to hang it from. Thanks for showing us survival in the southwest.

Well done. I like your videos. They are well done and you do a great job explaining and describing your methods. Only one thing I've disagreed with you on so far. LOSE THE IPHONE 8! Take care!

You know there’s a burn ban in Hudspeth county ;) and that tent looks new, every time I use a new tent it looks beat up after its first use.
WesTex Homesteading & Outdoors I’m not in hudspeth. Check out our ‘spices during survival discussion’ video we made a few years back, it’s the same tent. Thanks for watching.
Junkyard Fox Culberson? El Paso? Those have burn bans as well. You probably washed it, already seen the video.
Legit i was getting worried this channel had died.
ivan hita we’ve slowed down due to lack of time, but we’ve made at least 6 videos this year. Do they not show up on your feed?
Instead of beer, I prefer marijuana, which requires no cooler or ice and weighs almost nothing. It’s legal here in Arizona.
