Many years ago I got to know the American tradition of Christmas Pickles and was pretty much surprised to hear that it's known as a German tradition. I had a look at Wikipedia and found out that it might have been a lost german tradition. There's a german catalogue with a Christmas Pickle. This catalogue is from 1909 - way before the internet and public flights.
One of my favorite traditions that I remember when I would celebrate Christmas with my dad’s side of the family is eating finger food, hot wings and playing a game with the presents and you could steal a present until all the presents were out from under the tree. The game was called the white elephant exchange.
Searching for the pickle in the Christmas tree might be an american thing, i never had heard or seen it before in germany. Could you write down the recipe from the cookies for me? I like baking to so i would really appreciate that! Anyways great Christmas Holidays y'all !
Caroline, although most Americans believe, the Christmas Pickle is a German tradition I can assure you it isn't. You won't find German Christmas trees decorated with a pickle.
You are most likely wrong. Have a look at my comment. And nowadays there are many pickles in German trees, because you can buy them at almost every Christmas market (and f.e. at Käthe Wohlfahrt's).
@@Andreas_Cologne Being commercialised doesn't make it a tradition...😉 Halloween and Valentine's Day are also commercialised in Germany for some years now, however this doesn't make them a German tradition. Both are pushed into our society by businesses and originate in the US or Ireland.
Hi Caro, seems you are not a morning person with whistling a song on your lips when you wake up 😀Btw, what do you mean with its's cold. Well, here the last days with -13degC at night, my car battery broke down, thats cold and you wish to stay in your bed under the warm blankets. Do you like baking cookies for christmas ? Well, ich wünsche dir und deiner Familie Frohe Weihnachten und einen Guten Rutsch ins Neue Jahr. Für 2023 Alles, Alles Gute und vor allem Gesundheit und Frieden. Tschüss.
White Elephant is my fav Christmas tradition and goldfish is top tier.
I totally agree!

Thank you for clarifying! My host family in Germany didn’t have a pickle but I wasn’t sure if others did
