Great article! I recently took my x5 diesel in for a recall srvc to my local bmw dealership and, to my pleasant surprise, handed the keys to 2020 x7 as a loaner. The expected turnaround of 3-4 days turned out to be nearly 2 weeks. Long enough for me to just about make my x5 a distant memory. What you lose in mpg's is more than made up for in comfort, style, and attitude. The cabin space is perfect. The rise is sedan like and exceptionally smooth. Think xcountry road trips forever. The car eats up miles with ease. And the comfort you'll have driving will cause you to question the uncontrollable smile you keep having on your face. Make no mistake that the x5 is a tremendous vehicle but that 7? 👌 I'm still not over turning it bck in😢
Couldn't agree more! The X5 is a tremendous vehicle and for many, it is the optimal choice. However, the X7 offers a level of luxury and refinement that the X5 doesn't, as you experienced.

Great comparison, thank you! Question - How forgiving or adjustable is the adaptive M suspension Professional of a X5 M60i vs. a x7 M60i air suspension with Executive Drive Pro? Is it a huge difference since both are adjustable? Thank you for your thoughts and inputs.
Dude, your videos are great! If I lived anywhere near your I would have bought the X5 I just ordered from your dealership. I own a Mercedes GL now and my kids are mostly grown, so the X5 makes sense. But if I still needed the 3rd row, I’d look elsewhere - I just could never warm up to the styling on the X7, and I still can’t.

Glad we picked up the X7. Love the X5 but needed the extra room. Also will my 2023 X7 get IDrive 8.5??
If you need the extra space, X7 is definitely the way to go. Current 2023 X7's have ID8, not 8.5.
Please do a comparison with the 2024 bmw x6 and x7 ride quality. Which has the softest floatiest ride quality I really want to know
For all intents and purposes, everything said in this video will also apply for X6 vs. X7 except cargo capacity. That is to say, the X7 rides much more comfortably than the X6. They both ride nicely, but the X7 is more of a luxury car.
From a styling perspective IMHO X5 much better looking car, also added width of the X5 makes it look more aggressive esp in the M Sport black out trim w/ 22 inch rims. Back of the X7 looks a little rushed/tacked on if you will. If u need the hauling capacity go with the X7 but other than that from a pure driving standpoint and trim esp. with the 2024 LCI not much difference between the X7 and X5 if fully optioned.
Totally agree! The X5 definitely has a more aggressive look, whereas the X7 seems to be designed more for having presence and conveying luxury.

Excellent video! Can you compare the 540i and x5 if possible? I know they are not same- sedan vs suv, but their engines are same and I have sat as passenger in a 540i and didn’t feel the lightweight or smoothness of the latest 330i. So curious if x5 would be similar to the 540i?
Thank you! I'll be honest, those aren't two models that I think are very frequently cross-shopped, so not sure if it warrants an entire video - but I'll give you my thoughts here. X5 definitely feels more isolated, smooth, and comfortable than the 540i. Not by a whole lot, but you'll notice the difference. They're both fantastic luxury cars, but the X5 rides a bit better, has smoother inputs, and of course, the added practicality of an SUV. It also feels a bit more substantial on the road, probably due to both it's added weight and ride height. It now also has much better tech than 540i: ID8 vs. ID7. All in all, the X5 is just a newer, more recently updated vehicle, so it just feels a bit better than the 540i in terms of comfort and refinement. However, if you want something that is a bit more manageable on the road due to less mass and size, and feels a bit tighter to drive, the 540i will be better for you than X5. 540i also has more comfortable seats, in my opinion. What about captains chairs? Are they adjustable? Do they fold down?
Captains chairs are adjustable, but do not fold flat like the bench seats do. They can fold forward to increase cargo space and allow access to the third row, but they do not fold flat.
Glad I bought an X7, love the extra room and styling.
The extra space is definitely its biggest advantage over the X5, it makes a big difference! And the styling is fantastic, the X7 has tons of presence.

What's the max tongue weight for the x7? Is the x5 still 550lbs?
I have a travel trailer that I would only tow 2-3 times a year. It has a avg tongue weight of 550-600lbs and total dry weight of 4500lbs. I don't want to get a truck or Tahoe only because I tow a couple times a year.
Good question. I cannot find an answer to this on either BMW's website or our PKoD system, so unfortunately, I cannot answer accurately with a number from BMW. You can use general rules of thumb to get a rough estimate, but as far as I can provide, BMW doesn't give an exact number for this. Apologies on that.

My 2c would be that it all comes down to whether you're actually going to use the third row in the X7. If you're not, get the X5. The X7 is in some ways surprisingly *less* practical than the X5: you can't get three child seats across the 2nd row bench in the X7 but you can in the X5 (I think the middle seat in the X7 is fractionally narrower - I couldn't get a high backed child seat in the middle whereas I can in my X5), and the height below the cargo cover in the trunk is slightly less in the X7 that it was in the X5, meaning our dog crate didn't fit under it in the X7. Moreover, the fit of the larger cargo cover to the 2nd row looks pretty bad in the X7, and there's the impracticality of the fact that the third row armrests are exposed and therefore quite easily marked by luggage. I was hoping to be able to use the X7 as an X5 with more cargo space, and would love to see an X7 *without* the third row, but other than the benefit of the extra second row legroom (which - to be fair - is significant) I'd argue that the only reason to go for the X7 would be if you (1) actually need the third row and (2) don't simultaneously need to carry any reasonable amount of luggage.

Here I’ll sum this up for you really quick! If you need the third row seat get the x7 if not get the x5 ! Comparison over! They are both BMW’s and everything is basically the same engine unless you get the M! Comparison is over!
There's definitely more to it than that, but that is one of the biggest considerations.

in asia it's only sold the diesel option, thus the fuel cost is even cheaper than a 4 cylinder Camry.
x7 seems to have more stance.
