Stephen really saw the true monster of Jim Jones very early on. He tried to commit suicide three times when he was twelve. I'm glad that he's made peace with the past
This interviewer is WAY too upbeat for this kind of panel. I know he's trying to be entertaining, but I mean damn... his manner of speaking just comes off as really dismissive to the weight of the topic. EDIT: it keeps getting worse...
Glad someone has pointed that out. It's not just me then? The guy needed to be reminded that this is not a fictional movie but true life documentary that traumatically has and probably still does affect them on a daily basis, he needs to show more empathy and be more delicate in his communication style.
Thank you for that apology to Guyana. For much of my life (born and raised in the US)- I had only ever heard of Guyana in the context of this massacre.
I do wonder if Jonestown could have been a success, if they could have had their dream society, if it was not for Jim Jones himself getting in the way. The people were not dumb.. they gave up a lot because they believed in this vision of a real Rainbow Nation, love and fairness. Makes me sick what was taken from the world... the vision, and the optimistic dreamers who really tried to pull this off and not just talk about it.
Cinnamon Girl Thank you!! People tend to think of the story of Peoples Temple as being just about a bunch of ignorant sheep led astray by an evil madman. There is so much more. It's both sad and dangerous to see it that way. There was alot of good that was done in the very early days in Indiana. The issues of where and how things went wrong are important to look into. Jim Jr needed to keep the mic away from his mouth when he wasn’t speaking. The sounds of him salivating were quite distracting, particularly during the crying woman’s question from the audience, and then again when the group was asked the final question. It was heard all through his speaking as well, he should have been more aware of it. Like a hungry person eating a bagel slathered with cream cheese when no one was around.
