  • All learners are diverse - and part of that diversity lies in their genes. How can we use this knowledge to give every child the best possible support?
This video illustrates how researchers are seeking to understand the connection between genes and education, and they have achieved significant advances in recent years. These scientific insights, like many others, can be distorted to support dangerous ideas. We must be aware of the dangers and guard against them - and focus on the positive opportunities that the science offers:
In the future, we will be able to identify children who are likely to have a harder time learning, and to provide them with tailored support early on. We must make every effort to ensure that new insights about genes and education are used to benefit all children - especially identifying those in need of support and boosting their learning before they fall behind.
Video created by the animation studio kurzgesagt (In a nutshell) for BOLD - Blog on Learning and Development. Script by Kathryn Paige Harden and Sabine Gysi. Powered by the Jacobs Foundation.

There are 4 professors (2 physics, 1 med, 1 psych) on my Mom's side of the family and a creator of a billion-dollar company on my father's side. Both my brother and I felt the effects of genes on our view of the world and behavior because of gene expression naturally changing as we age. I tested in the upper 90's percentile throughout my early childhood, often hitting 98 and 97% in all subjects. I was a smart kid by the standards that tested me. As soon as I came to be about 16 or 17, something changed very fast. I actually remember looking down at my vitamins and medicine I would take every morning and realizing I could no longer tell if every pill or capsule was there on the palm of my hand. I started doing worse in all subjects and my feeling of being I would say, "pulled into everything" // analyzing my surroundings was far less intense. I didn't know what was happening until years later my younger brother had the same thing happen to him. It turns out, a gene for hard focus, probably adapting for hunting was inherited from my father's side and gets expressed in late adolescence, but it focuses on certain things that would make me "turn away" from the kind of automatic analysis I would do before. It was like pushing a slider, towards one form of present thought and away from another, but I couldn't move it back. I find that if I close my eyes and focus "away from my body" - perhaps, it could be called meditation - I can still view the world as I used to, but only be pushing back the slider with great concentration.
Genes are real. We need to adapt this fact to our way of thinking and trust humanity to be good with the state of the world. Anything else is tyranny by dishonest moralists that think they can push their view and rules on an entire world of free socities, as if that has ever turned out well.

That is really an interesting story...
Now I'd like to write a book about a multitude of such stories.
      Very intriguing.

A just society is one that accepts reality and works within the framework of what's possible. Our society has been built on an impossible lie. And we see everyday the injustices it produces, the daily insults and the depravity.
The fact is, a "good" society is going to have a hierarchy. A bad society is goin to have a hierarchy. A hierarchy will exist as long as humanity does because humans are fundamentally unequal among one another. Only after we accepted that, can we ensure that the hierarchies that do exist are just, organic, and deserving.

    Does correlation equal causation?
How much do Genes have effect on learning?
There is sure a lot of answers to ask!

Awesome, this video is like Star Trek tinkering with the idea of genetic manipulation and discrimination decades ahead of its time but the main difference is that we gotta ask those questions now, I find the video and the tv show outstanding

As someone who is considered a genius in terms of IQ, is from a poor family and failed in my education; I find this video very insightful.
I am now raising 2 young daughters and try to lead my parenting with empathy.
I worry every day about them ending up in the same position as myself, despite their highly intelligent and creative minds.

You did not fail in education. You failed school. That's not even close to being the same thing.

I don't think this is a good idea. There are few arguments against intelligence, and few for stupidity. This research will highlight the fact that we are, essentially, not equal. Obscuring this fact is necessary for an inclusive society, in my opinion.
