In this episode of our boat restoration, we lose our outboard engine when maneuvering to change anchorage goes wrong. But we are eager to retrieve it, and as we are divers, we decided to go to the bottom of the sea after it. Will we find it? You have to watch to find out!

Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the work needed was much more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way.

@@karibakid The cost varies greatly, depending on the options, center console, hard bottom, etc., but they can get into the tens of thousands.
I don't know how it would all work but this sounds like a "Go Fund Me" situation. I know there are enough of us out here that would be willing to raise money for Ben and MP!!!
Put a safety chain on the outboard motor that is bolted to the boat. In this manner, even if the motor slips off its mounting, it will not be lost. Good luck!

Yes, I noticed the yard workers hammering with the side of the hammer, which is something I was always taught not to do.
This is when the ol' handy Magnet on a stick helps. Useful for finding dropped Ferrous tools in muddy shallows.
It's a bit of random kit that you'll never remember to take, but never regret not taking.
What? Erm, they weren’t in shallow water.
In sailing terms, If you can dive to the bottom you're in the shallows lol
Loosing equipment when already living on strings is hard especially as important as what you lost at sea, you showed us your best side despite the gravity of you loss, love you two, you are an inspiration ❤ 💖

Considering that the dingy is a meant to keep you safe if you need to vacate the boat, perhaps you should consider getting a new dingy. Also, make sure you have a space on the boat for the dingy. They're not meant to be drag behind the boat. 😊

Fun episode despite losing the engine
Glad you think so!! This was the typical "making a lemonade out of lemons" situation because losing the engine felt like a hard punch on our stomachs but we ended up enjoying the search and having fun when diving!

I am sooooo impressed with you 2. Not trowing anything in the water while reparing the dingy. I wish more people had that attitude. But please buy a new dingy it has died a long time ago and needs rest. Lots of love from Belgium

Maybe add a safety cable on your next motor. That would keep the motor close to the dinghy no matter what or why something happens ! The quicker you can retrieve a sunken motor the better to get running again or less damage it will have .

when you replace the D ring on the dinghy put a large plate on the inside to spread the load.

You have probably gotten lots of suggestions about losing your motor. But I’ll relay my experience. I was in a small hydroplane with an 18 hp motor on it and I hit an old submerged piling and it knocked the motor off the transom. Luckily I had a motor chain attached to it and although it got wet, it stayed with the boat. I paddled in, took the motor home and drained the water out of the carburetor and took the plugs out and gave it a bath in pre-mixed gas and oil on the inside. I drained it all out, put the plugs in and it started right up!

Oh well. Engines are easily replaced. It's all part of the adventures!!!
If you used bondo on the dingy, I hope you sealed it, because bondo will absorb water and eventually fall off.

I always use a lightweight chain, like a dog tether chain to attach the outboard motor to the boat.
You're so right! We had it locked with a padlock, but not with a chain or rope ☹️ Lesson learned now!
My grandfather, who was a very experienced fisherman, had the same mishap in the 80's. Plopp, and gone on 40m depth. Since that, the next motor was always secured to the boat by a proper rope.
Great episode and that fish looked absolutely wonderful. A couple of beers next to it and you’ll have food sponsors willing to pay for your new tender motor, or more than enough cash to mount a full scale retrieval. Don’t fish radar or depth sounders give you a vague profile of the bottom? Nice to see you two settling into life at sea.

Very cool to see your boat being a boat!
That's why I ALWAYS had a rope tieing the Outboard engine to the dinghy. This way, even if the OB Engine gets lose from the support, it can still be easily retrived, even if flooded.

Motors symbolize movement, chairs symbolize being stationary or sitting still if you will... I think the sea is sending you a message to "slow your roll," I recommend not going to sea until you've permanently repurposed that chair, I think making it to a captains chair is the perfect expression of respect to the sea, that although you steer the ship, the Sea is the foundation with which your home is founded and this chair is a constant reminder to the Captains, of that fact, to never forget to error on the side of safety! This was a really fun video. My Rescue class was in zero vis and trying to find an "incapacitated" diver was no fun at all so I feel your frustration searching for your motor. Wish you'd found it but the resulting video left me with a smile on my face.

Ben, is there a way for you to put a safety chain or strap that you can put on the motor tighteners to the dingy itself? Dont ask how I know, but it has saved me in the past :)

Golden rule:Always attach your boat dinghy engine to the transom with a chain.We learned this when i was doing my Rhodesian Boat Sqn training.We nearly lost our engine on our Zodiac on Lake Kariba.Sorry you guys lost your engine,pity you couldn't find it.
Here's an idea: Don't Put Holes in your Dingy!!!
However you do need a towing bridle for it, Suggestion: create one above the waterline, perhaps from the bow locker.
I was positively giddy watching MP preparing for the dive. Then I saw the head-cap: dear me! It's really fun seeing you 2 so happy and diving.
Especially seeing MP as the diving instructor. The chair? - Maybe they have an artifacts museum?

See oil right next to the boat. Row out and dive a half mile from the boat, waiting three days to dive on the marker bouy. These two kill me. 😂😂

THAT WAS A BLESSING! i mentioned u guys needed a 4 stroke motor for the dingy, in a previous episode! that 2 stroke motor was trash, it's scrap metal! 4 stroke is the only way to go

The surprise transition to go under the flipped dingy was cool. Didn’t see that coming.
My motor almost twisted off the boat when I applied power. Didn't lose the motor, but it taught me an important lesson. Always cable the motor to the boat. 🙂

This time we had to shake off some upsetting vibes, but we managed to have fun after all!
When I was a kid we were carving it up with a jon boat and a 9.5 HP Evinrude and the motor came loose and lifted off the transom as we took a turn. Luckily my brother was able to hold on to the tiller and we got it back aboard. We kept a safety line on it after that!
Losing an engine is pretty bad, but at least you gave it a good try to recover it. I lost one from a boat I made when I was 12. I had taken a cruise around Coronado Island from Imperial Beach in Southern California. As I was returning a large swell caught me and it took my engine with it, transom and all. Of course when I returned home and told my dad about it he gave me a hard time about losing it. He went out into our workshop and returned with a well made braided leash that to attach to the engine to prevent it from happening again. It was nice, but I didn’t have another engine nor did have a boat to hook it up to. That’s life.

Thank you so much for watching Barry! We highly recommend the capsicum with the egg made on the BBQ! You can add salt, pepper, or even cheese as a topping and it's very tasty! Just the capsicum alone on the BBQ is already worth it, or with some pesto on top... yum!

The engine was locked with a padlock and we thought that was enough 😢 Now we will always have a chain or a rope at least. Lesson learned indeed!

Diving wrecks; your compass will always point towards metal! Perhaps you can locate the motor this way. Otherwise, search patterns.
Great safety warning. I see too many sailors using gear they aren't certified on.

Bravo for trying so hard to find your outboard! You put a lot of effort into that search, but don't discount that! Perhaps one of your patrons can help replace it?
New dingy built to be towed and hoisted would be great when you can do it. And a setup to hoist and mount the outboard!
You guys are great. Just like learning to scuba dive you need extensive courses, same for sailing and living aboard. I’d there a sailing school like the British Yachtmaster course available near you? And sailing and racing on other peoples boats is also helpful. All the best. Big fan! Tom

You can use your boom to haul up your dinghy on top of the deck. Make a dinghy davit for on deck so you can tie it down.

I learned three days into my first cruise, never leave the dinghy in the water at night.
My new dinghy and new motor were stolen and never recovered.
Other friends had their dinghy break loose at night and never recovered.
Salt and Tar had their dinghy and motor stolen too.
The simple answer is to make a rope bridal to be able to hook the dinghy in three places and lift out of the water with a halyard. Leave it over the side at deck level, ready to lower at a moment notice but safe and secure.

Oh my God now the Outboard has disappeared! I'm getting tears of laughter all over my keyboard.
They really do just sort of draw flies, don’t they! 😂
This is an old guy talking so feel free to disregard but ... in the old days, (in Sea Scouts here in the US) we used to attach a cable, chain, or rope lanyard from the motor to the transom. We always had an eye bolt through the transom and the lanyard had a snap. Some people would use a padlock. It was specifically if the motor came off the transom (either lowering it onto the transom or losing the whole motor while it was operating.
I also noticed that Mads of Sail Life doesn't have anything to keep the motor from coming loose or being stolen off the small boat. Just a thought.
