On behalf of every Canadian who watches your channel... all we have to say is "FINALLY, YOU FOUND THIS!", on all your videos about Gander all Canadians are screaming in the comments to watch Come From Away. It's a brilliant musical that tells the story of not only the Town of Gander, but alot of the "Plane People" who inhabited Gander. And yes, it has played in the US on Broadway, as well as a touring company across the US.
He’s dancing with an ugly stick, often seen at what we Newfies call a kitchen party. You should go see it if you ever get the chance. I think you would enjoy it.

Come from Away is an incredible piece of theatre. Highly recommended. Even the Apple TV filming of the show is great! I've seen it live a few times. 9/11 was a difficult time in our history. This musical honours that with the same respect the people of Gander offered those stranded travellers. We humans can be so good to each other when we choose to. Wishing everyone well!
Hi! I’m from Newfoundland, the broom you were talking about, is what we call an “ugly stick” and it’s usually a mop with bottle caps, small bells and such nailed to it to use as an instrument!
Yep pretty much sums it up, my grandparents have them in their cabins haha. Newfoundland tradition at it's best, and playing the spoons while your at it.

Gander Airport was one of the busiest airports in the world in the 1950s because most transatlantic flights had to stop there to refuel. Eventually, planes got much bigger and capable of holding enough fuel to fly non-stop and Gander became less busy. But Gander's Airport has always been important.
Come from Away is one of the best musicals I have ever seen. It is funny, poignant, and uplifting. If you ever get to see it I guarantee you will be on your feet at the end! In the meantime, listen to the cast recording. You will get a really get a good sense of it because it includes a lot of dialogue, as well as music.
Come From Away is one of the best musicals I've ever seen ( I'm a retired high school music teacher). I've seen it twice in Ottawa - I would absolutely see this musical every week if I could. When it opened, you couldn't get tickets ( and that was in New York too). The way the stories are weaved throughout the show is flawless. There's no intermission which allows the momentum to build. My daughter, who is a professional singer/actress, auditioned for Come From Away a couple of summers ago - it was in Gander so they were casting locals only. My dream, before I leave this earth, is to see my daughter perform in this incredible musical ( and that's not hyperbole!😉 )🙏

You should really listen to this entire musical soundtrack. It's genuinely fantastic. The songs "Welcome to the Rock", "Prayer" and In the Bar/Heave Away are very good. Just as a Canadian and even though it's been 20ish years since that horrible day, I think this musical displays the very best of people Canada and certainly the very best of people in Newfoundland which is remarkable as the very last province to join Canada as a province. March 31st 1949 is the day Newfoundland became a Canadian province. Not that long ago at all in the grand scheme of things, y'know?
Broadway The musical opened on Broadway at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on March 12, 2017 and closed on October 2, 2022. The musical was a critical and box office success, and Christopher Ashley won a Tony for best direction.
You are one of the few Americans I know who doesn't know about Come From Away. Heck, I get thanked by Americans for that whole scenario... and I live in Ottawa, not Gander. This show was huge on Broadway and also traveled internationally, receiving rave reviews, Tomy awards, and people love it. If you can see it on Apple TV, have at it and enjoy. Come from Away is a term... like a local term or slang... it refers to all the people who came from a place far away and suddenly stayed and were cared for by the fabulous Gander residents and others from around that area. You don't forget that kind of hospitality. Newfoundland and the East coast in general is renowned for it, and the stories of lasting friendships and bonds that formed, the fear, tragedy, triumph, and even marriage that occurred due to this is inspiring and great to watch. What a story... whenever you lose your faith in humanity, watch that and you'll get it back.
The authors interviewed the residents and the people who landed in Gander...the Come From Aways. It is one of the most poignant stories you'll ever see. The actors play multiple characters seamlessly. There are moments of laughter, and you'll definitely sob.
American Captain Beverly Bass, portrayed in 'Come From Away', has seen it live over 40 times. The musical is brilliant. I'm not a fan of musicals, especially Broadway tunes, but the Celtic flavour of Newfoundland music is undeniably infectious and moving. It's available on Apple TV. I would love to see it live when it tours but tickets are pricey. Thank goodness you're finally here Tyler!
They entertained the refugees "Newfie" style as they knew how at the time they needed it so badly. They're dressed up like real people because they were. "Screech" is a Newfoundland drink that will remove your tonsils without the need for surgery! The play set records for attendance in the US and elsewhere even though many didn't know the initial story. As for the accent, Newfoundland is closer geographically to Ireland than it is to Vancouver and many residents are of Irish descent.
Gander did 🇨🇦 proud. The respect they earned in 24 hours is incredible. They showcased who we aspire to be recognized as. 👍. Also, Justin GFY, you swifty.
Come From Away has played in the West End of London, England, Sydney, Australia, on Broadway in New York and Toronto and other global cities. It played at the Manitoba Theatre Centre in Winnipeg in October of this year. Yes, Canadians know about Come From Away. It won a Tony Award in 2017. A Bohran is a hand-held Irish drum.
"Away" if the term Newfies use for off the island -- particularly the mainland. "Screech" is a special rum liquor popular in Newfoundland. Yes, the Newfoundlanders are descended from mainly the Irish so there is a similarity of accents.
If I'm correct, the musical "Come From Away" was a Sheridan College school project that evolved into this Tony Award wining musical that has played all over the world including Broadway and London's West End. I've seen it twice and it choked me up both times. It returned to Toronto's Royal Alexandra Theatre in Oct.2024.
It’s refreshing how you admit to not knowing about certain iconic Canadian historical and cultural events and I appreciate your candour and your willingness to learn about them, however it’s absolutely terrifying how little most people in the USA know about anything to do with Canada, even the most important and world changing Canadian accomplishments. No global vision whatsoever and such a myopic attitude, especially towards your northern neighbour. Meanwhile the rest of the world and especially Canadians seem to know everything about the USA.
There must have been a dozen people telling you about it in your comment section back when you covered the Operation Yellow Ribbon story originally. I thought Tom Brokaw mentioned it, and showed a clip of a song from the Broadway show.
You are welcome for the idea for this video Tyler. I should have also pointed out that Bush jr was not only nasty to Canada through his administration, he did not thank Canada for their part in many cities or Gander, which took in all those international flights and bore the logistics, costs, the DANGER of taking that on! We are good neighbours. (Sometimes, the USA goes out of its way to prove you are not. This was one of them. I will spare you more of a lecture))
I have lots of American family and friends and they have no clue what happened on that tragic day and how the Canadian government allowed planes to land while having to take that risk on all across the country but especially in Gander. Every September 11th I share on facebook how ordinary citizens of Canada stepped up to help and how it impacted Newfoundland then and continues today with the friendships that were forged between those that were stranded and those that cared for them. When they do learn of it they are so touched by the outpouring of love and goodwill by Canadians but never ever question why they haven't learned about it. Thank you for stating what needed to be stated since Bush thanked other countries for their help but never ever uttered one word of thanks to Canada.
The news item you watched is about the current run at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto, playing until March 2, 2025… so finally, pack a bag, and fly to Toronto (if wherever you live is big enough to have an airport!! the world bigger than your home office space!) and spend some here during the Christmas season, come Toronto lit up with Christmas lights, and go to the show!
@TylerBucket that broom thing is an "ugly stick", often associated with "mummering" in Newfoundland. With Christmas coming up, I would LOVE to see you do a reaction video on Newfoundland Christmas traditions. We have a very unique culture and I think you'll get a good chuckle out of it. My Grandmother was born in Greenspond but moved to Nova Scotia when she got married. Her brothers and sisters moved to the Codroy Valley and Cape Breton. My mother and father spent a lot of time in Newfoundland at Firemen's conventions and when I was 15, they took us to see the old homestead in Greenspond. I've been to Newfoundland twice and Newfie 30 was always playing in my house when I was kid, so am I a CFA, I know my Alberta born daughter is and I hope to bring her to the island someday.
I had to laugh when you asked if this musical was well known, famous and popular among Canadians. Since this is a Broadway musical that later toured, you and your fellow Americans should know it better than any other country. Most Canadians know about the event but relatively few know about the musical.
I've been watching it, multiple times, on Apple TV. My grandson is going to Toronto to watch it live with his school the first week of December. We Canadians are so proud of it.🇨🇦
It's a wonderful musical I saw in Toronto but it was beloved on Broadway, Washington D.C. and around the US and Canada. There is such a positive story out of disaster.
Come from Away has been on Broadway, London England, Gander as well as Toronto and I'm sure other cities. I have seen it live 3 times. It is the best musical I have ever attended. It is very emotional.
If you Google it you will see that they have live shows in 2025 TX, KY, IL,IN,CA,VA,SD in Theatres, Pavillions, Auditorium, Opera House Halls. It is a VERY BIG PRODUCTION. The movie came out in 2021 but it actually started in 2015-2017.
Newfoundland has its own expressions, one which is to say visitors from other places, even from other provinces within Canada are “from away.” Come From Away is about the town of Gander opening their homes, in fact the whole town town to the passengers from all the planes from around the world that were redirected to Gander. after the terror attacks of 911. The town’s population was increased by thousands for several days. They were fed, housed and clothed as needed. As a Newfie, I am very proud of the time. And yes it is popular in Canada as well.
It also had is first performance in California. Come From Away is the name given to anyone who goes to Newfoundland and is a stranger....they have "Come from Away"
As others are saying, you owe it to yourself to watch this at least once. We've watched it on AppleTV several times and also attended a theatre to watch in person. Highly recommended.
Everyone has heard of Come From Away. Screech = moonshine - screeched in=kiss fish There is also a musical about Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale - and about the 1919 strike - called Strike! and Stand!
It was a Broadway musical that was also filmed live. The stage musical hit Broadway on March 12, 2017 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre after previews began on February 18, 2017. The show closed on October 2, 2022 after 1,670 performances and 25 previews. The film (which was filmed live in New York) aired in 2021. It's kind of like the Iran hostage crisis in 1980. The vast majority of Americans either don't remeber what the Canadian Embassy did to rescue 6 Americans ... or they just never heard about it. Americans are also taught that they never lost a war until Viet Nam. That's not true. They have conveniently shunted the history of the War of 1812 out of the history books. I mean, just ask an American who burned the White House and why? I guarantee the vast majority have never heard about it.
Come From Away is an amazing musical, I saw a touring production of it where I'm from in Canada during 2018 with one of my best friends. If you want to learn more about it I would highly suggest watching the documentary called "Gander's Ripple Effect", you can find it here-ua-cam.com/video/LTNDRvUqVQA/v-deo.html The documentary details how the show came to be and the Broadway (yes, it's been on Broadway in NYC and it was nominated for 7 Tony awards in 2017) in fact, the Broadway actors even came to Gander, Newfoundland to meet the real life people of the roles that they were playing, it's quite a heart warming documentary to watch.
Tyler has never heard anybody talk about this play, the fact that it started on Broadway in NewYork in 2017, was a big success and played for years is completely lost on him. It seems in fact that Tyler has never heard anybody talks about a lot of things.
It IS a "Period Piece"!! The period is 2001 in Gander, Newfoundland. 😄 You nailed it, just "normal, average people, who do extraordinary things." This is the east coast of Canada - people who would give you the shirts off their backs.😊🇨🇦 You must do a follow up once you've watched the whole show.❤
I suggest you read the book The Day The World Came To Town written by Jim DeFede. It's not a long book but it is what the musical was based on. You will get choked up for sure. This is a major stage play. I would probably have to the theatre district in Toronto to see it. This is no small stage show.
As a Canadian, I have heard of this but never actually seen it. I just watched it on Apple TV, and OMG, that was so emotional. I am so proud of my fellow Canadians. And the kind US people that visited and donated. Thank you Tyler. i may not have seen this if you did not post this video
Hi Tyler, great work on your Gander Newfoundland story and now with the Come From Away story. I’m a Newfoundlander and there is a couple of things that you were uncertain on. Firstly the stick or broom, it’s actually called and It’s Ugly Stick, homemade, from drift wood with beer caps nailed to it a mop head, and old rubber boat put a on the bottom, it’s a percussion instrument. Normally used at Newfoundland kitchen parties and concerts keeping the beat while dancing the Newfie Jig. Secondly, Screech is a Newfoundland dark rum, it was traditionally traded with the Jamaicans for Newfoundland cod fish, way back in the day. Keep up the great work!
If you have apple tv yes you can watch it! And I highly recommend it....but in person is definitely better if you ever get the chance....I've seen it the past 2 times its been in Calgary! :)
As a Canadian I learned most of what I knew about the events in Gander from watching this Broadway (not really Canadian?) show a few years ago! Our post-9/11 news was likely very similar to American news and this story wasn't as widely picked up as you might think!
UA-cam won't let me reply to my own comment so, sorry for making 2 posts. I know almost all of the 50 United states names, Capitals and locations on a map. I also know their major contributions to the GDP and much more because of our Social studies. I could beat most Americans in a test of that. Ask Americans to name the Canadian Provinces and their Capitals and locations and they will ask you what a province is. 1 in 10 thousand may know all 10. (I am being REALLY generous here)
Me and my friends have been having a debate here in Canada as to which state Tyler is from by his accent. He have debated Wisconsin, NY, IL & Mass, any ideas, I don't know american accents THAT well.

Americans do know about it, and it won a Tony award.
The original People were on stage with the actors on Broadway.
They came to Vancouver a couple months ago. The show was amazing! Very emotional.
Ive seen Come From Away twice, both times in Canada. Its fabulous.
This was big on Broadway, too. It was out the same time as Hamilton.
This musical is amazing. I saw it in Toronto a few years ago. It will make you laugh and cry!
As others are saying, you owe it to yourself to watch this at least once. We've watched it on AppleTV several times and also attended a theatre to watch in person. Highly recommended.
Hard to believe you didn’t hear about this play when it was on Broadway for years.
8:55 Tyler sees a ulgy stick for the first time! 😂😂😂 its a musical instrument not a broomstick. 16:25 ah, Tyler it was on Broadway!
Everyone has heard of Come From Away. Screech = moonshine - screeched in=kiss fish
There is also a musical about Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale - and about the 1919 strike - called Strike! and Stand!
Come from Away has been to Broadway and London, England, among several other countries many years ago.
If you want to learn more about it I would highly suggest watching the documentary called "Gander's Ripple Effect", you can find it here-ua-cam.com/video/LTNDRvUqVQA/v-deo.html
The documentary details how the show came to be and the Broadway (yes, it's been on Broadway in NYC and it was nominated for 7 Tony awards in 2017) in fact, the Broadway actors even came to Gander, Newfoundland to meet the real life people of the roles that they were playing, it's quite a heart warming documentary to watch.
Tyler has never heard anybody talk about this play, the fact that it started on Broadway in NewYork in 2017, was a big success and played for years is completely lost on him. It seems in fact that Tyler has never heard anybody talks about a lot of things.
He's not a boomer, so he won't see things that appeal to them and are talked about on TV channels that boomers watch.
It did a run on Broadway. ua-cam.com/video/UH-ozsBI570/v-deo.htmlsi=nxpo62QFqgBxvKOe
It IS a "Period Piece"!! The period is 2001 in Gander, Newfoundland. 😄 You nailed it, just "normal, average people, who do extraordinary things." This is the east coast of Canada - people who would give you the shirts off their backs.😊🇨🇦
You must do a follow up once you've watched the whole show.❤
I went to see Come From Away in February of 2020, in Toronto, just one month before the world went into lockdown because of Covid.
It was a Broadway, West End London and world-wide hit. You should do a reaction to the musical.And...I get tears just watching the trailer.
The broomstick is called an ugly stick. Its part of Newfoundland musical culture like the washboard in Appalachian music.
I've never heard of it and I live in Nova Scotia Canada but it seems cool ❤
As a Canadian i was given the oportunity to see come from away and i absolutely LOVED it, if you get the chance i could not recomend it more.
I’m a Canadian and have yet to see Come From Away but your review is inspiring me to see it the next time it comes around to our province
Tyler, this was a smash hit on Broadway ages ago. It played in the West End (London) as well and has traveled the world. You should get out more!
In Gander on the 10 th anniversary there is a yt video explaining the couple who created the musical.
I saw it at the Royal Alex when it first played in Toronto..loved it
Oh yeah it's popular. I went to TO to see it with friends. It was wonderful!
Newfoundland is famous for its music.
Hi Tyler, great work on your Gander Newfoundland story and now with the Come From Away story. I’m a Newfoundlander and there is a couple of things that you were uncertain on. Firstly the stick or broom, it’s actually called and It’s Ugly Stick, homemade, from drift wood with beer caps nailed to it a
mop head, and old rubber boat put a on the bottom, it’s a percussion instrument.
It toured the US during Trump's first term. Ivanka went. It made the US news on all networks.
Tyler, this is a NYC Broadway Production, alot of the main People from Gander where flown to NY to see the Production
I've seen the show twice and it IS amazing. It's really well done
It was healing for a lot of people.
That broom is a Newfoundland instrument called an Ugly Stick - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ugly_stick
If you have apple tv yes you can watch it! And I highly recommend it....but in person is definitely better if you ever get the chance....I've seen it the past 2 times its been in Calgary! :)
come from away is doing a bunch of shows in gander next spring/summer
As a Canadian I learned most of what I knew about the events in Gander from watching this Broadway (not really Canadian?) show a few years ago! Our post-9/11 news was likely very similar to American news and this story wasn't as widely picked up as you might think!
I watched the interviews with the cast of the show. It was entertaining.
Yes this is right ✅️ U have too see it !!! It's about people there how they helped them !!!
One of the musicals I've seen.❤
It was a delightful historic event.
(I am being REALLY generous here)
What a cheeky actress 😉😉
That was so wholesome to watch ❤🎉 Thanks 🇨🇦 🎉
I get tears stain just watching your clips.
Me and my friends have been having a debate here in Canada as to which state Tyler is from by his accent. He have debated Wisconsin, NY, IL & Mass, any ideas, I don't know american accents THAT well.
Tyler, it won Tony Awards (aka the U.S. equivalent of Oscars for plays and musicals). There a lot of Americans who have heard of this musical. It's okay that you haven't. But this was not a small thing.
It was a hit in New York. My best friend saw it in New York. She’s from Alberta. The show toured everywhere.
Well, it was a modest hit (unlike the film which flopped). It's not in the 21st Century pantheon with the likes of "Hamilton," "Wicked," etc.
Tyler, learn more about Newfoundland from Shaun Majumder and his 'story vortex' or his bit about educating bullies
