Here in Windsor it easily gets above 30 C, with mad humidity from the Great Lakes. A couple weeks ago it was still below zero, today it's 18 C. Canadians can survive anywhere!
The people wearing shoes jumping into the water is because when you jump from a fairly high height you can hurt your feet. We used to jump from the top of a quarry into the water, everyone had water running shoes so they didn’t damage their feet. Everyone, thinks of water as soft but, the higher the jump the more pressure on the feet going into the water.
I agree with you 100%, that water can give your feet a good smack - but also might be zebra mussels too. Those things will slice your feet open pretty fast. I don't think they have zebra mussels in OZ ;-)

A quarry is a big hole in the ground that gradually fills up with rain water. The height of that quarry is about 40 feet or more. A great place to jump into and swim. The y have a track built by the machine that originally carried the rock from the quarry. The one track down to the water’s edge is for those who don’t want to jump. The top of the quarry wall is what we jump off. Was great fun. Very few injuries happened.
Reason for wearing shoes in water - zebra mussels. Those invasive little @ssholes will slice your feet to shreds. Plus the rocks themselves can be pretty sharp.

I say they are wearing shoes running off the cliff because depending on the location depends on what the bottom of the watter is like. Some places are extremely rocky and have sharp rock that are absolutely not pleasant to step on. I'm sure there are other examples this is just the prime example I can think of. There are lots of beaches in my area they are all rocky not a single sandy beach around 😊

The "Beer Store" is a real thing. In Ontario, alcohol is controlled by the government. You go to the "Beer Store" for most but not all your beer. You go to the LCBO for harder liquor and most wines. (LCBO = Liquor Control Board of Ontario)
Similar in Manitoba. Beer at the beer vendor, also, along with wine and hard liquor, at the Manitoba Liquor Mart. Both are controlled by the provincial government.

We're both huge countries with massive awesome beauty. We're both commonwealth countries. We both have every climate from desert to rainforest. I take exception to the commercial saying lakes are frozen 6 months of the year. They are not,... I don't care which province your in but you won't see lakes frozen enough to skate on until after the new year and then they are thawing again mid march. So more like 2.5 to 3 months of the year.
I like ice fishing. We can walk on the lakes just before Christmas. We drive on the ice in January. We cannot put the boat on the water until the ice goes out after the May long weekend. So.. about 5 months. The ice was 34 inches thick in February.
I know plenty of places in central-northern BC that have lakes frozen from October-March, and we're the warmest province. 🤷♀️ Northern AB, SK, & MB, ETC I'm sure have their own. Hudson Bay itself freezes over for a decent amount of time every year.

The prairies are awesome by the way. Manitoba has over 100,000 lakes and Saskatchewan almost as many. Nothing is more spectacular than a sunset on the prairies. I grew up on a farm in the prairies next to a river, in a forest with our house on hill, it was beautiful. I explored country roads on horseback either following the river or just admiring the patchwork of colour in the fields next to those dirt roads. Blue flax, yellow canola, sunflowers, wheat, barley and oats. I agree the mountains and ocean are beautiful but there is a lot to be said for the prairies too!

An Australian can appreciate long road trips, but I've driven for almost a week at 8-10 hour days across this country. It's pretty frickin vast.

The ad with the Proclaimers song is one of my Pet Peeves. Advertising a Canadian brand with foreign music. Sadly this is quite common for any shows, movies, commercials made in Canada, most of them use foreign music instead of supporting Canadian musical artists.
Ah, but the Proclaimers (and that song in particular) are still very popular in Canada. We also have a lot of borrowed Scottish cultural elements, like bagpipes and kilts for military and some funerals, a lot of our east coast accents are quite similar to Scottish... hell, we have a province called "Nova Scotia" Literally "New Scotland".

Shoes when jumping from cliff... you usually have to climb rocks or through bush to get to the cliff to jump from - what else are you going to do with your shoes?
I can't speak for everyone but I have 'watershoes' and in Canada there are so many rock and different things you can step in - that wasn't a great example either but there are some real heights you can come off of, into the water as well and that can make your feet sore

Definately TRUE that Canada has the most square feet per person. We are the second largest country in the world. Our population is 37 million. Compare that to say, the US, a bit smaller country, yet a population of 140 million. I believe Australia's population is almost 26 million and 6th largest country.

The majority of the Canadians live as close to the US border as possible and the largest population of Canada in concentrated mainly in Southern Ontario and in Quebec along the St Lawrence river. Anyways that's why we have a lot of land in Canada unused, because who wants to really live in the Nunavut Territory or anywhere North of the 60° parallel line? Swimming in a lake can mean walking on a lake bottom that has sharp rocks and stuff. Wearing something on your feet is for safety.
The ad with the Proclaimers song is one of my Pet Peeves. Advertising a Canadian brand with foreign music. Sadly this is quite common for any shows, movies, commercials made in Canada, most of them use foreign music instead of supporting Canadian musical artists.
Ah, but the Proclaimers (and that song in particular) are still very popular in Canada. We also have a lot of borrowed Scottish cultural elements, like bagpipes and kilts for military and some funerals, a lot of our east coast accents are quite similar to Scottish... hell, we have a province called "Nova Scotia" Literally "New Scotland".
He said “square feet of awesomeness”. It’s clearly a tongue in cheek joke about how much wide open space there is in Canada. Other countries are more densely populated than the Great White North so “more square feet of awesomeness per person” is not only funny, it’s accurate.
Shoes when jumping from cliff... you usually have to climb rocks or through bush to get to the cliff to jump from - what else are you going to do with your shoes?

Regarding the one with the guy who walks to Canada for beer...we just have better beer than the US.
The commercials are about 100 times better than the beer :)

I can't speak for everyone but I have 'watershoes' and in Canada there are so many rock and different things you can step in - that wasn't a great example either but there are some real heights you can come off of, into the water as well and that can make your feet sore

Actually my ancestors have quite a few people living in Australia. I looked up my surname "Leggo" and found the largest population there.
The second largest country in the world but has about the same or slightly lower population than California, about 80% of the population is about 100km from the US border because a lot of Canada is just not able to build in most of the country, because of it's forests, hard minerals, mountains and lakes, the Canadian Shield prevents a lot of expansion

Definately TRUE that Canada has the most square feet per person. We are the second largest country in the world. Our population is 37 million. Compare that to say, the US, a bit smaller country, yet a population of 140 million. I believe Australia's population is almost 26 million and 6th largest country.

The land per person comment at the time was true. Our population is exploding right now, but at the time was like 32 million with the 2nd most land only behind russia who has way more people.
You got it wrong, it's square foot of awesomeness per person... Australia does have the most square foot per person, but a huge wasteland for the most part. But that was the 2010 winter, we didn't have the 2008 here in Canada.

Its not wrong bruh. Our country only has a population of 38 million people but we're the second largest country on the planet after Russia. And Russia has 143 million people, so its facts. We have the most square feet of land per person than any other country, although to be fair around 70% of that land is uninhabitable for human civilization.

The majority of the Canadians live as close to the US border as possible and the largest population of Canada in concentrated mainly in Southern Ontario and in Quebec along the St Lawrence river. Anyways that's why we have a lot of land in Canada unused, because who wants to really live in the Nunavut Territory or anywhere North of the 60° parallel line? I guess it would be like an Aussie not wanting to live in the desert part of Australia? The majority of the Aussies lived near the water whether it be near the Pacific Ocean or the Indian Ocean. I know we had Beer Stores in BC, but that was Years ago...not sure about today...
