    Checkmark/check, is common here, but we use tik sometimes too. In Canada it's called a Cottage, not a summer house..lol Convenience store, or corner store, or just use the stores name. Stroller mostly..have heard it called a pram now and then...not so often buggy. Never heard it called a trolley. Jumping jacks. (As for the toy, jacks, when i was young, they used to be made out of metal, don't know about nowadays.) LMAO Police, cop, the heat, and a shit ton of not too nice other names😆😆 Mounties is only used by name in areas that don't have provincial forces, or local leo's. (And even then, some might still just call them cops/police.)

    Cyclone is typically in the Pacific ocean, hurricanes are in Atlantic. Canada is a till, or register Tried to find an origin to the word Till in this context, but could only find any reasonable descriptors in Quora...so make of it, what you will..hereya go; *"The term "till" originates from the Old English word "tyl," which means to "count" or "calculate." In the context of retail, a "till" refers specifically to the drawer or compartment in a cash register where cash is kept."* *"It is a derivative of the Anglo-Norman word “tylle” meaning “compartment” or Middle English “tillen” meaning “draw”. Originally the till was a draw under the counter used to store cash."* 😊

    Hey, my friend, you got the right players. However, in the wrong order, forgiven!! The point you've probably missed is the fact that all ten are Canadians. Canadians love the fact that the world is learning about the best/toughest game ever. We applaud your recognition of the top ten best ever. However, the fools in the world that pod cast about hockey and have zero intelligence about the game, more is the pity. I say come one, come all to Canada, strap on a pair of skates, and play hockey with full contact!! Real appreciation will soon follow, guaranteed!! That appreciation will come from those who can still communicate. The people that pod cast about hockey have zero idea of what they're professing to know!! Again, somebody got it correct.... that's what you did. If you took a deeper dive into the top 50 NHL players of all time, you'd be shocked that 90% are Canadians. I'm proud of you for getting right. Please dig deeper when you speak of hockey again (as the saying goes, don't mess with Canadians) any other country in the world is a distant second to Canada in terms of hockey

    The prisoners revolt at Camp 30 is kinda infamous. First thing you need to understand is that most POW camps are more camp-like than prison-like. The POWs are more or less free to roam about all day, rather than be locked up. The POWs had some harsher measures imposed on them due to factors relating to the larger war, not anything they had personally done. So they revolted & occupied the mess hall. They armed themselves with improvised weapons: steel bars, broken table legs, etc. The Canadian guards were heavily out numbered, so they called for some reinforcements from a nearby base. When the Canadian soldiers arrived, they stormed the mess hall. But instead of arming themselves with rifles and bayonets, they had hockey sticks & a multi-hour brawl ensued. Eventually, the POWs surrendered and life in the camp more or less went back to normal.

    I'm familiar with the POW camp at Clarington, and my neighbour grew up very close to it. For run-of-the-mill German prisoners, the WW2 POW camps in Canada were fairly pleasant experiences. . . so much so that many of the prisoners immigrated to Canada after the war. But the camp at Clarington was for important officers, many of them hardcore Nazis, and many guilty of war crimes. Ordinary prisoners were sent to low-security camps in rural Canada, where they were often allowed to hire themselves out to local farmers, and were often given leave to go to town or just go fishing. Canadians were not hostile to ordinary German soldiers, but they had no sympathy for the actual Nazis. . . . During WW1, the Canadian forces had numerous artists who were expected to document what they saw for future generations. Among them were A.Y Jackson and Frederick Varley, both later members of the "Group of Seven" painters that dominate Canadian art history. This was a well-organized military program. And when the fighting stopped, some more, like Mary Riter Hamilton were employed to document the aftermath. . . . During World War 2, a similar program existed, under the direction of George F. G. Stanley. Stanley later went on to oversee the design and adoption of our lovely flag. Among the artists that Stanley nurtured in the program were Molly Lamb Bobak, and Alex Colville (who is widely considered one of the greats in Canadian art --- check out his paintings). There was a similar program during the Korean war, and a fourth is in operation today. . . . It may be less publicized in Australia, but the Australian military did exactly the same thing. Notable Australian war artists include Tom Roberts, George Lambert, William Dobell, Albert Tucker, Nora Heysen and Donald Friend.

    She painted the "war torn" land. She didn't want the "horror" of war to fade before she saw, and painted, the land. It would "heal" over years and decades and memory can fade. Your not far off. "Reformatory Schools" are... one step away (maybe) from a prison. "Juvenile" offenders were sent there. It was a boarding school and detention centre....

    Haunting/sad. I remember this sinking, being in my twenties at the time (1975). The lake is huge, very cold and 406 meters (1,332 feet) deep. Can't see one side from the other. Look like a sea. The largest freighters now are over a thousand feet long. Iron ore pellets are not large. It was before the weather service was as good as now and the blizzard like storm came along with the winds switching directions on the ships. Waves can be big, 28+ feet and often, slamming the ships. Our November is a time of major changes in weather from fall to winter. Ships still have problems out there, but limits are set. Many times shipping companies have been known to encourage ships to go out when they shouldn't. They do have ships from overseas pass through the great lakes, through the different locks and all of the way to the farthest point.

    I live off the west coast of Canada, and while I don't think we have magpies, crows have swooped me a few times. It happens in spring when they get very territorial when they have chicks. One of them hit me HARD in the back of my head a couple times before I got out of range. I was afraid to go that way again because I know crows are smart and recognise faces. Let's not forget our angry cobra chicken (aka Canada Goose). I too was traumatised as a young child by being chased and bitten by those foul creatures. As for heat, in the summer of 2021 we had a heat wave in British Columbia, and the town of Lytton set a new temperature record of 49.6C! Sadly, a week later about 90% of the town was destroyed by fire. It rarely rains in the summer, so there are hundreds of wildfires (and man-made ones) each year.

    Canada has hit a wall of sorts due to our current Prime Minister not doing enough (or really anything) to combat our steady stagnation, he will likely be out of the picture soon enough and things will be going back to how they were. Our immigration is a detriment right now due to his short sightedness and wanted to appease everyone who aren’t Canadians, hopefully things will get better for both our Commonwealth Nations. Cheers Mate!

      Electing a different government in Canada isn't going to change anything, they all basically have the same platform and are lobbied by the same people. Our Minister of Immigration actually admitted last week that he made a mistake with too much immigration. They've only taken baby steps to fix it, but just the fact that they admitted they made a mistake is amazing as they NEVER admit they made mistakes.

      You are wrong. We invested in OTHER things that are starting to pay off. like AI and tech... It's just that those hubs are concentrated in I(Ontario and Quebec (OVER 1/2 of the population lives there). AND we are one of the world's greatest natural resources holders... Manufacturing is another thing. We CAN'T compete with the investments that American or Chinese governments push into theirs. BUT, we do the subcontract work they need to make it happen..

  • @overworlder
    @overworlder 23 дні тому

    The resource extraction model is an artifact of comparative advantage under the global trade system. It's worth noting Australia and Canada have largely avoided the Dutch disease despite being major resource exporters. If the free trade system breaks down, which is looking likely, Australia and Canada will have to retool their economies and they will. Australia’s already been through it before - in 1973 Australia’s main export market the UK disappeared behind the EEC tariff wall. It was a huge economic shock but Australia bounced back. I assume Canada was cushioned by its trade with the US. The resource sector is only a fraction of the economy - like other developed economies, services are 70-80% of the Australian economy, depending how you measure. if we were pushed back into manufacturing both Australia and Canada have the natural resources, capital and skills to do so.
