My grandpa also used to make wooden whistles for my sisters and I. I could never remember what type of tree and what time of year to make them though. Memories I hold near and dear to my heart and clearly I’m not alone in this. I’m sure you miss your grandfather as much as I miss mine.
Well done sir! Almost exactly how my old man showed me to do it some forty years ago in Norway. He stressed that you must allways make the mouthpiece in the thin end of the stick so that the bark wont crack when you pull it off. I also carve just through the brown part in the center, makes a sligthly different tone I guess. But yours worked fine also, so again; well done.
Nice to see it. Im from the north of Spain and my grandpa use to do those same whistles for me when i was a child about 50 years ago. So... grandpas all around the world doing the same for their grandchildren!!
My dad and I spent hours making those when I was a kid about 40 years ago. I will be teaching my grandkids to do the same thing. Thank you very much for the video. Awesome.
In my childhood, when I lived near the forest, we also made such whistles and even pipes with my friends. The best were elderberry or hazelnut branches.
My grandpa made one of these for me when i was about 5. I'm 48 now. I think i drove my parents crazy blowing that thing for hours. I think gramps got in more trouble for making it than i did blowing it. Now i try to buy the noiseiest toys i can find for my friends kids birthdays and always make sure they have new batteries in them.
I've been trying to make these for years.Have had no success.Would like more of a detailed explanation of what you're doing and the shape and depth and whatever it is because i've tried it and cannot get it to work
All i know that best time to make these is srpring. The bark is easier to remowe. If it does not work blow harder. If still no luck adjust the air path or the depth of the hole in the wood or bark. Make sure that the hole in the bark has a clean cut. Good luck.
My grandpa taught me how to do this but i forgot... he also died when i was 10 (22 year ago now) so we couldn't do repeat trips and bond over fishing and stuff like that :(
Hi, is there any way to make the bark come off easier? I've harvested a bit further into summer and I can't get the bark off, any ideas? I'm trying soaking it now.
Wow that rep-lie was faster than my microwave lol,ah yea i am trying that as we speak & thank you love your video on it watched it numerous of time thanks
Well i ain't gonna give yup on this one,but i never got the bark of after steeping it but it was older branches so ill lo0k tomorrow i will get something to whistle lol, thanks again. Have a nice 1.
Daniel Davis I bought a cheap knife and modifiend the blade a bit. Then i made a new handle from scrap wood and brass. I also etched the blade to make the pattern on it.
I am interested in learning to make woodwind instruments, my uncle is a luthier and interested in teaching me to build/repair guitars, but to make different styles of traditional block/transverse flutes and panflutes might be fun and could be a little sideline for us, if I could even sell them on fairly cheap it could be an earner, plus I'd love to learn more about these instruments in general as I love my woodwinds, particularly recorders and other traditional block flutes, lovely sounding instruments!
I made that knife my self. The blade is from cheap stainles steel knife. I made some modifications to the blade and the handle is all my doing. Wood and brass. Thanks for watching.
Ostin motonetistä halvan rosteripuukon ja muokkasin terää pikkusen. Kahvan tein sitte kokonaan ite. Terään tein ne kuviot ensin permanenttitussilla ja sitte etsasin suolavedessä sähkön kanssa. Mä tykkäisin myös tehdä puukkoja mutta ei huvita yhtään se tupen tekeminen.
If you did that the full length of the stick and made a row of holes in the bark maybe you'd play us an Irish jig? Show us some real skill as opposed to just a singular high pitched note
My grandfather made one for me when i was a kid. I was thrilled. I still have that very whistle today...40 or so yrs later.
Awesome.
I'd been racking my brain trying to remember how my daddy taught me to do this!!! Thank you so much for posting it.
It’s important to do this in the spring when the bark is wet between the main part of the wood otherwise it’s too hard to loosen.
Thanks pal, you answered without me having to ask !
During fall and winter can we soak the wood in water to loosen it up?
You took me back many decades, when i was still a kid and my grandpa was still alive, great memories, *Thanks*
Thanks for watching.
R.I.P to your grandfather :(

Yes. You need to do it when the growing season starts. You might be able to do this now if you soak wood in water. Thanks for watching.
Wow that rep-lie was faster than my microwave lol,ah yea i am trying that as we speak & thank you love your video on it watched it numerous of time thanks

Hi! Why you call it Pajupil? In Estonian language it is called "pajupill" what means "willow music instrument" or willow whistle
It should say pajupilli. 😖
Yes :) but how do you know that name at all?
Im from Finland and in Finnish willow whistle is called pajupilli.
Selvä! I am inkerisuomalainen :) But born in Estonia.
I use your video as a tutorial for children studying at home :)
