Thank you for another great video. I learn so much from you. You are my favorite channel Simon!
Isn't this a reupload of an older video?
@@ToptenzNettop10 I also am already subscribed to it! 😀
For some reason, I am unable to post my own comment, so I'll post it here. The list forgot Richard Rowland Kirkland, known as "The Angel of Marye's Heights", (August 1843 - September 20, 1863), Friedrich Lengfeld (29 September 1921 - 12 November 1944), a German lieutenant. and Marine Guy Gabaldon (March 22, 1926 - August 31, 2006.
I had a friend named Walter who was born in Poland. Some how and he never knew why, Walter ended up in a Death Camp on the French/German border. Once when working on the fence a German Guard with a machine gun, walked up behind Walter and asked him if he hated Hitler. With only a moment's thought Walter said "yes" and awaited his quick death. The guard replied "I hate Hitler too." The next and every day until the liberation of that camp Walter found a sandwich in the boot print of that guard.
But the story does not end here. After the war ended, when working as a police offer in Frankfurt, Walter meet up with his savoir and repaid his debt by supplying much needed food for the family. They lost touch, but never forgot each other.
Soldiers are human too. They don't like killing people
Wow...
Amazing video... Thank you for taking the time to do the research...
Respect, dignity and honour in the wreckage of war. A fascinating watch.
I had to replay the beginning... could have sworn I heard “a Japanese boy who fed a starving POW a Luftwaffe pilot.” Did a haaaard double take.
What's strange with that? When you're starving, you'd eat anything. Even a Luftwaffe pilot.
;-)

One incredible example was the Jewish doctor who treated Hitler's Mother who died of cancer being saved during the Second World War by Hitler himself. See details on Google for details of this amazing fact.
I could never be okay with Hitler being in the “savior” part.
The guys in #9 had a song written about them. Sabaton - no bullets fly.

I was hoping John Rabe would be mentioned, the guy's a legend.
Simon, the only thing your outfit is missing is a Star Fleet Telecom Badge. Sorry, I saw that red shirt and couldn't unsee the badge. lol
Can you imagine how awkward it must have been for Gangl to explain himself to the americans?
Gangl was heading up the local Austrian resistance by then.

Thank you for mentioning John Rabe, the Living Buddha of Nanking
Also #4 had a song also written about it. Sabaton - the last battle.
#9 too No Bullets Fly
These are examples showing that there is no price too high for valor, courage, honor, and simple human decency.
#6 I think you should have also mentioned that the incident with Hosenfeld and Szpilman was turned into an film, "The Pianist", starring Adam Brody as Szpilman.
Didn't Thomas Kretschmann play Hosenfeld?
Hearing the last two stories brought me to tears.
We also persecuted the Japanese here in Canada, as well. We're thoroughly ashamed of the event.

I had to got back to that bit, solved the problem of what I saw the first time around...:)
How about Guy Gabaldon, who convinced 1,300 Japanese soldiers and civilians to surrender on Saipan?
These kind of stories are way more common than you think...:)
Must be many more who helped others in one way or another including Albert Goring ( who had a more famous brother ) Schindler to name a more famous one. How many hundreds or thousands are unknown.
The last one though. Why didn't the jewish guy wait until after the war was over before going to Germany?

My late brother in law's mother smuggled food into Norway from Sweden(neutral country) for the Norwegians. If captured she would have faced death as a spy.Sometimes heroes do not need to carry guns.
Alright Simon you need to reference some of these 2 books set cover these subjects to. I've read lots of books from your videos love this channel
Do a video on the boer war
Oscar Schindler should've been on this list.
Simon to short to little info. Such a great title. Please make a extended d version of this and tell us more about the cases
As always, a well researched, scripted and presented video, however, I have one gripe that prevents me from awarding a like.
My gripe is the use of soft words for bad things and in this case the bad thing was loss of human lives described as collateral damage.
Simon Whistler whistles @ 5:34 xD
Another seamless and informed presentation. Thank you. I think this is my fave UA-cam channel and yes I am subscribed!
Another awesome history video
What about Raoul Wallenberg? Have you. Have you covered his story? His family was involved in WW2 also. TopTenz is excellent and thorough, and I would be interested in seeing your coverage on background and outcome of Wallenberg’s participation in WW2. Thank you! I find your videos sooo interesting (and disturbing) . . . not to mention shocking.
One of my favorite channels! You are the ultimate narrator; excellent knowledge, unbiased and a wicked sense of humor!
A little hope for humanity.

This was fascinating. I've saved this video as I want to dig deeper into these stories.
I tell my son every morning! If you ever become the supreme leader of Germany, and you invaded and conquered many nations, do not and i mean do not invade Russia! Rarely has that ever went well for any nation!
Or Afghanistan! Never invade Afghanistan!
@red rage
You're right. Pretty sure Simon made a video in the past hinting that Russian forces were at the brink of collapse as well. Russia genuinely got lucky.
Any one who invades a country, as the German invaded the Soviet Union, deserve to have their arses handed to them. Lice helped to defeat both the French and Germans.
Oskar schindler not supposed to be here?
Fascinating! Thank you.

I wish Simon would wear a newsboy hat or something. All I can think about is eggs...
I do not approve.
you shoudn't number them, every story here is number one.

I can't argue with your statement, because it's the truth!

Simon love your work
war is rarely clear cut
How about Adolf Galland and Douglas Bader?
YES!
To many times people on one side or the other get painted the same as others, always nice to see some still kept their humanity. Lessons to learn.
Your videos are always interesting. Also love Biographics. As a history nerd, thanks for doing these.
Another awesome!! Keep up the great work.
You missed Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, Why? How?
Big Miss - Spillman was played by Adrian Brodie in the "Pianist" and the German officer who helped him was potrayed,
FYI in case you were NOT aware, HITLER himself was Jewish.
I am always astonished of the bravery by those who win the VC, GC, MoH, PMoF/Congr. GM etc, but those who are honoured as "Righteous Among the Nations" rise above all others. IMO their bravery is a result of a calculated, deliberate decision to act and - if ever afterward discovered or betrayed - they could still face execution for that action though it may have been done years before. Therefore, IMHO their bravery stands alone, and rises above all others. 👍
*Number 1:* Some of your opponents in Fortnite
Interesting how most of these were Nazis. There is human decency and kindness even in members of atrocious regimes such as the Third Reich. It's an insult to call these people "Nazis." Gangl is probably my favorite of the ones listed. As an American with German heritage and a grandfather who fought for the Allies during WWII I feel happy to see people who defied the evil that took hold of my homeland during those awful years.
There is a scene at the end of a movie about WWII (The Big Red One, I think) where a platoon of American soldiers find a German soldier in the woods and shoot him. As they continue on their patrol, somebody runs up to them to tell them Hitler's dead, the war is over. The soldiers look at each other with an "oh, s**t" look, and run back to the German soldier, only to find he's still alive. They knock themselves out trying to save him. That switch from warrior to compassionate savior in the blink of an eye I found moving.
The mass suicides were not mere issues of dishonor: it was often a desperate escape from various fates worse than death (including but not limited to being eaten alive by American forces) that the Imperial Military had impressed upon them that they were there to defend the islanders from. (with the heavy level of propaganda on both sides its not 100% clear if the soldiers spreading this disinformation realized the degree to which they were lying)
This is why men like Bob and Guy Gabaldon (Mexican American raised by a Japanese family) were able to assuage fears by walking up to men unarmed with some chocolate and knowing the same childhood stories as their foes.
The a Japanese were not the only ones who were put in camps in America - Italian and German Americans were, too. One of our family friends was in a camp, and I spoke to one who lived in Ohio. At the end of the war, they were given $50 and a return train ticket.
Mr. Whistler helped out the 486 men he beat the crap out of after being attacked. He even donated blood for the attackers of those who were compatable.
I met a Jewish Concentration Camp survivor at a lecture. I asked him how he thought he managed to survive.
He said at one point he got very sick and figured he would die but an SS officer for some reason took a liking to him and took him to a better hospital than what was at the camp.
What about the time that the Red Baron forced Snoopy to land his Sopwith behind enemy lines, only to offer him a Christmas toast? :)
