Old Skater vs. Skater Trainers - Can They Help?

- Old guy tries Skater Trainers-can they actually help bring my tricks back? 🤔
I’m 50 years old, and while I still skate bowls and mini ramps, my street tricks have faded over the years. My ollies are barely a few inches high, and let’s not even talk about my kickflips… 😅 So I had to try SkaterTrainers to see if they could help me rebuild my confidence and technique.
In this video, I put Skater Trainers to the test to see if they actually work for:
✅ Getting my ollie height back
✅ Relearning pop shove-its & kickflips
✅ Reducing slams and building confidence
✅ Helping older skaters rebuild muscle memory
I also answer the big question: Are Skater Trainers a useful training tool or just a gimmick for beginners?
If you’re an older skater trying to get back into tricks, or even a beginner wondering if these things are worth it, this video is for you!
👉 Have you tried Skater Trainers? Do you think they actually help, or are they just training wheels for skaters? Let me know in the comments!

Loved this video! Feels like we’re in a similar chapter with BMX and skateboarding. Currently have a tow strap drilled to the roof of my garage so I can hold it like a safety rope while trying kickflips 😅
Love it!!! That’s another great idea!!! 💥
I know I've said this before, but Matt, you're a real asset to our community by providing content we can use and relate to in a fun and entertaining way.
Thanks Scott. Appreciate the encouraging words 🙌👊
Matt, you provide very knowledgeable content that is easy to digest. As stated in many comments already, keep up the good work. I see you answering everybody with a personal touch and we appreciate that you can do that for now, but…….I predict this channel is going to keep growing and gaining viewers exponentially for a long time. You should be very proud🤘
Wow!!! Thanks so much for the encouraging words! 🙏
I haven’t been able to skate much at all lately with the weather where I am, so I’ve been using one of those Vew-Do balance boards. I re-gripped it since it came with awful looking graphic griptape and left a big opening for a bunch of reissue late 80s/early 90s stickers so it looks cool to look down at. I’ll just stand on it and do little squats and curls with dumbbells while balancing on it. I think it’s really helped my skating in “the off season”.
I’ve always wanted to try these too, but I live in an apartment building with downstairs neighbors who would not be psyched. Anyway thanks for another great video!
Thanks for sharing your experience with balance boards. I would like to try one of those too 🙌
Hey man. Good vid. I'm 48 and as I've disclosed before I was really only into BMX. Now that I've been getting back into BMX, doing simple balancing riding, endos and fakies got me all gassed out. You reminded me of me in this video😅. I feel your pain broski
Glad we’re not alone. The day after I filmed this, I went to small flatland jam with some friends here in St Louis. I’m super beginner when it comes to flatland tricks and after 3 hours of riding, my legs have been SUPER sore all week long. 🤣
Awesome kickflip ! I thought even the first one counted. When I had friends learning ollies, I would get worn out tennis balls and put them over the wheels. That was a good way to have some stability and a little movement.
The tennis ball idea sounds cool. thanks for sharing!
Vertical leap exercises is where its at.
Thanks for the input 🙌
Brother I have not seen anyone turn their bolts upside down in so long. I still have boards set up like this lol. I am 47 and still skating. Keep going
Ha! I wondered if anyone else remembered doing that. lol to see you’re still skating 👊
I remember a friend on mine back in the late 70s/early 80s had these things called Skyhooks on his skateboard. They bolted to the top of your deck and you slid your feet underneath them.
Interesting, I’ve never heard of those before, but I’m surprised more companies didn’t try and make stuff like that.
Google it. You will see them online
Google Skyhooks Skateboard
They are in the same type of gimmick category.... Skyhooks actually came out before there was ever such thing as the Ollie....
Imagine a few 50 year old guys including me trying to Ollie beside you in your garage hahahaha Someone might say, Is late I got to go to sleep hahaha
I'd be saying that around 2pm because I'd be ready for a nap!
Hahaha! That would be fun, I’m sure 🙌
Keep up the good work. Be safe
Appreciate it. 👊
I bought an pair as soon as they came out. Honestly.. I mean they are good for popping. But I was so used to rolling.. What we did was put a piece of old carpet on the grass and ollied on to it.. Even spaced it a bit for a gap. I just feel like you gotta get used to rolling vs stationary.
That carpet gap idea is cool!
@TheNostalgicNeighborhood you're gonna fly off your board. Key is to try to stay on. My homie told us it would help with bending our knees to land.. it did help. Office type carpet worked best.. you'd still roll a little on the landing..plus. no dirt and grass in the wheels.
6:27! Once I learned carve grinds, I lost stand up grinds. These days it's rock n rolls, slashes and carve grinds and that's about it. If I do all 3 in a run it's a good thing!
Those are still fun staples!!! I can get all that on the mini ramp and smaller bowls, but on the big stuff I’m mostly down to slashes and maybe carve grinds in corners if I’m feeling brave enough.
Love, your videos, Matt. I'm looking forward to seeing your mini skateshop diorama vid.
Appreciate that! Stay tuned! Probably another week or two for the diorama. My stupid 3D printer broke and I make to make one crucial piece by hand. Arguably, the coolest part of the whole thing 😎
Hope you do a Steve Nazar aka (T&C Surf) video soon, because he was all over in the 80’s, also Bad Boy Club 🥳
That’s a great idea!!! Thanks 🙌
@@TheNostalgicNeighborhood That would be an extended video. Can’t wait! 🤘
Thanks for sharing! I'm not too far behind you in age and skated in the late 80s to nearly 2000 and have not been on a board since. I've really been debating lately to get back into it. This product might just help!
Right on! It's never too late to get back on the board 🙌
Solid kick!!!! So glad they make bowls and mini's for us 50 year olds cause even at 12 my ollie's were pure trash hahahaha. Have a great weekend!
Thanks!!! Yes, We have that mini bowl at our skatepark and it’s just so much fun!!! Hope you have a great weekend too 🍻
You're getting some good spin!
I remember being able to double kickflip back in the day. 🤣 My legs are so out of shape and I’m overweight. Gotta keep trying and build up some strength again.
@TheNostalgicNeighborhood Keep going! It will get better and you will get stronger! 🔥
@ thanks bro 🙌
Thanks for the video.
Will have to check them out🤘
Right on! Thanks for watching
That’s funny. I ordered some of these few days before this video. As a beginner at 43 my legs don’t want to jump anymore. So I’m hoping these will help me learn to Ollie. Didn’t think about also pop shove it’s. Great video again.
Thanks! Would love to hear how you like them!
@ when they arrive I will let you know
I bought some of those about a year or so ago. I’m 53 and hit my first practice Ollie in decades. Working on my balance with a balance board. It seems to be more than an issue when you get older.
Nice! I’ve been thinking of trying balance board for the winter too.
Great stuff!! Just keep on👏🏻
Thank you! Will do!
I’d love to say take your slams or it’s a crutch but I’m 47 whacked my head last year and just got back into it then. I’m definitely getting a set. Thank you dude 🤙
Yeah bro head injuries are no joke. I had to tone it down with all my sports so I can keep on cruising without taking too much damage. Wearing a helmet is not as shameful as it used to be, at least we're still out there doing what makes us feel alive!
@ hell ya dude👊 probably invest in a helmet too cause it did sketch me out a bit lol. (At least if I’m gonna be trying tricks, out cruising it’ll be all good)
@@bobsacamanno5123 right on brother. I want to be like those ancient fellas I see at the ski hill, still getting out there in their 80s. Keep on rollin!
I'm 48 and don't ever want to stop ripping
Right on!!! Yeah, first hand experience… those slams can definitely take a toll and it just takes so much longer to recover the older we get!
Hello! Really liked your video. What board are you riding? :) looks reslly fun.
Thanks!!! It a Jeff Gross x John Lucero “forever” deck from Black Label. It’s definitely a fun deck. I made a video about it on my channel last fall.
Thanks👍
Thanks for watching! 🙏
I’ve been doing a little bit of free styling and I just got back into skating, some bowls and mini ramps with my 19-year-old son who already skates way better than me lol
Love that you’re skating with your son. So cool! 😎
Great review. As someone who got back into skating a few years ago, I think its just that the concrete is harder now! Lol.
Ha! The concrete definitely seems harder now!
I wish we lived in the same neighborhood!
Yeah, I don’t know of any older skaters or bike riders on my neighborhood. So it’s fun to connect with you guys in this virtual one 👊
Nice kick flip bro
Thanks!
Hi Matt, I remember getting some Vans Cabellero's around about 1990, I was working at KFC and let a co-worker borrow them. Obviously I never seen them again
Wow! That’s a bummer!
Where do we get The Nostalgic Neighborhood sticker that was on your nose?
I cut that out with my Cricut machine. I’m still trying to figure out how to do stickers. For obvious reasons, I want to keep my address private, but I don’t know if I could sell enough to justify a PO Box for a return address, but I hope to get some stuff available soon.
i probably wouldn't say they're completely useless. but squats and calisthenics would prob help more than anything else. when you were young and skating you probably didn't realize you were doing hundreds of squats a day trying tricks over and over again
Good point! 🙌
Consider wearing your bike helmet when practicing. Richard
Thank you Richard. 🙌
Trying to get my McTwist back. 😐
Haha! I’m not sure these are gonna help with that 🤣
Good job , your balance is to much on back foot. I have been skating since 1982 .
Thanks for the input 🙏
Ray Barbee could help you
I used to watch his part in Public Domain over and over 🤯
Compared to when you were a kid. You are heavier and have to jump up with more weight. Going to take practice and stronger legs
yeah was gonna say for us all. at 13 years old you are like 100-125lbs. now at 50 we are like 200lbs more or less.
Good point, and yeah, that weight coming down hard hurts more when you fall too 🤣
Your muscles are also far bigger and developed.@@BackyardAquatics-o2m
They were a gimmick 16 years ago and they are a gimmick today.... They promote learning or attempting to learn Ollie's before ever remotely understanding the principle of riding the skateboard or understanding basic principle of skateboarding creating the type of slower than I walk skateboarding that is today...😮😮😮...
That’s a fair concern that we address that towards the end of the video. When I was kid, we got the basics down by using a crack in the sidewalk. Of course, we didn’t say in the crack forever, and I don’t think that that crack hindered my understanding of what was happening or made me into a super slow skater. (If I’m slow now, it’s because I’m old, overweight, and out of practice.) These are similar, but better than a crack. But you certainly shouldn’t use them too long before moving to the next step when learning…
