- Episode 8 • Starting on the Rear Quarter Panels
In this video, we continue fabrication on Denny's 69 Chevrolet Corvair. Scott starts making the rear quarter panels. This Chevy will be getting some massive rear tires, so we have to widen the body to get them to fit. This car will be getting a brand new Nelson Racing twin-turbo LS V8 and it'll be moved up front. This car will sit on a custom Roadster Shop chassis with massive 6-piston Brembo brakes. It'll also be getting tons of metal fabrication, custom interior, custom wheels, and so much more. Make sure to follow this build closely, it'll be a wild one!

And thats amazing, because he takes the time to make sure that you understand what he's saying so that you can kind of picture what the end product will be, and the product is better then the picture he put in ur mind, i luv this coz it feels relaxing to watch, if yall(the camera man) feel like he is being redundant when he is explaining what he is making, pls dont cut him off when he(Scott) does that Mr"CameraMan"/Mr"editor". We'll try to have one teed up! Definitely want to make sure any last minute changes get accurately represented though, so need to wait for the process to play out...
I’m really interested in seeing how you blend that wheel arch into the fender and making the intersections seamless. I’ve always wanted to see how two panels welded together look like they were stamped that way. Very exciting.
We'll try to show the metal finishing processing after the panel is welded up. The real old school guys use guide coat, metal files, and a bullseye pick with a little hammer/dolly work. We typically use all of those, but swap out the metal files for abrasives. Getting the weld right is really important as well, because you want to make sure you put as little heat into the panels as possible to avoid warping them. A bit nerve wracking after spending so much time getting the shape of the panel just right.

If u use flat dies in the bead roller on top and bottom and go back and forth with pressure applied you can easily stretch that lip around. Or hammer form it.

I know they’ve used the bread roller like that in stuff like flanges in the past. And it’s probably Scott’s favorite tool… will have to ask why he didn’t use it here.
As a past bodyman, I would have suggested starting with a new Camaro quarter panel and customizing it.... How ever new quarters are too thin....

I'm as novice as you can get and apart from the skills you're applying right here on my screen .You know this is school for one me and I most definitely appreciate how you explained your method cause one could almost see it before the panel was done. What grammatical errors 🤬
Everyone's got to start somewhere, and if you're interested in this stuff (metal shaping & fabrication), there's a great community for it in the car world. Don't be afraid to get started, the best guys won't be judgemental of your work but will help you get better.

You should shorten the wheelbase to make a 2 seater coupe. The wheel well should be just behind the door.
It’s going to be a two seater. We need the space in the back for the air ducts for the cooling system.

What gauge of steel do you use for most of your panels?
19 gauge
16 if it's something that needs to be more structural.
Make a mold of it before you put it back on!

@@tawildt Just joking around with you on the helmet. A buck is a great idea, and something we would have used if the design weren't so heavily based on the existing fenders.
