Thats a really nice radio George. Another great trouble shooting video. Finally able to watch videos after being rushed to emergency 10 days ago and in ICU most of that time. Have Atrial Fibrilation and a Sepsis blood infection. Just got home 2 days ago under nurses care and still taking all kind of meds to get rid of the infection and get my heart under control.
I really hope you are on the mend Larry now. Not a nice thing to have happen. Hopefully you will pull right through with no long term effects. The radio is one of my favourites and its really well made with a logical layout.
Some nice FLIR action there! The AF series transformers are a rare beast... Good to have you back on the tube George. You go careful with those resispacitors...
them campaciductors are real beasts to find, especially with the burning on the bottom. AF series Transformers are quite common, they have gone from being transistors to lumps of rubbish! A real transformation.
Yes, hopefully I can show the detail of it with the transistors it has in it. Unfortunately they are getting unreliable so it may well be parts swapping.
Hey George. Cleaning the band switch and replacing dead E caps works wonders for sure. Nice to see a repair video from you again, looking forward to more. :)
Good to see you back at the bench George. I enjoyed the video and there's some useful learning for me. I have a Sovereign 11 and a Sovereign RP1 with cassette, both of which need TLC. It was sad to hear that the BBC intends to be completely online for radio and TV in the next ten years.
Many Thanks Bob! Hacker were good like that, making things fairly straightforward. Later sets show that the company was trying to cheap out but the 1960's and 70's sets were well built.
That’s a quality radio. In my opinion the best sounding Hacker there is and it’s the early version as well. Hopefully the aerial is okay. Great tutorial. I was surprised that the AF117 was still alive but some seem to resist shorts for some reason. I look forward to the rest of the series. Cheers Graham
Indeed, between this and the sov 2 they are possibly the best sounding portables. I don't count the sp80 as it is a completely different beast , the only thing coming near is the Hunter.
Well done that man nice to see you streaming again . I hope you had a good weekend at the vintage rally. The soveriegn mk1 is my favorite of all the Hackers .God bless xx
Many Thanks Rob. Yes, the weekend was fun and I have still yet to empty everything from the car! I do like the Sov 1 and the Sov 2 from the Hacker range. A quality build that has a speaker and cabinet that give great sound.
Hi George. Everyone seems to like these Hackers. Radiocruncher eats them for breakfast (allegedly) but I’ve never seen one for sale over here. Since we didn’t get FM here until late 70’s /early 80’s there wasn’t a market for an FM receiver in the 60s. Anyway, they look like a well-built and quite attractive radio. Looking forward to the next part!
Hackers were a much nicer build quality than a lot of other stuff on the market at the time. Officially the UK was late to the FM party too but the BBC were running trials from the 1950's on VHF FM.
Good stuff , wonder if that faint radio 4 was them resistor transistor capacitors or whatever they are called starting to reform. Nice fault finding and great thermal camera views Looking forward to seeing the next one Best regards Shaun
Hi George, nice to see you back on UA-cam again, as an old timer (80) I have been using Servisol for more than 50 Years now, what is the make of the one you use? as for Deoxit I think it overpriced. Regards from Ray the old sod from North Wales.
Hi Ray. To be honest I generally use whatever is cheapest on Amazon or eBay at the time. I have been a long term servisol user but the rising prices just put me off a bit. Another one I have been using is Kontakt 60, A belgian companys product which was very good. I will not pay the silly price of Deoxit as I really don't think that it is much better than anything else, it just has good hype and the perception that it must be good because its expensive.
Super fast George :-D No naughty thoughts. Another hacker alive again, well done george :-D That paper clip looked like death :-( Didn't the previous owner make a dam mess!.:-( My direction for checking would be the end of the i.f strips with a receiver set to 455-470k and 10.7 smegs. I like using receivers for sniffing the i.f products without actually upsetting anything. But i'm a bodger and i never found a need for a r.f probe.... yet lol. Ill shut my face now lol.
Indeed, the innards around that volume pot left a lot to be desired. I know not everyone is well practiced at soldering but randomly melting wires really does look bad. They hadn't done too bad a job with the af127's so it baffles me a bit. as for IF testing, I have a special little box for that, you will see it in the next video.
@@GeorgeChristofi Perhaps the af127 soldering was done by a different bloke. Cheap crappy solder and lack of wire/terminal tinning makes a right mess. Keep tinkering George, good to bring stuff back to life :-D
Great Stuff George Lovely Radio Sound Superb Dont Dilly Daly George Get Rid Of Them and Would Be Nice To See Some Zap Action On Those Wiskery Rascals Comeing Along Nicely George Thanks For Uploading Regards mike.
To zap or not to zap... replacing them with modern transistors works very well and is less problematic than recycled Mullards. I will show the proper way to zap them if I do go down that route.
Not very. When I get to the amp board I will try and test it before and after to see if it still meets spec as is. I don't think so but it isn't dead as such, still throws out some sound.

Good common sense stuff George, enjoyed that!!
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice looking radio looking forward to seeing the FM part
Its not the prettiest girl but she has potential once you get your fingers inside.

I do plan to do more but that life stuff sometimes gets in the way.

Nice old radio. I really like the modular construction. Much easier to troubleshoot! Good to see you back!👍👍

Excellent video George Nice to see you at the bench its always my first port of call to check the audio amplifier
I will try and do more and quicker. Life and all that!
@@GeorgeChristofi has the smell of those vapes gone from the bench yet ?
Hiya George heard about your RTA hope you O.K. sending prayers and best wishes xx
Everyone is fine, it's just a bit of metal that died. Will still be doing the videos

it was down to those dodgy Daly caps Shaun. We shall see what is going on with the FM side soon.
Very very faint Radio 4, a blessing in disguise.
it could have been worse... Radio 1.

One big advantage of Hackers George, is their not Roberts. Good job.
Very much so Uncle Simon. Not Roberts
LOL
