      So crypto Dad i hope you can forward my request to them it they can upgrade space from 1Mb to 2Mb or 3Mb this more than enough space for any one who to add more coin or token more than 10 coins or tokens.

    Does ledger know your private keys or seed phrases ?

    • @CryptoDad
      @CryptoDad  2 місяці тому

      No, they do not. The private key is generated randomly & locally on your device. And then your seed phrase is only presented on your device screen. You should write it down and keep it hidden. Don't ever show your seed phrase to anyone, even if they claim to be from ledger. Ledger will never ask you to give them the 24 word backup phrase. If you choose to use the Ledger recover service, even then, no one at Ledger will know what your seed phrase is. The private key is broken into three pieces and encrypted. The only person that can restore it is you, by biometric verification.

      Yes, I just dropped it on top of my Apple phone charger and it started charging. Unfortunately, I have a stand and the magnet will hold my phone up, but it won't hold the STAX. I guess the magnet isn't powerful enough. But when it's flat on the table, I can put the STAX on top and it starts charging. Of course, you still need the cable to connect to Ledger live if you're using a computer. But if you're using a phone, you can use the Bluetooth and Just throw the cable away!

    • @CryptoDad

      It probably would have, but with the swap fees, it might have not been a huge advantage. Blockchain fees are just a fact of life. Also, I was recording this video in the late afternoon during a time of high activity and I was sending an unusually small amount. percentage-wise fees are much more reasonable when sending larger amounts.

      Well, you could set up your STAX from scratch with empty wallets and then connect your other device and get into your passphrase configuration. From there, you can transfer everything over. Or you could restore the STAX using your existing 24 word seed phrase from your current ledger device and simply enter your passphrase. Just like you do on your current device.

However, with a little practice, you can learn to transfer your crypto back and forth so that you can easily cash out at exchanges like Coinbase or Crypto .com.

    Since you can plug a USB-C into this, just curious what happens if you plug a USB-C keyboard into it? Most people don't know this but phones can have keyboards and mouse hooked up to them. Smart TV's with USB ports can also have a keyboard (havent tried mouse), but really curious if you can hook a keyboard up to this because if so I would be nervous of something called "Bad USB".

    • @CryptoDad
      @CryptoDad  4 місяці тому

      Yeah, I don’t know how much functionality you would get by plugging a peripheral into this port. However, I did notice that in order to connect it to my computer I had to connect it directly to one of the USB ports on my desktop. I tried connecting it to one of my, peripheral mousepad hubs and it wasn’t recognized

    • @scriptles
      @scriptles 4 місяці тому +1

      @@CryptoDad Wow, thanks for the reply.
      My Trezor I have will be picky about even what cables I plug into it. Like not all USB cables are equal you know.
      The reason I brought this up. I am not sure if you have ever heard of "O.MG cables" which are USB cables that have a tiny computer embedded right into them. It's so small actually they are indistinguishable between regular cables. And this is where the whole "BAD USB" thing comes in. A hacker could theoretically slip you one of those cables and if you could send keystrokes actually to the device these bad usb devices can send thousands of keystrokes in a single second meaning an attacker would be able to "go thru the motions" as if they had your unlocked device in their actual hands. Which means plugging it in and unlocking the device could instantly drain your wallet.
      That is however, if you could actually plug in a keyboard to the device. It's really hard to tell what will, and will not, be vulnerable to this because a lot of devices use a generic chip for the USB which means often times devices will support things that they were not even designed to do.
      Anyways, I am sure that Ledger are no fools and that they designed a reasonable product with good security as they have in the past. It was just a curious thought of mine because my mind loves to be paranoid about security. Anyways stay safe and keep putting out videos like you have and I will keep watching them. Long time fan of yours. Stay safe and enjoy your Stax!

      Totally agree with you there. As it stands, I would not be able to migrate all of the apps. I’m currently using on my ex over to the new STAX. Of course, there are a lot of apps that I have on the X that I haven’t used in quite a while and should’ve been wiped off a while back, but that still is no excuse for having such a high-end device with basically half the storage of their previous flagship hardware device.

      @CryptoDad ya that's for sure a bummer. It's kind of crazy how they design them with magnets so they can be "stacked" (stax) lol considering how expensive they are. How many do they expect people to buy at over $200 a pop?? As soon they announced the stax and said it was designed by a former iPhone designer I knew the thing was gonna be expensive lol.

    Ledger Support stated ladt year that "technically speaking it is and always has been possible to write firmware that facilitates key extraction. You have always trusted Ledger not to deploy such firmware whether you knew it or not". Stay away.

    • @CryptoDad
      @CryptoDad  3 місяці тому +1

      First of all, this statement was made by someone in tech support, probably sitting behind a computer screen in a cubicle reading from a script all day. This was not an official ledger statement. Second, even if they could doesn't mean they do. There is no documented proof that Ledger is extracting people's seed phrases from the device. No documented snippet of code from a ledger insider, a black-hat hacker, or a white-hat hacker or a government whistleblower. There is no documented case of anyone getting their crypto wallet drained mysteriously and seeing the public blockchain transfer end up in Ledgers coffers. Not to mention that this device is rigorously tested and certified by 3rd party standards organizations. It's also regularly tested for vulnerabilities by white hackers. This whole idea that Ledger is stealing people's crypto is pure fantasy. There is no factual basis behind this besides your claim that it's possible.

      True but you have to admit the way they went about this was extremely poor
      People rightfully got upset that a certain type of functionality they didn't sign up for was has now been enabled, even if it technically requires someone to opt into the service
      Microsoft are now getting bad publicity because of a Windows 11 feature they will bring out that will take snapshots of your screen every 3 seconds so you can trace back to a point in time for everything you did. They have declared its OK because everything is encrypted bla bla bla.
      People are rightfully angry because they never signed up to this crap when they purchased Windows but here we are
      It's really the same situation with ledger, people didn't sign up for seed extraction services
      No one should be making an apology for ledger over this, they should be scolded for how they have implemented this into devices of people who didn't want this
      They could have said it's available on the Stax only and in Nanos in say 5 years time or something, not enable it on devices of people who don't want it and never asked for it

    After telling Coinbase the wallet address to send the crypto too and completing that transaction do you have to generate a new wallet address with the ledger to send more from Coinbase to ledger or can you just tell Coinbase to send more to the same address? If so, 24:16 Does Coinbase remember the address that you last sent to ?

    • @CryptoDad
      @CryptoDad  2 місяці тому +1

      You can continue to send to the same address over and over again if you want to. I believe that you need to whitelist it in Coinbase if you want it saved. However, if you have it saved in a text file somewhere and paste it in the Coinbase, Coinbase will recognize it and confirm that you used it before. However, once you have received Bitcoin into a wallet, the next time you do a "receive", it will generate a completely new and fresh receiving address. This is just how Bitcoin wallets work to preserve your privacy. You can always resend to previous addresses and the Bitcoin will still arrive in the wallet.

    I have been searching for the advantage of moving from the nano x to the stax and cannot find one worth the risk of changing from something I trust, what's with all the updates after booting? didn't they get it right from the git? or are you linking to a second or third source as a registration / tracking feature?

    • @CryptoDad
      @CryptoDad  3 місяці тому

      As far as its functionality goes of signing transactions and managing crypto, it. doesn't have any ground breaking advantages over the Ledger Nano X. However, as far as I'm concerned, as a day-to-day crypto user, the interface is vastly improved. Not only do I use my wallet on a daily basis, but I also do tech support for people. And when I'm walking people through managing the ledger Nano X, it is very difficult to get them to do something as simple as turning off the lock screen. For me, the interface is one of the most important features of a crypto wallet. It may not be as important to you. And yes, updates are a fact of life. If you recall, it took them over a year past their estimated ship date to get this thing in people's hands. So I'm sure they were trying to eliminate as much delay as possible. Therefore, they shiped the physical device while they were still putting the finishing touches on the OS. I understand that. Updates will always be a fact of life.

      No, the STAX does not show any of your balances. That's what ledger live is for. STAX manages the private key and displays transactional data when you're signing transactions. But you do not see your balances on the STAX device.

    i presume there’s a night view function : ) and what! no color screen for ones amazing technicolor ntf’s - i guess they have to hold back for future ‘new’ ‘improved’ iterations ; )

      Yeah, that's a little bit disappointing, but the e-ink technology has other charms as well. even though it doesn't do color. For example, that lock screen seems to just hang there forever even after the device shuts down. I think that's cool, but it may go away after the battery drains completely.

      @@CryptoDad It won't go out when battery drains completely, e-ink does not need energy to maintain its current state, that why it can be used for cool lock screens 👍

    Folks still using ledger knowing they have a back door to the hard wallet?

    • @stultuses
      @stultuses 3 місяці тому +1

      It's not a back door, stop the FUD
      It's an opt in service with clear boundaries on wallet restoration parameters that you have to agree to
      I do agree ledger really f**cked up in how they announced the service, effectively adding functionality to people's existing devices after they had purchased it, that enabled functionality many didn't want. This was extremely bad. Very very bad.
      They should have created a new device that has that feature and left everyone else's devices as they were.
      Now they have no device that technically cannot have its seed phrase backed up elsewhere, something a lot of people want and prefer
      They could have even given people a cheap trade in to a device that supported the seed restoration functionality and left existing devices alone but instead they were extremely arrogant and just sprung it on people and made a complete PR schemozle of the situation
      I know for certain they have lost a lot of business because other solutions have sky-rocketed in sales now
      Ledger makes good hardware but it is an arrogant company at times. They were arrogant in how they handled the data breach (which didn't affect their hardware) and they are arrogant in dismissing people's upset and concerns that their devices nowvhave the potential to lift their seed phrase off the device, something they never dreamed of could happen when they bought their devices before this service was announced
      I do understand why they see the need to market seed restoration and seed custody but the way they went about it totally sucked and they deserve to lose sales because of their arrogance
