This is a Motormouth couple car review of the Audi Q5 luxury compact SUV. The Audi Q5 is the best selling luxury SUV in Canada in the compact class. Great review and content. Love what you both put together as a team. Thank you and keep it coming. As I write this comment in June 2024, I decided to get the Q5 in Daytona Pearl s-line with black optics package over the x3 and glc. I’m based in Switzerland and the lease on the Q5 monthly was a good 20-25% cheaper than other rivals. After all the discounts, it worked out to be 68K CHF with all the bells and whistles.
Thank you for the great review. It helped me choose. I totally agree with you. I’m at the end of my GLC300 lease and I just switched to a 2021 Q5 Progressiv with black S-line trim (exact same model and color than in the review). Driving dynamic , seats and better technology convinced me. Price of Audi is much more competitive too. I was due for a change after 2 back to back Mercedes.
I just got the Q5 so I don’t have the long term experience but I love it so far. Before that I had a GLC300 for 4 years and a GLK350 for 4 years too. I was a bit disappointed by the Mercedes ride quality. It’s nice at the beginning but both cars had back shock issues after only a few months. They replaced them under warranty but a few months later the shocks were noisy and clunky again. It drove me nuts. I also had the famous squeeling brake on the GLC. This was a frequently reported issue. I also hated the Pirelli Scorpio Verde Run Flat tires. These tires were very hard and affected the ride quality so much. I was liking my winter tire better so you can imagine... These tires are also expensive and very hard to find. I had a flat last summer during my vacation and I had to make a lot of phone calls to realize that no one (not even 4 different Mercedes dealers) had them in stock. I had to order one and wait 2 days for the tire to come. Fortunately, I was able to buy a used non runflat similar tire in the meantime so I didn’t completely ruin my vacations. Never again run flat tire. Audi also offers real leather seats standard. Mercedes comes with leatherette. I had to replace the bottom of the driver seat on my GLK (600$) because it wear down after a few years. So, this is my experience with Mercedes. Overall OK but not great.

Thanks for this great review! I've been waiting for so long for you to review the new Q5! I love my 2019 Navarra blue Technik Q5. I took the Technik trim mostly for the heated back seats for my daughter + a good deal on it! You can easily go lower than 8l/100km on the highway during the summer without driving like Miss Daisy... The only thing that I miss is the look of the SQ5 with the Air suspension who brings your SUV lower to the ground= sportier look! My neighbor owns one with the 21'' wheels and side to side, his looks definitely better...

Always love your reviews. I debated back and forth between the 2021 Audi Q5 and 2021 Lexus NX300. After much thought I ended up purchasing the NX300 as I would not be able to afford the maintenance upkeep with the Q5. Especially after the warranty expires.

YES YES I totally agree with Audi keeping the MMI wheel + a touch screen. They put so much time into perfecting the sound and ergonomics of it but they got rid of it too quickly.

Another great review. Q5 is the best all around value. Not class leading in any category, but does everything well. Still prefer the X3 and GLC based on preference. Thoughts on the Volvo XC60?

Good review. I actually watch car reviews on vehicles I plan to buy second hand every seven years. I currently have Q5 2013 and will consider this 2021 model in 2028. Where I live cars don't get driven long distances. I can find 7 year old vehicles with barely 60,000 km which is way before the breakdown point of this model at 79% depreciation (includes import tax)

I have an Acura RDX A-SPEC and just recently drove a Q5 (rental car) while away working in Quebec. I was blown away. I would swap my RDX in a heartbeat, if I could.

Is there any way to remove the headrests in the rear seats to improve visibility out the back? BMW has small back seat headrests so it’s easy to see out.

Another great video, really enjoyed this one. I do have the Q5 on my future vehicle list. I don’t often see this on any reviews, but do you test and rate the headlights ability to light up the road. In the past, we’ve purchased 2 vehicles that had poor headlights, but you never get to test headlights on a afternoon test drive. 👍🇨🇦
Make sure to do a test drive at night or ask to keep the car overnight
Not only the B&O sound system also the ambient lighting with RGB

Love your videos. Does any have issues with turbo lag? I just did a test drive in a 2023 Q5 Premium Plus and noticed quite a bad delay between hitting the accelerator and really moving. It’s so slow to respond. Definite initial movement but slow. Does pick up eventually. Is this normal? I so wanted to like this and would have bought it otherwise.

I'm a big Motormouth fan (the format of your UA-cam vlogs is excellent) and whilst I'm not on actually in the market for a Q5 (I'm UK based & looking for something smaller than the Q5 like Audi's forthcoming 2021 Audi Q3 45 TFSI e hybrid which I hope you review later this year). I'm hoping many of the Q5's genetics will be carried over to the Q3, particularly the ergonomics and the drivers digital display which I think is best in class. I can well imagine the Q5 being ideal for Canadian roads whereas the new hybrid Q3 will I hope tick lots of other boxes for us as a family & our narrower UK country roads. Audi 😍 - I considered a gently used SQ5 when I traded my A5 (which I wish I would have kept - it had a manual transmission), but I went with a new, fully loaded A3 Technik. Still prefer cars to SUVs. Great video, as always. 👍

I hope its better than my 18 Technik sline. Very hard ride, if in normal drive massive turbo lag, nowhere to put a phone or incidentals. Lots of electrical issues and a pointless track pad. Mine is same colour and does look great though. I drive my wife's Crosstrek mainly now. Good show.
Great review! I think the Q5 along with all other Audi’s just look so sharp and always seem to stand out on the road. I hardly ever notice a BMW anything but always break my neck trying to stop and look at an Audi 😂

I think stretching for the technik package to get the sound system and ambient lighting is worth it
The Technik trim offers good value. You even get the Matrix LED headlights which look really cool on that trim.
Will we see the sportback version in the US?
I have a Q5, and one thing that I do not like is the cup holders (front & rear). One cannot put 2 large cups side-by-side due to them hitting each other. The rear is also limited to a very small sized drink (in the armrest). Also, they need to move the liftgate button from the door panel to the instrument panel where the light buttons are. Where it is now is very cumbersome and placed low on the door panel.
I traded from a 2018 Q5 to the 2022 sline..I've noticed a difference in sound if that makes sense . Is it the motor or the exhaust ? Any ideas?? I'm guessing the motor is same as before ? It says TFsi Quattro.. on my papers but not on my car tail gate area . Odd

I was waiting for you guys to review this one, as I’ve been in market for the past month. On my shortlist was this Q5, the RDX A-spec and the XT4 sport ... I took delivery of the Q5 a few days ago. Quietest cabin of the 3 and smoothest power delivery by far. Nimble road manners while achieving a robust “tank like” build quality. One important feature for us Canadians on the Q5 is the inclusion of the very heavy rubber winter floor and cargo mats. Perfectly fitted and designed, these were going to cost me an additional $700 for the Acura or the Caddy! Zack’s summary is spot on; best all-rounder in the class. I would be concerned about VW Group reliability and VW Canada's willingness to stand by their products. A VW issued recall on our current GTI was botched causing a roadside breakdown. VW Canada refused to correct the problem so I had to pay for the fix. Would I be treated any better if I bought an Audi?

Took in my VW Tiguan for an oil change (275,000km) came out with a 2018 Q5. I'll miss my baby but time for change.
Interesting to see your video review. I do not know if Canada Audi vehicles are made. Canada, Belgium or Mexico? I bring this up as the honeycomb grill on my 2021 Q5 is a hybrid model here in California. Mine was made in Mexico. In California the 2021 Q5 has the regular grill with horizontal and vertical slants. In America, the hybrid has Federal and CA tax incentives of $6714 and $1350 paying for the upgrade to hybrid EV model. I have used only 7 gallons of gas in 58 days of driving. The EV mileage is around 26 miles which is better than the EPA rating of 20. I enjoyed the short review. I had a 2013 Q5 with 60k miles before upgrading. I wanted the blind spot monitoring and the pretense cross for cross traffic when backing out of a parking space. Saved me once already.

Your review points mimicid exactly what I thought through my buying process. I recently researched and test drove all the players in that midsize SUV segment and ended up purchasing a 2021 Q5. I read the reviews about the X3 and thought that was going to be the car that won me over but I was disappointed with it. Seating was uncomfortable for me and I actually found the drive to be a touch harsh rather than dynamic. The nail in the BMW coffin was seeing all the current recalls on the new model. There are too many recalls to overlook, something is going on with their production.
The Audi Q5 isn’t perfect and I can point out things that annoy me but it was the goldilocks vehicle for our needs.....everything seemed just right.
Andrea said she didn’t care about the upgraded stereo but for the audiophiles out there. The Bang and Olufsen upgrade for the Q5 is the best upgradable stereo in this particular segment. Much better than the X3’s Harman Kardon and a slight edge over GLC’s Burmester.
Plus the Quantum grey colour that comes standard is so 🔥

Great review. I believe the 2021 Q5 45 model comes with a 12V mild hybrid engine setup giving it 261hp which is a boost over the 2020 model which had 248hp.
Yes it does but it doesn't add any power as the hybrid battery is not connected to the drivetrain. It is used to power accessories, particularly the stop-start and has a integrated alternator-starter motor as well as a standard starter motor. The standard one is only used if engine temperature is below 113°F, the other one restarts the engine via the alternator belt. This can lead to premature wear and need for replacement of that belt. A daft complication IMHO, adding complexity and therefore potential problems! Yes, I have one, 45 TFSI. Love it, brilliant car.
Great review Andrea and Zak! As a Q5 Technik trim owner with the S-line package, there are more differences between the Progressive and Technik trims beyond the Bang & Olufsen sound system, the Technik also comes with top view camera, standard heated rear seats, privacy blinds for the rear doors, LED matrix headlights and taillights, headlight washers, heated and cooled cup holders and multi-colour ambient lighting. Audi has done a good job of improving the content in the most recent model year by making the 12.3" display standard along with some of the safety features and power rear tailgate across all trims. The Progressive trim is the sweet spot for the 2021 MY.

I feel the need to point out that the Porsche Macan actually uses the old MLB platform. The current generation Q5 uses the newer MLB evo platform. 🙂
Don't be fooled today's new platforms are merely updates of proven historic ones. Macan 2 suspension was upgraded too with Aluminum components to reduce weight - it has a different feel with even better driving dynamics
