Donna was kept from the bad press by people she trusted. They meant well, as they thought no one would believe that Donna Summer was homophobic because it was so absurd. Donna Summer was shocked and saddened when she volunteered to perform at an AIDS benefit and they said, we don't want her. I worked with Donna on three projects around the time, and when I saw her in tears on the news announcing the lawsuit, I felt terrible. It was really difficult to see her cry. The next day, I called her house, but she was out with her business people and attorneys, but I spoke to Mimi, her eldest daughter, and Mimi said they were all very upset about it, and it was an emotional thing for Donna. I told Mimi just to tell her that I called, and that I wanted her to know that she is very much loved.
The last time Donna saw her dear friend Paul Jabara (who wrote Last Dance, the Main Event, It's Raining Men, No More Tears- Enough is Enough, and so much more) before he died from AIDS complications, I saw her immediately afterward. She walked in and kissed me on the lips (Like a Mom would do, but it surprised me) and gave me a big hug. I then asked her assistant, "What's wrong? I can tell there is something wrong" and that's when I was told they had just come from Paul Jabara's house and Donna went into his bedroom, shut the door, and spent a couple of hours alone with him. She loved him like a brother and they had spent a lot of time together in the good old days at Casablanca. She also said that her favorite song to sing was Last Dance because when she sang it she felt he was near to her. Donna told me that she lost a lot of friends to AIDS, the most beautiful men you could know - so beautiful inside and out, truly gorgeous men. I know she sang at the funeral for a friend whose brother had died from AIDS complications.
I have also been to her church and knew her pastor and his wife, and everyone who worked there were really nice people. I had to go there on an errand for business and I was dressed a little wild that day (and with my long hair, which Donna loved) when I walked into the pastor's office, but no one even blinked. Just the kindness that one should be able to expect from people who are truly Christian as Jesus taught-- do not judge the soul of anyone, and the command to love ALL of your neighbors and even your enemies. Too many pastors preach hate and some even are for the death penalty for gay people. Donna's church people were nothing like that- quite the opposite, and her pastor had been criticized by those big-name TV preacher grifters, fearmongers, and hate provocateurs.
Donna has also had a gay attorney for practically her entire career and he likely still is an attorney for her estate. I sat next to him at a TV show taping and he was with a younger boyfriend.
Donna didn't care if you were straight, gay, Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, green, purple, green or chartreuse. She loved everyone, but she especially liked people who were talented, and people who could make her laugh. She was hilarious herself.

Just left a video where Donna’s supposedly anti LGBT stance was mentioned in the comments section. I remember her taking out time on national television to put an end to this rumor. I was surprised to hear she had been accused but proud of her for standing up and defending her self. I got the privilege of seeing her perform late in her comeback career. She was kind loving and accepted everyone. I am glad this video is on here so maybe people well look for the truth. She was the Queen of Disco and I’ll always remember her for this.

I was in my early 20's when 'Another Place And Time' was released. There were a few club DJ's who refused to play the singles, or any of Donna's music, and it was then that I first heard about the rumours. Sadly, this followed her the rest of her life. Anyone who ever defended the rumour, I always asked, "Show me a video, let me hear an audio tape, show me a review in print with the quotes she was attributed to." No one can ever offer up proof. It's always, "I heard she said, my friend said she said..." No proof. Donna is my number one diva, always was, always will be.

Sadly, we have the entire Donna Summer timeline. Outside of this highly questionable speculation of a conversation taken out of context, where have you seen Donna speak about anyone or anything in a negative manner. She almost trips over herself trying to stay eternally positive. If she’s guilty of anything, it was a joke made on stage that if you knew the context of, wouldn’t have caused as much controversy. Look at her life, it speaks volumes against negativity of this period.

I have been accused of "saying things", that I've never said, and no matter what you try to do to defend yourself, people have deaf ears. Guilty until proven innocent. It sucks, and I could totally relate to what Donna was saying. I was DJ-ing in the clubs when Donna was just getting started, and I played all of her tunes. When Billboard Magazine, (which I was a reporter for), voted Gloria Gaynor the Queen of Disco in 1979, I almost crapped a brick. I thought, is Billboard out of their minds? Donna Summer was, the quintessential Queen of Disco. I was so sad when she passed. Such a talented lady with a good soul.

Also the fact that she sued the magazine that started to spread that rumor and they settled and paid her out of court for lots of money which she donated to HIV prevention and research?

I was first introduced to her music in 1976. I fell instantly in love with her sound. Her voice, the music. The energy of it. It was like nothing I'd heard before. Last Dance blew my sox off. And then, On the Radio & Yesterday. I realized she wasn't like other Disco Queens. However, some of them were amazing! The ones who were really in it. Like Champaign-King. She was probably my first foray into the genre. Gloria Gaynor was another one who didn't really make it out ot the Disco crash. The day Disco died was TRAGIC for me. I loved the genere. I couldn't figure out why anyone would want to kill it. But Donna made it out & still kept her sound. Because she was bigger than Disco! She had music by the balls & she wasn't letting it go either. So when the whole backlash came I was devastated first of all because I was newly "in the life." Donna was everything to us. So when the story came out we were all in shock. Because it was the reporting on that initial story that was so brutal. The more we heard, the worse the story got. I have to say that I never believed it & defended her, like it would have done any good. There were many of us who did. Gay men. We knew they were trying to take her down for being a Christian, which I was also. So life was very strange for someone like me at that time. I was called "a conundrum" a lot. I'm sure she was too. But I think that in the end we loved her more because she didn't give in & give them what they wanted. .They wanted her pound of flesh & she wasn' tgoing to give it to them & she ultimately didn't & had an even deeper relationship with the gay community as a result. She was a force & that is for sure! 😊💞🙏💞😊

To me, that seems like Donna ended up winning some dollar amount. Two quick things.........through my research, I believe I narrowed down the date of the original "Village Voice" article (that started this whole thing) to June 22, 1983. Here are a few links to some eye witnesses that were at a few concerts.......www.donna-tribute.com/articles/99/wrongly.html and www.gayinthe80s.com/2012/06/25/1983-donna-summer-homophobe/image-2/. @@foryourviewingpleasure966 - Thank you for the detailed comment above. I am a historian, and have one piece of the puzzle here. I have a copy here of an article in The Village Voice dated July 5, 1983, titled "Donna Summer After the Ball." Writer was Jim Feldman. This was his article opener, verbatim: "Donna Summer made an incredibly rude, gratuitous, and lame antigay crack during her show at Resorts International in Atlantic City June 20 (1983)--you know, "Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve." Then she added, "But I love you anyway." Well, thanks loads, Donna. I suppose her born-again status is responsible for her sanctimony, but her mean-spirited homophobia was particularly inappropriate because without us, Donna Summer wouldn't be playing anything in Atlantic City but the slots." Wow. There is a second article, I believe from the Orlando Sentinel, that talks of a similar incident at a Florida concert. (I had cut that one out, too, but cannot find it at the moment.) Then the rumor gained momentum, and at some point (not sure of the date) the notorious New York Magazine article was published, for which she sued for libel. People began dying of AIDS (then called GRID) in 1981; it made the cover of Newsweek in the Summer of 1984. So Donna's claim that she didn't know what it was or that it killed people is more plausible if she said it before 1984. I personally saw people throwing eggs at marchers in the Gay Pride Parade in New York City from the steps of St. Patrick's Cathedral, egged on by notorious homophobe Cardinal O'Connor. That was the zeitgeist of New York City at the time, with people attending daily funerals. That was the world writer Jim Feldman circled in, which may explain - but not justify - why he got so ticked off by a poor joke that she said on stage during her concert. It's all history now, including her.

I may have to contact my local library and go through their microfilms. I live in Los Angeles.....so there should be copies, especially The Village Voice. It seems as though the Village Voice article started the whole thing in July of 83. Then it seems that the Florida incident (people staying after the concert) happened later on that year around Nov of 83. Then maybe the Orlando Sentinel article right after that. Donna addresses the Florida incident (without mentioning it was in Florida) during the interview I have posted with Jacobs Stege. Then the New York magazine lawsuit came in Oct of 1991 after they printed that story. @@foryourviewingpleasure966 - Also, it's very likely Donna did not like gays, as Moroder said, during a certain time period, right around her born-again conversion. She certainly would not have been thrilled with them when they began banning her records, tossing her collections, etc. Yet she eventually came around, including taking part in some fundraisers for gay causes. If Donna hated gays later in life, there is no way she would have done the duet with Prince Poppycock on American Idol (which you can see on youtube). I believe Moroder is referring to a very narrow period of her life, likely 1983 to 1993 or so.

It's interesting that she does talk about "something" going down after the concert and "we said things back and forth to each other". Never saw that clip before. I personally think in the heat of the back and forth she did say it. And regretted it either sincerely or for financial/career reasons. I don't buy the whole thing about not knowing AIDS could kill people etc. By the time it was actually called AIDS everybody knew it could be deadly. If the incident had happened in this era someone would have recorded it all on thier cellphone that's for sure.

Don't be too hard on the older generations, with a whole different conception about the homosexuality. Some may learn to embrace it today but not all of them could cope with it.

Well, she may have said it, she may not have said it but the fact is I'm as gay as can be and I still Ave respect for DS. She was my first icon out if al them as I was born as the fall from the rise of disco began. Ppl have to realize this was well over 40 years ago and you didnt rub your sex life under everyone's noses, there's a time and place. UT's every but as disrespectful for the heteros to throw that in everyones face too. She was a religious woman and that was just the belief that homosexual was against God's law. She should have respected our beliefs but in the same token, we should have always respected. You don't talk to ppl constantly about sex and how you prefer it and you also do not condemn ppl for their sexual references or their religious reliefs, You also don't talk constantly on religious or political beliefs. Steer away from sex, politics and religion and talk about pleasant things only. In other words, keep meal time happy.

Christians love everyone or should. God taught us love. The views of many religions teach was was taught in the Bible. God is right in the end. God judges us all in the end. Sin is sin to God. God said adultery any type of sexual sin is against him and your own self. I want to stand before God forgiven and saved by the blood sacrifice of Jesus. We are all sinners we all fall short of the glory of God. But in the end it is what the Almighty God creator says about what's wrong or right what sin is. Heaven or Hell that will be based on whether or not you accept Jesus Christ as ones Saviour.

I remember in the early 80's (1982-1983) reading an article in a gay publication about this, so it started way before 1991. In the article, a person from another gay publication claimed he heard her say, during a concert, that Aids was God's punishment for being gay. He was there to report on the concert, so I believed him. Before that, I had all Donna's records and was a huge fan. That day, based on what I read, I stopped being a fan and never bought another record. It's sad that I'm just now hearing the truth 40+ years later and after her death. I'm sorry, Donna.

The Pharisees said Moses gave them the bill of divorcement but Christ answered in the beginning God created them one man for one woman. Now in the end We all will stand before God to be Judged. Greetings from Greece!!! I think it is very possible that something was said during the argument, most likely in the context of a lifestyle of many partners rather than for the actual sexual orientation. It is almost certain it was blown out of proportion and was repeated in misleading and out of context ways. By listening closely to how she describes it, while at the same time seeing and hearing about the type of person she was [it's so difficult to talk about Donna Summer in the past tense], I am convinced she did not mean in any discriminating or judgemental way. Yes, sometimes religious beliefs can overshadow logic or acceptance of simple human traits, but I firmly believe this was not the case here. Donna had always been restrained on comments about public issues and has always been sensitive and respectful to other people's feelings, unique qualities and characteristics. But even in the unlikely even that something was said in that direction, when someone shows honestly and wholeheartedly that they do not actually share that viewpoint and show honest and sincere regret should their comments have been misinterpreted, in my mind it is as if it never happened. So, even in the unlikely event that it did happen, we should keep in mind that we ALL make mistakes and we ALL might say things we don't mean at one point or another or say things that are misinterpreted in an argument and taken the wrong way. Her sadness and emotion about the misunderstanding are sincere and it takes a strong and honest soul to confront it as she did. She will always be remembered for her timeless music legacy but also for being a great individual.

always thought it was some moron confusing Summer with Gloria Gaynor. When Gaynor had her mini Comeback with I Am What I Am, Gaynor, when asked on Boston TV about her gay fans or the songs connection to the gay community via its origins in LA. Age Aux Follles, made comments about loving the sinner but hating the sin. I was just a twelve year old blooming gay and I felt so disgusted by her tone. When I heard that Summer had reportedly said similar, I thought that it was probably a case of someone confusing two black women who were both called The Queen of Disco. Summer always denied making those Adam and Steve comments and the like; Gloria Gaynor not so much.
