I agree Balaji. We can travel at a higher speed if we have confidence that we can slow or stop quickly when necessary.But we cannot make progress with just a brake pedal! We also need an accelerator to enable us to reach higher speeds. In the risk world, this is the function of opportunities - allowing us to work faster, smarter, cheaper.Safe and effective driving requires balanced use of both brake and accelerator, and similarly in business we must balance our management of threats and opportunities to optimise performance and results.Of course none of this is helpful if we're pointing in the wrong direction, which is why we have a steering wheel. The final destination is set by our goals and objectives, and we "steer" towards them using strategy.An interesting analogy! Thanks again Balaji - and Happy New Year!
Hello Jan Chytil, Thanks for taking the time to comment on the presentation. As the organiser of the event in the video, I have some insight in to how and why the presentation was conducted. Like David, I too agree with some of your comments regarding projects and risks, however, I also note that, from my experience, the vast majority of projects are rarely successful in meeting their objectives of coming in on time, on budget and at the required level of quality. It is surprising that as much as we learn about project management, western society has a difficult time producing the required results. This skill will become even more critical in the future, when most people, I forecast, will be working in a project framework, networked with others across the globe, for short engagements. There is a clear need for closer examination of project management, as their results have not been pleasing, and are more critical than ever. In this light, our Faculty of Risk Management organised engagements for risk practioners to critically look at such important issues, and as a collective, under expert leadership, to work out ways to improve initiatives such as successful project execution. If successful project management was indeed only a simple math and engineering problem, as you say, it would be a wonderful world, but it’s far more complex than that and therefore worthy of presentations from experts, such as David Hillson, to stimulate thought and innovation.
Please, do not get confused by shamans like Risk Dr. David Hillson. Risks, threads and opportunities are nature of daily experience. Taking calculated risk is a part of any project, any sport, and anybody’s life. The “Risk Dr” is NOT going to help you to control risks in your projects, ‘programmes’ and lives. Estimating and calculating risk is a matter of advanced mathematics, engineering, and good communication within the project team and with your customers. You have to balance the ‘risks’ with ‘rewards’ as any team coach, a bank robber or a CEO does on daily basis. p.s. his own photo on the first slide tells a lot about his mental capacity.
Hi Jan. Thanks for sharing your opinion. I'm sorry that you didn't like this presentation. I agree with you that risk is part of life and we need to take the right risks safely. Advanced mathematical modelling has its place in risk management, but I think it's equally important to be sure that we are thinking correctly about risk in the first place. Also I've never been called a "shaman" before - it's an interesting choice of word!
