The only thing that makes sense to me is they’ve expanded on the map drastically with sky, underwater, and underground zones that essentially double the map size and that’s why it’s taken so long to develop.

I think stuff also just got in the way of development. It’s more clear with Zelda than many of the other games recently because they announced Zelda so early, not when it was ready and done.
I also think they pushed it to spring more so to give the team breathing room, less than they needed all that time, but who knows?

This is my hope too. Although, I still worry that, even if the map is drastically bigger with a lot of new areas to explore, I worry it still won't be enough to justify making this a sequel in the same world. If there still isn't a big enemy variety, or if the combat system is still bare bones, if if the story is still a bit lacking, or if there aren't enough gameplay shakeups or innovations from the first game to give us some new mechanics to play with, or hell even if there are a ton of new areas, but like in BotW1 there's just not a lot to do in them, I worry this sequel will still come off as underwhelming. I really hope the actual reveal trailer will do good work to dissuade these worries.

No confirmation that we're getting underwater. But I hope we do, I think there was a lot of neat environments down there that we missed out on because we couldn't dive or sink to the bottom. I'd like to see more character development though, discoverable story (especially regarding the past) was also largely missed.

@@Tazer_Silverscar It's not confirmed, but I think it's pretty likely. They obviously have to know past Zelda games have had neat underwater areas accessible only by diving, I think it's confirmed it was planned but cut from BotW, and to add evidence to that, there literally chests in BotW you just straight up can't access because they're at the bottom of the sea, which probably means at one point they planned for players to be able to dive down a d get them.

I think the biggest thing Breath of the Wild has going for it to stand apart from Elden Ring is the movement tech. Nothing in Elden Ring felt as satisfying to me as being able to just climb up any mountain I see and traverse via paraglider. They definitely announced it too early, and it's natural that hype has fizzled out after this long, but I'm not worried at this point. Like you said, it's going to be good at baseline, and I can imagine a number of ways that they can make the world feel fresh. Imagine starting the game in a newly born Hyrule Castle Town as a recognized hero who everyone loves. Imagine having a Tarry Town-style progression where you slowly help rebuild Castle Town over the course of the game. Imagine that Purah, who no longer has to devote all her time to studying Guardians, devotes herself instead to improving the lives of those around here and turning Hateno Village into a tech-driven hub for innovation.
What if Sidon really grew into his own as the leader of the Zora, and by the time we get back there they've become the leading economic power of the world? They've built more majestic bridges, started running trade caravans between Hateno Village, the new Castle Town, and Kakariko Village. Instead of sneaking around a Lynel, you're tasked with clearing road obstructions, finding rare treasures to sell, or escorting a merchant.
Imagine every town having space to breathe and grow into full cities now that the Calamity is no more.
And when all of that becomes too mundane, don't forget that we have the mystery of Ganondorf's return and the Lands in the Sky. We have ruins underground and a corruption strong enough to ruin the Master Sword. There's so much that this game can be!

well I can guarantee we won't se any of the town building. this takes place directly after botw so there isn't enough time. however a interesting idea would be things rising underground to the surface. or going back in time to when hyrule was pristine. That is one of the few things i can see taking so much time is the rebuilding of all of hyrule but in the past. Or maybe there are massice cities underground and in the sky. but 6 years in a long ass time.

Basically we're still waiting for the games major twist/gimmick. If parts of the world are still similar to the original then that will weaken the exploration to some degree so hopefully we see some crazy changes. We really need to see a great expansion to the game's bestiary with proper new enemies, Bokoblins with larger horns on top of a Stone Talus is neat but it's still those same enemies again just in a new formation. Also needs to expand on the weapon variety in general, especially for bow and shield types.
Also yeah Elden Ring raised that bar a ton. It's kind of a blessing in disguise that BoTW2 got delayed because playing it in the same year as Elden Ring would honestly weaken the experience imo. Need that break before it comes out I think.

The expanded world is most likely referring to underground areas that aren't generic shrine rooms. Perhaps something like Elden Ring where there is entire biomes and interconnected systems underground. Perhaps there is some sort of system where gannon's corruption spreads throughout the land and it makes navigation between major regions much harder or even impossible. You then have a reason to explore the sky and underground to navigate between regions. I also wouldn't be surprised where scaling the castle after it starts floating will get you high enough to get your first visit to the skyworld.

Elden Ring: Dense world design, environmental storytelling/worldbuilding and lots of things to do/look at
BOTW: Plain Air, Open exploration, with a focus on specific set pieces.
I liked Elden Ring, thought it was amazing, but there was such a myriad of activities, enemies, and attention to detail that I found myself getting overloaded at times. I think BOTW has a lighter approach and really lets the world sit and breath.

Elden Ring has a lot of areas on the map that are either disconnected from the rest of the map, meaning you need to find a teleporter to reach it, or areas blocked off from going directly to it, so you have to find a path around the back. So it feels different to how you can go anywhere in BotW as long as you cram enough stamina food for climbing. The issue is twofold. Firstly, they announced this way too early. Making us wait this long with the anticipation that it would come out soon exasperated the fatigue in waiting.
Secondly, as Arlo said, considering the amount of time it took for the first game took LESS time than the direct sequel based off it is a major factor in why I’m very worried for the game. By the time this game comes out, it will have been 6 WHOLE YEARS since BOTW 1 came out. If you want to factor in COVID, you could take a year or two out of total development time (which is being very generous as development didn’t halt, just slowed down) then that would mean they have still had over 4 years of development to make a game with which is foundation has already been laid.
I’m sure it’ll be great, but I’m doubting it’s ability to meet expectations and Nintendo is not helping by giving us literally next to no substantial information on the game 3 years after its announcement.

I played through the game a few times, and I bought and played through Dark Souls III multiple times as well.

Elden Ring highly encourages exploration and greatly rewards the player for taking risks and looking in every nook and cranny. You are constantly rewarded for taking a chance.
The world itself feels alive too. It never feels like groups of enemies that are placed somewhere as an obstacle. It feels like they have a purpose in the world.
Boss encounters being randomly in the open world was fantastic. Riding along on Torrent and then boss music and a health bar showing up were very exciting. It really kept me on my toes and made me always prepare for the road ahead in ways other open world games would just have that section for traversal and that's it.
There's a great sense of verticality in Elden Ring. Absolutely massive cave systems. The base map. And high mountain top areas. The game just keeps opening up more and more.
The map is absolutely massive and not just big for the sake of being big. There's legitimate stuff to do and see in damn near every corner of the map. It's not just huge sections of empty grass lands and that's enough to be considered "game play"
The stuff to do isn't as repetetive as say a Ubisoft game where there's dozens or even hundreds of things to do but you're basically doing the same 5 actions over and over again.
And to directly compare it to BOTW there's significantly more gameplay styles. People have gotten creative with BOTW but in Elden Ring just has so many different options to mess around with.
All in all I'll say I can understand some people not understanding or enjoying Elden Ring but for me I found it to be considerably better than BOTW in just about every way. I am slightly biased I suppose because I didn't like BOTW much to all though so take that for what you will.

on the other hand, Elden Ring really did do literally all the things I wanted from a BOTW sequel. Fromsoft has finally hit their stride in the public eye, and therefore, Zelda team finally has an actual competitor for "best development studio out there"

I’m still excited for Zelda. It was one of my favorite series growing up. I kind of like that Nintendo mostly doesn’t listen to the fan base. I think creative freedom has allowed their company to stand out from the crowd over and over again because they aren’t chasing trends/focusing on making a certain formula and perfecting it until it’s used up.
While you are right, that some people won’t give the game another chance if some things aren’t fixed (which is a shame) that is completely up to them. If we want new experiences, we should let Nintendo surprise us/show us what we didn’t know we wanted all over again. That’s what creates that magic feeling when you play one of their games. While they won’t always land, and/or won’t be what we hoped or wanted (sometimes it’s just not good), I would place my bets on Nintendo being more reliable for fun, unique games, more than any other company in the video game industry.
I won’t deny that as a company Nintendo seems tone deaf sometimes. They refuse to listen on long running issues. For the most part I would say that is a bad thing. But I’m kind of glad they don’t when it comes to how they design and get feed back for their games. Not a lot of companies have the type of freedom Nintendo has creatively.
While I also want them to perfect each of their games formulas, and make the best version of each game (remakes of classic titles updated, sequels to games that only touched the surface of what they could mechanically do, old ip’s getting new games, etc), I think it’s good that they wait until they have new ideas that they want to try before bringing the game out. That’s why you always hear Nintendo say in interviews (generically) that they ‘wanted to make a new f-zero, but didn’t have any new ideas, or thoughts on where said series should go, so they chose not to make the game’ I actually really appreciate that.
The industry standard right now is more along the lines of: fans want a new game in said series: (think halo, call of duty, assassins creed, etc) they rush out the same kind of game with nice graphics. To me, that’s where you lose the magic. The reasons those games were so much fun originally is because they used to be the greatest or best at one point in their respective categories of games. But now their formulas have gone stale.
    Keep doing you Nintendo.

I still have retained my hype from the first announcement trailer, partially because I don't own something that can support Elden Ring, or any of the other huge open world games, so to see a new one coming to Switch is still exciting. There's also the factor of me being a recent Switch-owner, so I haven't played BOTW for as long, so some of it still feels fresh and new. But I see your perspective Arlo. But still, if the game turns out to be a BOTW 1.5, that would still disappoint me. There are quite a few things I think they could do, and if they simply don't build on the world (apart from the sky) then that would lead to a disappointing game.

  • @Nosidda
    @Nosidda 2 роки тому +49

So Arlo, I say this with respect for you, what you do, and out of respect for your opinion. I think you're being a little bit unfair to Breath of the Wild 2.
I get it, I've personally felt my hype levels for BotW2 go down as well. However, bear in mind that we still know next to nothing about this game right now, and we've only had two teasers shown. We have no idea just how massive of a game this will actually be, and I think the real reason why people are feeling worried about the sequel is two factors.
One, it's a sequel, which already low bars expectations for essentially being the same thing, but again. Two, they're reusing the overworld, which begs the question for many people of how much of the game will be new.
But let's use this logic for a sec. Take into consideration that BotW 2 is a sequel that reuses the overworld that worries you so much, and think about the fact that despite them reusing such a major aspect of the original game, it's still taking them 6 years to make the game. Isn't that reason to believe that there's a lot more to this game than what we already know? That despite them reusing so much of the original game, the amount of work being done is so big, that it's taking them this long to build it?
Sure, you can argue that it's probably due to development problems behind the scenes, and we certainly see that across the industry. But the Zelda series itself hasn't suffered from huge development issues in ages, and even the behind the scenes development issues that the series has seen hasn't been nearly as bad as other parts of the industry. The Zelda team has proven very clearly that they know what they're doing.
I think it's safe to say that the long development isn't due to troubles in paradise, I think it's more to do with the reason that the games developers themselves have stated from their own mouths. That the ideas they had for this game grew so much, that they transitioned it from being DLC to being a sequel. The devs themselves have stated that even now, the team still keeps coming up with ideas to make the game bigger and better. It seems to me that the long development isn't due to troubles development, it's because the game is a lot bigger than what we've seen.
Also, take a moment to consider the timing of the games delay to 2023. Don't you think it's odd that the game was delayed very shortly after the release of Elden Ring? Could it be coincidence? Sure. But I don't think so. I personally believe the devs are taking notes from that game, further coming up with ideas.
One could argue that it's too late in development to add more to the game, but history shows otherwise. The creator of Sonic recently stated that for the first Sonic game, they incorporated the mechanic of not being able to die so long as you had one ring mere weeks before the games release. He further clarified that late additions of this degree still commonly happen to this day. Same with Goldeneye on N64, the multiplayer it was famous for wasn't added in until a couple of weeks before release. Games still undergo developments, even more weeks or even days from launch, especially in the era of day one patches. It's not out of the question that the devs took notes from Elden Ring and decided to take an extra year to build on those ideas.
I think what's happening is you're latching too hard on that "reusing the world" aspect, and reading far too much into it. Just because they're reusing the world doesn't mean the game won't be able to keep said world interesting. You yourself have been an advocate of asset flipping, and I don't think reusing the world will negatively effect the game at all. Plenty of other games have done exactly that, and turned out to be great games regardless. A Link Between World's, Jak 3, Banjo-Tooie, and many other examples of great games that reused aspects of the world from the previous game while building on it to make it bigger and better.
The fact that development is taking this long and we still know next to nothing about it tells me that the lack of hype just harkens to being too worried about one specific thing about it that we do actually know about it. I think you're thinking way too much into that one aspect. Yes, BotW has a lot to live up to, but until we actually see the full reveal, I think it's unfair to so worried about it when we really haven't seen much of anything about the game aside from two teaser trailers.

I’ll be honest, I’ve been playing a lot of Elden Ring and I’m still incredibly excited for Botw2. The switch’s weaker visuals/power still don’t bother too much me yet, and that could be because I always grew up with weaker hardware. But honestly l don’t think the two game series need to be competing with each other. I’d really like it if each did their own thing. That’s my own thought process at least. BotW for me still has the unique interactive aspect to it that Elden Ring kinda lacks - no climbing, no physics-based stuff to mess around with. In that regard, BotW still is the superior open world to me, even if Elden Ring's world feels tighter in a lot of spots. The Great Plateau in the beginning of BotW is kinda what I'd compare large parts of Elden Ring to.
That said, BotW lacked a few key things for me - for one, more actual dungeons with unique asthetics. I want to stumble into a cave or forest that's laid out like an actual Zelda dungeon, not just 4 relatively short vaguely sci-fi looking physics-puzzles or 120 even shorter puzzles. Elden Ring, for the most part, was the same in that it had 3 amazing actual dungeons and the smaller ones felt almost procedually generated in their layouts and looks. BotW1 lacked a distinct Zelda feel to me even though I still think it's a good game.
BotW2 has quite a few things it can do to feel fresh or better than the first one. And if it takes longer, I'm fine. The one thing I'm worried about is that they're delaying it for some new console, like they seemingly did with the first game.

the reason i was so happy about BotW was that it copied Skyrim's formula of having not just a big map but a huge density of interactable objects and points of interest such as dungeons camps towns random events and so on. what BotW did beyond that is gliding and climbing. and skyrim did what i said in the first sentence, since morrowind, which was like in the 2000s. so no, BotW didn't redefine open world games. even ainuma (probably spelling it wrong) said skyrim was a huge inspiration, it's no secret.

  • @krimsonkatt
    @krimsonkatt 2 роки тому +4

How to make BotW 2 the best it can be:
1: Make it story focused, possibly with multiple endings. BotW1's biggest flaw was the lack of a compelling story, with all the major events happening in the past and nothing of note happening in the current time, allowing complete freedom. I think it's fair to sacrifice a bit of that freedom for a better story, or even better create multiple endings that change based on which point in the story you faced the final boss like in Chrono Trigger.
2: This one is very important. MAKE THE WORLD ORIGINAL. Reusing the map from BotW1 and ONLY the map of BotW1 would make it so you're just playing the same game again just with a new story. I'm pretty sure that the reason BotW2 is taking so long to make is because they're making multiple realms, each the size of BotW1's Hyrule. Similar to Elden Ring but even bigger. Possibly a light, (sky) neutral, (Hyrule) and dark (underground/demon realm) worlds similar to A Link to the Past or A Link Between Worlds but expanded even greater. Hopefully this is the case and they're not making Hyrule 1.5 like people speculate.
3: Remove breakable weapons and instead have you buy weapons and equipment and obtain them from chests like a traditional RPG. BOTW had a very flawed inventory system and that seriously needs to be fixed. Having to create so many new weapon and armor models is also why the game could be taking so long to come out.
4: Remove shrines, instead having a much fewer number of optional mini dungeons scattered across the world like in Octopath Traveler. Spirit Orbs can be obtained from these, one for defeating the boss, one for collecting all chests, and one can be obtained by finding it somewhere hidden in the dungeon. You can also find spirit orbs by completing quests like you could obtain Graditute Crystals from quests like in Skyward Sword. Quests are also a lot more meaningful like Terry Town instead of being mostly fetch quests, though there is a fewer number of them. Some quests even give multiple spirit orbs for the longer and more challenging ones!
5: Actual, legit dungeons like the older games. Not the repeditive divine beast nonsense from the first game. Make dungeons more like Hyrule Castle instead of the divine beasts, a open dungeon where you solve optional puzzles while making your way to the boss which you can accomplish in multiple ways. You should also be able to do the dungeons in any order you choose similar to A Link Between World but to a greater extent.
6: More RPG mechanics like in Zelda 2! Legit RPG levels and stats would be amazing and you could actually tune the enemy rank to your actual level instead of arbitrary invisible values. Maybe you could also learn new spells from your glowy arm thing. (which will likely also be your companion fairy) I would love for the fairy spell to return in glorious HD!
7: Far more enemy variety. One of BotW1's biggest flaws was the lack of it, with you fighting the same 3 enemy types and the same 3 minibosses for literally the entire game. There were so many classic Zelda enemies missing from that game such as Poes, Darknaughts, Dekubabas, Dodongos, Skeeds, LikeLikes, etc. It was mostly just Bokoblins, Moblins, and Lizalfos for the entire game with the rare keese, chuchu, or octorok popping up every once or a while. We need all of them back for the sequel!

@@Buglin_Burger7878 calling that stat based progression is like calling chess an RPG because “Its a game and you’re playing roles within it.” Its not.
A stat based progression specifically relies on the fact that you have gradually increased statistics throughout the game in order to soft-gate you out of specific areas until you’re ready. Zelda has _never_ done this prior to BotW, not even in Zelda 2. The progression in Zelda has always been item based, not stat based. You obtain ‘X’ item, that gives access to ‘Y’ area. You can get upgrades to make combat easier, but apart from bosses, which are usually also locked behind specific items, combat is never designed to be what blocks you from progressing as you are always reasonably equipped to handle said combat situation. If anything, BotW attempted to merge the 2 styles of progression together while ultimately missing the point of what makes each style work in the first place.

The “new features” mentioned when the delay to spring 2023 was announced is a huge downplay to the amount they’ve got coming to add on to an already created engine and most of the map there’s no way they’ve been just twiddling their thumbs, especially when they took the time making the entire chemistry engine, and the patents give me hope for exploration and movement/combat too (I love Elden Ring by the way, SO good), so I really think its gonna be easy to get hyped during a better look at the new stuff at E3 or whenever they’ll release info before the spring 2023 release.

Honestly I don't understand how Elden Ring is described as even close to as groundbreaking as botw. Its open world dark souls, which is great, I have played 120 hours and enjoyed most of it. But botw's edge imo was the physics engine and movement options that made an otherwise average open world into a fun sandbox. Felt like an indie game with AAA-budget.

  • @MalzraAirwynn

I can see where you're coming from with Elden Ring. Honestly though the games scratch very different itches for me.
Elden ring is mostly run around, fight things, run around, fight things. That's not to say it's bad. But it doesn't really have 'puzzles.' It doesn't' have little korrock archery challenges or mini puzzles.
Another thing is rewards. ER has a ton of different builds you can do, which is good. But honestly it also has a problem. The vast majority of weapons, spells, ashes of war, spirit ashes, talismans, tears etc that I find...I won't end up using. In BOTW, I always know that the spirit orb at the end of a dungeon is going to be useful. But it kind of becomes boring in ER when almost everything I pick up I'm not going to use. In BOTW weapons break and you can freely use any weapon you pick up, and you aren't likely to get enough korok seeds to max out your equipment slots until way late in the game unless you're going out of your way to speed run them or something.
World traversal is also just...much better in BOTW in my opinion. Climbing and paragliding offer a ton of versatilty. The dlc horse armor makes horses far more easy and convenient to use. You can also shield surf or use revali's gale to quickly rise up high. In ER you basically have Torrent and teleportation to sites of grace. You have wind geiseers and those tombstone platform things to go up and down cliffs at specified points, but they're at predetermined points. Actual world traversal easily wins out in BOTW for me.
BOTW has things like temperature in the world, gravity mechanics, the runes. And while elden ring has better graphics, I like the art style and direction of Zelda more. I like that Hyrule has towns, not just the occasional rare person that doesn't want to kill you. Hyrule feels like a world worth saving. I don't really care what happens to the Lands Between outside of a couple of npcs. That may be intentional, Souls games are bleak by design, but I'm just not really invested in what ultimately happens to the Lands Between when the credits roll.
I do really like ER. It's helped me break past a barrier and go back and enjoy older souls games too. But while the two games are on the surface similar, they offer such vastly different actual experiences that ER's world does not replace BOTW for me. And so I doubt ER is going to impact my impressions of the sequel either.
Again though, I don't say this to bash ER. I like ER a lot. And it does some things better than BOTW. They are both open world games where you hit things with sword and shoot bows and arrows but for me the similarities stop there. This post has largely been me pointing out the things about BOTW, but some points in ER's favor for some balance include diverse builds and stats you can level up as you wish, tons of spells and weapon skills/ashes of war, a lack of boring 'bring me X of Y item' fetch quests, harder and more in depth combat, etc.

I like this comment because you elaborate perfectly in why I prefer elden ring but from the other side and I would like to share my perspective so people can see how different games are and how both works perfeclty for your type of person
Elden ring is focused on combat and exploration only, builds, crafting and movement are just more tools for combat, so yeah, there is less to do besides fighting in elden ring, but that was what I wanted since I was invested with the combat and I really didn't want more things to do, what it seems like a lack of variety gets compensated by a huge ways to do exactly that, combat
the rewards, hell yeah the rewards, nothing like dying 10 times to a boss just to discover the reward is a weapon you can't even use, I can totally understand this complain because it is kind of bullshit for people who expect a reward from their work, nothing wrong with that, is just that when you are having fun exploring and fighting for the pure joy of doing it that was the reward, the chest at the end was a plus, the incompatible items just make it more special when when I get something I want, because if every chests was special, no one would be
movement is something I can say is faster in botw, but not necessarily better, it depends on what was intended, ER was designed to be slower because being able to climb every mountain and fly from there would rob the player the joy of exploration that most of the times ends up finding more dungeons that I didn't expect, making them feel like I discovere them by just casualy being there, it was designed to be traversed on foot or horse and solve the little puzzle of how to get there, it may seems like a limitation but its a puzzle on itself, because platforming isnt that reliable for crazy stuff
artstyle and story are very subjective but I'll give something to talk about too, I think both games have an excelent artstyle but graphically elden ring will age faster, probably the only issue with botw in this aspect is the technical limitations only but is something that is being addresed already by modders and it will pass the test of time like a king, story wise elden ring and from soft games are pretty decent, not gonna say better or worst, just unique, how? when you care about the world you can get tons of info by their very unique method of storytelling, but if like me, you didn't care that much you can skip it entirely and still get the experience, it just gives this sensation of acomplisment for invested people and freedom for someone indiferent to it
ultimately I just wanted to give some hints about how elden ring works for some people and how it didn't replace botw for me neither, after playing both games I do believe both give different experiences, being elden ring more of a action game about adapting and learning while botw is more of a sandbox and puzzle game about being creative and efficient, neither do I want to bash in one or the other but reinforce the different itch comment by how little can be compared for a choice and instead a recomendation to get both, because as open worlds there is almost nothing better
its ok to like one or the other but I think Arlo should not expect something from one that the other one provides

Now, I don't want to come across as 'Arlo is wrong how dare he feel like ER is replacing BOTW!' If that's how he feels, that's fair. I just have a hard time wrapping my head around it because I see them as fundamentally extremely different games, far more different than they are similar. And it's also possible that while Elden Ring is good, not everyone shares the sentiment toward it as you do. Personally, I still prefer BOTW in almost every way. The world in Elden Ring may be bigger, and the variety may be greater, but BOTW is just so fluid in my opinion. You can play practically the whole game without even having to battle one enemy, excluding bosses. Elden Ring you HAVE to combat. It's a Souls game, after all. And some people don't even like Souls games. I respect your opinion Arlo, but this just seems entirely subjective. That was until Elden Ring released to which, after seeing reviews and playing it myself, my immediate thought was "Welp, looks like BotW2 is getting delayed". Elden Ring kinda killed the hype for BotW2 by actually fulfilling the main reason I was hyped for BotW2.
It was delayed as predicted and I'm not worried like some are that that means it's going through troubled production or anything as I speculate it was delayed due to a change in the circumstances of its release rather than an issue with its production. It will no longer be the game that's head and shoulders above the rest returning to show who's boss and how open-world games should be done and is now perhaps having to play a little catch-up on its own. I don't think they wanted to compete with Elden Ring for GOTY and I think they wanted to analyze why Elden Ring was being praised so highly to take some lessons from its success in order to make an even better product, so to do this I speculate they delayed it to first or second quarter of 2023.

So nobody was surprised by the delay, really. And even without Elden Ring, there would have been no surprise. I think the main reasons for the delay are simple: 1) Covid and 2) the whole base idea they had grew into something bigger.
I am not dissing Elden Ring here, just to point that out. I haven't played it but I believe everyone who says it's amazing (it's just not my genre). I just don't think Nintendo feels threatened by others making good games. They've always been in their own little cosmos.

Well, my biggest theory here is that while they're using the same map, they're going to be inventing a completely different one in the form of an alternate Zelda map, much like Hyrule and Lorule, WW's Hyrule under the ocean, and IN PARTICUALRY we're gonna have time travel mechanics, much like (MUCH like) Skyward Sword's Lanyru desert and OoTs Adult Link and Young Link's world. Why do I think this?
    - Skyward Sword remaster was announced around the time the original deadline for Botw 2 was
    - Rumoured WW remaster (ofc, this is really, REALLY rumoured)
    - Time Rewinding Mechanics in the Trailer
    - A Decrepit Master Sword (Possible that Fi will be coming back in some form)
    - Demise returning (I had evidence of this, but I'd need to rewatch the trailer to talk about it)
Hell, it's even possible we see Skyloft, or what remains of it, given how as of 2022, the timelines "ends" with Botw (I doubt it will 'end', but rn thats how it looks)
Im holding out on this, cause I firmly believe this is the direction they're heading. they want to do SS how it was originally intended, which to me, totally makes sense as to why they released SS so recently, they wanted players to examine the differences in the SS and the new BoTW. It's a weird theory, and is probs bs - but I firmly believe in it. It's not unusual for Nintendo to pull stunts like this.

BOTW was such a gamechanger for all of the open world games, they just can't do it again. It could improve of what it achieved by building up the points that it didn't so well, like story, cutscenes and complex large dungeons.
If the old overworld is just for traversing to the new cooler parts it could be not so important they don't do a whole new world, when there are other places to explore instead.
I personally would had loved if they did a prequel with a prospering Hyrule before the calamity, with all places whole and not laying into ruins, so that you could remember the places as they were destroyed, but now they are alive and being well.
But yeah, they obviously don't go that route.

Botw emphasizes the open world exploration with almost limitless climbing, paragliding and searching all of the lands corners for overworld secrets and encounters while Elden Ring encourages you to find really atmospheric and well crafted dungeons, bosses and gauntlets.
Both are amazing to me and I would love to see Botw2 take a lot of queues from elden ring regarding dungeons, combats and boss fights but I would equally as much love to see a potential Elden ring 2 take more inspiration from Botw. Imagine being able to scale the Haligtree through climbing it rather than having to run on its branches! Or the epic moment of having a vertically themed bossfight on the walls of Leyndell!

Maybe designing whole dungeons, making weapons and items like the hookshot and such, possibly bringing back some of that metroidvania-esque style progress? I'd like to think Nintendo wouldn't want to do a sequel to one of the best Zelda games ever made without raising that bar even further considering the influence the original had on open world game design. while its true from soft took a lot of inspiration from botw I think their fundations are different, I feel like the approach for botw was a sandbox and for elden ring was the combat, both take advantage of the open world aspects like exploration and freedom and both are great examples of how to make a good open world game, but as you said elden ring perfected the action adventure open world but also botw perfected the sandbox open world, while I prefer elden ring challenging adventure I can't see botw as the fundations for it because it was just other kind of game, elden ring clicked with me more but botw may work better for anyone looking for that relaxed and creative experience

I’m completely in the same boat. The biggest reason is that there absolute silence on the sequel that there’s just nothing to hold my excitement for such a long time. And when other games that are just as good if not better keep coming out during that time, it just turns into “oh right I forgot they were working on that”. It’s why there’s uneasiness in the God of War fanbase as well since they were supposed to release it in 2021 but now it’s pushed to Nov of 2022 and besides the teaser that just dropped, there has been nothing about the game’s news going on.

i really wish the map is similar to what happened with saints row 1 and 2 where the map is the same shape, but filled and shifted with extra nooks and crannys everywhere that it doenst even feel the same until you see something that has stayed the same and fills you with a little nostagia to how the world used to be.

I'm glad you acknowledge that some people didn't really like the first one, people act like it's the perfect game yet I got it at launch and I've tried multiple times but wasn't able to get myself to finish it

I know that I am in the minority here but I actually liked the microdungeon aspect of it. I like not having to be so reliant on doing the dungeons in order to enjoy the game. And that I could do them in any order that I wanted.
