As a Paramedic I’m going to critique the CRAP this of that call
1. ALL ambulances are required to carry this device called a STAIR-CHAIR which is safely used to move patients from the UPSTAIRS floor of their location the ambulance was called to.
2. People with a BP of 70/30 is NOT stable and should be treated immediately with a fluid bolus BEFORE going to medications.
3. People with anxiety normally don’t have BP of 70/30. That they perceived as “anxiety” is the body’s flight-fight response in attempts to get the BP back up.
4. For people with Dysautonomia, it’s not uncommon for people to experience BP fluctuations....
5. I’ve been guilty of saying “sweetie” to a patient. However, If I had ANY hit or inclination that the “sweetie” made the patient feel uncomfortable, I would immediately change my language to fit the patients needs. If that made her feel uncomfortable, they should have critiqued their language to FIT her needs. Making a hypotensive patient feel uncomfortable can be detrimental to their outcome.. (just sayin).... to be continued on your next vlog

Yes we do🙌 after advocating and showing we should be taken Serious. Sadly the medical health system here in Florida is scary and belittling....watch our recent vlog where we talk more about our stay💪.

I am glad they let someone stay in the hospital with you. In my area currently no one but the patient is allowed.
EMT here.. thwy have a stair chair that they sit and strap people in to bring them up or down flights of stairs or a scoop board and or a white or black tarp like pad with handles on it also... oh I'm so sorry
With her vitals like that they would immediately hook her up to 3 to 5 lead heart monitor, to ekg, start a bolus of fluids usually 2 liters but not all Ambo have pumps they hang the fluids from a hook on ceiling or walls and use a peripheral line. Depending on the company and or if it was a city or county ambo and a paramedic on board can sometimes use the port tho it is rare.. they also would hook her up to o2 for prophylactic to keep her comfortable and the fluids would help with the severe dehydration from whatever is causing her to have low vitals... and for speedimits with hr that low (bradycardia) and low BP (hypotension) if she had a fever they wou 99.9 call the hospital and suspect sepsis and lights and sirens.. this makes me livid.. and for speed they go close or above the speed limit, lights and Depending on code level classification they also turn on sirens... it also depends on if the ambitious was a BLS or ALS meaning if it's just 2 emts on the ambo then it's slow and stupidity from the emts... but usually in Hillsborough or polk they have 1 paramedic with an emt or 2 and possibly a paramedic driving.. ALS (advanced life support) is usually all paramedics 2 of them and emt driving or 1 paramedic with patient and other driving rare though.. and the sweetie calling omfg... my HR and bp does that dives and skyrocket it's effed up.. I have been discharged from er and checked back in immediately after d/c
Yikes!! Thanks for the update Paul. Janiece, hope you’re restored to baseline (or better, if possible) & in the comfort of her own home. I once rode in the passenger seat of an ambulance, my friend was barely conscious. It wasn’t until he started to flatline that EMT driver hit the gas and added lights & sirens. (Friend: revived & survived). If you’re single, even if you do self-advocate (assuming you’re well enough to do so), the ER can still discharge. I was a comeback an hour later & ended up staying 10+ hours the 2nd time. When my friend brought me to an ER for a myasthenic crisis (I could barely hold myself upright), the ER intake refused to take info off my medical alert wristband! Apparently, barely conscious requires one to communicate everything that can easily be obtained through an ID & PIN or QR scanner. It’s the one day I left home without dragging around my emergency medical binder. I really hope Janiece is OK now.
I love what you said about advocating for yourself to be admitted because so many times I've been sent home early and ended up back in ER. My friend was sent home recently and she had to go back and is now dealing with sepsis >^< its ridiculous when they sont listen to you
Couple of things from a retired nurse
1. The EMT’s I have worked with, the majority are excellent. However, there are some that do not like it when you know or have an idea of what is going on. Just sayin. I have had some definite issues with some.
2. I am glad you called the rescue squad. With a BP and Heart Rate of
70/30 and 40, you were exactly right to call them. They have the meds and equipment should something more serious happen.
3. In all my 23+ years of being a nurse, I have never called anyone sweetie.
4. I am glad they admitted her. With her HR low and then high, it is probably a metabolic issue. Not just fluid rescue needed.
5. Don’t feel bad if they would not use her port. I, also had a port. Only certain people can access it and use it. As a nurse, you have to be certified to access it. It is called “Scope of practice”. Nurses and EMT’s can lose their license if they perform duties outside of there scope of practice.
6. Hope they have found out what is causing this erratic HR. I saw that you finally got a diagnosis and am happy that she can now be treated appropriately.
Oh my friend, we're praying for Janiece and her full recovery, this has happened to me too, and thankfully Janiece is getting care so that's a good thing, chronic illness is definitely not easy and sometimes finding out what's wrong is hard, we are sending you guy's lots of prayers and support. Hang in there guy's it's a rough road but, take it a day at a time. We hope this gets figured out soon. Please keep us all updated. 🙏😬🙋♀️
Prayers...I hope they figure out what’s going on quickly. I do not EMTs and ambulances either. My son was having heart issues and our doctor did multiple tests and decided the ambulance needed to take him to ER. He was 18, scared and they wouldn’t allow me to go with him. They arrived at the doctors and the doctor told them what was going on and they decide they have to do another EMG before they would leave! I beat them to the hospital! I was going the speed limit! Then the ER says they will triage him in a room when he arrives and they would come get me. Nope, as I’m calling my husband to tell them what was going on, my son walks out into the waiting room! They refused to triage him! Said he was 18 and he should be fine! I called his doctor and he went off...this is a very calm man. He called the head of the ER and insisted they triage him now! So, the nurse takes him back and starts telling me I should sue my doctor because my son didn’t need to be admitted and that there is nothing wrong with him. I was livid and it took three hours for him to finally see a cardiologist and when they saw his EMGs they admitted him immediately. He had an infection in his pericardium! He could have died.
I totally understand you being upset. You are an amazing advocate for Janice. Take care of her and yourself and get some rest.

Sadly based on Janiece's diagnosis in the hospital they were just trying to play god which is not okay. She truly had health concerns and they brushed it off as mental. Hopefully the health care system gets better because this was a horrible experience for anyone to go through.
I just find it interesting that so much energy goes into trying to prove to people that she's sick.
just seems like getting people to believe shouldn't be hard if she actually is sick. but hey, I guess most people who went to medical school just have an agenda to make sure you two don't get your aesthetic pics for insta uwu
Oof! I'm not an EMT or paramedic, but I'm a Wilderness First Responder and my best friend is an EMT, so I can definitely tell you that that was extremely unprofessional of them - not sure about EMTs (though I would assume so), but WFRs for sure are trained to ask other people in the person's group (if any) for information and take their word for it if the person is unable to speak, or at least not in a state to be answering questions themselves; often times in situations like that, WFRs will ask the patient the same questions, as it can also be a gauge for how "with it" the patient is and whether that improves or not (I'd have to ask my friend what the EMT equivalent is, as it's possible that they are trained to just go on what the person's caregiver/group says if the patient can't answer for themselves); however, we NEVER disregard what the patient (if they're able to speak) or caregiver/group says is going on; we do go through everything to make sure we don't miss anything else, and maybe help clarify, but either way, if we can't figure it out, we NEVER brush off what they say. And while I could see using Honey or Sweetie with a little kid, I would absolutely never do it with an adult - that's just condescending, and unless one of those responders was a friend of mine (in which case they wouldn't be doing it in the first place, because my 7 friends who are/have been EMTs/paramedics all know better), I would be intimidated by 3 men I don't know doing that to me, too, especially if I didn't have anyone there with me to back me up.
As for how fast ambulances can/should drive, my friend has told me that she's driven the ambulance at easily 90-100mph on open road lots of times, with lights and sirens blaring; if it's not imperative that they get to the ER ASAP, though, it's often fine for them to just go the speed limit (as long as that still gets them there fast enough), especially if they've got someone in another car following them (my parents were in that situation once, though my mom had to ask them to slow down so my dad could keep up without risking getting pulled over; granted, that was 20 years ago, so their training may have changed, though the one time I rode with someone in an ambulance, ~4 years ago, we just went the speed limit because it was close and it wasn't imperative to get there ASAP), with no lights or sirens. Either way, though, if Janiece needed to get to the ER fast (which it definitely sounds like she did), they ought to have been going faster than 30mph with the roads being what you described.
That had to have been awful, and I'm praying things improve for you soon.

My daughter had a similar emt experience at work at Epcot. She had a severe asthma attack and they told her she was just having an anxiety attack.
I'm sorry that someone could be so unprofessional in a critical moment. I am hoping and praying for you. It's bad enough that the paramedics acted as if you guys didn't know what you were saying when it came to your health care. The most important thing is to listen to the patient and not ever make someone who is in a critical moment feel like they aren't being heard and understood.
OMG Paul the paramedic story is very very strange....there is a place you can call or write to report the paramedics and the company if you feel better about doing it...sending lots of thoughts...love...prayers and virtual hugs to both of you...I hope you are a little better now....love you both from a very snowy and cold Pennsylvania💖🙏🏻

I hope that your doctor can resolve the symptoms that Janiece is experiencing. When you can you should send this video to the ambulance service company to show them what their customer service experience is like. I hope that Janiece recovers quickly.

The “it’s probably just anxiety” thing pisses me off so much. That’s one way to get me mad real quick! I could rant for hours on that! I have POTS along with several other chronic illnesses

Where I live the fire department would have been called in as well just to take her down the stairs safely and then she would be taken to the ER. I am so sorry that happened to you guys!!!

The calling me sweetie thing ticks me off. The only people that can call me sweetie are my husband and parents. Coming from anyone else it’s condescending, especially men. Some people don’t mean any harm when they say it but when they say it sarcastically 😡

The paramedics should have both genders on board! I know I wouldn't feel comfortable with three men sticking stickers under areas such as my boobs without a female present! What you and Janiece went through was uncalled for and I know what it is like to be talked down to like a kid and have on many occasions stood up for myself and told the parties involved to talk to me like a 48 year old and not like an 8 year old. Yes I very old.

Welcome to life with autonomic dysfunction. Our vitals do all kinds of crazy stuff!!!!!! EMT's really don't get it and sadly most drs don't either. Fluids help so much though. Hope Janiece gets to a more stable place soon. Obviously there is no cure for this stuff so I won't say "get well soon". We all know chronic illness doesn't get well! 😉

Make sure you file a thorough report with the fire department or whoever the ambulance was through. Those things are unacceptable. Even if you think that’s a waste of your time think of it this way. What it that had been worse? Life or death were seconds (not minutes) mattered. By filing that complaint you could save someone else’s life later on.

I would DEFINITELY send a letter to the fire department main office and your village/municipality and even your local trustee or councilman detailing exactly what transpired. Maybe even direct them to this video which was done very well..outlines your experience perfectly. It’s important they get this feedback because this may not be the first time they’ve acted this way towards a resident needing medical assistance in your community. The condescending/sexually troubling “sweetie” alone should be brought to their attention. Their hesitancy and being unprepared to bring her downstairs was a huge problem too. And diagnosing anxiety was very condescending. I understand why it might have taken them longer....they do need to make sure people they are transporting are stable before they start moving and it can seem like an eternity sometimes when you just want to get to the hospital. But their comments, dismissive attitude about “anxiety” and hesitancy in transporting her downstairs is definitely a cause for concern that should be brought to administration attention.
Honestly, I hate being called "honey" or "sweetie". And from someone who was in the back of an ambulance for everything ranging from an anxiety attack to my lungs are failing to do their job. Usually, they would run me 10 miles above the speed limit for the anxiety attack.

File a complaint against the ER company. If not I’m gonna call up companies down there and bitch them out. You don’t tell someone it’s anxiety and furthermore, you don’t ever sexually harass someone. That was sexual harassment, do NOT let it go.

I wish you guys all the best. I really recognize all that you are saying. It is apparently the same everywhere. When you know your body and know more than then the average person about medical issues and when you tell medical personnel what is going on they just seem to flip and do just the opposite of what you suggest. Really frustrating and dangerous. Most medical care workers don’t “like” being told what to do and they just do like you are wrong and they are being very arrogant. Why can’t people just accept and appreciate that you know your body and when you present your medical history be pleased with it? No they treat you like a psychological case!

If you call someone sweetie in a professional setting you are not professional. I would have been so uncomfortable if I was in that situation. I would have told the doctors as soon as i got the the hospital after the initial medical history and all that.
They also used sweetheart, honey while belittling her health concerns.

Just watched the vlog. Omg, these emts are so not educated in this. And 30mph? Are u serious? That is sooooo slow. Omg, and they were asking janiece these same question? That is crazy. She is the one who is out of it. These people r soooo stupid uneduacated people and to call the patient honey? Thats a big no no. What the.... sorry that u had to go thru that.
It was a difficult situation that Janiece was put in and that should never happen to anyone.
