One thing that has been really valuable about this to me is it gives a super clear frame of reference for how Quinns plays games and therefore how that informs his reviews.
To some extent thats just the system he's using here. Its a FITD system (forged in the dark) which is _designed_ to be narrative driven in exactly the way he is using it here. It literally doesn't have the rules for battlemaps or anything, its entirely focused on the narrative. I'm not sure if it shows his playstyle as much as it shows his preference for this style of game system.
@@hexlart8481 Accurate! I try and GM in the way the system or module wants me to. But I for sure have a preference for RPGs that are a little more narrative than they are problem-solving. Then I try and stuff my players into a narrative problem.
I'm so utterly impressed that Gareth never had to pull the plug on this not being canon, and that Quinns so clearly loves the world of Citizen Sleeper that it honestly just kind of felt like a part of the game. This genuinely made me cry it was a great session.
It's not that risky though. Gareth's the one playing the sleeper. So the majority of things that could be canon-breaking are under his control. And outside of specific narrative conventions relating to the functioning of the sleepers - the game is set in an enormously large and diverse interstellar setting that could allow for a lot of different kinds of stories and people.
Its a great idea but your character then just falls into the troupe of being a literal chore bot. Picking up groceries. Cleaning tasks. Baby sitting. You are a one in a billion unique character that can expire or be hunted or save millions at any second and your task is to go pick mushrooms.
@@crushingit5128 I think it's a bit like being a shaman. You perform seemingly small and simple looking tasks, but behind the scenes you're helping the world run in a proper direction.
I love Actual Plays, it's both a great way of learning game systems and vicariously living through getting to play. I'm disabled, have extreme anxiety even in groups made for people who are looking for groups, and struggle to maintain both social bonds and a schedule, so even though I love RPGs, I'm not build to have the option. So thank you, Quinn, I've been super excited to see how you play and it did not disappoint.
That's a Friends at the Table Shirt! Wooooooooooooo. We could have made them look like anything, but we made them look like us. Ah damn, Quinn just called it out. I swear I knew it before!
they have done an interview with austin walker before !! it’s fascinating ! both are big fans of the other it’s amazing to see two people talk and ask questions stemming from being fans of the othrr
@@anedaneran5666 Nobody does it like the Table Friends! (if anyone reading this hasn't tried their show, maybe start with "Partizan" for some epic mecha-SciFi :D)
As someone entrenched in the 5e mindset, I like the idea of seeing some actual play videos with the games you review, so we can see them "in action", to know what the tone is, how the gameplay "should" look (which I know is subjective) etc.
I've been following the citizen sleeper account on twitter for quite some time, so when I randomly clicked on a video that they linked, I did NOT expect to be jumpscared by the same guy who recommends me board games
All the positive things people are saying are true. There's also the art and music and editing that's added greatly to this. With the music, I had to resist returning to The Eye in that empty container or failing Bliss on that last job by just two successes because something urgent came up midway; the heavy swallowing of that failure and carrying on.
Really cool to see how The Quinn runs games, and a very fun watch overall! Incredibly dark for all the right reasons, really well played with just the right amount of humour, just really nice all round.
Citizen Sleeper is one of my favorite games, so seeing this pop up out of nowhere was so shocking and amazing. I loved watching it and everyone was so amazing in it, and taking a peek behind the hood of the universe was such a treat. Running my first CBR+PNK tonight set in the Netrunner universe.
As someone that absolutely adored Citizen Sleeper, I had a great time with this new slice of the world and the group's engagement with the major themes of the series (bodies and labor, toxic systems and how to survive/escape them, etc.)
Citizen Sleeper is a game I have finished one ending, and am still recovering emotionally, one of the best and most uniquely designed games I’ve ever played
I have to say. This is the best Actual play I've ever seen ♥️ It still has the roughness and real emotions so it feels like a real rpg at my table. So so easy to relate and love all you dear players and of course the marvel of a GM, Quinns. Thank you!
Oh GOD that ending... i dont even know how to describe the facial expressions I made and the noises that came out of my mouth. ...thanks for another amazing QQ video! Probably time for me to check out the patreon...
Citizen Sleeper was a real surprise for me when I played it. I had no idea what to expect. It is incredible. Probably the most human game I've ever played.
OH SHIT I wanted to run CBR+PNK ages ago, I didn't realize this was gonna be an actual play of that system when I clicked on the video! Very hyped now :D
Wow, this is incredible. Citizen Sleeper is one of, if not my favorite game of all time and I consider it one of the most effective pieces of Cyberpunk fiction ontop of just an incredibly well and tightly designed game. So getting to watch the Creator roleplay in that universe? I am so excited.
Citizen Sleeper made me cry. I'm not ashamed to admit it, I welled up, spilled tears, sobbed, wiped them away while credits rolled and thought about it for weeks.
This was great Quinns. I hope you consider doing more of these one shot "actual plays" in the future. I re-discovered ttrpgs back in 2020 partly thanks to the SU&SD podcast, and you doing this channel now is like you are going with me along the way on this new adventure. It's awesome. Thank you for what you do, which is so needed in a hobby saturated by D&D 5E.
Citizen sleeper was my game of the year and it wasn't close. I was actually working on a citizen sleeper inspired setting for my next TTRPG world so I couldn't be more excited to see this in my feed.
This was absolutely fantastic! Please consider doing more! The story was amazing, the players and GM thoughtful and caring, and it is so refreshing to see such a different approach to running games than a lot of popular series. (Also, as a XR dev myself I'm curious what Rob worked on now...)
The discussion about the butterfly reminded me of an early episode of the The Expanse, where there was a bird flying in low gravity - occasionally flapping and mostly floating.
An amazing crossover for an amazing game. And it CBR PNK happens to be a game I've acquired so it is great to see it played. AND Also It is super cool and informative to see how you DM. 10/10 for exactly the kind of video I didn't know I needed
It would be cool if you shared the Citizen Sleeper sheets that you made! But also yes of course we want actual plays on this channel, especially with the incredible lighting and production design you've managed.
I must say: I can't wait for the next TTRPG review to be uploaded. I have big hopes on Brindlewood Bay and Bluebeard's Bride - but I'm up for whatever game you decide to show us. Everything will be fine
I wish I could get this as audio because I'd love to see citizen sleeper played (I backed) but it's easier to check long things like actual plays using my phone while I walk my dog.
Yes love it. Would love more videos Quinns. Would also love to see you do some lets plays of some indie video games. I know Cool ghosts was a thing and isn't any more, but watching you do some Slay the Spire runs or playing some Into the Breach would be great. Excellent man.
This is so damn cool and you're the most pleasant GM I've ever watched play a TTRPG. Im also not much into Actual Play, maybe for the same reasons as you, or maybe not. Maybe I don't enjoy the excesive theatricallity of the ones I saw or maybe I wasn't a fan of the approach on many of the channels I watched. Perhaps it makes me overthink how I'm gonna play in the future. That being said, I loved your approach and the players were also fantastic. What a source of inspiration. Cheers!!!!
Yes! Yes I do enjoy seeing Actual Plays on Quinns Quest! However, I mostly prefer to take on my Actual Play content while I'm doing other things, normally through Spotify to save data and battery on my phone. So, if you wanted to make these more of a thing, then I would love it if they were posted somewhere where they could be easily accessible.
Quinn, ff you don't do an actual play for a Mothership some day, I will end up just a teeny tiny bit sad about it and I'd hate for that guilt to weigh on your conscience
I'm absolutely giddy for Cycles of the Eye to come out, but I also kinda wish Gareth had steered in this kind of direction more. Rather than a solo game rehashing a lot of the stories and characters of Erlin's Eye, I want to see a TRPG that really explores the Helion system and is built for a group to play. I'll probably homebrew smth like that once I have my hands on Cycles of the Eye and can dissect it and other Citizen Sleeper media a bit more.
Quinns, suck my money! Love this format! Where's the 'support' button? I'd gladly pay 10$ monthly. Nobody else would make AP of rare rpgs. Regards from Poland.
As a GM wanna be, is there a place where I could use other GM's story skeleton to practice and learn? Like I would love to run this story because I watched this play and got a lot of good ideas for techniques!
One thing that has been really valuable about this to me is it gives a super clear frame of reference for how Quinns plays games and therefore how that informs his reviews.
Definitely. I can tell he is very invested in building narrative arcs and can see why he doesn't have patience for something like Lancer
