I am a Brazilian citizen who never visited Ilha da Madeira, but I have a deep emotional involvement with it. My father use to say -"I slipped out on the Madeira Island" (-"Eu escapuli na ilha da Madeira"), and here is the fascinating story. My grandparents were quite "old", when they married in Recife (Pernambuco state), Brazil in 1922, my grandmother Flora was 45, and my grandfather Aurelio was 44. For obvious reasons, they never intended to have children, but, during their honeymoon in Madeira, my grandmother became pregnant with my father, Caio, who was born on May 2nd 1923 from a normal birth after a perfectly normal pregnancy. Needless to say, for a woman who was 45 in 1923 to have her first child without a single problem during pregnancy is nothing short of a miracle. Curiously, my father had his first child (my brother) in 1943 at twenty, so, my grandparents, who in their mid 40s never dreamed of having a child, became grandparents at a relatively "normal" age in their mid 60s. This year my father would turn 100, so, maybe I should pay a visit to Madeira Island to celebrate his life and miraculous birth, for, for if it wasn't for that miracle I wouldn't be here telling this story.
I just finished Finnegan's great (great!) book BARBARIAN DAYS - a must read for all surfers - where he writes extensively (and intensively) about Madeira and this wave - so good to see it on film. Nice work!👏
I first surfed it in the early 1990's. There was one Portuguese surfer living on the island only. I had no idea what had been surfed and what hadn't. It was quite an experience getting used to the way the waves break so close to the shore and getting in and out took a bit of balls. One day I paddled out in what I believe became known as bone crushers. The swell built from double overhead to triple in an hour. The only way out was to catch a wave and then risk getting in over the boulders or paddle around the headland. I found another spot down some huge cliffs the fishermen told me it was where the sharks were seen most frequently. I thought it was 3 to 4 ft till I got down to the bottom to be shocked at sold 8 to 10 ft. My last trip was many years ago with no surf shops but a few surfers had started to live there. What an amazing place I bet its crouded now. I surfed an 8ft and 7'8" gun in those days.
I'm born and raised in California. My father was born in the Algarve and I got to spend about a month this summer surfing in Portugal and visiting family, man it was special. I hope to get the opportunity to live in Portugal. It's beautiful and the people are some of the nicest and most welcoming in the world.
Same here. I just returned from Portugal last night. Absolutely love the Algarve and especially Sagres. Waves were really fun and I can't wait to go back.
As ondas da Madeira não são para todos os níveis de surf... São adequadas para quem tem um nível de bom para cima. Madeira's waves are not for all surfing levels... They are suitable for those with a good level and up.
Wow, what a slice of Heaven!!! As a road cyclist of 4.5 decades, a sports car enthusiasts(even the road surfaces look awesome) & always dreamed of becoming a surfer...I'm ready to pack-up All my toys & move!!! Thanks, happy surfing!!!
Thank you for sharing about such a beautiful place. I didn't know about that place, and despite the fact that there are many people who don't want other surfers to know more places so don't get 'crawded ', I feel that all surfers have the right to surf all the waves in the world. What a good Trip!!!
I respectfully disagree with this statement " I feel that all surfers have the right to surf all the waves in the world." While yes, at it's core any surfer could go to a surf spot and paddle out but do they have the "right" to do so? I say no. There's a hierarchy in the water for the people that are locals to an area and as a visitor we should show respect to the them by maybe not just paddling out wherever we please. For instance if I rolled up on one of these spots in Madeira and there's 4 to five guys surfing a reef break with a tight takeoff zone I would either go do some exploring, wait and see if a couple guys get out, or talk to people that not only are surfing but make friends with a dude fishing on the beach ask him about the area, and the spot. Please don't take this wrong Pineapple Surf cause I do get what your saying but I experience it more and more where I will be surfing a spot and there's 2, 3 , 4 different paddle out options within 200 yards of me and I'll have a couple guys paddle out right on top of me because they think it's their right to do so. I'm not saying that this is you, but surfers should defer to whomever was surfing the spot first. Whether they were there first by birth or if they just got up earlier than anyone else. I apologize in advance if I misread the intent of your statement.
I am lucky enough to live here, in Jardim do Mar. I don't surf but I have met a lot of surfers, from all over the world. Some of the waves are absolutely stunning. By the way, my mother-in-law (Cecilia from Cecilia's house) says "hi to everyone" :)
That young dude - Yes bro, a young guy who's learning to use his rail 👍 Too many kids are good at airs but not carves these days, I see a bright future for you dude 👍
I hope your exposure of this place for all its beauty is not ultimately destroyed by the people that will now swarm the place like so many other once lovely quaint places on earth that have been trashed by tourism by way of crowds, real estate prices inflating to drive to locals out, the displacement of their culture and the places identity , inevitable overdevelopment etc. You should Not share places like this with the worlds hoards regardless of how opportunistic the attraction to tourism enterprises for a few selfish individuals to capitalise on it. You are naive to the damage to the happy content locals that your actions could deliver to their lives. Stop doing this type of thing and take down the vid for their sake and just be satisfied with experience you have had individually before you do more harm.
Hi Nic, I went to Madeira once, to play there with 'Blasted Mechanism' in a Festival. The water had the most beautiful Turquoise Blue I've ever seen. We also rented a car to go around the Island, so we did vist the places you show in the video! Thank you for sharing!
Great content Nic! you are a great Surfer and Portuguese ambassador, I work at Lisbon Surf House and School and we are always promoting the great content you make, taking so gratefully about what Portugal has to offer, thanks and good waves for you!
Really enjoyed watching through this one Nic Maybe because it's Christmas and just got home with beer and snack's [laughs] There are some very beautiful places on this earth you got perfect conditions, thank you for the post.. This place is outstanding. Very special.
Nice video. I loved Madeira. Only thing is landing there is scary! It kinda does remind me of old world Hawaii. But it’s a lot richer culturally…people more set into their life and customs, and are grateful. Portugal is a beauty indeed.
Sad to hear that’s the end of the series. Really great place to finish off with. Will have to visit soon, hope to see more footage like that. Thx Nic 🤙🏼
Good work! Keep posting videos and see if next year you've managed turn this place into another Bali, Australia or Hawaii... Even more, let's see if all the digital nomads from Northern Europe start to travel, with their salaries that triple those of the Portuguese locals, making it impossible for them to live on their own island because of the rising prices of accommodation, food and transport. Yes sir, we are going to destroy another "virgin" site to set up another tourism and surfing paradise. It is good to promote some tourism, but a sustainable tourism. It's not about gaining more followers in exchange for f*cking up an entire island by encouraging 50,000 surfers desperate to "live the experience and surf new waves", but without the head to try to maintain the purity of the site.... Let's go for a coffee for 7 euros! Let's go surf with 50 other people in the water! You know, you can enjoy it but keep it a little bit lower, it's quite easy. Let the people find their own waves, their own rides. Simply disappointing and embarrassing to see how this sanctuary of the atlantic will start to cease to be... little by little .... ce la vie madeira
I honestly can't belive it, the greed and total disrespect to everything that surfing should be. Total sell out, its mind-blowing. Orlando is the same, gets payed to promote the place but is a total asshole to anyone that goes there and doesn't pay him to be their surf guide or is a pro from Portugal. There's going to be a load of people on soft tops getting slammed into all the sea defences next season. should have probably mentioned that its probably more dangerous than Hawaii and there's no lifeguards to help when your getting nailed into the massive concrete sea walls. What a shit show man, really sad.
Hello there mate. Chill. Jardim do Mar has been known since the early '90s and my mother-in-law (Cecilia) was the first one to host surfers. Actually, Miguel Fortes used to stay here, and now so did his son. There's always a place for more surfers and quite often, I see amazing waves here in Jardim, Paul do Mar, or Ponta Pequena...and no one out there, surfing.
Is this the spot that William Finnegan wrote about in Barbarian Days?? i dont remember but if so it is cool to see it now as compared to how he described it in his book.
How interesting. I wonder how long The Portugese were occupying these islands and, if there was any history of travelling to America. Looking art my map of The World, one day, I would love to do a mathematical study, to evaluate The World circumference at different latitudes.
Great video 👍🏻 Madeira is awesome 😍 a perfect place for us filmmakers 🎥 I was there in october this year with my mini 3 pro and my ZV1 and uploaded three short clips 😅 best cinematic greetings from germany
Nick, you appear to be a super cool guy and I love watching your content, but these Back to Back videos are going to blow up your local Portugese breaks. Try to keep it low key and under the radar, protect these surf spots for yourself and for your friends... Its awesome you are promoting Portugese tourism, and I think that is wonderful for the country, but doing it for the sake of culture and not surfing, would be a much wiser route. This last video will likely guarantee 2 times as many surfers in the water out on this magical island in the middle of the Atlantic. Wishing you all the best. Keep after it! Enjoy...
