- Ericeira is the first European World Surfing Reserve for well more than one reason. If seven waves are identified as making up the Reserve, there are at least a dozen more worth riding spread around these seven jewels. For this second episode of Portugal Back-to-Back, Nic Von Rupp teams up with Portuguese World Tour rider, Frederico “Kikas” Morais, and a bunch of other European surfing aces, to tackle some pointbreak bombs during a perfect session at Coxos, before paying a visit to the charming fishing village that in recent years has become the surfing epicenter of the Old Continent.

Had a great holiday there a few years ago, Surfed every day & eat & drank like a king. On the smaller days the beachie Foz was sick fun.

Love Ericeira, been there 3 times for extended periods. Great waves but still has that old fisherman village vibe. Great food and culture too. When it was big I used to stand on the rocks and watch cave, sometimes 3 spits on 1 wave. Heavy does not even describe it!!! My only complaint is that some of the spots get crowded and quite a lot of localism. I understand if you have a kook from Germany but if you can see a guy can surf, give him some waves..... I avoided the really crowded spots and would rather surf waves then be in the water and watch other guys surf waves for 2 hours.
I'm here now and it is as crowded with new folks and surf schools, more than any place I have been. The Localism is can be as heavy as the waves. Fingers crossed Pedra wakes up a bit more.

There 50 years ago. Lived in a tent. Only about 12 surfers there in vans, mostly US and Oz. There was one Portuguese surfer in all of the country. 2 visiting Brazilians.

I was lucky enough to surf in Cascais on a random winter swell that somehow hit it. It was only 3-4 but it was 10-12 that day in Ericeira; we stayed down south because the winds were too gnarly in Ericeira and Cascais was nearly empty and wind protected. I wish we had at least scoped the area because it looks absolutely amazing. That whole area including Lisbon is like the best parts of San Francisco and San Diego combined, but half the price. God I miss it.
This kind of review is exactly what I want to hear! I used to live in SF and also loved the SD waves. We’re living in Japan now but will one day retire in Portugal ❤
It's not half the price anymore, it's ridiculous expensive, the local people are all forced to leave their own houses.
You have to try Ericeira one day, you won't regret it

Looking forward to spending a month there this June or July. I have to be honest and admit I had no idea what a surf Mecca Portugal is. I spent quite a bit of time in Europe including touring for 2 to 3 months a year when I was in a punk band (cause for alarm). Would have definitely had some stops in Portugal and brought my board if I knew about the surf!

A went there for years in the late 90’s and the place was ……. Desert !
Never was desert not so many paparucos like know but that is because of the surf schools but is good For the local community as well so hope you enjoy that time like me 30 years ago

Don't come to Portugal!! It's so overcrowded, no one can enjoy the landscape anymore because it is all full!!! In the water, in the coffees, on the streets.. In summer you feel like you can not breathe anymore. You don't see nature anymore, you just see gigantic, disgusting cube house. Surfing in Ericeira can be better compared to Martial Arts. And then don't forget all the rich people from Lisbon flooding the streets with huge SUVs that block this cute small fisher village.. ERICEIRA SOLD OUT
Is that right ? when i was a kid we use to stay for weeks on Ericeira's beach doing nothing but surf , it was no buildings , nobody was surfing and coxos was not even discovered , everyday an old man was coming to cook for us a grilled chicken using the wheel of a bike for barbecue and after the surf we were getting drunk with him on vino verde , it was great !

Really awesome made and awesome footage but this is really bad for Portugal. Its the same with all those articles in the US ‘selling’ Portugal like its the European version of California. Its just really bad for the Portuguese people and I feel that this is not the right thing to do. Portugal need good people for developing the country, but all these promotions feels like putting Portugal is for sale or something. Great vid. Whinges get over yourselves. There’s 23 million surfers on this planet. I’ve surfed Ericeira, mostly I met lovely people (one idiot surf instructor on his lunch break, won’t mention the beach.) I’m going to surf my local break this afternoon and if I meet strangers I’ll ask them where they’re from pass the time of day and share waves with them.

Sorry for being that guy, but man, so over promoted the place and country, getting, more, more, more expensive and crowded, I recently saw a Tatiana Weston Webb interview saying where she lives in Hawai, locals don't do Instagram, You Tube, etc so they can protect the place, but well 💸💸🤑
Younhave never seen a video part or a picture with the label of where she is from. That’s one reason why I moved there 20 years ago to wait tables a land surf. It’s mostly because the waves there are crap lol
