My fellow DM, that is just part of the official mechanic in Pendragon (which, to be fair, is a game about playing as dynasties) 😂 I have to tell players to be damn clear if a romantic encounter does NOT risk pregnancy, otherwise the game litterally asumes that there could be a new bastard next year 😆

My partner sent me this and I was surprised it made it here. I’m the Eris in this story (fake name, obviously). It happened over a year and a half, and I adored the other players. I’ve seen a few comments underneath asking why my partner didn’t defend me- it’s because I defended myself. Any time a woman joke came up, I’d fight the NPCs for my own honour. I confronted the DM as well after all of this with confirmation I wasn’t being crazy. I am on the spectrum and I’m often told I overreact, so I wanted to handle this delicately otherwise I could have lost the friends I made during the shit show :) it’s nice to see everyone being so kind about it though
I really hope after this, you at least put some distance on this dm because he did tell you straight up what he thinks and knows what he is trying to do on you.

The story is likely fake. Nobody goes through that amount of unwelcome fetishism and still be unsure enough about what's going on to keep playing without establishing boundaries or having to ask the internet if they are the a-hole.

Sounds to me like the DM tries to force his kink on the players, has a crush on Eris and a sexist view of what a woman should and shouldn't do. All of that in combination makes for a true nightmare.
I also had a character lose arm in an important plot point, then played for 4-5 sessions with one arm with some cool RP, and then DM gave us a quest reward - one use something that would restore my character's arm, but it was around the point when he accepted himself as he is and refused that
I'm playing Pathfinder with friends of mine, and we're exploring Abomination Vaults. We met some ghouls, and they asked for flesh sacrifice. My friend playing swashbuckler immediately gave up his entire left arm and is currently running around with Nero's devil breaker.
Reminds me of my sorcerer who was blinded due to a curse. I really liked it to be honest, the DM wanted it to be reversible but I felt if he just had sight again it'd be kinda lame, so i asked if he could be considered legally blind and here we are still! He uses his walking stick as a spellcasting focus now. Personally i feel like taking away a character's disability is kinda meh, just feels like a boring way to deal with it, we're playing D&D! We can have magical prosthetics, magical wheelchairs, magical hearing aids, magical service animals, magical mobility tools, magical canes for the blind, you name it! Obviously, it's all up to what the players and DM feel like, but personally i just think that finding a new solution is more fun than reversing to what it was before, yk?

As a DM for a very not-DnD rp world, with absolutely no knowledge of DnD itself, even I know that player agency is one of the most sacred aspects of RP that must be respected.. It's why you must be very delicate with anything that effects it.. Of the 400+ encounterable enemy NPC's in my world, less than 10 of them have anything remotely related to mind-control, or direct mind-altering abilities. Also.. As someone whom is quite expert in all things lewd, I can say without a shadow of a doubt, this DM has a kink.. A very distinct and certain kink, and he is very stubbornly trying to push it onto his players.. Specifically pregnancy, and incest.. I've played in, and experienced enough to know it when I see it.
Basically, everyone gets the final say for what they are in charge of. The players on their characters' actions, and the DM on literally everything else. A DM stealing control from a player is like a player stealing control from the DM
It's a very stereotypical Magical Realm moment. I try to avoid describing Evard's Black Tentacles for the same reason. To add to the agency of the players, I typically plan to work in character's backstories when I DM, so the players can get experience DMing with their backstories for a session or two. This is probably because I enjoy both DMing and playing, but I've never really implemented it properly, unfortunately. General Sam's Dying of Laughter was a really big inspiration in this regard, as was Kikoskia's various sessions, but scheduling kills all games eventually. I also tend to have a pretty lax "mutual storytelling" philosophy of DMing too but I've also never had players that are bad about losing either. Workplace TTRPG are a "not even once" line for me tbh too.

I played a blacksmith using spheres of might (pathfinder) who lost his leg to a rusty bear trap. More like the foot, but he opted to lop off his leg from below the knee down. You know what the dm asked? "Are you sure? You don't have to lose the limb. We can figure something out." I created automail. Metal magical leg. Ended up losing an arm as well. Turned it into a metal arm with a built in shield. It was fantastic.

Sounds like the rabbitfolk artificer in the campaign I'm in. Lost an arm to let the party succeed at a major plot point, but quickly replaced it with what amounted to a Swiss army arm.

I genuinely worry I'm a terrible DM after pretty much every session, even though my players tell me consistently they have a good time and really appreciate how I take in their input and everything. Stories like this reassure me that I am, BARE MINIMUM, above average as a DM. Lord have mercy.

You have to understand that beeing a DM is not beeing a god ruling over some players, as a DM you are an entertainer. That can sounds lame but a good DM will make the experience better than any movies or video games ever made. If a movie sucks, you don't blame the spectator for not enjoying it. Same here. And making something no players want to be part in IS a no no. Doesn't mean you can't kill characters or whatever. But when you have constantly players telling you something feels wrong about a part of the game, and that part is not build in the main story or a crutial part of the game mechanic... THEN GET RID OF IT! No Gms are perfects, you have the right to make mistake, but actually knowing your players boundaries and knows how to run a game with consideration for those limits will actually makes you a better DM. Gosh, it might even show the others how crazy your imagination can be knowing you had to delt with so many stop signs ;)

I've had a character forced to be pregnant by a dm before (turns out the DM didn't like my replacement character after his dmpc killed my first character, but that's a separate-ish issue). I basically left the session, crying/enraged, and my wife and I left the group not long after. Wasn't worth it. I'm truly horrified that this type of situation has happened to others. I hope they have a better DM now.
A player in a campaign I DM wanted to retire his character a while ago to play a new character. We had his character leave while everyone was sleeping. I spoke to the player about it to get approval before I finalized it and he gave me the OK. IMO, that’s how it should be done. Talk to the player beforehand and if they say no, then accept it and work with the player to figure out something else. The ultimate fate of this character is currently unknown and I’m gonna leave it that way for now.

Maybe he was good at manipulating? And more experienced players acted like this was normal, so two new players thought it was normal? Plus, there are plenty of biases which cause people to stay in toxic relationships, like in this case other players. Studies have also found that if people have to humiliate themselves they tend to like things they tried to get more than if they weren't humiliated.
Lots of reasons. Crab mentions some of them in the video, but if other elements of the game are genuinely good (the other players, the parts of the game not revolving around DMs issues), then its tolerable-ish.
the mental illness thing is in the indefinite madness table. i’ve had to have words with a dm about it before because a character was given a tic from that table and i thought it was in appropriate to roleplay. the dm and party all agreed and we dropped it and moved on.
Not related to this exact video... But I do want to thank Critcrab for giving voice to our D&D horror stories. It got me to share my one and only D&D horror story on Reddit, and to share my wish to reclaim my character from the fate that had been thrust upon him. A call that a passing DM granted, giving my character a chance to find a happy ending. A DM that I am now dating, because it turns out we're unbelievably compatible on so many levels. So thank you, Critcrab! In a manner of speaking, you helped make that happen. :)
I wouldn't have a problem with a DM throwing out the idea of my character developing a mental condition but letting me choose if I feel like it could make for an interesting plot. Forcing it is wrong though, like if the DM wants to dictate what's going on in a character's head they might as well dictate everything the characters do, ergo they might play by themselves.
The DM, Kyle, is literally projecting onto her character what he wants for her: to separate her from the friend group and particularly her partner in order to have control over her. Grotesque.
I have played brother/sister characters with my husband in the past but that was not forced on us by anyone else. In my game group your family tree is considered to be completely under the player's control unless you take the "Unknown Parent" disadvantage.
I will say, I'm completely new to running games myself, and the only time I've ever taken away a player's agency was for a joke I wanted to pull. It was harmless and essentially involved using a mischievous/wild card element of the group(it was already canon by this point that the ranger's swarm are devious little things in the group and the ranger themselves were asleep), so the swarm went to move the one PC that had slept outside into a tent that was recently filled with leaves and other stuff in the forest. Of course I let them wake up at this and everyone had fun trying to get the barbarian(the one who'd been sleeping in the tree) down from where the swarm was holding them. Everyone started cackling when I told them all what was happening, even the player whose character was being moved from their tree. Not sure if this may have been a bit far or not, but nobody seemed upset and all had a good laugh about it.
Your observation about how the issue was soread out with Skilled DMing between is probably accurate. I had a DM like that. They were skilled at their system, but there were issues that, when they became too close together, made me reflect on the game and realize how awful they were. I still remember how even just One Off situations had people telling me to leave the table, including my best friend who knew nothing of ttrpgs but saw me so distressed. I didn’t listen for MONTHS until I was forced to be away for over a month due to health complications and I realized just how much it had been affecting me. I’m 2.3 years free, and have gone 6 months without flinching at the very sound of that DM’s name.
I mean, there are rules and tables for inflicting madness as a temporary or indefinite debuff in the DMG, as well as long term injuries/disabilities... I just don't think they're used very often. Getting a character or NPC pregnant can also be a neat or useful plot point. I've used all of these mechanics in games I've run, WITH PLAYERS CONSENT. The main issue is the DM just deciding that he's interested in these things and forcing them upon the players, especially when the players express disinterest, or worse, outright discomfort. (As well as whatever personal relationship stuff he seems to be taking out on them) Like, you just gotta say "Hey, I had an idea, what if explored ___ happening to your character, and here are some theoretical rules for it, would you be interested?" and be willing to accept no for an answer, and be willing to compromise and adjust with feedback along the way to make sure it works out.
Wanted to be her bf, but also had a "mothering" fixture, treating then like children? This guy had an odd collection of fetishes. I can only assume that these were relatively isolated incidents that built up over time, which is how they were willing to put up with the DM and stay in the game(s) as long as they did.
My character was in a very toxic relationship (in dnd) and that was started due to my excitment of a new campaign and I was making crazy choices. Recently I've been deeply regretting that decision and my DM was so amazing he helped figure out a way to safelt break off the relationship instead of forcing me to go further into it.
My first experience playing pathfinder was in a group that was WAY too big, filled with new players to TTRPGs, not just Pathfinder, and had me and my girlfriend at the time. The DM VERY CLEARLY didn't like me because I was dating her and she knew he was trying to get with her. She told him no, straight up, but he kept trying. That, and he would make every effort to not only contrive situations to seperate our characters (I literally never got to meet her character in game, and we weren't planning on dating in character anyways), but also would put me, and the few players I was able to travel with suffer in tough fights and also inflicted some kind of curse on my character that was slowly turning them into some sort of frog creature. Needless to say I didn't stay in that campaign past 3 sessions. This was all over 10 years ago and now I just look at it in absolute confusion. Had I more time, I probably could flesh this out into a whole story but my break is over and I've got to go back to work.

I made a sort of edgelord warlock character whos patron is an evil goddess that he summond just to be edgy, but she just treats him like a kid, checking in on him, asking him if he’s making friends, and embarrassing him at random whenever he trys to be broody
I'm gonna be honest, as soon as the DM says, 'oh yeah you're pregnant because spirits/ancestors or something.' I'd stand up and go, 'No. That is not what we're doing. This is MY character. You run the game, I'll handle my character, thanks.' Or, I'd leave. Because what the Hell is this story. I'm glad he was ultimately kicked out of the group.

Have to say, that's the first time I have heard of a DM forcing gay status on a pc, usually it's the other way around in these horror stories where the DM gets freaked out by finding out a pc is gay.
The “your character has ADHD” scene made me think of a video I saw reading a tumblr post that mentioned the table agreed one of the characters had ADHD due to certain rolls. A similar thing happened to another character who constantly failed perception rolls so it was agreed the character needed glasses If the player wants a character to have trauma from events, then the character now has trauma. I’m fine with characters suffering mental wounds from the game’s events as long as the player is also okay with it.
This reminds me of a highschool dnd club story from the day i and the actual dms were not available. The dms so took over, and the next day on the bus ride to the school, i heard that a player had gotten r***** by a wolf and the sub dm said "roll for pregnant" We were obviously for the time teens, but like. Jesus christ Everyone grew past it, but it still lingers in my mind that this happened
Because all your other great friends are at the table and the girl in this situation has said that she had slight Autism and had a fear of overreacting over nothing. Essentially they felt social pressured into staying even without anyone social pressuring them.

Mental health issues should only be controlled by the player or inflicted on the player with their consent. Mental health has been a very fun plot point for a character in the past and a therapuetic way to express similar issues I have in a safe environment. The DM, however, should never say a player cannot do something. At the end of the day, it's the players choice on how effected they are mentally, outside of combat related effects.
I don't understand why people tolerate these bad DMs or players. Anytime I listen to one of these stories, I find myself saying "I would've called the offending person a degenerate, and left immediately, cutting all contact".
See, and I'm over here all, "So you have an NPC that is checking out the women walking by me? That's Fine. Because I am pretty sure that I stated at no time that MY CHARACTER was doing anything like that." I'm willing to get confrontational about my characters and what problems they may have or what they are doing. This crap about PTSD, I'd be all, so my character has a +1 STR? That's fantastic. And if they continued, keep adding bonuses. Unless the player is okay with changes made, as a DM you can't make them. It's the player's character, not the DM's character.
We have lots of psychological and physical traumas in our stories with my group, but those are always discussed and there's more often than not a possibility to fix these things.
I’ve had players ditch a character and tell me the character was now “mine,” in which case I just use them as an NPC, but even if the character survives the story I still ask the player what they want for that character’s future at the end of the game.
I've inflicted permanent debuffs on player characters, but I felt it was justified. I had a War Cleric or something that charged people to heal them. He was often a tight wad and would go out of his way to squeeze NPCs and other players for cash. The final nail in the coffin was when he caused the death of a Father and Son NPC over a few gold. I forget how now, but he lost his holy symbol and I told him he couldn't use his spells until he went to a temple and got another one. There he had to commune with his God, who informed him he was disappointed by his greedy behavior and would only restore his power on a condition from that point forward 10% of any wealth or treasure he finds is donated to the church. In order to make sure he followed through it was used as a curse and the money just magically vanishes from his inventory. Another player was constantly eating stuff he found laying around, so I left a cursed meat out that would turn the person who ate it in to a Tortle permanently. Ironically a different player ate it and they loved the change.
On the flip side, I ran a small story that was based off of HP Lovecraft's Reanimator series and at the end I told everyone who played due to the amount of carnage they've witnessed they are now immune to fear.

the thing is, its not even bad to have a fetish like that (speaking as a woman) - its when you force it onto others that's the problems. And judging by the way he forced traditional feminine roles on her and PUNISHED HER for miscarrying (an experience thats incredibly heartbreaking and traumatizing for plenty of pregnant people, and absolutely not their fault when it happens)?? He certainly seems like one of those people who have very traditional and conservative views when it comes to women and probably uses it as a form of control. all in all, disgusting.
All these horror stories I've listened to. I'm glad I've run into and made friends with fantastic nerds that check-in together to make sure everyone is comfortable with the status quo. Even my first long running campaign back in college had limits.
That DM just makes my skin crawl... Maybe it's because of my own personal beliefs that I refuse to compromise even for the sake of games, but the moment he started trying to force pregnancies & other weird stuff on player characters, I'd be gone & trying to put as much physical distance between that DM & myself as possible. Like recently, near the beginning of a 2-year long Rifts campaign, since my character was the only human female character in the party, the DM had a male water elemental offer to help the party if my character (who like me, is Sapphic & on the Aro/Ace spectrum) would "do a favor" for him. I had my character not only refuse, but also rant, in character, to the rest of the party about why was it that the Sapphic demisexual be getting all the unwanted attention from dudes, and that the next dude that tried to get into her pants would be taking a fire bolt straight to his manhood. The DM thankfully got the hint, and no other NPCs made any sort of advances towards my character.
See, a great GM could take that into account and possibly give you a fun arc with a villain who thinks he's Sune's gift to women. There is nothing more satisfying than taking down a villain who you hate personally as well as professionally.
Oh he managed to do just that, but for the entire party: The "Dragon" to the BBEG of the campaign managed to earn my character & the rest of the party's undying hatred due to his habit of showing up, attacking the party, mind controlling at least one person in the party into doing something terrible (i.e. he successfully mind controlled the dragon hatchling into burninating an entire neighborhood & my character into killing a fellow party member), followed by teleporting away like a little bitch when he was almost dead. Interrupting him mid-villain monologue at the beginning of the final battle against him & the BBEG by initiating a spell cast (for a spell that makes you damn near immune to magic, psionics & poison) was one of the personal highlights of the campaign for my character, and the entire party was rather happy when the BBEG prevented him from teleporting away like usual (due to mind controlling him to use as a meat shield against us), allowing us to finally give him his just desserts shortly before we took out the BBEG.

My long time friend likes to tell the story of the time she was in a superhero campaign and decided to put teleportation blocking as part of her starting character powers. The GM approved her character and since the chance to use it never came up everyone forgot she had that power. Then the BBEG tried to pull a "talk and teleport" on the party and she said "no". That put a real crimp in the campaign but the GM learned a valuable lesson that day.
if I was in OP's shoes I would've went "no-no-no-no NOPE! shutting that down right now! veto! my character is NOT pregnant, gay, or her husband's sister!!! I'm the one who made the character, not you, so if you want to make any changes they have to be approved by ME, and I definitely do not approve of what you are trying to do!" basically shut down any unapproved and unwanted changes
I've always wanted to try a DnD session, whether it be in person or online, but I have absolutely no idea how to play and never worked up the courage to search for a group willing to take me (and teach me lol) but when I see these videos, though entertaining, do make me feel kinda fearful these things may happen to me 😭
My current dnd character is a new mother. This was decided in dms between me and my dm. Now currently the plot has the BBEG going after the newborn after the party found out his evil plan. BUT ON THE BRIGHT SIDE THE BABY IS IN A BASSET THAT SHOOTS LVL 9 ELDRITCH BLASTS. But at the same time we are in undermountain and the baby is in a nursery in a temple of Bahamut due to the baby being born blessed by Bahumt. ALSO MY CHARACTER IS A BHAALSPAWN SO I DONT KNOW IF BHAALS ASSASSIN'S OR THE BBEG IS AFTER THE BABY. AAAAAAAAAHHHHHH
This is just... bizarre behavior. Like, with other stories I've heard, I can often times figure out why the DM or player is doing something bad, usually having it boil down to main character syndrome or just wanting complete control of the plot. But why replay the same trope over and over again, why REPEATEDLY make two characters siblings? It feels obsessive.
These DM’s are the worst to me. Having a DM who’s obsessed with party killing is whatever. But when you take the character sheets & dice away, you have DM’s like this who are so badly just horny for someone who is taken. They use D&D as a method of creeping on people. It’s just pathetic.
I've never had a DM force a pregnancy on my character before, but I have had one sexualize them in a weird kinda fetishy way. So I was playing a female tiefling who was 26 but very sheltered as she was raised as basically royalty. At one point, she got hit with aging magic from wild magic and he proceeded to describe how she "developed" in a very creepy way. When I pointed out that it didn't even make sense for her body to change like that since she was already an adult, he said he thought she was a teenager... So that creepy description was for a teen 🤮

My partner sent me this and I was surprised it made it here. I’m the Eris in this story (fake name, obviously). It happened over a year and a half, and I adored the other players. I’ve seen a few comments underneath asking why my partner didn’t defend me- it’s because I defended myself. Any time a woman joke came up, I’d fight the NPCs for my own honour. I confronted the DM as well after all of this with confirmation I wasn’t being crazy. I am on the spectrum and I’m often told I overreact, so I wanted to handle this delicately otherwise I could have lost the friends I made during the shit show :) it’s nice to see everyone being so kind about it though
I really hope after this, you at least put some distance on this dm because he did tell you straight up what he thinks and knows what he is trying to do on you.

My monk lost an arm when he was petrified, he was so effing cool after that! BUT my dm was sure to let me know that we could fix the arm if I wanted!
I also had a character lose arm in an important plot point, then played for 4-5 sessions with one arm with some cool RP, and then DM gave us a quest reward - one use something that would restore my character's arm, but it was around the point when he accepted himself as he is and refused that
That actually is a fairly easy fix, just ask your local cleric (or artificer if you want something more stylish and multifunctional)
I'm playing Pathfinder with friends of mine, and we're exploring Abomination Vaults. We met some ghouls, and they asked for flesh sacrifice. My friend playing swashbuckler immediately gave up his entire left arm and is currently running around with Nero's devil breaker.
Reminds me of my sorcerer who was blinded due to a curse. I really liked it to be honest, the DM wanted it to be reversible but I felt if he just had sight again it'd be kinda lame, so i asked if he could be considered legally blind and here we are still! He uses his walking stick as a spellcasting focus now. Personally i feel like taking away a character's disability is kinda meh, just feels like a boring way to deal with it, we're playing D&D! We can have magical prosthetics, magical wheelchairs, magical hearing aids, magical service animals, magical mobility tools, magical canes for the blind, you name it! Obviously, it's all up to what the players and DM feel like, but personally i just think that finding a new solution is more fun than reversing to what it was before, yk?

As a DM for a very not-DnD rp world, with absolutely no knowledge of DnD itself, even I know that player agency is one of the most sacred aspects of RP that must be respected..
It's why you must be very delicate with anything that effects it.. Of the 400+ encounterable enemy NPC's in my world, less than 10 of them have anything remotely related to mind-control, or direct mind-altering abilities.
Also.. As someone whom is quite expert in all things lewd, I can say without a shadow of a doubt, this DM has a kink.. A very distinct and certain kink, and he is very stubbornly trying to push it onto his players.. Specifically pregnancy, and incest.. I've played in, and experienced enough to know it when I see it.
Basically, everyone gets the final say for what they are in charge of. The players on their characters' actions, and the DM on literally everything else.

To add to the agency of the players, I typically plan to work in character's backstories when I DM, so the players can get experience DMing with their backstories for a session or two. This is probably because I enjoy both DMing and playing, but I've never really implemented it properly, unfortunately. General Sam's Dying of Laughter was a really big inspiration in this regard, as was Kikoskia's various sessions, but scheduling kills all games eventually. I also tend to have a pretty lax "mutual storytelling" philosophy of DMing too but I've also never had players that are bad about losing either.
Workplace TTRPG are a "not even once" line for me tbh too.

I played a blacksmith using spheres of might (pathfinder) who lost his leg to a rusty bear trap. More like the foot, but he opted to lop off his leg from below the knee down.
You know what the dm asked? "Are you sure? You don't have to lose the limb. We can figure something out."
I created automail. Metal magical leg. Ended up losing an arm as well. Turned it into a metal arm with a built in shield.
It was fantastic.

Nope, they don't. You have to understand that beeing a DM is not beeing a god ruling over some players, as a DM you are an entertainer. That can sounds lame but a good DM will make the experience better than any movies or video games ever made.
If a movie sucks, you don't blame the spectator for not enjoying it. Same here. And making something no players want to be part in IS a no no. Doesn't mean you can't kill characters or whatever. But when you have constantly players telling you something feels wrong about a part of the game, and that part is not build in the main story or a crutial part of the game mechanic... THEN GET RID OF IT!
No Gms are perfects, you have the right to make mistake, but actually knowing your players boundaries and knows how to run a game with consideration for those limits will actually makes you a better DM. Gosh, it might even show the others how crazy your imagination can be knowing you had to delt with so many stop signs ;)

I've had a character forced to be pregnant by a dm before (turns out the DM didn't like my replacement character after his dmpc killed my first character, but that's a separate-ish issue). I basically left the session, crying/enraged, and my wife and I left the group not long after. Wasn't worth it. I'm truly horrified that this type of situation has happened to others. I hope they have a better DM now.

A player in a campaign I DM wanted to retire his character a while ago to play a new character. We had his character leave while everyone was sleeping.
I spoke to the player about it to get approval before I finalized it and he gave me the OK.
IMO, that’s how it should be done. Talk to the player beforehand and if they say no, then accept it and work with the player to figure out something else.
The ultimate fate of this character is currently unknown and I’m gonna leave it that way for now.

Plus, there are plenty of biases which cause people to stay in toxic relationships, like in this case other players. Studies have also found that if people have to humiliate themselves they tend to like things they tried to get more than if they weren't humiliated.
Lots of reasons. Crab mentions some of them in the video, but if other elements of the game are genuinely good (the other players, the parts of the game not revolving around DMs issues), then its tolerable-ish.
the mental illness thing is in the indefinite madness table. i’ve had to have words with a dm about it before because a character was given a tic from that table and i thought it was in appropriate to roleplay. the dm and party all agreed and we dropped it and moved on.

Not related to this exact video... But I do want to thank Critcrab for giving voice to our D&D horror stories. It got me to share my one and only D&D horror story on Reddit, and to share my wish to reclaim my character from the fate that had been thrust upon him. A call that a passing DM granted, giving my character a chance to find a happy ending.
A DM that I am now dating, because it turns out we're unbelievably compatible on so many levels. So thank you, Critcrab! In a manner of speaking, you helped make that happen. :)
I wouldn't have a problem with a DM throwing out the idea of my character developing a mental condition but letting me choose if I feel like it could make for an interesting plot. Forcing it is wrong though, like if the DM wants to dictate what's going on in a character's head they might as well dictate everything the characters do, ergo they might play by themselves.
The DM, Kyle, is literally projecting onto her character what he wants for her: to separate her from the friend group and particularly her partner in order to have control over her. Grotesque.
I have played brother/sister characters with my husband in the past but that was not forced on us by anyone else. In my game group your family tree is considered to be completely under the player's control unless you take the "Unknown Parent" disadvantage.
I will say, I'm completely new to running games myself, and the only time I've ever taken away a player's agency was for a joke I wanted to pull. It was harmless and essentially involved using a mischievous/wild card element of the group(it was already canon by this point that the ranger's swarm are devious little things in the group and the ranger themselves were asleep), so the swarm went to move the one PC that had slept outside into a tent that was recently filled with leaves and other stuff in the forest. Of course I let them wake up at this and everyone had fun trying to get the barbarian(the one who'd been sleeping in the tree) down from where the swarm was holding them.
Everyone started cackling when I told them all what was happening, even the player whose character was being moved from their tree.
Not sure if this may have been a bit far or not, but nobody seemed upset and all had a good laugh about it.
Your observation about how the issue was soread out with Skilled DMing between is probably accurate. I had a DM like that. They were skilled at their system, but there were issues that, when they became too close together, made me reflect on the game and realize how awful they were. I still remember how even just One Off situations had people telling me to leave the table, including my best friend who knew nothing of ttrpgs but saw me so distressed. I didn’t listen for MONTHS until I was forced to be away for over a month due to health complications and I realized just how much it had been affecting me. I’m 2.3 years free, and have gone 6 months without flinching at the very sound of that DM’s name.

I mean, there are rules and tables for inflicting madness as a temporary or indefinite debuff in the DMG, as well as long term injuries/disabilities... I just don't think they're used very often. Getting a character or NPC pregnant can also be a neat or useful plot point. I've used all of these mechanics in games I've run, WITH PLAYERS CONSENT. The main issue is the DM just deciding that he's interested in these things and forcing them upon the players, especially when the players express disinterest, or worse, outright discomfort. (As well as whatever personal relationship stuff he seems to be taking out on them)
Like, you just gotta say "Hey, I had an idea, what if explored ___ happening to your character, and here are some theoretical rules for it, would you be interested?" and be willing to accept no for an answer, and be willing to compromise and adjust with feedback along the way to make sure it works out.
Wanted to be her bf, but also had a "mothering" fixture, treating then like children? This guy had an odd collection of fetishes. I can only assume that these were relatively isolated incidents that built up over time, which is how they were willing to put up with the DM and stay in the game(s) as long as they did.

My character was in a very toxic relationship (in dnd) and that was started due to my excitment of a new campaign and I was making crazy choices. Recently I've been deeply regretting that decision and my DM was so amazing he helped figure out a way to safelt break off the relationship instead of forcing me to go further into it.

My first experience playing pathfinder was in a group that was WAY too big, filled with new players to TTRPGs, not just Pathfinder, and had me and my girlfriend at the time. The DM VERY CLEARLY didn't like me because I was dating her and she knew he was trying to get with her. She told him no, straight up, but he kept trying. That, and he would make every effort to not only contrive situations to seperate our characters (I literally never got to meet her character in game, and we weren't planning on dating in character anyways), but also would put me, and the few players I was able to travel with suffer in tough fights and also inflicted some kind of curse on my character that was slowly turning them into some sort of frog creature. Needless to say I didn't stay in that campaign past 3 sessions. This was all over 10 years ago and now I just look at it in absolute confusion. Had I more time, I probably could flesh this out into a whole story but my break is over and I've got to go back to work.

Have to say, that's the first time I have heard of a DM forcing gay status on a pc, usually it's the other way around in these horror stories where the DM gets freaked out by finding out a pc is gay.
The “your character has ADHD” scene made me think of a video I saw reading a tumblr post that mentioned the table agreed one of the characters had ADHD due to certain rolls. A similar thing happened to another character who constantly failed perception rolls so it was agreed the character needed glasses
If the player wants a character to have trauma from events, then the character now has trauma. I’m fine with characters suffering mental wounds from the game’s events as long as the player is also okay with it.

How can you be forced to do anything in dnd? Just get up and walk away from the weirdo table.
Because all your other great friends are at the table and the girl in this situation has said that she had slight Autism and had a fear of overreacting over nothing. Essentially they felt social pressured into staying even without anyone social pressuring them.
I'm gonna have my first dnd session next week and i'm afraid that i will be a terrible player, but by listening your scary stories i'm learning what to avoid and what to do. Thank you.
Mental health issues should only be controlled by the player or inflicted on the player with their consent. Mental health has been a very fun plot point for a character in the past and a therapuetic way to express similar issues I have in a safe environment. The DM, however, should never say a player cannot do something. At the end of the day, it's the players choice on how effected they are mentally, outside of combat related effects.
I don't understand why people tolerate these bad DMs or players.
Anytime I listen to one of these stories, I find myself saying "I would've called the offending person a degenerate, and left immediately, cutting all contact".

See, and I'm over here all, "So you have an NPC that is checking out the women walking by me? That's Fine. Because I am pretty sure that I stated at no time that MY CHARACTER was doing anything like that." I'm willing to get confrontational about my characters and what problems they may have or what they are doing. This crap about PTSD, I'd be all, so my character has a +1 STR? That's fantastic. And if they continued, keep adding bonuses. Unless the player is okay with changes made, as a DM you can't make them. It's the player's character, not the DM's character.
We have lots of psychological and physical traumas in our stories with my group, but those are always discussed and there's more often than not a possibility to fix these things.

I’ve had players ditch a character and tell me the character was now “mine,” in which case I just use them as an NPC, but even if the character survives the story I still ask the player what they want for that character’s future at the end of the game.
I've inflicted permanent debuffs on player characters, but I felt it was justified. I had a War Cleric or something that charged people to heal them. He was often a tight wad and would go out of his way to squeeze NPCs and other players for cash. The final nail in the coffin was when he caused the death of a Father and Son NPC over a few gold.
I forget how now, but he lost his holy symbol and I told him he couldn't use his spells until he went to a temple and got another one. There he had to commune with his God, who informed him he was disappointed by his greedy behavior and would only restore his power on a condition from that point forward 10% of any wealth or treasure he finds is donated to the church. In order to make sure he followed through it was used as a curse and the money just magically vanishes from his inventory.
Another player was constantly eating stuff he found laying around, so I left a cursed meat out that would turn the person who ate it in to a Tortle permanently. Ironically a different player ate it and they loved the change.
On the flip side, I ran a small story that was based off of HP Lovecraft's Reanimator series and at the end I told everyone who played due to the amount of carnage they've witnessed they are now immune to fear.
My wife is actively pregnant with our second child. If I as DM tried to force this on her character, she'd kick the shit outta me! This is SUPER creepy

the thing is, its not even bad to have a fetish like that (speaking as a woman) - its when you force it onto others that's the problems. And judging by the way he forced traditional feminine roles on her and PUNISHED HER for miscarrying (an experience thats incredibly heartbreaking and traumatizing for plenty of pregnant people, and absolutely not their fault when it happens)?? He certainly seems like one of those people who have very traditional and conservative views when it comes to women and probably uses it as a form of control. all in all, disgusting.

All these horror stories I've listened to. I'm glad I've run into and made friends with fantastic nerds that check-in together to make sure everyone is comfortable with the status quo. Even my first long running campaign back in college had limits.
That DM just makes my skin crawl... Maybe it's because of my own personal beliefs that I refuse to compromise even for the sake of games, but the moment he started trying to force pregnancies & other weird stuff on player characters, I'd be gone & trying to put as much physical distance between that DM & myself as possible.
Like recently, near the beginning of a 2-year long Rifts campaign, since my character was the only human female character in the party, the DM had a male water elemental offer to help the party if my character (who like me, is Sapphic & on the Aro/Ace spectrum) would "do a favor" for him. I had my character not only refuse, but also rant, in character, to the rest of the party about why was it that the Sapphic demisexual be getting all the unwanted attention from dudes, and that the next dude that tried to get into her pants would be taking a fire bolt straight to his manhood. The DM thankfully got the hint, and no other NPCs made any sort of advances towards my character.
See, a great GM could take that into account and possibly give you a fun arc with a villain who thinks he's Sune's gift to women. There is nothing more satisfying than taking down a villain who you hate personally as well as professionally.
Oh he managed to do just that, but for the entire party: The "Dragon" to the BBEG of the campaign managed to earn my character & the rest of the party's undying hatred due to his habit of showing up, attacking the party, mind controlling at least one person in the party into doing something terrible (i.e. he successfully mind controlled the dragon hatchling into burninating an entire neighborhood & my character into killing a fellow party member), followed by teleporting away like a little bitch when he was almost dead.
Interrupting him mid-villain monologue at the beginning of the final battle against him & the BBEG by initiating a spell cast (for a spell that makes you damn near immune to magic, psionics & poison) was one of the personal highlights of the campaign for my character, and the entire party was rather happy when the BBEG prevented him from teleporting away like usual (due to mind controlling him to use as a meat shield against us), allowing us to finally give him his just desserts shortly before we took out the BBEG.

My long time friend likes to tell the story of the time she was in a superhero campaign and decided to put teleportation blocking as part of her starting character powers. The GM approved her character and since the chance to use it never came up everyone forgot she had that power. Then the BBEG tried to pull a "talk and teleport" on the party and she said "no". That put a real crimp in the campaign but the GM learned a valuable lesson that day.
if I was in OP's shoes I would've went "no-no-no-no NOPE! shutting that down right now! veto! my character is NOT pregnant, gay, or her husband's sister!!! I'm the one who made the character, not you, so if you want to make any changes they have to be approved by ME, and I definitely do not approve of what you are trying to do!" basically shut down any unapproved and unwanted changes

I've always wanted to try a DnD session, whether it be in person or online, but I have absolutely no idea how to play and never worked up the courage to search for a group willing to take me (and teach me lol) but when I see these videos, though entertaining, do make me feel kinda fearful these things may happen to me 😭
My current dnd character is a new mother. This was decided in dms between me and my dm. Now currently the plot has the BBEG going after the newborn after the party found out his evil plan. BUT ON THE BRIGHT SIDE THE BABY IS IN A BASSET THAT SHOOTS LVL 9 ELDRITCH BLASTS. But at the same time we are in undermountain and the baby is in a nursery in a temple of Bahamut due to the baby being born blessed by Bahumt. ALSO MY CHARACTER IS A BHAALSPAWN SO I DONT KNOW IF BHAALS ASSASSIN'S OR THE BBEG IS AFTER THE BABY. AAAAAAAAAHHHHHH

This is just... bizarre behavior. Like, with other stories I've heard, I can often times figure out why the DM or player is doing something bad, usually having it boil down to main character syndrome or just wanting complete control of the plot. But why replay the same trope over and over again, why REPEATEDLY make two characters siblings? It feels obsessive.
These DM’s are the worst to me. Having a DM who’s obsessed with party killing is whatever. But when you take the character sheets & dice away, you have DM’s like this who are so badly just horny for someone who is taken. They use D&D as a method of creeping on people. It’s just pathetic.
I've never had a DM force a pregnancy on my character before, but I have had one sexualize them in a weird kinda fetishy way. So I was playing a female tiefling who was 26 but very sheltered as she was raised as basically royalty. At one point, she got hit with aging magic from wild magic and he proceeded to describe how she "developed" in a very creepy way. When I pointed out that it didn't even make sense for her body to change like that since she was already an adult, he said he thought she was a teenager... So that creepy description was for a teen 🤮
