11:24 Gerry explained it perfectly, I think. The fears, they are like colors. You can go this one’s blue, and this one’s green, but there is no difinitive line. Just like how in different languages you might have different base colors that are the common groups, it’s like that with the fears.
I can't help but recall how in some languages, entire categories of colors (at least as english speakers know them) are completely absent, or there even being additional ones, or how artistic types might even be able to tell you names of even more specific shades. Like how there's green, but that could be broken down into chartreuse, lime, pine, grass, paris, shamrock, turquoise or mint (both of which could arguably be either green or blue depending on the hue), and a myriad more. Perhaps, in a sense, the TMP method isn't so much a counter to the TMA categories, but a refinement.
This is a fantastic video!!! additional clues as to what's going on: - For those who listen very closely, you will start noticing a small bleep in the audio whenever someone says a lie - as if something KNOWS when someone is lying. - The forms that Sam fills in during the hiring process - a form that literally no one else ever bothered filling in - are a lovely Chekhov's Gun just waiting to pop off. - Celia sleepwalks (or teleports, it is unclear) very long distances - When Sam and Celia meet Jerry and Gertrude, Jerry's voice is almost TOO joyful; btw, they obviously lied during that conversation - During the last MagArc these recorders would pop up out of nowhere, to record statements - it would make sense whatever was controlling them (SPOILERY, I'll not say anything more) is the one using the electronics in MagProtocol

As for Celia teleporting/sleepwalking, I think in at least one episode she woke up next to some train tracks when the train passed her by - she didn't know how she got there, and had to speed home to her son. Since the I think she asked Georgie to babysit him from time to time on a very short noticed.
The eye stabbing thing was less due to psychic control from Elias and more to do with the dream logic the Fifteen Fears operated off of. Johnny Sims (the author, not the character) said in a behind-the-scenes episode that a lot of stuff having to do with Fear entities operates off of "dream logic" or, things that seem to make a philosophical sense if not a logical one. It's part of the reason why remember deep personal connections saved people from The Lonely on more than one occasion, or why a few potential victims avoid being killed by fear entities by either ignoring them or just accepting their fate, as was the case of a statement giver who laid down to die when nearly killed by an entity crushing her subway train. Stabbing the eyes removes you from control of The Eye - because you are symbolically giving up your ability to percieve, the entity that's all about perception and observation can no longer see or affect you.
I've wondered about the part with disconnecting oneself from The Eye through blindness, always thought it was more literal than symbolic/philosophical! Makes so much more sense lol
Love this! I think it’d be really helpful if someone in this fandom also tied in all the additional material that came out before this sequel series- for me, the .JMJ error code was a MASSIVE piece of evidence for the theory that Jon, Martin, and Jonah are all stuck in the computers

What's the additional material that came out before the series? Were they codes posted through social media accounts or episodes? Where was this error code shown because it sounds so convincing?!
I have a theory about where the series is going. I think that the apocalypse didn't actually end at the end of MA. When the web lady said "you have no idea what you did" it made me think that they didnt actually reverse anything but just made the pocket dimensions bleed into one another, and the domains became a bit more muted in their horrors as result and the avatars of those domains had to start sharing the victims and cooperate with one another, like mob bosses or CEOs of various companies. And the liaisons are there to ensure that the human suffering is spread equally amonst the avatars. The first thing that ive noticed that put me on this train of thought is the heavy emphisis on the way working class people are treated. Every episode save for a few has to do with the way employees are treated by their bosses or clients. The horrors that each person faces is a direct result of that power dynamic. Even the office politics that the main group face seems to back that up. I also think that the OIAR is not a product of the eye but a product of the Web. They would be the only entity able to hold this whole system up if my theory pans out. But only time will tell.
Regarding the whole "too complex to categorise" thing, it's interesting to note that that isn't a unique idea for the sequel series. While the Fears definitely DO tend to manifest in more obvious ways throughout Archives, they aren't entirely rigidly defined. There are plenty of episodes which feature statements that could be attributed to any number of Fears, and others that don't seem to fit any neatly. There are also quite a few obvious connections within the new series, such as (spoilers for PTC 15) Lady M directly using language tied to the Hunt. Things are undeniably different, but I'm not sure if that's yet grounds to toss out the entire organisational system (although I have my own personal doubts about the stability of the original 15 Fears anyways, but that's far too long a point to make here)

@@spookymcg ABSOLUTELY. The accuracy of TMA's organisation system is something I've been meaning to look into for a while now, so it's great to see that I'm not the only one thinking about it.
It's been a little while since I listened to TMA, but I do recall a big revelation from the later seasons being that _all_ the Fears are connected to each other. There's a lot of overlap, and trying to break them into discrete categories is pointless. As someone with a degree in library science with a focus on cataloging, I really get that.
Yeah, I think they were described as being like paint that can be mixed. And I think that having overlap made the best episodes. Do you remember the episode about Long John’s Cave? I can identify five fears in that, and it’s still one of the scarier ones because you can’t write it off as just another Vast episode.

Then later someone explains it as akin to being an ant and not understanding that the malicious eye staring upon your destruction is a part of the same being as the massive boot crushing all that you know. You're absolutely right that the merging of the fears makes for the spookiest episodes, basically any episode involving Hilltop Road gives me chills :)

a couple themes ive noticed that are markedly distinct from the original 15 fears are water (i.e. drowning, horrible creatures of the deep, also a bit of megalophobia), plants/transformation (becoming a tree or coral or what have you, surprisingly scary when you listen to them), and forbidden knowledge(?), the last of which might be documentation of forces separate from the fears and/or their equivalents. each case that touches these themes makes me think "i have no idea if this would fit into any of the 15 fears." this feels important because while the magnus protocol doesnt in any way have to follow the same rules as the archives, the existence of a few pretty consistent but distinct motifs implies, to me, that this world does have its own distinct powers
Johnny has had me for a fool.... I was trying to think of new ways the Entities may have split apart in this new world, but I think you hit the nail on the head. There's too many to categorize in TMP. Mannnn I can't wait to see what all happens in this show
I think Ink5oul is meant to be nonbinary from what I’ve heard in the series and read in transcripts. It hasn’t been stated outright but every character so far has referred to them with they/them pronouns meaning they’re either nonbinary or perhaps just very mysterious, but I’d probably go with the former if I had to guess

They’re using our familiarity with the previous show to throw us on the wrong trail. Norris and Chester are not Martin and Jon, it feels to easy. They are introduced in the first episode, there’s got to be more to it. (In my opinion)

i think my favourite detail that showed early on in tmagp that this was a whole different dimension is that in TMA the institute is like, pretty well known/sort of general knowledge. People come in and give statements so routinely the archive is overflowing with them, we SEE people come in and willingly give statements to the magnus institute (for whatever reason), but in the world of protocol, not only does no one know what the institute DID, but people don’t even seem to know the OIAR exists or what it does. While a lot of the larger elements of the Fears and their avatars weren’t common knowledge in the original series, it really does feel like ALL information on the fears is being controlled both BY and FOR the OIAR…..
Great video! I’m absolutely loving protocol, even backed it. Really nice overview of all the characters. I already have a bit of trouble keeping everyone apart and remembering all the plot lines, but if it’s anything like TMA, that won’t be a problem.
I've now listened to the entire season 1 of TMP. The thing that leapt out at me was the references to alchemy. In our version of reality, the discipline of alchemy eventually became science, but I'm not sure the same is true in the world of the Magnus Protocol -- perhaps there was no change because in this universe, alchemy actually works? Based on some of the statements, it certainly seems to. I suspect this will be important later.
okay that intro was AMAZING! I was caught off guard from the slow intro but quickly jumped right into it! I've been recommended this for a while and decided to finally watch it as I drew, and let me say, this was worth it! the picture of Lady Alcina Dimitrescu as Lady Mowbray is SO ACCURATE! exactly what was going through my mind when i hit that episode.
My current theory on the tapes: Jon may have ascended to entetyhood and is now taking people's final moments via the tape recorders to feed himself, and Martin is actually the guy in the big black cloak with the gun who saved the POV character from the donations episode but thats pure unadulterated speculation

This is random and idk if it's....an error on the team's part but my sister and i have taken note of this. Some of the episode titles will be one thing but in the intro Jonny or Alex will say a DIFFERENT title, then the next day the title is different on the episode card. It's happened a few times and it could be an error but....that seems like a weird thing to mess up when from what I understand that hasn't been an issue before. So why are some of the titles changing before our eyes? Also the official transcripts will have a different name and then suddenly change. Again it could just be an error but it's happened one too many times for me to think that's an error on the team's part and not an intentional decision. Alao note how Augustus always seems to read "old" statements or letters, similar to the letters Jonah Magnus would receive from his fellows, or any of the other old statements jon would read. Edit: wow my spelling was horrible lol, fixed spelling errors.

Excellent point! I thought more along the lines of The Piper, although they're technically both the slaughter? There isn't much distinction in the podcast itself, but I kinda consider them a bit akin to how punk bands have caused riots versus how Celtic war horns were meant to terrify. Part of me wants to tie it in with the song Devil went down to Georgia or old American folklore (could also occur elsewhere, I just know the American versions) involving people selling their soul for musical skill too. Perhaps it could also be partially connected to Dionysus' Maenads??? That could just be the reawakening of my Greek mythology hyperfixation though

1st. 10/10. love the vids and deep dives. gonna binge your stuff, keep it up!!!! Below is my Theory/Headcannon. I have a feeling the fears are muddled from the end of Archives, as if pouring 15 vibrant paints down a drain and flushing it with water. But below, is more of my thoughts and ideas. None of this is concrete but spoilers for the ARCHIVES below, so be warned. SO my theory is that after the end of Archives, the fears were plopped somewhere but as an amalgam of all the fears. Where flesh meats corruption, where the lonely meets the stranger, and where the buried their eyes. Each instance of fear from this mottled entity can not be split back. As if one could un-mix mixed clay. So to prevent what happened last time with the archive, people made a protocol and named it after the one man who controlled the fears for a complete ritual. But who could manipulate fears like that? Maybe an avatar who survived, who fell down a hole, riddled with recording tape, and an expert at only being seen when she wants to be seen. Anabelle Cane as an avatar of the Web just might be able to. She has an artifact that prevents her from being seen by the Eye, and last we saw she escaped, or at least lives. If you could use avatars of the Eye, maybe like an archivist or one of their oldest and devoted or the one who could do nothing but watch, maybe just maybe, you could watch over every little fear. Trap them on the web, in the World wide Web, and sit back as the OIAR assigns and break down fears into specifics, a fraction of a fifteenth if you will. With that, you may just prevent another complete ritual ever again. Maybe you could put each piece back to the way it was. Whatever is left of the Eye would never know. It is stated to be more of an observer, passive. The Web is the only one self aware enough to enact a plan, if you can believe that. Either way, Anabelle and Web influenced or not, I do believe the fears are too muddled as of now, and we shall see what comes of people either trying to keep them that way, or unraveling them. The only other thing is we have yet to see spiders or their silks.
Its been a couple months and we also now know Trevor Herbert is still alive but as a rich bureaucracy man, so theres a lot of evidence to support this being a multiverse situation

I adore the original Magnus Archives, and I am a huge fan of Jonathan Simms writing. So, I just started the Magnus Protocol recently, and really have been enjoying it as well.
I remember seeing somewhere once that the "fears" in this might not be "fears" as they were in the old one, but the fears interacting with desire. (no idea who i originally saw it from. it was just there and I have been thinking about it since. trying to find a way that the series disproves it.) In Example: Ink5oul's desire to be for lack of a better term an influencer, their desire for fame. meanwhile needles apparent desire for close ness and connection to be feared. or even in a more recent episode Isaac Newton's creation is a desire for creation beyond what exists... or something. probably not what's going on, but deffinatly something to chew on. thanks for the video. should revise his when we know more.

Some time ago me and my friend were trying to classify the fear of hunger into one of te classic fears, we actually came upon a reddt post, I think it was on the official tma subreddit, where somebody came up with a new entity called The Rime. It's supposed to be a fear of deprivation, the not enough to live but too much too die kind of situation, and would be assosiated wit hunger and cold. When I tell you how buffled I was after listening to Running on Empty, because it sounded exactly how such an entity would manifest. Also the theme of hunger seems to continue in the new episodes. I wonder if the connection is there.
Loved the video. Gotta say though i take issue with your stance that TMP requires knowledge of TMA. If we consider the fact that the writers have explicitly claimed this to be a sort of 'Side-quell' we can know that it's some kind of parallel universe thing. With that in mind, though there are explicit similarities in TMP from TMA (most notably the appearance of the eponymous institute), i don't think their appearance shifts the narrative dramatically enough for you to need to know TMA. does it add layers? sure, but I'm not inclined to believe they'd say "You don't need to know TMA for this" if that wasn't the case, otherwise that seems cruel to a prospective audience. All this with love, ofc. Cool content!
My theory for a while now has been that the goal of the oiar is to likit the power of the fears, intentionally atomising them through what we'd understand as the eye such that it becomes impossible to bring them all together like what happened in magnus

I think the OIAR gets stories from thin air or some kind of Oracle to let them know what the Fears are doing right then. The unknowing workers categorize the story, then the higher ups cause an equal but opposite fear event to happen to try and balance them out to prevent a winner from pulling ahead. Thats my current guess
I don't think TMP will be dropping the fear categorisation aspect of Magnus. Its one of the most iconic parts of the original show. There are definitely new powers now, but more of the TMA fears seems to be showing up as the show goes on. The 15 probably still exist, but they're no longer alone. Which muddies things a bit.
Lena mentioned that some of the powers in the universe are benevolent, which obviously doesn't line up with what is said by Gerry in TMA's 111th episode; "No. There aren’t any god-like powers of hope, or love, or indigestion, or whatever. At least not that I’ve seen. Just fear. I don’t know why." Which leads me to believe that rather than being generated from The Thing That Was Fear, these powers are native powers to the TMP universe. And take up essentially every historical statement in the show, rather than fear. I think the fears got into the TMP universe some time around 2020, when the original show ended. A common idea is that at least some of these powers are based around hunger or desire; for instance, Mr. Bonzo would come from Nigel's want to be famous and create a funny character, and Lady Mowbray would be linked to a thirst for blood. She doesn't act like a Hunt avatar because she relishes in the end of the chase and getting the chef to prepare the corpses of the prey to be eaten. "Just a feeling. When I was - (struggles for words) You know what my least favorite part of a case was? Arresting them. I hated the handcuffs, the, the click. It meant the chase was done, the hunt was over. Satisfying, on a good day, sure, but moreish. I never really wanted it to be over." - Daisy, from TMA 113 "Dead Horse"
I also have a personal pet theory that Ink5oul is somehow related to The Vast, and will end up being a major player by the end of this season or in another season. One recurring theme in this show so far is the iconography or literal appearance of a snake. Only 16 episodes in, and so far we have the serpent tattoo design, the low dice roll being referred to as "snake eyes," another tattoo with a design of a massive sea monster on it which could be a serpent, and the snake implosion from episode 14. Ink5oul's usual thing is stealing tattoos off of corpses and putting them on other people, but what if the specific tattoo design from the Marked episode was some sort of manifestation of The Vast when it came through into the new universe? Tying into the consistent themes of hunger, neverending desire for *more.* They already serve one dark god but now have stumbled across another and want their finger in the fear pie. We also hear from a person that has drowned and is somehow still talking in episode 15, talking about the cold dark depths in a similar scenario to MAG 195- Adrift. This statement also had a *reptillian sea monster in it.* The weird thing about TMP and the ARG is the connection to Alchemy. There are alchemical symbols in the OIAR's logo, and it was a pretty big recurring element in the TMP ARG they did before the start of the show. Then, a thought came to me and I did a little digging; >*Known as the oldest allegorical symbol in alchemy,* the ouroboros in this context represented the concept of eternity and endless return, as well as the unity of time’s beginning and >end, rather than the Egypt-specific journeys of the sun and the Nile. Ouroboros. A symbol of a snake or other monstrous serpent that eats its own tail. Which ties into the theme of hunger, and following that part of yourself with no regard for the consequences, and Ouroboros is also *frequently used as a symbol for infinity.* A pretty BIG thing, don't you think? Also ties into how Ink5oul is related to art and illustration, since thats the main way an Ouroboros would be represented before the rise of tech like computers. We've heard of "The Deep" so far in the podcast, and if I had to hazard a guess, i'd say that will end up as the TMP verse terminology for The Vast. Same fear, different name. Maybe some more crossover with The Buried? All 15 going through that crack in space at Hilltop Road must have been a pretty tight squeeze. Wouldn't be shocked if some of the fears didn't come out of it unscathed.
Or i'm a simpleton making connections where they don't exist and the show is actually going in a totally different direction. Who the fuck knows at this point. Nevertheless excited for Episode 17 tomorrow lol

hmm… honestly, i haven’t found another podcast that scratches the itch QUITE like Magnus, but there are other good ones out there. I’ve recently been introduced to Old Gods of Appalachia, which is pretty heavy on the American Gothic horror i’ve found myself enjoying. it’s good. I also enjoy Malevolent, which is less of an anthology, but still has a lot of different spooky moments. I’d also recommend the channel Creepcast if you want to have a bit more fun with some creepypastas? I honestly need more recommendations myself!
BE FOREWARNED I'M INCLUDING SPOILERS FROM THE FIRST SERIES TO SUPPORT MY THEORIZING, READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!!! So Anyway; I've been fostering the theory that those who were too strongly tied to the fears through some form or another got pulled through the rift, like Annabelle alluded to as a possibility. What's more in line with a manipulator than to tell the truth while making you think she lies? Celia lost her identity and is assumed to have stolen another via the carousel or some other Stranger Domain, so she'd be very heavily Marked. Jon and Martin were both implied to be fatally wounded, Jonah explicitly so, and all three about as intertwined as one could be to the fears, so their consciousnesses might've gotten pulled through but their bodies might've been too damaged to survive the trip. I know there's evidence to the contrary, Basira mentioning Avatars who remained in their original world getting absolutely murderized after loosing their patrons, so it could be that I'm wrong or maybe that it only worked if they were close enough. Either way, I'm so happy that I get to enjoy this with you all!!! I didn't pick up TMA until about halfway into the third season, so I didn't get to participate in the early days fun, unlike now :)

isnt it already confirmed that georgie and melanie avoided being tortured in the domains because georgie was incapable of fear and melanie because she severed her connection with the eye? the moment jon and martin found georgie and melanie? my idea of the AU is that gerry, gertrude, georgie and gwen 'bouchard' is simply because it's a whole separate AU with weird AU stuff, therefore the characters are born but had a normal growing up. the magnus institute caught fire in the 90's in TMAGP i think? so it's not crazy for mary and eric to have met each other there but died some way or another so gerry was happy and normal. i can't explain gertrude though. Im wondering if the complication of cases is caused by having another universe’s fear entity injected into the universe? Theres no implication that another universe wouldnt have an equivalent fear entity if it has an equivalent of other characters(cough celia cough)
SPOILERS FOR TMA SEASON 5: About the cursed items, Anabelle Cane said that, when the Pupil of the Eye was killed, the tapes would be the only connection between the Fears and the real world so, if they fell into another universe, the Fears would go there. Maybe, in the original tma universe, there were also other items that connected Fears to the world, such as the syringe in Blood Bag. When gathering the tapes, Anabelle also added these items to the web, so they also fell into the next universe and are now being used as catalysts.

11:24 Gerry explained it perfectly, I think. The fears, they are like colors. You can go this one’s blue, and this one’s green, but there is no difinitive line. Just like how in different languages you might have different base colors that are the common groups, it’s like that with the fears.
I can't help but recall how in some languages, entire categories of colors (at least as english speakers know them) are completely absent, or there even being additional ones, or how artistic types might even be able to tell you names of even more specific shades. Like how there's green, but that could be broken down into chartreuse, lime, pine, grass, paris, shamrock, turquoise or mint (both of which could arguably be either green or blue depending on the hue), and a myriad more. Perhaps, in a sense, the TMP method isn't so much a counter to the TMA categories, but a refinement.

- When Sam and Celia meet Jerry and Gertrude, Jerry's voice is almost TOO joyful; btw, they obviously lied during that conversation
- During the last MagArc these recorders would pop up out of nowhere, to record statements - it would make sense whatever was controlling them (SPOILERY, I'll not say anything more) is the one using the electronics in MagProtocol

As for Celia teleporting/sleepwalking, I think in at least one episode she woke up next to some train tracks when the train passed her by - she didn't know how she got there, and had to speed home to her son. Since the I think she asked Georgie to babysit him from time to time on a very short noticed.

it’s a hard choice…
The eye stabbing thing was less due to psychic control from Elias and more to do with the dream logic the Fifteen Fears operated off of. Johnny Sims (the author, not the character) said in a behind-the-scenes episode that a lot of stuff having to do with Fear entities operates off of "dream logic" or, things that seem to make a philosophical sense if not a logical one. It's part of the reason why remember deep personal connections saved people from The Lonely on more than one occasion, or why a few potential victims avoid being killed by fear entities by either ignoring them or just accepting their fate, as was the case of a statement giver who laid down to die when nearly killed by an entity crushing her subway train. Stabbing the eyes removes you from control of The Eye - because you are symbolically giving up your ability to percieve, the entity that's all about perception and observation can no longer see or affect you.

I have a theory about where the series is going. I think that the apocalypse didn't actually end at the end of MA. When the web lady said "you have no idea what you did" it made me think that they didnt actually reverse anything but just made the pocket dimensions bleed into one another, and the domains became a bit more muted in their horrors as result and the avatars of those domains had to start sharing the victims and cooperate with one another, like mob bosses or CEOs of various companies. And the liaisons are there to ensure that the human suffering is spread equally amonst the avatars. The first thing that ive noticed that put me on this train of thought is the heavy emphisis on the way working class people are treated. Every episode save for a few has to do with the way employees are treated by their bosses or clients. The horrors that each person faces is a direct result of that power dynamic. Even the office politics that the main group face seems to back that up. I also think that the OIAR is not a product of the eye but a product of the Web. They would be the only entity able to hold this whole system up if my theory pans out. But only time will tell.

Regarding the whole "too complex to categorise" thing, it's interesting to note that that isn't a unique idea for the sequel series. While the Fears definitely DO tend to manifest in more obvious ways throughout Archives, they aren't entirely rigidly defined. There are plenty of episodes which feature statements that could be attributed to any number of Fears, and others that don't seem to fit any neatly. There are also quite a few obvious connections within the new series, such as (spoilers for PTC 15) Lady M directly using language tied to the Hunt. Things are undeniably different, but I'm not sure if that's yet grounds to toss out the entire organisational system (although I have my own personal doubts about the stability of the original 15 Fears anyways, but that's far too long a point to make here)

@@spookymcg ABSOLUTELY. The accuracy of TMA's organisation system is something I've been meaning to look into for a while now, so it's great to see that I'm not the only one thinking about it.
It's been a little while since I listened to TMA, but I do recall a big revelation from the later seasons being that _all_ the Fears are connected to each other. There's a lot of overlap, and trying to break them into discrete categories is pointless.
As someone with a degree in library science with a focus on cataloging, I really get that.
Yeah, I think they were described as being like paint that can be mixed. And I think that having overlap made the best episodes. Do you remember the episode about Long John’s Cave? I can identify five fears in that, and it’s still one of the scarier ones because you can’t write it off as just another Vast episode.

a video about one of my favorite podcasts by one of my favorite horror youtubers? magnificent! i feel like medieval nobility putting on this video before i eat.
a couple themes ive noticed that are markedly distinct from the original 15 fears are water (i.e. drowning, horrible creatures of the deep, also a bit of megalophobia), plants/transformation (becoming a tree or coral or what have you, surprisingly scary when you listen to them), and forbidden knowledge(?), the last of which might be documentation of forces separate from the fears and/or their equivalents. each case that touches these themes makes me think "i have no idea if this would fit into any of the 15 fears." this feels important because while the magnus protocol doesnt in any way have to follow the same rules as the archives, the existence of a few pretty consistent but distinct motifs implies, to me, that this world does have its own distinct powers
Johnny has had me for a fool.... I was trying to think of new ways the Entities may have split apart in this new world, but I think you hit the nail on the head. There's too many to categorize in TMP. Mannnn I can't wait to see what all happens in this show
I think Ink5oul is meant to be nonbinary from what I’ve heard in the series and read in transcripts. It hasn’t been stated outright but every character so far has referred to them with they/them pronouns meaning they’re either nonbinary or perhaps just very mysterious, but I’d probably go with the former if I had to guess

i think my favourite detail that showed early on in tmagp that this was a whole different dimension is that in TMA the institute is like, pretty well known/sort of general knowledge. People come in and give statements so routinely the archive is overflowing with them, we SEE people come in and willingly give statements to the magnus institute (for whatever reason), but in the world of protocol, not only does no one know what the institute DID, but people don’t even seem to know the OIAR exists or what it does. While a lot of the larger elements of the Fears and their avatars weren’t common knowledge in the original series, it really does feel like ALL information on the fears is being controlled both BY and FOR the OIAR…..

I've now listened to the entire season 1 of TMP. The thing that leapt out at me was the references to alchemy. In our version of reality, the discipline of alchemy eventually became science, but I'm not sure the same is true in the world of the Magnus Protocol -- perhaps there was no change because in this universe, alchemy actually works? Based on some of the statements, it certainly seems to. I suspect this will be important later.

This is random and idk if it's....an error on the team's part but my sister and i have taken note of this. Some of the episode titles will be one thing but in the intro Jonny or Alex will say a DIFFERENT title, then the next day the title is different on the episode card. It's happened a few times and it could be an error but....that seems like a weird thing to mess up when from what I understand that hasn't been an issue before. So why are some of the titles changing before our eyes? Also the official transcripts will have a different name and then suddenly change. Again it could just be an error but it's happened one too many times for me to think that's an error on the team's part and not an intentional decision.
Alao note how Augustus always seems to read "old" statements or letters, similar to the letters Jonah Magnus would receive from his fellows, or any of the other old statements jon would read.

There isn't much distinction in the podcast itself, but I kinda consider them a bit akin to how punk bands have caused riots versus how Celtic war horns were meant to terrify. Part of me wants to tie it in with the song Devil went down to Georgia or old American folklore (could also occur elsewhere, I just know the American versions) involving people selling their soul for musical skill too. 1st. 10/10. love the vids and deep dives. gonna binge your stuff, keep it up!!!! Below is my Theory/Headcannon. I have a feeling the fears are muddled from the end of Archives, as if pouring 15 vibrant paints down a drain and flushing it with water. But below, is more of my thoughts and ideas. None of this is concrete but spoilers for the ARCHIVES below, so be warned.
SO my theory is that after the end of Archives, the fears were plopped somewhere but as an amalgam of all the fears. Where flesh meats corruption, where the lonely meets the stranger, and where the buried their eyes. Each instance of fear from this mottled entity can not be split back. As if one could un-mix mixed clay. So to prevent what happened last time with the archive, people made a protocol and named it after the one man who controlled the fears for a complete ritual. But who could manipulate fears like that? Maybe an avatar who survived, who fell down a hole, riddled with recording tape, and an expert at only being seen when she wants to be seen.
Anabelle Cane as an avatar of the Web just might be able to. She has an artifact that prevents her from being seen by the Eye, and last we saw she escaped, or at least lives. If you could use avatars of the Eye, maybe like an archivist or one of their oldest and devoted or the one who could do nothing but watch, maybe just maybe, you could watch over every little fear. Trap them on the web, in the World wide Web, and sit back as the OIAR assigns and break down fears into specifics, a fraction of a fifteenth if you will. With that, you may just prevent another complete ritual ever again. Maybe you could put each piece back to the way it was. Whatever is left of the Eye would never know. It is stated to be more of an observer, passive. The Web is the only one self aware enough to enact a plan, if you can believe that.
Either way, Anabelle and Web influenced or not, I do believe the fears are too muddled as of now, and we shall see what comes of people either trying to keep them that way, or unraveling them. The only other thing is we have yet to see spiders or their silks.
This is a really interesting theory. I like it a lot! We’ll just have to keep watching to see if you’re right!

I adore the original Magnus Archives, and I am a huge fan of Jonathan Simms writing. So, I just started the Magnus Protocol recently, and really have been enjoying it as well.

I remember seeing somewhere once that the "fears" in this might not be "fears" as they were in the old one, but the fears interacting with desire. (no idea who i originally saw it from. it was just there and I have been thinking about it since. trying to find a way that the series disproves it.)
In Example: Ink5oul's desire to be for lack of a better term an influencer, their desire for fame. meanwhile needles apparent desire for close ness and connection to be feared. or even in a more recent episode Isaac Newton's creation is a desire for creation beyond what exists... or something. probably not what's going on, but deffinatly something to chew on.

Some time ago me and my friend were trying to classify the fear of hunger into one of te classic fears, we actually came upon a reddt post, I think it was on the official tma subreddit, where somebody came up with a new entity called The Rime. It's supposed to be a fear of deprivation, the not enough to live but too much too die kind of situation, and would be assosiated wit hunger and cold. When I tell you how buffled I was after listening to Running on Empty, because it sounded exactly how such an entity would manifest. Also the theme of hunger seems to continue in the new episodes. I wonder if the connection is there.

Loved the video. Gotta say though i take issue with your stance that TMP requires knowledge of TMA. If we consider the fact that the writers have explicitly claimed this to be a sort of 'Side-quell' we can know that it's some kind of parallel universe thing. With that in mind, though there are explicit similarities in TMP from TMA (most notably the appearance of the eponymous institute), i don't think their appearance shifts the narrative dramatically enough for you to need to know TMA. does it add layers? sure, but I'm not inclined to believe they'd say "You don't need to know TMA for this" if that wasn't the case, otherwise that seems cruel to a prospective audience.

I think the OIAR gets stories from thin air or some kind of Oracle to let them know what the Fears are doing right then. The unknowing workers categorize the story, then the higher ups cause an equal but opposite fear event to happen to try and balance them out to prevent a winner from pulling ahead.
Thats my current guess
I don't think TMP will be dropping the fear categorisation aspect of Magnus. Its one of the most iconic parts of the original show. There are definitely new powers now, but more of the TMA fears seems to be showing up as the show goes on. The 15 probably still exist, but they're no longer alone. Which muddies things a bit.
Lena mentioned that some of the powers in the universe are benevolent, which obviously doesn't line up with what is said by Gerry in TMA's 111th episode;
"No. There aren’t any god-like powers of hope, or love, or indigestion, or whatever. At least not that I’ve seen. Just fear. I don’t know why."
Which leads me to believe that rather than being generated from The Thing That Was Fear, these powers are native powers to the TMP universe. And take up essentially every historical statement in the show, rather than fear. I think the fears got into the TMP universe some time around 2020, when the original show ended. A common idea is that at least some of these powers are based around hunger or desire; for instance, Mr. Bonzo would come from Nigel's want to be famous and create a funny character, and Lady Mowbray would be linked to a thirst for blood. She doesn't act like a Hunt avatar because she relishes in the end of the chase and getting the chef to prepare the corpses of the prey to be eaten.

I also have a personal pet theory that Ink5oul is somehow related to The Vast, and will end up being a major player by the end of this season or in another season.
One recurring theme in this show so far is the iconography or literal appearance of a snake. Only 16 episodes in, and so far we have the serpent tattoo design, the low dice roll being referred to as "snake eyes," another tattoo with a design of a massive sea monster on it which could be a serpent, and the snake implosion from episode 14.
Ink5oul's usual thing is stealing tattoos off of corpses and putting them on other people, but what if the specific tattoo design from the Marked episode was some sort of manifestation of The Vast when it came through into the new universe? Tying into the consistent themes of hunger, neverending desire for *more.* They already serve one dark god but now have stumbled across another and want their finger in the fear pie. We also hear from a person that has drowned and is somehow still talking in episode 15, talking about the cold dark depths in a similar scenario to MAG 195- Adrift. This statement also had a *reptillian sea monster in it.*
The weird thing about TMP and the ARG is the connection to Alchemy. There are alchemical symbols in the OIAR's logo, and it was a pretty big recurring element in the TMP ARG they did before the start of the show. Then, a thought came to me and I did a little digging;
>*Known as the oldest allegorical symbol in alchemy,* the ouroboros in this context represented the concept of eternity and endless return, as well as the unity of time’s beginning and >end, rather than the Egypt-specific journeys of the sun and the Nile.
Ouroboros. A symbol of a snake or other monstrous serpent that eats its own tail. Which ties into the theme of hunger, and following that part of yourself with no regard for the consequences, and Ouroboros is also *frequently used as a symbol for infinity.* A pretty BIG thing, don't you think? Also ties into how Ink5oul is related to art and illustration, since thats the main way an Ouroboros would be represented before the rise of tech like computers.
We've heard of "The Deep" so far in the podcast, and if I had to hazard a guess, i'd say that will end up as the TMP verse terminology for The Vast. Same fear, different name. Maybe some more crossover with The Buried? All 15 going through that crack in space at Hilltop Road must have been a pretty tight squeeze. Wouldn't be shocked if some of the fears didn't come out of it unscathed.
Or i'm a simpleton making connections where they don't exist and the show is actually going in a totally different direction. Who the fuck knows at this point. Nevertheless excited for Episode 17 tomorrow lol

hmm… honestly, i haven’t found another podcast that scratches the itch QUITE like Magnus, but there are other good ones out there. I’ve recently been introduced to Old Gods of Appalachia, which is pretty heavy on the American Gothic horror i’ve found myself enjoying. it’s good. I also enjoy Malevolent, which is less of an anthology, but still has a lot of different spooky moments. I’d also recommend the channel Creepcast if you want to have a bit more fun with some creepypastas? I honestly need more recommendations myself!

I've been fostering the theory that those who were too strongly tied to the fears through some form or another got pulled through the rift, like Annabelle alluded to as a possibility. What's more in line with a manipulator than to tell the truth while making you think she lies? Celia lost her identity and is assumed to have stolen another via the carousel or some other Stranger Domain, so she'd be very heavily Marked. Jon and Martin were both implied to be fatally wounded, Jonah explicitly so, and all three about as intertwined as one could be to the fears, so their consciousnesses might've gotten pulled through but their bodies might've been too damaged to survive the trip. I know there's evidence to the contrary, Basira mentioning Avatars who remained in their original world getting absolutely murderized after loosing their patrons, so it could be that I'm wrong or maybe that it only worked if they were close enough. Either way, I'm so happy that I get to enjoy this with you all!!! I didn't pick up TMA until about halfway into the third season, so I didn't get to participate in the early days fun, unlike now :)

my idea of the AU is that gerry, gertrude, georgie and gwen 'bouchard' is simply because it's a whole separate AU with weird AU stuff, therefore the characters are born but had a normal growing up. the magnus institute caught fire in the 90's in TMAGP i think? so it's not crazy for mary and eric to have met each other there but died some way or another so gerry was happy and normal. i can't explain gertrude though. (but it wasn't sue sims voice acting, was it? i don't recall her in the credits), the bouchard family seems to be big and prestigious or something so it wouldn't be far fetched to have gwen be a bouchard yet not know elias at all if he even exists in this universe (outside of a few family gatherings ofc)

Im wondering if the complication of cases is caused by having another universe’s fear entity injected into the universe? Theres no implication that another universe wouldnt have an equivalent fear entity if it has an equivalent of other characters(cough celia cough)

About the cursed items, Anabelle Cane said that, when the Pupil of the Eye was killed, the tapes would be the only connection between the Fears and the real world so, if they fell into another universe, the Fears would go there.
Maybe, in the original tma universe, there were also other items that connected Fears to the world, such as the syringe in Blood Bag. When gathering the tapes, Anabelle also added these items to the web, so they also fell into the next universe and are now being used as catalysts.
