  • Step by step instructional vid on upgrading the handle of your Penn fishing reel with the Gomexus Power Knob.
    The reel featured in this video is a Penn Spinfisher VI 4500 series, however the process is essentially the same for any Penn reel or similar brand that requires drilling out the shaft.

    I referenced this video for my install.
    The reel was the Penn Fierce 8000 for reference.
    I was all in for the drill only option. The center punch was the fix for the install. Easing the drills into the center area corrected any off center punch errors.
    Slowly fitting the new post into the old hole ensures a tight fit critical with the material left.
    The screw and threadlocker secures the assembly.

    Thank you “VERY MUCH” for the step by step video on the Gomexus knob replacement. This is by far the #1 video on how to do this right. New to the channel and I’ve subscribe, hit the thumbs up button and of course left a comment! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
    Also, just a FYI, Gomexus emailed me saying the middle of April customers will no longer need to drill out the shaft. They where just waiting on approval from Penn with their knobs.

      Thank you Dwayne, I am honored that you took the time to watch the video and leave a comment and of course subscribe. This video was born out of the fact that other videos really let me down in showing how to do this specifically for a Penn reel.
      Apologetically, I pulled all of my actual fishing video content down because the spot burning just brings too much traffic to an area post pandemic.
      Hopefully there will be some more DIY content to come, I'm more about helping the community than subs and likes.
      Tight lines and catch 'em up!!!

    I bought largest knob avail on Amazon fot my Battle III and a good friend installed for me using this video as a guide. There were challenges with install. JB Weld was needed to better attach knob stem to handle and bolts and the handle had to be filed down to make everything fit. Finished product is great and I now have a one of a kind reel. Hopefully I will be able to reel in my limit of spots when they run in a week or so. Morehead City, NC. This mod was needed due to my limited use of my left hand resulting from stroke this past January. FYI. The new Battle III DC comes with round knob. The handle is interchangeable with my Battle III. Several other Penn reel handles with round knobs are also are interchangeable.

      Firstly thank you so much for watching and commenting and I think you raise a great point. Sometimes these mods do not go perfectly according to plan and we need to use a little ingenuity to make it work ( like JB Weld ). The best part of your comment is how you shared that you are overcoming the adversity of your stroke and doing WHATEVER it takes to continue doing the sport you love. You are an awesome inspiration and I hope you slay the spots during the run. Tight lines!!!!!

Using fish bites...therefore baiting hooks, removing used mesh and taking fish off the hook are the challenges. Great video. Just done mine.
    I used brand new drill bits and I think that was a mistake.

    Good video mate I'll be making my penn reels into players right away. 3/16th = 5mm (4.8mm may be too tight and may snap the ring when bumping it in to the handle.) Both of my reels are now PLAYERS!!!! One down side The sales pitch and instructions show there being a shaft for Diawa reels separate from the Shimano shaft. This Diawa shaft was not included with the two knobs I ordered from Amazon. I did the job using the Shimano shafts, but well not very good sales information.

    Great video but this does NOT work. The Gomex kit does not have the right parts for Penn reels (Spinfisher or Slammer series). I tried to do one...I noticed you skipped over the actual putting the shaft into the handle ...because you cannot get a tight fit (not tight enough to last through even one fish fight)and end up over widening the whole to get the shaft to fit.. and the screw that goes onto the back side of the shaft on the handle - the screw head is smaller than the hole that was made to put the shaft in so it won't even secure anything--it just tightens to the end of the shaft and doesn't catch any of the handle. It looked like that was the case in the video too... Its a bad design

    • @antoinefernandez9108
      @antoinefernandez9108 2 роки тому +1

      Brian Goodhead good observation on your part. I actually watched this video even before I received my handle. I just finished installing it, I realized as I was drilling out the original handle that if I went all the way through with the bit I was not going to be able to secure the shaft to handle because of the smaller screw head so I was careful not to punch all the way through. I used one of the small washers with screws and was able to secured shaft to handle.

    • @totalnoobfishing1753
      @totalnoobfishing1753  Рік тому +1

      Apologies for the delayed response, I must respectfully disagree, my Gomexus kit came with a wide face screw that is considerably larger than the circumference of the drilled hole. I did not record that part because it was pretty mundane to watch me stick the shaft in..there was no deception in this video. You either drilled the hole too big, or used the wrong screw or did not get the appropriate screw in your hardware which could easily happen if there is no quality control with Gomexus. If the screw you have was in fact a smaller diameter, you can put your DIY troubleshooting hat on and simply use a washer with a greater circumference and then the screw.

    cool vid. noob except 38mm knob it says 5mm drill bit... whatever I wanted to tell you a little history lesson about the original penn clash reels. You either already know this or you,ll prob. say I,m full of crap. What if I told you that every model from the 2000 to whatever the biggest one was were all the same exact reel. The only thing different was the size of the spools. I thought I was missing something but what. My next move was calling Penn and explaining to them my discovery and was I right. there was a long silence but inside of my head it was like hearing awww shit, I then said is it true that all the clash reels are the same inside with different size spools. He says yeah that's right twice I tell him thanks and bye. I have never told anyone that story and always wondered if anybody else caught that. The only thing I never checked was how much more was the biggest reel vs how much did a large spool cost.Who knows maybe they were supposed to be different but around the time the clash came out Penn had their reels made in China. True Story my brother

    • @totalnoobfishing1753
      @totalnoobfishing1753  3 роки тому

      Great story Thomas and thank you so much for watching and commenting. I do not have Penn Clash, however I can confirm that my Fierce 2 4500, Spinfisher VI 4500 and Penn Slammer 3 4500 are absolutely identical inside and I can swap the gears, handles etc. so you are correct. The difference between the 3 reels is the materials that the gears are made of, cast zinc, vs CNC gears vs brass CNC gears, the quality gets better as you spend more money, like handles and materials, but it is all the same.
      Regarding the 5mm drill bit, my goal was to use a slightly smaller bit and "press" the shaft into where I bored out the handle. There are many videos and many ways to approach the installation, this was just my version.
      Catch 'em up Thomas and stay safe!
