    Why was Vader scared? Because when you're doing battle with a space wizard and he says 'Strike me down and i'll become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.' and you kill him and his body disappears completely, you'd be stupid not to be scared.

      Exactly! This one is obvious. How many jedi do we see die? Nearly all of them. And Darth killed a great many himself. When lightsabered or laser blasted, they fall down like any regular ass human being. This one fu**ing disappeared! No trace of him. No blood, no nothing. Vader knows that there is more to this than "He's dead, I win!"

      I think you're right. In ESB, Vader mentions Obi-Wan twice (I think?), which I think demonstrates how much it was still weighing on him.
      He wanted Luke to join him not just for himself as a father, but he wanted to make Obi-Wan proud in the same way Obi-Wan wanted to make Qui-Gon proud.
      Obi-Wan's sacrifice is the most powerful moment in the entire saga because of everything discussed in this video. He planted the seed of doubt in Vader that would grow -- though in a stunted, corrupt manner, at first -- into needing to protect Luke.
      Obi-Wan was Leia's only hope, but Luke would become her New one.

      Then, we discover that the "failed clone" of Palpatine had no connection to the Force because he's actually a clone of Dinn.
      A clone of Dinn who meets the daughter of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

    "Strike me down and I'll become more powerful than you can possibly imagine..." I like to imagine that in that moment Vader was mostly thinking that Obi Wan was just bluffing or being the tricky Jedi he always was - but a small part at the back of his mind had doubts and wondered if he meant what he said. His physical body had definitely become weak over the years, but who knows how powerful with the force Obi Wan had become by this moment.
    So when Obi Wan's body instantly disappeared right after saying that and giving a sly smile, only a fool wouldn't be filled with fear in that moment.

      Vader was scared because he had never seen nor expected such a thing. I thought it might be a jedi trick or something.

    Vader's story is so sad when you think about it. He was manipulated and coerced into joining the dark side where Palpatine used him as nothing more than an assassin, even for his first job (killing Gunray and the separatists on Mustafar). He was made to believe that he'd killed his one true love and his unborn children (until Empire Strikes Back when Palpatine tells him the son of Anakin Skywalker was the one who blew up the first Death Star), he had essentially nothing without Palpatine and was probably scared of being alone which is why he stayed loyal to Palpatine for so long and only killed him when he realised he had a son who actually gave a shit about getting him to redeem himself. Because of all the stuff he'd done, he started developing something of a conscience when he found out he had a son. I think that's why when the Emperor told him in Empire Strikes Back to deal with Luke, he tried to think of an alternative to killing him which is why he said "if he could be turned, he could be a powerful ally". Why would someone as relentless as Darth Vader who's slaughtered as many people as he had think of an alternative to killing one more person if he didn't have some sort of conscience.

    • @georgen5882
      @georgen5882 2 роки тому +44

      The only flaw in your argument is that in the same scene in Empire Strikes Back, Vader also says "he will join us or die." I think seeing Luke and talking to him is what did it in the end. Luke sees the good in him, the conflict, and even though he later says "It is too late for me, my son", he eventually does kill the emperor anyway. I don't know if anyone knows why, but up until the end he taunts Luke about Leia, gets him to give in to his hate until he throws his saber away and won't kill him after cutting his hand off. Who knows the real story, but it is sad. Manipulation and false truths can be a real bargaining chip. Like I say to people, even in regard to real life: Wizard's First Rule is people will believe anything because they either want it to be true or they fear it's true. If you know where that comes from then you know there are more rules than that one, I just find that one to apply to a lot of situations in real life.

      It's simple evolution from survival instinct mate. People choose to believe bullshit either out of fear or to avoid fear as the fear emotion is inherent in all animals as a way to avoid getting eaten by other animals. • @benkavanagh1229
      @benkavanagh1229 2 роки тому +54

      @@georgen5882 I think he only said that to convince the Emperor that he's still the same ruthless Sith lord he has been the whole time. If he'd just left it at essentially being like "nah, I'll convince him to turn to the dark side instead" then Sidious would've been like "no, you kill him or I'll kill you" so he had to throw in the whole "well I'll try to turn him but if he doesn't turn then I'll kill him" to keep his master sweet if that makes sense. Plus, surely Vader would've known about the Sith "rule of two" so I think he was just looking for any excuse not to kill his flesh and blood. Luke did kind of talk him round and basically say "look, I can tell there's still good in you so you might as well relinquish the dark side stuff now" but Vader obviously thought it was too late for him after everything he's done. Don't quote me on this but my theory about him taunting Luke about Leia is him once again trying to keep the Emperor sweet. Remember, there's only those 3 in the room together so when he's the only one talking, Palpatine can hear every word they're saying so of course Vader has to act as if he's fighting just another insignificant Jedi so that Palpatine doesn't cotton on to the fact Vader actually cares about Luke.

    Vader constantly rejected his past as Anakin claiming that he was weak and he killed him, that Anakin was no more, but it was Anakin's fear for Padme and deep personal hatred of his former master that made him, if Anakin was truly dead then his past would be buried with him.
    So basically we have Vader who has built himself around the pillar of vengeance against the jedi (and ultimately self deception) with Obi-Wan as its central figure, and after all these years steaming in hatred that figure is gone in a second, not even putting up a fight, the old man just kinda giving up with a smile and a cryptic message.
    There is no triumph, no vindication just... emptiness, without Obi-Wan, without the jedi, there is no Darth Vader no real goal, just the role of Emperor's executioner, something the Emperor probably knew, that letting Vader build himself as a Sith around the singular minded altar of vengeance would eventually undo him, because once that goal is realized and the source of your hatred and power is gone you've nothing left.
    In Vaders case there is nothing left for him but his service to the Emperor and self loathing for Padme's death, basically he trained him wrong on purpose.

    I think that the events in the Obi-wan show actually reinforces everything that is said here. Vader spends many many many years trying to become so powerful he can defeat Obi-wan, to be let down again, and then this third fight same thing. He spends so much time and focus, just to watch Obi-wan disappear. Vader was definitely in the feels, I honestly think that this was part of the catalyst for why he turned back to the light at the end.
    Obi-wan had just spent the last decade learning how to move into the cosmic force, he was ready for change, he was ready for the next generation to take over. He knew that both of the twins were ready to take on that challenge.

    Maybe Vader just couldn't figure out, until later, of course, what his old master was actually smiling about.(like you said) It's almost as if he knew Obi-Wan so well, that a smile like that meant far worse than he might be willing to admit, which was his(Vader's) own failure in a big way. He reasoned then as you pointed out in the video trying to figure it out. And as time would reveal, he realized that he certainly failed, not in being a sith lord servant and master, but even worse, he failed as a father...so he daddy smacked sithis to oblivion and chose to die in his son's arms surrendering ultimately to the light instead of the dark.
    Also, perhaps obiwans ghost following Vader around everywhere served as a life force to a shell of conscience that had been seared by sadness fear and hate, which of course lead to Vader doing the right thing and giant choke slamming sithis

      I like to see Vader's motivation for the rest of the original trilogy as the same motivation Obi-Wan had after the death of Qui-Gon.
      Obi-Wan's master's ghost followed him for so long. He knows exactly what kind of effect that motivation can have on the psyche.
      He looked over at Luke, and in a moment of divine confluence, he saw once and for all that he did not fail Qui-Gon, and in keeping that promise, he did not fail Anakin either.
      Here they both were. Father and son. All that time spent keeping them apart, and he realizes the only piece of the puzzle has already been handed to him. The gift Qui-Gon gave his padawan in his death was the promise he made him keep.

      I like to think that the second vader striked down obi-wan, he sealed his own fate. This allowed obi-wan to guide luke to the fullest potential, telling him to run, telling him to use the force and turn off the computer in the x-wing to destroy the death star, telling him to go to the dagobah system to learn the ways of the jedi from master yoda (who was far more powerful than obi-wan, and could obviously instruct luke better in the ways of the force than obi-wan ever could), showing up on dagobah to guide him tell him the truth that vader is indeed his father and that leia is also his sister. He could not have done all of that if he was still alive, he would have to keep hiding knowing vader was still out for his blood. Because he died and became one with the force he could use the force to guide luke without worry that he would be captured and ultimately luke would be the one to defeat vader and the emperor once and for all. Little did obi-wan know, he underestimated luke and luke managed to turn vader to the light side and convince vader to actually defeat the emperor himself. That is what he meant when he said "if you strike me down, I will become more powerful than you could possibly imagine", but he actually got an even better result than he initially planned for. And because vader had turned to the light side, he got to become part of the cosmic force. a much happier ending for all of them. This is why the original star wars trilogy was so amazing, and why the other sagas pale in comparison.

Vader was a persona that slowly built up as Anakin's defense to a lifetime of hardship and trauma that Sidious nurtured. But underneath, however weak, Anakin remained and the two constantly vied for dominance.

    In my opinion, I don’t believe that Darth Vader was fulfilled with joy by striking down his master, and that overtime it then started to dwell on him harder causing a constant confusion and discomfort. The reason for my opinion in this, is in the continuing moments of that escape scene from A New Hope, you can see Vader continuously move around and if looked closely see him trying to FIND obi wan (after striking him down). When the door closes from Luke firing the button (just to add onto my opinion) Vader takes no notice and is looking at the corner of that room/hall. For me, Vader joy was seconds, but then instantly got disrupted by the misunderstanding of Obi Wan disappearing. And started panicking in confusion. That’s when I believe Vader continued to worry.

Everyone and their mom in the galaxy knew how close Obi-Wan and Anakin were, so I choose to interpret it partly as Vader being scared his former master has a final trick up his sleeve, but there’s also a part that, deep down in his Anakin core, regrets killing him and becomes obsessed partly out of sorrow.

    You know this connects to Kenobi really well in the line that for Anakin needs to learn to let go and how that is a constant obstacle in his life since he was a child. Even well into his age he could never learn to let go and it wasn’t until his death and seeing his son before him did he release what he held onto and it took all his life to finally move on. A good arc 🙂

    Obi won in the end. He was old and knew he didn’t have much time left so he decided to let Vader strike him down with Luke watching knowing this would fuel him to destroy Vader and the dark side as a result. He also tortured Vader in the process.

    Everyone gets this detail wrong. He didn’t become Vader when they put him in the suit. He became Vader when he was knighted as Vader by Sideous.

    I'd say 1 because he literally just disappeared once hit, and 2 was probably terrified that he would come back to haunt him, not necessarily knowing he became a force ghost but perhaps in dreams or for a final confrontation.
    That's just what I think, now on with the video

    This was a great video. Thank you. I've never thought of Vader's mental state after the immediate events of Ben Kenobi disappearing. It seemed to me Vader was gloating in the victory regardless how he got it.
    The mental anguish of wondering if this was a mind trick and Kenobi could jump out of the rafters of his new space station to kill him, like Kenobi did to General Grievous in the prequels, is entertaining to think about.

    So in the end Obi wans consciousness was immortal and Vader was haunted for the rest of his life Obi wan was the true Victor in the death star

    • @seb0rn739
      @seb0rn739 2 роки тому +2

      Obi-Wan wasn't only immortal but also more power ful than even Darth Sidious. He became a part of the Force itself and could still influence the physical world if he wanted to (and did by teaching Luke).
      This is a central point of all of Star Wars: The Sith Code states that you can "break your chains" and become free by accumulating power and following your ambitions. Most Sith try to become immortal and all-powerful because the two things they fear most are being powerless and being dead. Becoming one with the Force would accomplish just that. However, a follower of the Dark Side is unable to become one with the Force. Only Light Side beings can achieve that.
      That's why the Sith Code is a trap. It lures in highly-ambitious people and makes them even more ambitious but in the end, they are doomed to be nothing more than a slve of their own ambitions. Whereas the Jedi code teaches to learn about the world, become knowledgeable, help other people, and spread joy. They are the most free.
      Star Wars is basically George Lucas telling us about his view on life.
