  • At first glance, we tend to think that events and personal circumstances in one’s life have no significant impact on history. But this is not always the case. An unfortunate and tragic event in the life of Louis de France, a grandson of Louis XV, had more far-reaching consequences than we might think.

What a beautiful child the Duke of Burgundy was. It was tragic the way his life ended at such an incredibly young age. Thank you for telling his story through this wonderfully made video.

His sister Marie-Clotilde is another interesting story. She married King Carlo Emmanuel of Savoy, who became King of Sardinia and Piedmont in 1796 but was so weak that he relied on her as a co-ruler, and after her 1802 death he abdicated. After her sister Princess Elisabeth was guillotined she went into a state of penitence and dressed simply for the rest of her life. (When she was attending a sick lady in waiting, the latter's doctor mistook her for a maidservant and she obeyed his orders!) A few years after her death, the Vatican venerated her.

Another interesting figure is Theresa Tallien, a leading socialite in Revolutionary Paris who became friends with Empress Josephine when they met in prison during the Terror. She became a big celebrity but (like Charles Lindbergh) hated being famous!

I had first learned about this prince in a biography of Louis XVI I read many years ago. I had thought at the time, what if this very intelligent and extroverted child had not died at the age of 9 and a half and lived to succeed his grandfather. Would things have been different? I asked myself this same exact question. And, I believe things could very well have been different.
Also, if he had lived who would he have married? Almost certainly it would have been one of Maria Theresa's daughters:
If Marie Antoinette's 2 older sisters had not died of smallpox it may have been one of them or possibly her sister Marie Caroline who led a fascinating life. These 2 could have been quite a couple as the King and Queen of France.
    And also, what if this prince's parents the had not died in 1765 and 1767 and lived even only 5 to 10 more years, what kind of a difference could they have made in their children's lives? In my opinion, France lost so much when all 3 of them;
    1. Louis XV's son the Dauphin,
    2. his wife Maria Josepha and
    3. their oldest son this prince
    all died far too young.
I consider all of them "what ifs" at a very crucial time in France's history. One can only ponder and speculate.
Thank you for this posting. You prepared such a well researched and thoughtful sharing of an obviously very special child.

I literally just today thought about you and wondered when the next L&H video might come considering it has been a couple weeks, so your timing is impeccable ^-^
This is probably no coincidence, but I still find it remarkable how many noble queens, duchesses, countesses, etc had the name "Maria Theresa" in sorm form or another. If I remember correctly the Von Habsburg house alone must have had a good dozen of them over time and there were some in other houses aswell. A very popular combination of names at first glance.
I find names interesting generally, diificult in some way, but very interesting. When broken down to the extreme, they are essentially designators and maybe well-wishes, but there can be so much more inside, beneath and beyond them, very fascinating.
It would certainly be incredibly interesting to venture further into that and analyse the evolution of names in European noble houses over time, but i imagine that this would also be a project of a lifetime in itself.
I notice that in the two pictures next to eachother from roughly 3:00 onwards, it looks almost as if the couple might be holding hands even though it is two seperate portraits, is this coincidence or on purprose? ^-^
In any case, they did not have much fortune initially in regards to births, so holding hands is probably a good thing to do for them.
Staying on the topic of portraits, I also notice that even the children were apparently always depicted in very very lavish and royal clothing, often with fruits and animals for example aswell. It is very fascinating, in my opinion, to see the images and connotations that they wanted to convey in conjunction with even/especially their children ^-^
I think after the losses of siblings the prince had to suffer so early in his childhood, it is almost no surprise that he has become relatively strong even in such young years.
Though what a tragedy it is to die essentially from the consequences of an accident with a wooden horse-on-wheels.
The question you asked at the very end of the video is exactly what has gone through my mind in that moment aswell: What would have happened, if this Prince Louis would not have died and lived to became king instead? How/in which ways would history have been different?
Who knows what impacts this might have had, what form of butterfly effect has been set in motion? I guess we can only conjecture.
Very fascinating to think such things through though ^-^
As always, thank you so so much for your video! I have really really enjoyed and loved it and i very much appreciate learning so so many things from you!

    • @livesandhistories

You are right. It is fascinating to consider how royals thought about names, and how they used them to reflect their status and hierarchy. Also, I think religion played a part when choosing a particular name for their children.
Well noticed by you! The couple holding hands at that moment in the video is not a coincidence. I suspect the editor played her part in that :)
I find it fascinating to “wander” through history, so to speak, and think about how one thing, one event or one person changed the course of history, for better or for worse.
Anyway, I think Prince Louis would have been a great monarch, but it was not meant to be, sadly.
I am delighted to know you find these videos interesting and learn from them. Thank for your comment and for your wishes. Life has been ok, yes, thank you.
I hope you have been keeping well. I wish you all the best.

    • @NoMercy8008

@@livesandhistories Oh yes, you are absolutely right, I have no doubt that religion played a huge part in finding names for their children and that does explain why certain names seem very very common or more common than others. I hadn't thought about that initially, thank you for that pointer!
Ahh yes, I also suspected that, it seemed too perfect to be coincidental! Very well done, a beautiful composition of portraits! ^-^
"Wandering through history" is a great way to put it. I love doing that aswell, contemplating on how certain things, big or small, would have affected the history and the people! I think one can learn a lot about our world, history and especially about people that way.
And, in a way, it's almost like playing a roleplaying game I think. Putting your mind into the position of a person and wondering about what influence a certain event might have had on their character, on their decisions, their motivations, ideas, etc.
Especially events such as the death of a sibling or child or friend or partner, like you described in this video, can and does probably have profound impact on people's views and actions.
Very fascinating, to "wander" like that.
To me too it seems that he could have been a grat monarch if he had been given the chance ultimately.
But, while following the path of this thought, i wonder... what sort of wife would he have had? What might their children have been like? They would probably have played a large part in the history of France and Europe at least, i think.
This gives me an interesting bit of inspiration:
How much did they in their times know about history? Did they have similar breadth and depth of information available to them as we do have now?
Might they have had very similar thoughts about their ancestors, for example? Were they wondering about things like "what if our great-great-great-grandfather would have been a different person, lived a different life"?
I know that back then histories and chronicles were often written either by monks or directly on behalf of the monarchs/nobles, which obviously must have had significant influence on how these chroniclers portrait the events they were writing down.
Were there also people writing down "accurate" versions of history as best as they could, without the influence of kings and gods and all that?
Again, thank you so much for your videos!
      All the best :)

@@NoMercy8008 All these are very interesting and thought provoking questions, which I also like asking myself. By doing this, I get the chance to reflect about certain events that happened throughout history, explore, piece together things, discover the truth and learn. I remember now what Cicero said about history: “To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child.”
All the best to you. Keep well.
