Live Streaming Audio - How to use an Aux Mix

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 21 тра 2018
  • In this video I'll show you how to use an Aux feed from your sound board for your live streaming audio. First I'll show you how to connect the mixer to your camera, and then I'll show you some methods for mixing on an AUX output.
    Several comments have mentioned phantom power connected to the input of the mixer. The R800 does not output phantom power on it's Mic input. (It only works with battery operated condensers or dynamic mics.) If you're camera does have phantom power on it's mic input, then you may need to use a phantom power blocker: amzn.to/2Mg9pRT

      Hi first thank you for taking the time to share all of this imformation, my Church only started streaming due to the cov 19, we have a GL4000 Allen and Heath analog desk with additional equipment eqs, effects, delays and compressors.After watching your video with the Q16 I was wondering how to go about doing the similar on the analog desk.
      Should i come from the aux on the desk into the eq then to input on the compressor and out from the compressor to the input on the camera?
      look forward to your advice

    This is gold! Great advice, as I'm a church multimedia guy. I did this for my church and had to figure all of these on my own, which took a long time. Having this video would've eliminated a lot of guesswork and trial & errors. I remember how we had to figure out how to eliminate ground loop on camcorder as well. What a hard lesson to learn, as we heard this awful buzz coming from our uploaded church service, which we couldn't get rid of. Later, we used DI box instead with ground lift, but I'd definitely try Ebtech Hum Eliminiator in the future.

    "For 90% of situations, the mix for the room and the mix for the stream are different." "You've got to think like you're mixing for a recording."
    Extra points for PANNING -- use that stereo field to sweeten up that mix!!
    Yes, Yes, Yes! Thank you so much for reminding us of the basics!! ;)
    RE: Lead Vocal getting buried, my preference is still to have the main vocal "pop" out front -- backup vox get panned / more FX.
    A criticism from my early years was that I would mix too "loud" for other peoples' tastes, so I've learned to mix from a "subtractive" approach: Instead of always thinking, "what needs to be LOUDER," I think, "What can I decrease in my mix, so other sounds are more prominent?" It's a great method to quiet a soundstage full of wedge monitors, you can reduce straining your ears in a personal IEM -- easy to quickly reduce a muddy mix.

    Great to hear you will do a room mic video, that is the stage we are about to get to. I've "hit that bell" to be ready for the upload.
    Bizarre how similar our setup is to your video, Taking a Aux from a Qu24, channels 9&10, first into a low end camcorder, then discovering we needed an attenuator (line to mic). Now upgraded to a Blackmagic TVSHD.
    The iPad control app for the Qu desk has been perfect for me to mix a stream and leave the main house PA operator to do his job.

    Hello, super great video and very helpful of what our church would like to do in the future. We currently have a Yamaha TF 5 digital mixer and was wanting to either get a separate small mixer just for the live stream as you suggested or if possible connecting the mixer to a computer with a DAW. But there's not a lot of great videos that talk about how to work a DAW. Maybe you can make a video on that in the future, as your videos are very straightforward and easier to understand than others. Thank you and keep up the great work!

    Good job! I was just explaining this same concept to a fellow church a couple of days ago. I'm going to send the guy this video. They are still using an analog mixer. I could imagine someone who isn't familiar with digital consoles could be really confused by this. Do you think you could make a follow-up video explaining the same process on an analog board?
    FYI: Your Aux output sounds like the L and R are out of phase. Toward the end, it is corrected.

    Good content. At my church we started improving our Livestream last year. First problem is low bandwidth internet connection. Should be resolved soon. The other two is dry vocals getting streamed and no AR Mics. Should resolve this soon. Not sure what you think about this been using subgroup 3&4 instead of a post fader aux send for Livestream. Drums and piano only assigned to sub 3&4. Will do the same with AR Mics.

    Thanks for this concise, informational video. Could you elaborate on how you got Aux output to be in Stereo, that too, with reverb effects? We're looking to get the sound of the keyboard in Stereo and also pan some vocalists with reverb and echo effects, but we're unable to do so in our Aux mix using the Soundcraft UI24r, a fairly advanced mixer. So I think this is something to do with the concept rather than the equipment.

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  3 роки тому

      The Qu has stereo aux sends, but essentially the same thing can be accomplished by using 2 aux outputs, and varying the volume to one or the other to pan between them.

    1. Can you adjust the levels separately for you aux sends vs the house sends? Meaning your low, medium and high pass filters plus other adjustments to the inputs. We have house mics but there are kids in the back those mics pick up and ruins the video. Also what do you use or how do you add lyrics to the bottom of the screen for those watching. • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  5 років тому

      You can try using some isolation headphones like these: amzn.to/2D6v7Fs Then use the recording each week to inform your decisions going forward. Evaluate how much low end you had, room mic volume, etc and make adjustments knowing what you heard in the headphones and what it actually end up sounding like on the recording to inform each other and help get a better mix.

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  3 роки тому

      Compression is the solution to achieve louder average levels. Unfortunately for it to sound decent it's best to apply compression at several levels (not just one on the mix bus) and that will be hard to do with an analog desk. Do you have any compressors available for you to put on inserts?

      @@BallastMedia Hi Steve.
      First thanks very much for replying and also your advice.
      The Gl4000 has sends and returns instead of the single insert.
      We has two Personus ACP 88 compressors and I use one to compressors the Lead vocals and the bvs and the other one is on the drums, but this is for the house mix and not the stream.
      Could I go from aux 9and 10 into the BSS 966 Eq and then to the compressors and out for the compressors to the Ipad? Would that work.
      Thank you very much and blessings on you and your ministry. IJMN 🙏

    1) NDI HX Camera on the iPad (connects via WiFi), previously used an omnidirectional mic connected to the iPad.
    2) OBS PC with NDI(connected via LAN)
    Last week we decided to pick Audio from the FOH Mixer into OBS and Dutch the audio coming from the iPad, there was sync issues, I tried to offset the sync using audio delay but we had situation where it synced perfectly and later got out of sync. I concluded the NDI HX connection over the WiFi is the culprit, so now I've decided to connect via LAN.
    My concern now is, we are planning on adding a second iPad for audience view, how do I manage the audio? If we sync audio for the main camera, do we have to sync audio for the secondary camera? Considering that the audio source (FOH Mixer audio) is essentially the same in OBS.

      Yes, you need to delay each input to your slowest source. If something is in sync and then gets out of sync, that's usually due to buffering. The computer wasn't able to keep up for some reason and had to buffer.

    Hello. Thanks for all the videos. I'm still having some issues with the way the live stream sounds. We are using the single camera method with the canon and the U-tap. I am also using the hum eliminator and the line adaptor. However, our live streams still give off some humming sounds. What do you think it might be? and how do you recommend we resolve this?
    We use a Behringer XAir mixer, and all of our instruments are connected directly to the mixer. Do you think that could be the problem? I saw a video where you had amps in some other room, and microphones on those amps. Why do you do that? Let me know, thanks.

    Thanks for video. How would you suggest live streaming church service from QU-24 to iphone or ipad for Facebook Live? Should I utilize usb output on mixer to device or should I use an analog output through a mix bus with xlr to 1/4" or 1/4" to 1/4"? I have direct boxes to reduce to mic level or I can purchase equipment used in your video. I realize I will have to setup usb routing if you recommend usb route. My question is not about how to set mix bus as mirrored main or independent as you have covered that very well but as a hardware question. The distance from mixer to ipad/iphone is 20 to 30 ft. Thanks

      I don't think you'll be able to run USB from the QU to an iPhone or iPad because it requires a specific driver from A&H. (I may be wrong, have you tried connecting the USB to your iPad to see if the audio device shows up?) You'll most likely need to go analog and use an analog audio interface in to the iDevice. If you can find one that takes line level all the better, I've connected a generic Lexicon audio device to an iPad and it worked.

    Help please! I have a Panasonic an AG-HVX200 and a couple of more newer small Sony camcorders. I am working in stream labs and I have been able to establish all the cameras in the feed with video and audio but I am having a lag issue. I am using my Presonus 16.4.2 AI Along with a Yamaha MG 16 XU, the latter one being our direct streaming soundboard as the pre-cylinders does not have HDMI or USB outs. We are a six piece band and we are looking to of course live stream but also to improve on the quality of our work. Our biggest issue is that we are having a lag that we can’t seem to offset even following the general UA-cam tutorials that claim to be able to fix it but have not in our case. So if you could give us any pointers on how to fix the lag issue and also how we might be able to better incorporate our personas board. We are using a Razer Ripsaw and a cheap HDMI along with a digital conversion unit to get the Panasonic feed into a digital format. So lagging is our biggest issue. We input our audio into the direct inns on cameras Which is then running to stream labs. Nothing we have done seems to help and I really did think that running it straight in the camera where it would join with the video and give us something closer to reality, but that has not happened! Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for your time

    Great videos! I am mixing for a small church that has one house board (Behringer x32). I am running my social media feed out of a dedicated mix bus aux out to a Roland V-1HD video mixer and then out to AverCaster HD. Duet Plus. I am not getting the volume I need on my pastor’s mic over social media. I am running it post fader and have to max out my aux send on his mic to the bus feed. All my music feeds have plenty of volume it’s just his mic that is too low. Thanks for any advice!

      Couple things to try. Bring your music mix down a bit, and turn your whole aux master up. Maxing out his aux send it's really a problem if you need to. Also, you can try duplicating his channel, one for house and one for video mix, then turn up the gain on the channel used for the video mix.

    Hi Steven! Been really enjoying your videos! What’s your suggestion when you are forced to be far away from the mixer and have the ATEM mini eighth inch input? I know there are some issues when you start running longer cables. Thanks!

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  3 роки тому +1

      What distance are you talking? To run audio long distances you want to run balanced, so probably the simplest solution would be to run balanced from your mixer and then convert from balanced to unbalanced for the connection to the Mini. If it's a really crazy distance, or through multiple rooms, etc then you could go dante over a network. Use this to ingest audio (amzn.to/3nu8LT0) and this to output to your Mini (amzn.to/2I2GrXu)

      @@BallastMedia Thanks for the reply! Yes, we were thinking of a longer connection that could potentially stretch 50 ft or so. Thank you for the suggestion, we'll have to look into Dante as a possible solution for audio. Thank you again for your extremely helpful videos!

    I'm confused, maybe you can help me? I have a Radial J Iso that I'm trying to use to connect a camera to mixer and I can't figure out where to plug the XLR and 1/4 inch and what adapter is needed. I'm recording video from a brand new iPad. I know I need to get an 1/8 but with the Radial J ISO I don't know if it goes in the input or output. Any help would be appreciated!

    how to use canon m50 for live streaming with stereo audio input?

  • @KingofGlorySF
    @KingofGlorySF 4 роки тому

    We running livestream mix out an Aux. We have one XLR and need to connect that one XLR to ATEM Mini Pro. I'm seeing options for dual female XLR to stereo 1/8". How do we do single XLR to stereo 1/8"?
    Right now we are running the aux from the board into a focusrite Scarlett and then that headphone into the ATEM Mini Pro. That seems to be adding an extra control/step.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  4 роки тому

      Get the dual XLR to stereo 1/8" cable. Just connect one XLR, then in the Atem Control Software go to the settings and on the audio tab there is a setting to "split" the audio on the mic inputs. What this does is change the input from being a stereo left/right with one control, to being two mono inputs that are each routed to the stereo output. So you'll get your one channel of audio routed to the stereo output.

    Hi! Ballast Media, you are a wealth of knowledge and I thank you for your efforts. That said here is a question based on this video. When you turn the reverb up on 9 and 10 for the vocals is that not the same reverb that you would use for the LR mix? I guess what I'm asking is, is it possible to have different reverb levels on the same channel for the different aux?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  5 років тому +1

      Kind of depends on the capability of your board, but in this case the reverb level is just what is going to 9/10. I could use a different effects unit for reverb in the house.

      @@BallastMedia I'm running the QU16 for the house and the live stream. As it is now the reverb is the same on every Aux as far as I know. I'm going to look into it some more. This video was very helpful. I think the long term solution for my church is going to look something like running the live stream through a DAW to get a better sound. Right now the audio quality is not great but it is working. Baby steps :)

      @@arsenaultmusic1984 There qu16 has 4 effect units. Just use one for house and another for stream. Then only turn up the return of each effect unit in the mix you want it to go to.

    Thank you for your videos, they are so helpful. My church is putting together a live stream set up but I am slightly confused. As of right now, we are just live streaming the sermon, no music. We are planning to do a one camera set up connected to a laptop. For that setup regarding the audio, would you suggest using the Behringer audio interface from the soundboard into the computer or using the set up you mentioned in this video? Also, would you suggest investing in a streaming software like VMix or just using OBS? Thank you so much!

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  4 роки тому

      Any kind of audio interface will have better sound then a cheap camera's preamps, so if your mixer has an audio interface, or you already have an audio interface, use that. You'll just have to do a little work in the streaming software to sync your audio and video, but it's not that hard and it's a one time thing. If all you need to do is stream, then OBS is fine, I would use that until you figure out something you can't do, and vMix can. Just be sure you have a decent computer, where most people get frustrated the first time with OBS is trying to do something beyond what their computer is capable of.

    Hello again! I have my livestreaming set up with 2 PCs, the AJA U-Tap (which is amazing!), and everything runs and streams at 1080p 60fps.
    My next step is to record my livestreams locally without using up CPU power on my streaming PC. I know I can split the HDMI output from my gaming PC into an external recorder (like an Atomos Shogun), but I want to capture my OBS overlays as well.
    Do you think that having the livestreaming preview on OBS set to full screen on an HDMI output into an Atomos Shogun would be a viable solution?

      Watch my video on optimizing OBS. In there I show you how you can stream AND record in OBS, while offloading one or the other encoding process to your video card. You'll need a fairly recent NVIDIA card to do it well. ua-cam.com/video/yTt5IxFWaEM/v-deo.html
