man, every forum said to put a paper clip in the harness plug in, said this, said that, only problem with that is that you lose all the other functions of the switch, but you’re creative enough to figure this out, and it allows the NSS to keep all the mentioned functions! Thank you man.
Your video helped me find out the NSS was NOT the issue, when everyone else around me said that is the issue. Saved me some money and more frustration. Finally got my XJ back running. Thank you for this video, it's a service to the XJ community. Oddly enough, no where else on the internet did it mention the fact that 12v should be coming thru that prong when in P or N, and 0 when in D or R. Kudos to you.
Thank you you won't know how much you have helped me please to continue doing these videos. I don't care if some call you hack job, know this a lot of us think your the man
You explain things just like i do lol Its kinda funny watching someone else do like i did Your doing great job Maybe slow down just little for some of the people in the back 😂 But you do great job We need to have a dex shitbox ride weekend lol
Thanks from Detroit broski! 98 sport/classic I was able to start it with the screwdriver & key inside. I was getting 12v on +pin 30 with ground on batt, I was even getting 12v on +pin 86 when the key is turned to start. I had no idea -pin 85 was a negative not positive. So I checked it with the key in, 265 millivolts. Key at start, 900 millivolts. So my switch must be bad. I have the 90$ Evan Fisher Taiwan replacement, just wanted to see if it was easier. Thanks!
When i bypass the p.n. switch i installed a universal adjustable brake proportioning vavle from wilwood for my rear disk upgrade anyways it has a switch on it for the brake lights i hooked it to a relay and ran the starter solenoid wire threw it so you can be in any gear to start it put your foot has to be on the brake
Nice dex, this is paul from Virginia oif vet, my youtube acct... I got a 98 zj and 98 xj.. My reverse lights were not working, vehicle would not turn over on the xj.. I saw another youtube clip from somewhere else, on his, those 2 plugs coming from transmission in engine compartment on side with spark plugs, well i think it was the grey plug if memory serves me right, but he unhooked that plug and put a paperclip between 2 terminals, i forget which two, it was either the two terminals closest to the locking tab on the plug or the two furthest away from the locking tab on plug. Anyhow i threw that paper clip in and reconnected the plug and it would start right up when i turned key until i had a chance to replace the switch. Tomaeto tomatto, whatever gets the job done though right? I like your methods, especially breaking open the relay and being able to crank from engine compartment. Thats pretty cool.
So this might sound crazy but I’ve driven my Jeep for about 2 months but I ran into the no crank no start just now after messing around in the snow I have a 91 and I hear the fuel pump all lights are on and I realized while watching your video I’m missing the relay you are putting the ground wire into. I’m a little confused on how it’s started this whole time with it not being there… going to try putting a ground and installing a relay
those are all good trail fixes. The only problem with installing a "permanent" ground is your reverse lights will no longer work because the ECU always thinks it in park. i just had to do this on my 96 2dr sport and my reverse lights no longer work.
Ok, this is weird. I jumped my relay and even with the key off, the engine cranks :/ it won’t start unless I turn on the key but it cranks. What am I looking for please?
Yo sec got a 96 Cherokee starts fine after sitting all night then when hot it floods out and will Roal coal it’s got a temp guage where the coolant temp sensor is I’m thinking that’s it any help would be appreciated 👍🏼
What happens when you start the rig it starts and keeps trying to turn the starter over but when I put it in reverse or drive it stops engaging the starter
On my 2000xj the no bus and engine light plus airbag ligh is on...starts but takes off very slow and uphill worst...my scanner not working. Are you familiar.
Another way it can be done as well would be pull the plug apart. Then stick a small jumper wire in the bottom of the female side of the switch and then plug it back in. Works on my 97. No cutting of wires needed.
I will also add my reverse lights work as well. Installed new switch and still got no start. Stuck jumper wire in the plug itself and jeep fired right up. Was like that when I took old switch out but didn’t think anything of it until with a new switch the jeep wouldn’t start at all.
I desperately wish someone could do a video similar to this on the 3.7 Jeep Commander. Mechanics are talking 3500-4k$ to get me situated due to an internal on trans safety switch system. And there's NOTHING on UA-cam or elsewhere in regards to the Commander on this.

Good to know for troubleshooting.

This is just genius!!!! You're the best!
Everything was 💯 percent
Keep doing what you’re doing

Thanks for the tips!
Thank you for the video. I find your content very helpful wit my 96XJ. Do you have a video on an automatic to 5 speed swap?
You are a rockstar!

Hey man. Would you please do a video on how to change the rod bearings with the engine still in? 4.0
I could. It’s pretty easy. I’ll put it on the list.
@@dexjs awesome man thank you.

If you had to do this it be a good time to put it on on a switch and you have a homemade anti theft.
Dang good thinking. 👍

Ahhh that’s forsure a safe way to do it.
Great video i need this.
Glad it was helpful!

@@dexjsdid you find out cause I’d like my lights back 😂
You should have a live q&a
I’m working on that. I hope it will work out
@@dexjs I’m certain it will, because I have a hundred questions
Please how can I get a hold of you to do work on my jeep in desperate need?
Will a park neutral switch failure cause my xj to shut off while running?
Negative
How does one buy parts from you
How do you start em and unlock the steering without keys
Can we get a video on how to put the ignition on a switch so I don’t need the key for my trail rig XJ? Make it like a buggy or race car.
Run the wire inside thru the drive side rubber grommet. Wire it from the starter relay to the switch inside the cab.

To clarify...with the jumper wire, are you jumping 30 to 87 or 85 to 87?
30-87 to make cheap connection

Help I have a 1998 jeep Cherokee with an aw4 start in park but not in neutral an the error code p0700 and p0705

Where are you located? I need the stock rear springs off one of them keeps😂

Bad pcm..
Cool I tried the cleaning the contacts on the cluster connection nothing...Also the scanner won't connect to get a possible code. Thanks
Is this neutral safety switch, the reason I can put my 2002 Grand Cherokee in any gear with the engine off and the keys out of the ignition ?
That would be the shifter locking mechanism

10-4 thanks 👍
What about on a zj?
Day 2 of commenting till Dex fixs the flickering shop light 😂
It’s good for comments 😂
Lol lack of a neutral switch got me run over years ago
First on I did run my toolbox over 😂
Dang, and all this time I've been crawling under there with a screw driver jumping the starter...
I want to buy a jeep from you if that’s ok
that's an easy remote start don't need wire running down to your starter
At 6:21 did the jump and nothing happened.
Dex sell me some seat belts for a 98 Cherokee

Now. Do the 1-2 on transmission. So you can lock it into 1 or 2 and then put it back to stock for driving in town
