I have similar feelings about the Legion Go. I think they bumped the specs but without a proper hardware and the detachable controller are a gimmick (would you really play with this small screen on a desk? What's even the point of having and handled than?). I've had a Steam Deck and sold it once I bought a Rog Ally. The Ally has been perfect so far. Performances are there, it's comfortable, compact and has a great audio and screen quality. Battery really sucks but with a decent power bank it's not that big issue and I'm using it mostly at home so that's not an issue. Also aesthetically the Ally looks much better to me but this is just a subjective thing.
Just a few comments about the points you made: the 1600p screen has the intention of people playing at 800p to upscale to 1600p with integer scaling so it will look really good. This should look better than the Ally scaling from 720p -> 1080p. I dont think the lack of VRR will be that big of a deal, it will help with tearing, but if you just lock at 60 for the sake of battery life it shouldn't be much of a factor. I think where they did miss the mark, is not having more refresh rates than just 60 and 144. The big selling point for me with the Go, much like the steam deck, was the versatility of the controls. When I had my Ally (before I returned it for a few reasons), navigating Windows with the Ally's controls was such a pain point. Having a trackpad and an option for a mouse built directly into the system is a huge plus for me when traveling hotel to hotel. I'm also excited that with the 8.8 inch screen, tabletop becomes a more legit option. Not trying to hate, I enjoy your content, just dropping my thoughts for you. I'll have to see how the LeGo fairs when I pick it up on Tuesday.
@@louisgamez1481I got mine yesterday and using the trackpad is trash. It's harder to use Windows than the Ally where it's decent. You can't use the bumper or trigger buttons as mouse buttons! Enjoying your video so far. You just asked what the Legion is going to be for: for me, hopefully the bigger screen will help me see details I was missing when playing on my Steam Deck for one. Secondly, I really enjoy playing my Switch with the joy cons detached and am excited to try it on PC games. Lastly, it will be good for me to have a portable device I can occasionally use for Windows things when I occasionally need, considering I don't have any other Windows machines.
I love how people decide to buy or not based on speculation Also all these reviews and plays are on devices that are pretty much nerfed till the release
For a first handheld, I've been thinking to just prioritize lighter less intensive games and leave the more intensive games on desktop. Who knows I might end up eatings those words and returning it, I normally wouldn't buy a device with unfinished/unoptimized software but these buys happen once in a blue moon. I sort of fell into the hype train with this thing. This video happens was the best one out of all the ytbers out there. Felt like the first real discussion on the legion go and its competitors.

just barely replaced my joysticks with hall effect on the allies went very smoothly. I didn't make a video about it because I'm not the best or well burst in the subject, but it took me about 20 minutes and they feel fantastic. Yes, there are issues with the magnetics, but not anything really noticeable.
ive seen reviews (they talk about the released specs for next handheld chips) talk about new years chip and it isn't going to be that huge of an upgrade . and 2025 ill upgrade at that time if its an actual improvement by like... a lot. so I'd say this upgrade would only be good for people who only have a steamdeck. If you have any ally already Id say theres no reason to upgrade unless ur having sd card issues and feel the screen is too small. thanks for yoru video
I have my apprehensions about the Legion but not for any of the reason you stated. I was going to cancel my preorder. Yet I've decided to wait for it to come in and use it for 60 days before making my final decision.
Also I did see someone go over the software in another video showing keyboard buttons being mapped as you are referring to for FPS games. Not something I personally have an interest in but apparently they covered that base it seems.
The rog ally kinda sucks because of the micro sd card thing. I recently sold mine and ordered the legion. The dpad and joysticks on the ally aren’t very good. The joysticks feel extremely cheap loose flimsy.
just recently sold my LCD Deck. Thinking of Getting Legion but abit conflicted actually about the size of it. And since its basically same hardware as Ally, i dont think it will run great due to bigger resolution. Locally, i have 2 different seller which one sells ally z1 extreme, the other sell oled deck 512gb, at same price. Now im really conflicted haha. I do feel wanting windows more. The linux experience and all the chores need to do on it is abit of hassle to do. (the gaming part is nice on deck but thats about it). I know the ally battery is major loss compare to Deck oled but i dont think its a big deal for me atleast. thinking of setting up the ally to run on 900p resolution, radeon chill 60-90hz just to observe the battery. Might improve it slightly.
Unfortunately we're still in the very, veeeery early days of handheld pcs... The Ally sounds soooo good on paper and it's very tempting but on real life it just doesn't make sense... Hardware issues aside, you need to push a lot of power to let it stretch its legs, which kills your battery life, and defeats the whole purpose of being portable in the first place. And even then, it's not enough power to push a 120hz screen... Sure, it has VRR but what's the point of having a 120hz screen if you're not gonna run ANYTHING at 120 fps to begin with? And then on the offchance that you can, you're tethered to a wall charger OR playing for like 30 minutes. These are just some examples, I can go on and on about it... The Deck seems to be the more reasonable one, but again, battery life isn't all that great and it's a tad underpowered if we're honest. In the end, the Switch seems like it's the better choice for portability in real life... Sure, it's underpowered, but at least I can play Metroid Prime for HOURS at 60fps. I think at this point unless you have a lot of money, the smartest move is to just wait. We really do need a custom chip akin to Apple Silicon to run these things...
I would never bought legion go. But my rog ally broke from liquid damage so I pre ordered the go. 8.8 inch screen is borderline to big for portability. Any bigger, I would have bought another Rog ally. I got a few more days to wait.

144hz is worse then 120hz when you don't have vrr. Without vrr you want to lock your frame rate to a number divisible by the refresh rate. So 120 can be locked at 120, 60, 40, 30, 24 and get a smooth experience. What are you going to lock 144hz to?
@@lte6983 Games do not let you lock to what ever you want. Most games only have a few fps options for you to select. And those numbers generally dont exist in games, where as 60,40,30 are common

Can you make a short video on Destiny 2 now ?, u made one 4 months ago. Maybe u can give yr thoughts on the Programmers/Streamers/Content Creators and CEOs. Like why things got to this point. I still play it but I can say for sure they do not make the game easy for new players to understand.(im not talking being able to understand the story) I even heard they fired the SPECIAL PVP team from like a year ago that was formed.
the legion has a bit better battery, the screen is better, you dont need to just game, the legion has better ram, the legion has hall effect stick, detachable controllera to make it like a small tablet, and so on the only real downside is the vrr screen, but vsync on and youre good to go, vrr still better though but no screen 8” with vrr available, guess thats why its missing it
So you're making your decision based off what actual data? The screen size is a massive plus, detachable controllers, hall effect sticks and higher refresh rate also add to the appeal. Asus failed in the thermals department and now every unit risks burning the SD card. Be nice if there were actual Legion videos coming out right now
Those are definitely positives but we cannot just turn a blind eye to the negatives that come along with those! Not hating on the legion, just sharing my thoughts for discussion. Thanks man
the legion go an asus rog do not have the same exact internals Don't forget to mention the better ram in the legion Also with the higher resolution Movies youtube I watch a lot of content on my hand held on the go And having that higher resolution helps I also love the tablet format My only Downside to the legion go is the no vrr
yes, you are completely correct for the sake of time numbers wise. They are very similar. It's not enough of an increased to just say let's slap 2K resolution in this bad boy because it's the internals is the ally, which in most games will still turn down to 720 P
I really enjoy your perspective on things and love the channel. Hopefully you get a deal on an open box later down the road just for the extra content. Still subbed tho don’t worry!
I had 2 different dog ally both problem slept with triggers and problems with micro sd it really sucks cuz asus rog is my favorite brand I have my laptop top rog my desktop is all built out with rog but I had to return and I’m going to try legion go
I was basically with you on the VRR issue, but I decided to turn off VRR on my Ally to see if I hated it for the games I play the most frequently, and I really didn't experience any bad screen tearing. I decided I'd go ahead and preorder it, basically with the idea of the Ally being an early "Merry Christmas" to my girlfriend and then we'll both have handhelds to mess around with. There are a few issues I have with the Ally that the Go addresses, but I will miss the fingerprint reader and we'll see if lacking VRR ends up bothering me in the end. I unfortunately have the dreaded MicroSD issue on my Ally, I just haven't felt the need to RMA it yet since I'm not using it. I likely will send it back before the warranty period ends though because I want a 100% working device. Otherwise, I'm happy with the performance of my Ally for what I play so I'm not really feeling the need to wait for next year's chips.
i feel the same way i love the ally better sound better smooth feeling vrr screen dual fans better dpad quiet buttons fingerprint reader small size and it looks cool. preordered the go but im afraid that i will get stutters trying to run big games on a non vrr display with the same z1 extreme. the thing im waiting for the most is to test the "perfect" integer scaling 800p so i can get steady frames. i got the ally and retuned the ally 3 times! best buy must hate me by now lol. im getting old and i need reading glasses so the 8.8 screen is a huge factor.
I actually have never placed an SD card there because of the thermal issues people have had with it ruining SD card, so I'm probably not the best person to ask but I've heard a lot of horror stories
If I bought a asus ally i probably wouldn't of paid $700 to get the same thing or Slightly better but I waited and I don't have an ally so I'll pick the legion go over the ally.
Not sure why all the hate when you're entitled to your opinion. You brought up lots of valid points as well. VRR is a game changer so. I don't think any serious gaming manufactures should release any product without it at this point. It makes iGPU products like this shine overall. All the haters are probably SD fanboy that ordered the GO when they talked trash about the Ally. The GO isn't perfect people. Don't like the larger screen fool you into getting this over the Ally. To me there should've been an Ally XL as well. It would've been game over for the GO of the did imo. That being said I did get my GO yesterday. I could see the consequences of not having a VRR display. If you're running a game at 144fps then you don't need VRR so much but if you're running it at 45-60fps you do. The problem is you won't get 144fps on any newer AAA games at this time. I'm keeping my GO at this time to let it mature a lil more. I do appreciate the larger screen but playing with stutters is a deal breaker to me. Using V-sync might remedy this but introduces lag. Also the GO is heavy as heck when using in bed while holding it up. You definitely need to rest it on your stomach or so.

I won't call the ROG Ally "refined" device. It's kinda underbaked.
Thanks man
I will play mine in your honor brother
the legion go an asus rog do not have the same exact internals Don't forget to mention the better ram in the legion
Also with the higher resolution Movies youtube I watch a lot of content on my hand held on the go And having that higher resolution helps I also love the tablet format My only Downside to the legion go is the no vrr
The ally and legion go has nearly the same ppi so you won’t be able to tell a different at the native resolution
yes, you are completely correct for the sake of time numbers wise.
I had 2 different dog ally both problem slept with triggers and problems with micro sd it really sucks cuz asus rog is my favorite brand I have my laptop top rog my desktop is all built out with rog but I had to return and I’m going to try legion go
You will change your mind, bet.
Have you had any problems with the ally sd card breaking?
I actually have never placed an SD card there because of the thermal issues people have had with it ruining SD card, so I'm probably not the best person to ask but I've heard a lot of horror stories
If I bought a asus ally i probably wouldn't of paid $700 to get the same thing or Slightly better but I waited and I don't have an ally so I'll pick the legion go over the ally.
You mean a downgrade in size and weight😂
Integer scaling is doing wonders for that Legion Go. Also the ram is faster than on the Ally.
Tbh I rather carry around a mouse and keyboard than use that strange gimmick doesn’t look comfortable at all
I don't find the rog comfortable to hold steam deck was awsome just limited with the games it can play.
Feel free to not buy one… doesn’t seem worth a rambling video though. Just more junk “content” on UA-cam
