I've watched several reviews on the 1120. This was the most impressive and in depth. Succinct and well articulated. This review helped me decide to get this bike...now, let's hope it's still available at the shop on Monday.
Excellent review. You gave me useful details I was curious about on this bike and it’s utility. Your language and camera shots are clear and easy to follow. Thanks!
Really clear review, Gijs - no problems with your English at all. I find many Europeans (especially from the Netherlands) speak better English than native Brits! I really like the front rack, and am hoping to have something similar built into a bespoke bike frame I am having built up. It looks very handy for keeping baggage away from the paintwork of the bike, and keeping it secure. Also, too many bikes come with shortened cables, that don't easily allow a barrel bag on the bars.
Thanks for a great review! You covered everything I wanted to know :) You also filmed it very good with good angles, comments, text on the video, small extra details. Best bike review Ive seen sofar!
I have an 1120, and several times its really surprised me what a great Mtn bike it is. it climbs amazingly, holds lines well pending tire pressure, 29+ tires have wonderful roll over. I did opt for a 28 front chain ring for excess loads and living in a mtn community i think it was a good choice. I totally agree, "The seat is awful!!" I think Trek knows everybody has a seat of choice so they threw a cheap one on. The bars are nice commuters, Mtn bike bar is wise if you plan big dirt miles but a wide dropper bar works for gravel and road. I like the fork which is very predictable with a load on it. This is the Swiss Army Knife of bikes. The bike can run a suspension fork but why. The tires do seem to have a bit of oversteer when lower pressures are used. This bike is not about speed but really fits people who like to fiddle with their ride and are looking for durability. Great review. I like the clear camera placement and lack of special affects and you get to the point well. Thanks
Hi Cool Beans, Nice Nickname! Thank you for the extensive comment and the compliments. Its nice to read a comment from you own the bike. Enjoy the Outdoors, Happy Biking and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Thank you for your info.. Do you know if it is possible to use Ortlieb Roller backs bags? and/or if it is possible to use another rear rack? Thanks a lot
Best concise 1120 review I've seen yet. I've had my heart set on getting an 1120 for months, and after seeing your review, still plan on it. Very useful information. Good English. Thanks!

I am sold.I gonna buy 1. Excellent review,excellent English.U answered all my questions about this bike.Keep up the good work.Ron from L.A . Calif,USA.
English not being your mother language may be an advantage: It's been easy to understand by the use of a very clear approach to descriptions. Going to the point: job well done !!! All aspects from the bike have been functionally covered by a straightforward analysis. Great Presentation for what seems to be a Great Bike.
Excellent video, thank you! I agree the 1120 looks like a great bike backing bike, I don’t think it would make a good dedicated mountain bike given the stiff fork with no suspension, so I wouldn’t say the 1120 is multiple bikes in one. But for bike backing, or commuting, it looks like a winner! For me, I wouldn’t bike pack without tubeless tires - you repair them the same way as a tubes tire, but you are much less likely to get a flat due to the thicker tubeless tires and the elimination of pinch flats, though you could possibly burp air out if you go really, really low on the air. And you get better traction and comfort by running lower air pressures, so tubeless is win win all around. But, to each their own. Anyway, great video, thanks for all the work it takes to put these videos together! Oh, and I totally agree about the handlebars. They don’t look like they would work for me, I would swap them out for a straight mtb style bar.
I had to turn my 1120 to the shop where i bought it. I had it only a month and I keep hearing a cracking noise coming from the seat post. They still have to find out what's causing the noise. One thing I don't like about the bike design is when you are in the lowest gear the chain is only a few millimeters from the chainstay. In some instance, the chain rubs against the rubber chainstay guard. Other than this the bike works perfectly for me.
That cracking can be from the little space between the two tubes of the post. I know this happens sometimes; dropper posts can be delicate ;-(. Chainstay rubbing... I didn't see it on the test bike and I didn't have a rubber to rubb to....
Excellent review of an outstanding adventure bike. If I ever go on a multi-day adventure bike tour (Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia & the likes) I would definitely consider using the Trek 1120. There is only one aspect Outdoorguru didn't mention that might come into consideration: The Trek features a pressfit Bottom bracket, which could be more difficult to obtain and install in distant regions than a classical BSA system. Maybe that is not such a big issue any more, and of course you could say the same about hydraulic brakes and several other parts. And yes, I agree, I would also opt for different handlebars, like the Jones H-Bar Loop. This is fitted as standard on one of the Trek's competitors, the Bombtrack Beyond +, although the latter is a lot heavier (at around 18 kg), being made of steel. In conclusion, the Trek 1120 is a sturdy traveller and MTB and very cleverly designed. Thanks a lot for the comprehensive and independent review!
Sorry for the late reply but we had a big tradeshow in NL that I needed to take care of. Pressfit... I do agree but I hardly get any complains about it for the last 5 years. Except the remark you make that you should be aware of it. Thanks for this and I will mention it a next bike review ;-)) Cheers, Gijs
The stiffer front fork gives much better handling when loaded up than a more flexible fork. It’s for bike packing, a commuter bike needs a softer more flexible front fork ! I’m putting Paul Klampers brakes on my 1120. I don’t want fluid while out in the back country
Thanks good review. I currently have a Trek Madone and what would stop me buying another Trek is they use a push fit bottom bracket which isn't that easy to replace if you work on bikes yourself.
Gijs Loning, I struggled to understand your previous reviews in dutch, but I didn't understand any word (I'm italian), so I was like toddlers who can see only pictures, unable to read. Now I've discovered your english channel, great thing. I own a surly disc trucker, a salsa vaya and a trek 520. The 1120 is overpriced to me, and in case of a crash, mechanical brakes are more reliable than hydraulic
Hi Stefano, I do understand, my Italian is not that great either ;-). Thanks for joining my channel and I hope to make many more nice videos. One of them... the Trek 920. Just picked it up from Trek. Maybe the 520 will follow too. Thanks for the comment on disc brakes. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Dear Jeffrey, Thanks so much fr this feedback. I try hard and I hope more bikes will follow but the bike industry is sometimes very unprodictable in working with me. Not a complain, something I have to deal with. Enjoy the Outdoors! Gijs
I liked the review a lot. It's very nice to see what people like you, with good knowledge thinks about a product in a sincere way. I really appreciate that. The video itself it's very entertaining, with lots of useful information and you also speak very well English, so no problem on that side. keep it going, I love your channel, soon more people will be coming here, I'm sure.
One should know is, the ball bearing of the back wheel ist very weak, Mine had top be changed after 1500 km. Ist's also hard to get replacement parts on tour because every part ist so different to average Bikes.
hello, I'm about to understand question 920, I want mainly for trips with saddlebags behind and in front secondary roads, easy mountains and asphalt and some shorter trips in light luggage mode by mountain, and I'm in love with the 920 trek, but I went to the shopkeeper of the cas trek that is exposed a 1120 and makes me a discount of 40 x one hundred in the price and I stay at about 1700 euros, but not if this bike works well or you can mount saddlebags rackpack for go quite loaded and how serious its operation, both in asfato as in the mountains, that carbon fork does not convince me, well I think in the end I will decide on the 920, but the 1120 also attracts me, I make the two types of trips both heavily loaded for two months with everything on top of the bicycle (920) and for 10 days in light mode (1120). Which one would you choose? Trips around Iceland, Mongolia, Trans-Pyrenees, Morocco, South America, Silk Road, etc.ctct. Thank you.
The trek 1120 model 2023 seems to give you the reason about saddle and handlebar shape. It is a really great review you gave. What do you think about using an H handlebar as Jones H handlebar, for example? Regarding the fork, since it is carbon base, is it too weak for sudden hits? have you heard about any complains regarding this fork?
Thanks for the nice comment but I am not sure I understand your first sentence completely. Please clarify. About the Jones H bar.... they have more than one so what model are we talking about? Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Finally pulled the trigger after more than one year of deliberation and drooling. Brought it out to the trail and felt like a Land Rover Defender of a bike 😃
Great comprehensive review. I've subscribed! This bike could be improved by having a suspension fork at the front and straight handlebars...and a knock-block on the stem to prevent damage. I have a Trek Farley 5 fat bike and what you say about the carbon fork is the same for that bike. I wish they'd just put a suspension fork on it and it would have been amazing even if it was a little weightier!
Thanks for the comment! I think something like a knock block is there. Suspension? I don't agree. It would make the bike totally different, more heavy and you could't put water bottles or cargo on the fork. Pleas react to this ;-) Cheers, Gijs
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews I just hate the way you feel everything when you go over a bump or even cobbles and cracks in the pavement with a carbon fork. I love riding my hardtail with a suspension fork and roll over anything and it absorbs it all...
I have the 1120, prior bike was Trek Remedy 8. I much prefer the carbon fork for bikepacking and touring. Off road you can air down a little but I don’t. I chose a suspension stem. Between in and the big tires, wash boards are smooth. The extra carrying capacity on the fork and stiffness while fully loaded is pure joy. You don’t get this with front shocks.
Thank you so much for this review... you mentioned it is possible to use others rear luggage systems... Can you tell me which ones? I am analyzing to by one, but it is more for touring... so I have the Ortlieb Roller backs... Thanks a lot
I am not 100% sure but I don’t think so. The carrier and the frame are very specific on mounting points and weight allowance. I am waiting for the Trek 920 and that would maybe be a better bike for you. Monday I will chech your question with the Trek guy’s. I hope that works for you. Enjoy the Outdoor and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Great review, thanks. When I first watched this I was sold. I have the opportunity to buy the new 2022 version of the 1120 and I'm wondering if you would still recommend it. I've been reading that 29+ bikes like the Surly ECR falling out of production. This looks like a fun, off road bike, but are these bikes going to be a "thing of the past" soon?
Thanks Rusty, Well, I don't know why not to recommend it and I can't look in the future what is going to happen. Maybe you have the change of buying a rare bike 😀. Enjoy the outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs.
Nice review, thanks. My only fear is the Carbon fork. I have not used carbon and we all fear the unknown! Is it as strong as Aluminium or Cro-mo? Failure mode is Splinter, not bend, and that worries me. I understand your problem with the bars, I have a Genesis that uses the same sort of shape, but they're easily changed. I'm looking to buy a new bike in the next few weeks and your review has helped this to move higher on my list. Thanks again.
Dear Steve, Thank you! The fork is a worry I do understand but... did you search on google for 1120 fork failures? After the review I did see some people with frame and rear carrier issues but not the fork. Let me know if I can help any further in your discussion. Cheers, Gijs Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe!
The carbon fork is stronger than aluminum or steel. It’s a win win. Another great thing is frame is aluminum. Today everyone seems to want steel. Stell Rusts from the inside out. 1120 is to me, almost the perfect all arounder. If it could have used a Rohloff hub it would have been perfect
Hi Hugo, You mean the 1120 does not have one and some others do? It has to do with frame strength and construction most of the time. Does this help? . Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Yes, it did! I love the C17 but that is very personal. No updates.... I returned the bike after the testperiode to Trek. It's not mine, regrettably ;-). Cheers, Gijs
Top reactie! Engels is (helaas) noodzakelijk.
Enjoy the outdoor! :-D
Great review. Your English is extremely good. Nothing I didn't understand. Love your Dutch accent ;@) But seriously €2,600!!!!! That's about €1,000 more than I thought you were going to say. The reason it is so expensive is because it is sold under the bikepacking umbrella. If it were a normal 29" hybrid without orange racks it would be half the price. SLX is good but not that good! I have one of the first Trek 7500 hybrid from about 1998 with Alpha SL Aluminium frame. It is very stiff and strong as the tubes were over size. It too had SLX or LX components back in the day, but it cost me about €300 new!!!!! The spec is now Shimano XT with handbuilt 700C x 35 wheels. I would not swap it for anything as the aluminium frame is the best thing Trek did, although I do not like the look the carbon fork on the 1120 today. They should have gone with aluminium or Cromoly, Also the Trek 1120 looks like a rival to the Specialised AWOL which I think has better long distance touring potential certainly better racks and can carry more. Their front pizza rack is a gem. I don't own one. Could you do a review of a similar bike to the Trek 1120 but with Rohloff hub or pinion gearbox preferably with Gates belt drive? But great review. I am already subscribed to your channel.
Alex, Thanks for the feedback and the compliment on my English. Price.... I do understand but I asked some guys here and they though it was 1000 more ;-) The 1120 is based on the Stache and that one is way more expensive. I compared the two and with a 'less' components you get a more versatile bike. The Awol is a more like the Trek 520: trekking bike with value for money. I tested the Awol in 2015 and it was a great bike. But price... always difficult. And now I am off to bed: was a long day. Thanks again for the feedback and the follow! Cheers, Gijs
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews I defer to your greater knowledge and experience. But for me it is too expensive for what it is. Your review was very thorough. Many thanks.
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews Raleigh ...... there's a British brand from the past. I used to have a Raleigh Carlton. Lovely bike but it simply rusted to pieces from the inside as it was a steel frame. Head tube lug totally broke. In contrast my Trek 7500 frame is still in very very good condition, but it is aluminium. Trek build quality is fabulous. I also have a Trek road bike again very good build quality with Ultegra group set. But now I am into IHG Rohloff and possibly Pinion gearbox bikes. Much more practical for real world riding every day riding. Thanks for replying.
Great job, Gijs. Trek should’ve used this review as an official video for 1120. Is there any video or info about tools required for changing/ adjusting stranglehold dropouts? Thanks
Hi Muhammad, Thanks for the compliment and sorry for the late reply! Holiday time here and I am working on my Landcruiser to get it 100% again. I am not sure I understand the question: what do you want to change? Did you read the article about the bike? Maybe that helps. Otherwise: let me know and I'll dive into your question but I need a bit more info. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Gijs
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews Hi Gijs, thanks for your reply. I am talking about 4:11 to 4:27 which is changing the dropouts from rear to front and vice versa. Thanks & enjoy your holiday.
@@muhammadajjan2310 Ok, this is what you mean. No, you don't need special tools for this. Just a couple of wrenches and one right and left hand. It's not complicated. In The Netherlands most normal regular used bikes have a similar system only not that beautiful crafted like the one on the Trek. Just give it a try and if you don't feel sure about: let's FaceTime ;-). Cheers, Gijs
That was a really great review I learned allot about the 1120, one thing I noticed is @2:08 you could say "more on that, later" it would flow smoothly like a script :) hope that helps I'm subscribed :)
Thank you Jaboni! Just because of easy repair without hassle when I I break one. But.... maybe this is just old fashioned gut feeling instead of pure rational thinking.... Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Dear Michael, Thank you for the thumbs up ;-). Kickstand... The most logical place is de left rear next to the axle. But.... I think you should refrain from this because I am not sure the bike frame is up to the torsion at the rear when fully loaded. Otherwise discuss with Trek. Sorry I can't really advice a clear solution on this. Cheers, Gijs
Hi In your opinion, will the carbon fork runs the risk of hairline crack after a couple of years compared to if its aluminium or titanium ? I am considering getting one
I never had any problems with carbon frames or forks except when it hits something sharp edge or corner. And once on a sailboat the mast snapped.... So the answer should be no. But... I don't care about the weight 'advantage' or the looks so I would always buy the aluminum one....Does this answer your question a bit? Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Gijs
Dear Andreas, For this kind of bike it is not realy needed. The reach of the one in front and the 11-46 cassette is enough for most climbs. Off course depending on what you want to do with it.... Does this help? Cheers, Gijs
Hi, Great video, could I ask a quick question. Could the 1120 be used for a bike tour like the LF1 North Zee route? Or would a gravel bike better? Trying to decide between the 1120 or a Marin Headlands. Would you ever consider doing a comparison video trek 1120 vs gravel bike? Would love to see that if you have time.
Hi David, Time is the problem. I would love to but a bike review takes so much time.... I don't know why the 1120 woud not be a good bike for this. Maybe a bit on the heavy side and a gravel bike would be more easy but not if you like mountainbiking or want to go on some other adventures ;) I'll give the comparison a thought but don't expect t soon.... Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Gijs

Hello, nice and exaustive review. I was and still be interested, but the price at the moment is very high. Around 3400/3500€. So my question is: would you buy this bike now?
Yes very expensive! I found one here in Italy. Size M sold very quicly. There is an XL too. I don't understand the logic on that price! Ok it's a particular kind of frame, but i think the right price could be 1000€ less then actual. And yes is gone out of the collection...

Well I don’t like the mess of the stuff inside the tubeless to repair leaks. In my shed it is sort of not a problem when changing tires but in the wild I just don’t like it. When things go wrong with a packed bike I like the replacement of a tire and a tube better. But yes, that is personal and if you like it that way keep using tubeless😄. Cheers Gijs
Dear Tin Man, In wat relation? The tires are big and you need to play with the tire-pressure for your personal perfect sweet spot. Also in relation to what you carry. 3.00 is wide and for a bit more efficiency as a 1120 'trekking bike' a bit smaller would work too. Is this what you are referring to? Cheers, Gijs
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews I'm thinking more of the maximum diameter of the tires and its effects on handling rough terrain. I'm shopping for a hardtail trail bike and the Stache 5 looks interesting to me though I haven't had the chance to ride one yet.

Dave,it's fantastic review on that 1120 bike...tnks Dave!

Hi Flatheadfletch, True! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the brakes😄. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Thanks good review. I currently have a Trek Madone and what would stop me buying another Trek is they use a push fit bottom bracket which isn't that easy to replace if you work on bikes yourself.
Thinking about Trek Procaliber/Cannondale Trail SE 3 and this bike. Procaliber is lightest but i will have to take things into backpack.
Hi Andre, What is the problem with a backpack? I use a backpack on the 1120 too when needed. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Awesome review. You talked about the important things and answered all of my questions. I wish more reviews were like yours.
Dear Jeffrey, Thanks so much fr this feedback. I try hard and I hope more bikes will follow but the bike industry is sometimes very unprodictable in working with me. Not a complain, something I have to deal with. Enjoy the Outdoors! Gijs
Great video, and I appreciate the review! You've helped me to decide to get the 1120!
Hi Griffin, Thank you! Have fun with the bike 😀🙏. Cheers, Gijs
I have the Trek 1120: Your review is a good one. All in all it is a really great bike. 4.5 / 5 is a worthy rating!!
You make me smile ;-)
I liked the review a lot. It's very nice to see what people like you, with good knowledge thinks about a product in a sincere way. I really appreciate that.
The video itself it's very entertaining, with lots of useful information and you also speak very well English, so no problem on that side. keep it going, I love your channel, soon more people will be coming here, I'm sure.
Thank you so much! Spread the word ;-)
One should know is, the ball bearing of the back wheel ist very weak, Mine had top be changed after 1500 km. Ist's also hard to get replacement parts on tour because every part ist so different to average Bikes.
Thanks for sharing Stefan. You are the first to comment this. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
hello, I'm about to understand question 920, I want mainly for trips with saddlebags behind and in front secondary roads, easy mountains and asphalt and some shorter trips in light luggage mode by mountain, and I'm in love with the 920 trek, but I went to the shopkeeper of the cas trek that is exposed a 1120 and makes me a discount of 40 x one hundred in the price and I stay at about 1700 euros, but not if this bike works well or you can mount saddlebags rackpack for go quite loaded and how serious its operation, both in asfato as in the mountains, that carbon fork does not convince me, well I think in the end I will decide on the 920, but the 1120 also attracts me, I make the two types of trips both heavily loaded for two months with everything on top of the bicycle (920) and for 10 days in light mode (1120). Which one would you choose? Trips around Iceland, Mongolia, Trans-Pyrenees, Morocco, South America, Silk Road, etc.ctct. Thank you.
Mansur ginory tabraue Dear Mansur, I’ll give you a more detailed reaction tomorrow. But why not a steel bike? Cheers, Gijs
Great review and your review in English is excellent. Thanks for the details covered. Look forward to watching your channel.
Dear Sandor, Thank you for the compliment. Working on the ISPO 2020 right now. First part maybe tonight online. Cheers, Gijs

The fork.... I did not get any complains.
Finally pulled the trigger after more than one year of deliberation and drooling. Brought it out to the trail and felt like a Land Rover Defender of a bike 😃
Nice! And congratulations. Happy biking! Cheers, Gijs
How’s the bike treating you two years on?
@@mrsbaylocksvideoemporium9621 I do understand but... it is a matter of pressure in the tires in this cas. Yes, I love my mtb with suspension too ;-)
I have the 1120, prior bike was Trek Remedy 8.
Why some Trek have a small triangle on the frame near the seat and others don't?
Hi Hugo, You mean the 1120 does not have one and some others do? It has to do with frame strength and construction most of the time. Does this help? . Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Well put out and comprehensive review. Very informative, congratulations.
Great review! Did the Brooks C17 Cambium saddle make a difference? Any other updates now after a year and a half?
Yes, it did! I love the C17 but that is very personal. No updates.... I returned the bike after the testperiode to Trek. It's not mine, regrettably ;-). Cheers, Gijs
Top reactie! Engels is (helaas) noodzakelijk.
Enjoy the outdoor! :-D

Could you please tell me how you fix those harness holsters to rear rack?
Dear Marcin. I think it was velcro. And that worked fine. Does this help? Enjoy the outdoors! Gis
Outdoorguru There is dtrap velcro but also 4 loops and I dont know what to do with them. I need to contact trek
Great review. Your English is extremely good. Nothing I didn't understand. Love your Dutch accent ;@)
But seriously €2,600!!!!!
@@alexmorgan3435 Alex, Greater knowledge, I can be wrong though. I remember my old Raleigh Maverick with racks. Was about 300 euro's ....

@@muhammadajjan2310 Ok, this is what you mean. No, you don't need special tools for this. Just a couple of wrenches and one right and left hand. It's not complicated. Thank you for the review! Very well done. Can you make any recommendations on kickstand? I am struggling to locate a stable solution.
Gijs
Why is there no gears in front? Is that a problem? Thx
That is expensive..... where do you see it because it is out of the collection....
Yes very expensive! I found one here in Italy. Size M sold very quicly. There is an XL too. I don't understand the logic on that price! Ok it's a particular kind of frame, but i think the right price could be 1000€ less then actual. And yes is gone out of the collection...

New to bike touring. Why wouldn’t you go tubeless? Been running tubeless for about three years on my MTB bikes and I’ve never had a flat.
Cheers Gijs

Do you think those 29+ tyres are too big?
Dear Tin Man, In wat relation? The tires are big and you need to play with the tire-pressure for your personal perfect sweet spot. Also in relation to what you carry. 3.00 is wide and for a bit more efficiency as a 1120 'trekking bike' a bit smaller would work too. Is this what you are referring to? Cheers, Gijs
