Thanks a lot I just brought me 2012 focus SE and got it service today and he told me about the TMC. Thank God it’s not over 1000.000 cause i Got nervous like hell. Thank you for the video man
FOCUS 2012, if you haven't experienced TCM issues symptoms doesn't mean you're in the clear. I found out the hard way, being stranded at an airport garage and waited 6 HRS for a tow. Make an appointment at your nearest dealer ASAP and fix it. Traction control lit up, radio shut off, car wont start, transmission indicator on dash gets wacky. Come to find out the dealership is backed up, TCM parts on back order and will take a minimum of a 2 week to get it replaced if i'm lucky coz they have a ton of other cars with the same issue. Drove a Toyota for 10 years till i wrecked it, figured i'd try a Ford, well guess its back to either a Toyota or Honda.
thats why i own old ford trucks less to go wrong. cars now a days is getting to complex and nothing is done by physical connection like a cable or rod.good video
mack1ford unfortunately government like in uk pass laws so you get rid of old cars or tax them high do you are forced to buy new or newer thus keeping car companies in big business ....Too big to fail rather then focusing on being green same with everything these days even phones lol
My 2015 Ford Focus has had issues since the first day I bought it. Everything from violent lurching, going into neutral sometimes while accelerating, and yesterday when my car was going into second gear it violently grind and jerked into the gear and a transmission fault service immediately popped up. I called Ford roadside assistance and it would've taken two hours so I limped it to the dealer. When the dealer turned it on, the light went off and drove normal. I've had this car for 5k miles now and I bought it brand new. It's been at the dealer every month since I've owned it in September 2015. It's stayed overnight once already and it's at the dealer again and I won't know what's wrong with it until two days from now. I love the car, I hate, HATE the transmission. I will try to convince the dealer to give me a manual Focus and they take this clunker back that I paid almost 30k for.
+Garrett McKie I have the same feelings, love the car but wish I got the manual transmission. I would just get a lemon law lawyer if they say no, you will win with lemon law and get all your monies back.
I have seen other vid where the erros clear magically. My bet is this was done on purpose in the transmision software to fool the owner when they try to complain in the dealership. "No errors, nothing to fix. Thanks you!!!!".
When Ford introduced the gearbox, they said it was maintenance free for 100,000 miles. NOW they say you have to change the transmission oil and filter every 30,000 miles, using specialist equipment at a cost of 150 UK pounds. clearly this gearbox was never tested in the real world, but on some bench somewhere. we have been lucky with our Gearbox so far, the only issue we had was a transmission failure on the dashboard one freezing cold morning. after switching off and back on again it was OK. a new battery fixed that problem in the end.
Mine just failed out of the blue the other day. It's done the "shudder" since I bought it three years ago. Thankfully my car has under 100K miles, and is still covered under the extended warranty that Ford put out on these cars. Great little hatchback, I've gone on numerous trips of over 1000 miles round trip in it... The downside is that the part is on backorder, and I was told minimum of 15 days. Hoping the warranty provides for a rental car while this is getting resolved. I am going on a trip in a few weeks, and I need my car:-(
Mine went out JUST under the warranty. They extended warranty from 100k to 150k if I remember correctly. They told me it was the tcm and that there would be no charge. Ended up being the TCM and the clutch. Cost me $1600. That lasted for probably 30k miles when the TCM went out again after my alternator went out and fried almost everything electronic in the car. I went to the local pick-a-part and pulled one out of another focus after Ford wanted $1200 for parts and labor for the TCM. I slapped it in the car in my garage, and it was great until it again went out. It was probably an original TCM that I pulled out though. Lasted another 10k miles until it went out again. I’ve gone around a few junkyards to look forward another TCM and have yet to find another one. It really is very simple of a job. Couple things to move out of the way, a few bolts to take out that hold the module in place, a wire harness to unplug from the module ,and it literally pulls right out, and the new one goes right in. The module needs to go through the “learning” process afterwards.
just did one on a 2014 fiesta. had the control module performance code, and u0101 lost com with tcm. it caused a no start issue though. no shifting issue, when i turned the key on to read codes the trans clutches would be shuttering for a minute or so.
Do you have any how to videos on how to go change a TCM on a 2013 Ford Focus SE? Or do you know what to do after you swap out the TCM for a newer one? Is it the TCM Adaptive Relearn service? Thanks
What if you have a new TCM and new clutch pack in a 2013 and still have bad trans performance, loss of power, overheating trans, etc? What could be the problem?
@@FordTechMakuloco here in Florida yes. Last week another dealer I originally spoke to gave me bad info saying the warranty was out. Luckily I called the dealer where I had the last recall work completed pleasantly surprised me with news that the warranty is 10/150k and the TCM is covered still and that they had the part. That was a major factor for me as to if I planned on keeping the car or trading or sell it. It’s a clean car and it was maintained very well. Runs like a champ minus the transmission issue and the failed recall repair on the passenger door. Nothing like the passenger door flying open on a right hand turn when driving lemme tell ya 🤣
@@christianc1313 both cutches actually. There are 2 which makes it that much more annoying and expensive. Very smart to wait seeing they will have to break the trans down completely anyway. It’s not a tough repair and the tools along with the computer/software to synchronize it and align the actuators is the stick point where you need a shop to complete the work.
2013 focus clutch actuator has failed twice for me (less than 40k) P0902. the subject of class action, Ford essentially has admitted the car blows chunks. Although I have a 7 year warrantly with a deductible, they fix for free for me anyway. I can no longer trust this car to drive anywhere
I have got the shuddering problem with our 2014 Ford Focus, but after experiencing the B.S from the Ford dealership in Victoria B.C "we will never be going back to them, they suck.
FYI - if you’re unlucky enough to own one of these like me… Just wanted to let you know that Ford has extended the warranty on the TCM until 120,000 miles. They won’t replace it unless certain codes are coming up but worth looking into if having problems. 🔧
Mines been at the dealership for 3 weeks. It has 190k miles and they are gonna replace it if they ever get the parts in. Not sure how long the back order line is.
Mine is at the dealer too. I had to wait until the transmission completely failed before they did something about it because it wasn’t throwing the right codes required for the extended recall? Are you in a loaner car? My dealer didn’t have loaner cars and they said something about contacting Ford to get reimbursed for my rental. Not holding my breath, but I’m not gonna be happy if it takes three weeks plus to get the part! I was told that they have agreed to extend the warranty to 150,000 miles but also will fix any car before I think July 2025.
i have the same thing with my 2014 fiesta, i’m not good with cars but i’m learning a little more but haven’t seen this video all the way, i hope it works
Hey bud..so I had to get a reman TCM for my 2017 Ford Focus from china..no way in getting one in the states right now. The dealership said I needed a new TCM so bought one that says it was already programmed 2.0L focus..I installed it today and it drives like the old TCM was in there..rough shifting…is it plug in play or anything else I need to do? From what was told to me from the dealership I just replace and drive and it will calibrate…the check engine light came on but not sure what the code is for now.
My battery went bad and after replacing battery these codes popped up. Keep in mind I have 14,800 miles on a 2017 focus SE so the car hasn’t been driven much. Upon starting after battery replaced there was an odd clunk as I began to pull forward and I thought I had ran something over. Looked around my car, everything looked fine. Put it in drive and began to pull out of driveway. Soon as I entered the Main Street I realized the car was in limp mode and not shifting out of 1st gear. At that time I dropped it manually into L and accelerated and manually back to Drive and it shifted this time. I pulled it into mall parking lot a few blocks down the road and found an open area at which time I realized that I had no reverse gear. Reverse acts like it’s in neutral. No engagement at all. Clearly the low voltage was an issue. Visually looked at fuses and nothing stands out to me and the first two codes listed below are the only two hard codes that return. Anything I should check before dropping it off for warranty work? 1. P2837 transmission shift fork B position-circuit range performance. 2. P287B Shift Fork Calibration not Learned. 3. (Previous Code P0882) Transmission Control Module power input signal low.
Did you ever figure this out? I often heard if the battery dies, one of the gears start 'hunting' until it doesn't have anymore power, which ends up breaking a part of the transmission casting that tells the transmission what gear it's in. The car I have has a similar issue, and I want to know if it's still the TCM or the transmission that needs work.
I'm confused on the Auto Manual please explain how it is able to do so and can a car be converted is it the same transmission just different control computer
Wow, over 30 years in the auto repair industry. I have never seen a module with splines to actuate transmission shifting. Which Ford engineer designed that and sold it as a good idea? First time I seen a PCM bolted to cooling plate with fuel running through it on a diesel engine I thought that was a stretch, but it works. I bet the Ford techs at dealer see those Fiestas coming and say " it needs a ground repair, tcm flash or replace and replace transmission".
I’m in Australia and I purchased one in 2011. My granddaughter has had it for 3 years and the car just stopped in the middle lane of the freeway. There was no forward forward movement but it still works in reverse. Dealer states the module is faulty and cost of replacement is $A 1500.
Have you heard of any instances of a faulty TCM causing the transmission to stay stuck in 1st gear? It's a 2012 focus if that makes a difference or even damaging anything internal to the transmission?
My mom has a 2014 focus with around 30 thousand miles. She has only owned it for a few months. It has always had a shudder and slip in first gear. Trying to get going from a stop is a pain. If you go really slow and easy it will be OK most of the time, but if you try to drive normal, or have a lead foot its bad. I was looking to see if it had any codes with my snap on ethos. There were no codes? I then saw then was a relearn process for the clutch. I went through with the commands and then went for a drive. The issue became worse and now there was also a gear noise in 3rd. And the shifts happen quicker. I broke it back and did a relearn on the drums. This made some of the gear noise in 3rd go away but not all. It also has two codes present now. Which I neglected to remember. Though one was for something about too high of speed. The other was a U code. The engine light is not on. Any suggestions??
I also have a 2014 focus, I'm going to have it taken to Ford in the next couple of days to fix a bunch of random idling problems and slipping going from first to second, and after I get this car fixed I'm going to immediately sell it. Shame shame shame on Ford for selling this piece of s***
Currently the TCM, at least for my 2014 Ford Focus SE, is on national backorder. Ford website has this part currently listed listed for $383.19. Great news right. So now my car has to sit at the dealership for God knows how long. These folks don't even provide a rental. I was told they got rid of their loaner fleet a while back. Called another Ford dealership and was told they do have a few out but would only consider it if the vehicle had a warranty repair that would take longer than a few days. Go figure.
we've waited 3 weeks for our car and now they're saying its actually a clutch actuator. no rental was given and the call backs were horrendous. ford is such a leech on the working class.
@Fordtechmakuloco is it possible for low voltage to the tcm to cause internal transmission damage? Dealer claims tcm is good, but low voltage caused damage and the transmission needs an "overhaul" for $4k+. After watching your videos I suspect the tcm is bad (or bad clutch stuff??). The trans makes lots of clicking sounds, says it's not in park when shifted. It doesn't engage reverse and wont shift to second (stuck in limp mode). Codes -2837 shift fork b position circuit range performance -287b shift fork cal not learned. -074a unable to engage 2nd gear The internals of the trans seem rather "simple" and I do not understand the claimed damage would happen. Thanks for any help, Mike
Don't matter what you do with the TCM out now they will all fail eventually. You can't fix this issue no matter how much you try. I'm hoping Ford actually create a new part specifically for these cars because just replacing the old TCM with new ones will result in the same failures of the old one. My car just sits in the parking lot until Ford finally has the part ready. It is a great car other than their mistake.
@maksim bond Sorry for the late reply. I sold my Focus last year. I'm in a Camry now. When I had the focus, the car kept stalling until it stopped altogether. It stopped on me in traffic and again with my gf driving. I had to let it go. Great car except for the deadly issue Ford should have fixed.
My sis refuses to buy automatic ever since she shared Acura V6, which was notorious for tranny problems, with her boyfriend in late 90s (have nothing against Honda, most of our cars are actually Hondas, which I like to work on, but manual gear box).
I have problems with the TCM Before and the ford dealer replaced the part and reprogram.. But now I have new problems , no reverse, 2 and 4 gears .. I find out is the clutch actuator B .. I want to replace it my self but I don't know if it needs to be reprogram .... 2014 focus ...by the way thanks for your teaching videos...
Our Ford Focus (2013) had these issues and we had the computer flashed and that was not enough to fix it. So they replaced the TCM. Six months later the transmission started doing the same stuff again and in addition it is getting a "Transmission Hot" warning and says "allow the transmission to cool down before operating". We took it to the Ford Dealership and they are saying that this is a different issue that is NOT covered by the TCM problem and they want to charge us $2500 to fix it. The dealer says it is the shift actuator that needs replacing. This does not seem right! Has anyone else had this issue? Is this caused by a faulty TCM?
+Black Anvil Construction Supplies Well it depends on which actuators they are replacing. The clutch motors are external and not covered but should not cost that much and the two shift motors are inside of the tcm which they already replaced so I am not sure what they are going after here.
+FordTechMakuloco we are having the same issues as before when they replaced the TCM and the Ford Dealership said that the shift actuator can cause all of those same issues (shuddering, no start, stuck in gear, slipping while in gear, high revving, etc)... We told them that we were having the same issues as when they replaced the TCM yet they are very quick to dismiss the possibility that it is the TCM and they state it is the "shift actuator". I asked the Service Advisor Mike Coody at Gwinnett Place Ford if the shift actuator is part of the TCM and he said he didn't know but that it is a separate issue and not covered under the TCM warranty. My reasoning was that if the shift actuator is part of the TCM that it should be covered under warranty since they replaced the TCM for us just a few months ago. What am I missing here?
+FordTechMakuloco Are there any "shift actuators" that are outside of the TCM? My understanding from your video and from other sources is that the shift actuators are part of the TCM and therefore included in the replacement warranty. Can you confirm or deny this? This is very important to us and I am sure to others.
+FordTechMakuloco I would also like to know the answer to this question. If the shift actuator is part of the TCM, it should be covered under the TCM warranty right? +ford #ford #tcm #warranty
HI Brian Good Day, Can you help me with my 2011 ford fiesta 1.6L A/T. I encountered this while i'm driving going to work. When I tried to step on the accelerator the car is not responding, i thought i was in neutral.I tried to park it and it responded again. As I started the car, Check Engine Light appeared. I scan it using my OBD2 scanner and the error is P087A(Clutch position sensor B - circuit malfunction). I tried to reset the faults and everything, It was cleared and i test drive it. It run smoothly for about 30 minutes, then all of a sudden the transmission disengages again, while stepping on the gas nothing happened, i tried to slow down by stepping on the brakes and stopped completely and the transmission engages back again, i parked the car and do reverse and nothing happened. I tried to run the vehicle again so I can go back home and it runs smoothly with Drive position and then when i turned off engine and started it again,Check Engine Light appeared again and car was now in Limp Mode. I've noticed when the car's temperature is fresh off the start it runs smoothly, and then problems start to arise as the engine temperature started to build up. What can you advise me with this problem? I hope you can help me with this.More power on you and your page. Many thanks.
I have already removed the painted area for better ground connection after watching your previous video, but the TCM still died on me (no start condition, stuck in park etc). I was wondering, could jump starting the battery potentially damage the TCM? I have read from different forums that their TCM died after a jump start. I remember doing the same before the TCM died.
After seeing your comment it’s got me scratching my head lol. I cleaned my grounds because I kept getting hill start assist unavailable, then transmission hot wait 5 mins, then traction control randomly turned off by itself, oh and also would have to turn the key a lot of times before it would start. While cleaning my grounds it sparked a whole lot while reconnecting. Now it shifts terrible and says clutch A is stuck. I wonder if all that sparking fried or shorted out my tcm. These focuses are a headache. Had mine since new and now have 167,000 on it. Trans repaired twice already can’t get a break with these cars.
@maksim bond yes, at first I was able to start the car from the fuse box. In the end, it turns out it was a faulty TCM which prevented the car from starting.
I need help I have a 2014 focus titanium I had a check engine light code p0902 I already change the clutch actuators but now after driving it said warning transmission getting hot an the same code came back p0902 for clutch actuators do I need to change the tcm too
I have a transmission in my shop that has the P2831 - P2832 - P287B trouble codes. I have tried to reprogram using Forscan and doesn't complete the learning procedure, is there a mechanical problem with the transmission? It's the first time i had one of these in my hands and i'm lost...
Thank you for the informative video. Ford just replaced my TCM. What is the difference between the previous TCM and the replacement TCM? Is it a permanent fix or its just a temporary fix that I need to sell my Ford focus 2012 asap. Thanks
Was the repair covered under the Ford's "extended" powertrain warranty on the Ford Focus DCT transmission issues? If not, what did they charge you for replacement of the TCM? My 2012 Ford Focus just stopped working today in a parking lot. It would not start up. The monitor screen was showing "Parking Aid Malfunction" message. I had it towed to a dealer and is waiting to hear back from them. The dealer said I have to pay a $220 diagnostic service fee. This is in NJ.
@@choyrl Im from Australia. Everything is free of charge from scanning to replacing my TCM. I had similar issue with my Ford fiesta in the Philippines and it is also free of charge. I suggest you contact Ford US and tell them that Ford NJ is charging you for the scanning which is not justifiable since Ford focus 2012 is part of the recall. If the problem is not TCM, then they have the right to charge.
@@ballsy14 Hello to you in Australia and Thank you so much for your reply. I will definitely call Ford USA on this. Curious if you had the same issue and warning message as I had. My car will not start in Park or in Neutral and monitor was flashing "Parking Aid Malfunction". This happened this afternoon. No issues prior to today. Car is at dealer now and will not be diagnosed until next week due to shortage of mechanics at dealer because of Covid.
@@choyrl While on park, a message "Transmission Malfunction. Service Now" popped up on my dashboard. I can still drive it but the gears was not engaging properly so its difficult to accelerate. Sometimes the reverse gear is not working. If TCM is the problem, they will waive all the charges . If other component is the problem, they might charge you due to wear and tear.
@@ballsy14 Hello ballsy14, just wanted to let you know my 2012 Ford Focus was repaired today. The NJ Ford dealer replaced the TCM free of charge as covered by the extended warranty program under Ford Customer Satisfaction Program 14M02. All seems to be working normally now on my Ford Focus. Thanks for your help.
Even though P0700 code is triggered, Ford dealership claimed that the TCM warranty doesn't cover P287B. In other words, no correlation. Agree or disagree?
I have a 2013 focus se 2.0l won’t start after i drive it. I checked battery was good, put new starter, new relays on starter and Ignition relay and new negative battery cable. I also used the other key. Also it seems when it warms up and gets driven it don’t start. But when it cools it seems to start again. I’m stumped! Any pointers?? Thanks in advance Great video!!!
TCM was replaced on my 2014 focus at 1300 miles. Rough shifts and on a warm day in summer, car would not go into reverse. Seems to be fine now, just some clutch chatter on cold days.
It's also an issue on the focus.id add to the concerns engine over rev and over rev dtc,and no crank no start after shut off because PCM is not seeing park/neutral input from Tcm.
We've also found this issue a lot in Thailand.Unluckily for me and many people found this after out of warranted(3 yrs).the cost for replacement is about 730 USD and "we need to pay ourselves" No responsible from FORD.We think that It's too fast for us. compare to other brand.
I bought a 2012 Ford Focus (LW series) brand new. The transmission/TCM has been replaced twice (under warranty). The current transmission / TCM is only 4 years old. All seems fine (aside from the occasional 'shudder' when coming to a stop).
Ok just got a 2012 focus for my daughter. It has a slow 1st to 2nd shift then will throw code and reverse will go away. Did grounds test ran and shifted great for about an hour of in town driving then started doing the same thing.
hello friend i have a focus 2012 change tcm and double cluch but do not let me calibrate drum and cluch you know if the gears of the drump have be synchronized when installing tcm module
Brian, Thank you for all of the videos, they are helping me out! Question though, I have heard you talk about symptoms so If I could I would like to ask you a question. My 2012 For Focus has been to the dealer twice. The first time I was in for the trans service and I was told that my shutter issue it was the TCM and that is was warranted for up to 150K, mine has 120K but that I needed to make an appointment for a later date. I made the appointment and that day I was told that I needed a trans rebuild which would cost me $3K. The morning on the way to the dealer the car shifted great but one time before the appointment and now twice after the appointment I have had to rescue my daughter from being stranded on the side of the road or parking lots. The car, while driving or at a stop will randomly rev to 5 and 6 thousand RPM, up and down like it has a mind of its own. I go to pick up the car and I am able to get it home so sometime the issue goes away after the car is turned off and back on after a while. Is this a TCM issue? Please help. lol
Same as Renault EDC gearbox. This error occurs in Renault models in hot weather and frequent operating situations. This error occurs: 1-3-5 or 2-4-6th gear does not work. I think; It is due to the loss of thermal paste property.
I have a 2012 ford focus with 87k miles and took it to Ford because it was having the same problems you mentioned. They diagnosed it was the TCM but I was told the emissions warranty only goes to 80k, but when I had it in for the clutch plate and seals at 72k miles I also told them of those symptoms and it wasn't addressed. Now they want $1200 to fix it, do I have any options cause I feel like I'm getting screwed? Great video btw, glad I'm not the only one with this problem.
Daniel Condo I would explain all of this to Ford customer service division, if you have these issue documented at the 72k before the 80k expiration of the TCM emissions warranty they will usually either goodwill part or all of it.
The 2013 Ford Focus SE had the following error codes and procedures that required replacement of the Transmission Control Module. Check engine indicator On, Codes P087A and P287A followed flow chart in accordance with Customer Satisfaction Program 14M02 and was directed to Pinpoint Test B. test B indicated that the transmission control module was faulty. The initial problem was that the transmission would not go into reverse and the gear box had shutter.
Just happened to me yesterday on my 2013 Focus... I will never buy a Ford again. Second ford I've owned and it's been nothing but problems since I've had it. The TCM is the current problem. I was driving and it just cut out in the middle of the road. My car would not accelerate. Ford, please stop releasing these defective vehicles. Cars are NOT something the average person can afford every other year
Hey Fordtechmakuloco... your videos are awesome! I am thinking of buying a 2013 ford fusion 2.o l4 ecoboost 42k miles! I am scared of the transmition. Is this something to worry about on this car? Good buy or should I look for something else? Your opinion will be GREATLY appreciated . Thank you josh
How common is it to have the loss of acceleration issue without any DTCs? I have had to pull over to the side of the road twice now. My car has been at the dealer two times and they say they cannot replicate it and no codes. They seem unwilling to do anything now. When this happens, my caronly revs and the shift selector display acts strange. The blue indicator light will only show on park, reverse, neutral, and drive. The light will not show on the sport mode, when it normal does.
I recently bought a 2014 Ford fiesta, it was cheap and I was on the verge of getting evicted so i needed a car asap to put me my dogs in for the time being. It recently has been running weird. It hesitates a bit when I accelerate but once it picks up its fast and its as if nothing is wrong with it. But now when i stop i hear like a metal clanking, or coins in a jar until it stops. I ran it to see what codes would pop up and only got code P0420 which i know is pretty generic and can be a number of things. I went and got and oil change and right afetr the oil change it started running a little sluggish but would still pick up. Then a couple of hours later on the day i got the oil change i got a notice on the radio and an icon on the dash "Hill start assist unavailable". Before that popped up I had removed some fuses to check them. I thought there could be some relation to that being the reason why the Hill stop notice started coming up. I ran it for codes again today and I got codes P0420 and P285E. Can you please give me any input on what to check or what it may be. Anything would help!
I had my TCM replaced on my 2012 Focus about 2 weeks ago (around $1200). Is the NEW one an upgraded model or the same as the original pos? Also, it was on backorder for 3 weeks, assuming they are replacing quite a bit of these things. Any chance of recall? Thanks, good video.
Yours was out of warranty? These are covered by emissions warranty which is very long. Yes they have changed part numbers about 7 times now and the latest one you got should be ok now.
if they made you pay, that's disgusting conduct as it's clearly a warranty issue, I bought a 2012 Ford Focus (LW series) brand new. The transmission/TCM has been replaced twice (under warranty). The current transmission / TCM is only 4 years old. All seems fine (aside from the occasional 'shudder' when coming to a stop).
Hi mate thanks for your video about ford powershift transmission i got problem with mine and spend lots of money to fix but nothing fixed i will try to make small video and upload to you see the problem i want to save my car life the ford wont help about the just told we can make service like oil and filter change but i already done and nothing help
Hey there, thank you for the video. What about a Focus mk3 transmission which engages only impair gears 1-3-5 but no 2-4-6-R, the diagnostic revealed there's a problem with the clutch actuator B (Low circuit...) I tried to invert the actuators but same problem, which means that the actuator B is not the issue origin. I also did some small vibrations on the clutch position sensor's connector, it resolved the problem the gears pass smoothly but few minutes driving in high traffic the issue comes again.. 😓😓 so what do you think about this issue? Thank you in advance Man.
I was a long time looking for a ford focus 2013-14 because I think the car looks great, but after getting to know all the trouble they have with the automatic transmission I think I have to drop this car for something else, I wonder if it is even worth to consider as an option, what do you all think, I'm afraid I'm going to regret buying a focus.
Just curious since this video is older, How many of you have a Focus sitting at a dealer waiting on parts from Ford for the recall warranty on this, Mine has been there going on 6 months now as well as 40 other people at Les Stumpf Ford in Appleton WI I think the other people and I are getting lied too.
I have a 2015 focus dct, had the clutch replaced under warranty in 2019 & now 100k miles after clutch replaced ( yes I drive a lot) , it’s giving me problems. Gears slipping, and now not going in reverse.
i have a question about the tcm on my focus. i have 2012 focus se with TCM problems. right now i just pick up a oem TCM from ford and my question is, can the new TCM could be program even when the old one wont work and it wont communicate with scan tool? i know your video is 9years old but this is a problem across focus and fiestas.
Hey Makuloco or youtube, i have a 2014 ford focus se automatic transmission. i recently just had the new recall clutch installed so my car doesn't jerk or stutter anymore on take off. Now my problem seems to be in the RMP's. At times it will jump to 4thousand RMPS when I'm only doing about 10 to 15 miles per hour on a casual take off from a stop sign. my car wants to jump out of first gear so fast as well as 2nd gear that it revs up to 2500, 3000 and up to 4000 just when I'm doing a basic stop and go. Is this a TCM problem?
+Jacob Cano Is it possibly skipping gears, that's what mine is doing with the newest clutch revision. high rpms followed by really low rpms after a violent shift change. since it's in a higher gear then it should be it will have a hard time accelerating from there.
My ford focus TCM broke down. There is no availability in show room (Saudi) and show room service personnel informed that this part is not available and it will take one month to import from US. Also informed that I have to drive slowly in the city. Is that recommended to drive ? Please anybody let me know
I have a big question if u can answer it’ll help I’m asking u cause your a ford repair dealer guy , I got P0700 and P07A2 I changed the clutch actuators and it doesn’t drive or move in drive it has reverse but it won’t go forward it’s like it’s in neutral and rolling backward in my driveway
FordTechMakuloco I understand it's not safe for the people in the vehicle because it could turn off while driving in traffic, but will the transmission be damaged in any way?
nmillan1 When it goes to shift it can just shut off, or in gear it'll just shut off, don't mess around, get it replaced and make sure they don't do some half ass fix, demand a new TCM
Took mine to a Ford dealership. They said they wouldn’t change mine because I had aftermarket parts and a tuner. Even though it was on stock tune. 2014 at 134k miles
I think I had the same issue tonight as I was about to drive home from dinner... I just hit 91k miles (I drive about 100 miles a day round trip to work). Since day one of having the car (March 2011), I've always had grinding issues with the trans shifting from 1st to 2nd, and then tonight I had all of the issues with the cluster 'going wacko', and unable to shift out of park, requiring full restart of the car (four times). VIN: 3FADP4EJ6BM122146 Should it still be able to be repaired 'under warranty'? and if so, what's the bulletin number so i can bring it up with the guys at my local shop?
I have a 2013 Focus and it will shift into any gear but the car doesn't move in reverse. Drive is ok. Is it the TCM or is it the reverse actuator? Thank you for any advice you can offer.
I have had two go bad in my 2011 already. What is different from 2011 transmissions to newer ones that they will not interchange? Is it a physical difference or electronic control? Thanks, Rocky
Today I experienced a problem with the gearbox on my 2011 Fiesta. I was cruising at about 80mph when I wanted to overtake. When I accelerated, suddenly a gear change was triggered and the RPM shot up to about 6K and then down again. This is when I also noticed the check engine light come on. Everything seemed normal until I started slowing down to stop. There were erratic sounds and gear changes. I also felt some loss of power. After I came to a complete stop I tried to make sense of what was going on and found that I was not able to reverse. It just did not engage. I tried moving forward, the 1st gear engaged but when it shifted to 2nd, I had no power at all, it just went into neutral for about 2 seconds with more noises before it went to 3rd. Going into 3rd at that speed I did not have much power. Same goes for 3rd into 4th and I presume 5th into 6th. I managed to drove to the Ford service centre, they were closing so no checking was done. But with them symptoms I mentioned they said the TCM would need replacing and would cost about USD1200 (after conversion). So after leaving the car turned off and parked for about 20 minutes, I tried driving again and everything was back to normal. The check engine light was still on but I had all my gears. I decided to drive home, and after the car was parked for about an hour, even the check engine light went off. Can you please let me know what you think as I am not entirely convinced that the whole TCM needs replacing.
Well pulling codes that were set are best but I experienced the exact problems as you were at times it would work, at times would not move but others it would and the reverse problem. Also the tcm issue is very common on the 2011 fiestas so I would concur with the dealer yes unfortunately. This is covered under emissions warranty so I would run the warranty first.
FordTechMakuloco Hi, thanks for your reply. I took it in to have the codes read. This was after the check engine lamp had cleared. It had the below code present; P090C - Clutch B Actuator Control Circuit Low The technician reflashed the TCM and PCM and suggested I try to see if that would resolve it. However it did not. The problem happened again yesterday. Could this be because of a bad wire or a bad connector somewhere?
FordTechMakuloco Also, I was reading up on the emissions warranty and it talks about taking effect only if the vehicle fails EPA emission standards. Is this really the case? Also, does this also apply to vehicles in my country Malaysia?
The laws are totally different there I would not be able to check coverage. For that code it is all internal to the tcm so it looks as those yours is bad.
So after the TCM problem, the Ford Focus transmission, engagement, gearing and the other issues mentioned on the recall should be gone? Or is this a persistent issue that happens from time to time or milleage related issues?
Just had my 2014 Focus TCM replace under warranty. Shifts pretty decent now but the Overdrive won't disengage when I push the button on the shifter but the Hillstart does work. So in other words when I engaged the Hillstart/Overdrive button the Hillstart will work but the Overdrive won't. Any Ideas?
I have a 2016 focus, battery died, after getting jumped and a new battery the car will not shift or go into reverse, parking brake works, will go into drive. No problems before the battery issue.
Hi, I have a 2014 ford focus se. I have the dps6 transmission. I did not know about the tcm till Feb. 2016. I had them re-program it. Yet when I checked under my car. They actually replaced it. Never said a word to me that they fully replaced the tcm. About two months later clutches are worn as car does not go past 2nd gear if in drive and now has NO REVERSE? What could have caused this? My dealer is telling me its the fork in my transmission but I don't understand how that could be since the car was running perfectly fine before the tcm was replaced.....HELP!
+Joe Desanto They need to take a closer look at the new tcm to see if it has failed and also check that ground. Either way its under warranty. I have never seen a fork failure on these though.
+Joe Desanto Hey Joe, I have a very similar issue as you just started happening this month. I've had this car for 2 years bought it used with 36k on it and I now have 130k on it. I've had the whole shuddering/grinding issue throughout the whole life and I've had the clutch replaced 3 times. At 125k was my last clutch change and 2k miles out my transmission started to skip 3rd and 5th gear. This has never been its behavior before so it leads me to believe that it's a new system that they're trying to fix the problems but it made it worse. If you can find the photo on how our duel clutch transmission works, the inner shaft and clutch #1 handle gears Park, 1, 3, 5 and the outer shaft clutch #2 handle Reverse, 2, 4, 6. So in my case it seems my odd number clutch is stuck in first gear as 1, 2, 4, 6, R gears all work fine for me, and in your case your 2nd, 4th, 6th, and reverse gear are the issue. Anyway our clutches are covered to 150k miles so good luck with it. If you're under 60k miles I suggest lemoning the car and get out while you can.
+Mike Gann Clutches are covered to 100k, TCM till 150k. I couldn't tell you which is your issue, there are two clock gears that turn the actuators for the shift forks, those are fed by the TCM. Being that 1st DOES engage, and DOES release, I wonder if one of the shift forks is not moving, indicating TCM not turning one of the gears.
+anterpants Yeah and since its not a consistent problem that only changes when the key is pulled out I'm thinking it's a computer problem too. It's slowly going away so I'm going to wait for it to get bad again and I'll hand it to them
I think my mother's car has this issue right now. Hers intermittently won't start unless I put it in neutral. Only sometimes it will start in park. I hear a lot of clicking and popping when the car is turned off and the key is not even in it, coming from the transmission. It was shifting very weird before this happened. The rpm would rise like a slipping clutch before it would shift and taking off from a stop light it felt like it was hunting for a gear. Is this the same thing?
I'm facing a similar problem in my 2014 Ford Focus SE and just don't know what to do. In some situations, the car won't start until the gear is moved to neutral. Transmission Overheating keeps popping up after driving for like 7-10mins, the gears doesn't change well too. What could be done about it?
Got a 2013 & engine runs but wont rev most of the time & auto trans wont select gears , then a large click click click ( sometimes for 10 mins even after turning off the key ) from down under the air filter . Thinking its scrap but will have an attempt to repair it .
2012 focus 120k driving down the highway and it kicks into neutral and wont go into gear until you coast to a stop shut the car down cycle the key start car again then take off and it will repeat in about 15 miles,?? any ideas
Hi there, I got a P07A3 Code 2017 Ford Focus it does the loud clicking and what not when I try to turn it on I can only turn it on when the noises stop, is this related to the TCM?
what about the 2015 focus?? My daughter just rented on and thought the trans was going out!!! Rental agency said oh thats normal!!! No its not, what the hell?????Cant believe its still going on!!!!
I got a 2015 Ford Fiesta l bought it from a friend, It feels like the 1st and 2nd gear struggle to grab it slips and doesn't shift smoothly. Any ideas? has 35k miles
I want to know how to fix it..mechanically it looks fine. Computer board S1JWA..fomoco? It was going to be trashed by our mechanic. I tore it down..and suspect as above.
Ford Tech Makuloco. A friend of mine has a 2012 focus with the TCM being bad. Dealer said it is not covered under warranty, because it appears to have been under water. where is the TCM located. if that is in the engine compartment, that would tell me that the car was in a flood and then the dealer sold him a known flooded car. Any help is appreciated.
FordTechMakuloco I just checked the video again, and it shows the TCM, but does not show where on the trans it is at. Can you provide a how to remove and install, or is it just a simple unbolt and remove and bolt in and go?
Got a whole host of issues with my 2011 Fiesta. Slipping in 3&5, Rough shifts, missed gears, occasionally shuts out 1, 3 & 5. Comes out of lockup half the time when gas is released. No consistent DTC codes being thrown, but the Transmission Malfuntion "Service transmission now" comes on, only to go away once the car is shut off. Last time it threw a code was for friction surface issue. Have tried TCM flash at dealer, the ground wire TSB, had the seepage of fluid from bell housing, so flushed clutch plates and bell housing with acetone per another TSB (What a nightmare doing that in the driveway was). Have also used the clutch scrubbing technique with no success. Can't find a replacement clutch for less than $2,500 as it's Ford availability only. Any other ideas I should try?
What does it take for Ford to fix them? Do I have to wait until my car is dead? Taking to Ford but concern is if it doesn't throw codes again (local mechanic ran diagnostic and said was clearly TCM), they'll refuse to replace, even though they know these are an issue. It's like Russian Roulette with this stuff and I don't want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere!
Thanks a lot I just brought me 2012 focus SE and got it service today and he told me about the TMC. Thank God it’s not over 1000.000 cause i Got nervous like hell. Thank you for the video man
Old comment but curious as to if you still have the car or not and what problems you may have had with the car along the way
@@RKCorinth I still have the same car. Had a recalled computer that deals with the transmission...still sitting in the yard need a good clean up. 😆
Thank you for taking the time and posting these videos. Which I had known about your youtube channel before I bought my Focus.
thats why i own old ford trucks less to go wrong. cars now a days is getting to complex and nothing is done by physical connection like a cable or rod.good video
mack1ford unfortunately government like in uk pass laws so you get rid of old cars or tax them high do you are forced to buy new or newer thus keeping car companies in big business ....Too big to fail rather then focusing on being green same with everything these days even phones lol
Do a teardown video of the Ford dual clutch tcm
yes i would like to see that as well and the cost for parts are substantially lower than dealer costs
Garrett McKie Code P07A3??
When Ford introduced the gearbox, they said it was maintenance free for 100,000 miles.
NOW they say you have to change the transmission oil and filter every 30,000 miles, using specialist equipment at a cost of 150 UK pounds.
clearly this gearbox was never tested in the real world, but on some bench somewhere.
we have been lucky with our Gearbox so far, the only issue we had was a transmission failure on the dashboard one freezing cold morning. after switching off and back on again it was OK.
a new battery fixed that problem in the end.
They tested it in the real world... on OUR cars. Not sure who is worse, Ford manufacturing or the Ford dealers.
How do you go about doing the learning process?
just did one on a 2014 fiesta. had the control module performance code, and u0101 lost com with tcm. it caused a no start issue though. no shifting issue, when i turned the key on to read codes the trans clutches would be shuttering for a minute or so.
In the 2012 they extended the warranty on the TCM to 10/150 as I am having it replaced this week and it’s covered thankfully.
Wow they actually had parts for the repair?
Just got mine back. Wont do the warranty repair until I replace the clutch at my cost of $1800
@@christianc1313 both cutches actually. There are 2 which makes it that much more annoying and expensive. Very smart to wait seeing they will have to break the trans down completely anyway. It’s not a tough repair and the tools along with the computer/software to synchronize it and align the actuators is the stick point where you need a shop to complete the work.
2013 focus clutch actuator has failed twice for me (less than 40k) P0902. the subject
of class action, Ford essentially has admitted the car blows chunks. Although I have a 7 year warrantly
with a deductible, they fix for free for me anyway. I can no longer trust this car to drive anywhere
I have got the shuddering problem with our 2014 Ford Focus, but after experiencing the B.S from the Ford dealership in Victoria B.C "we will never be going back to them, they suck.
You'll find it is the corporate mindset as much as the local dealer.
@@MrBigsteve518 lol
@@susanc6685 no loaners. Luckily I can drive my wife's car while it's in the shop.
i have the same thing with my 2014 fiesta, i’m not good with cars but i’m learning a little more but haven’t seen this video all the way, i hope it works
forgot to mention, when i come to a stop or even driving it loses power where im trying to engage but im just revving the engine instead
I got a " Control Module Wake-up Signal" P06E4, 😢 i thinks is related to an electrical misfunction
@@BruceLigno did you find out anything with your issue? My car just did this and I'm looking for advice on what I need to do
@@dwjackson903 It turned out to be the transmission partly breaking itself, so I had to buy the casing for it. Fixed all of the issues.
@@BruceLigno I would appreciate it if you would
my replacement died within two weeks now on manual control
I'm confused on the Auto Manual please explain how it is able to do so and can a car be converted is it the same transmission just different control computer
Wow, over 30 years in the auto repair industry. I have never seen a module with splines to actuate transmission shifting. Which Ford engineer designed that and sold it as a good idea? First time I seen a PCM bolted to cooling plate with fuel running through it on a diesel engine I thought that was a stretch, but it works. I bet the Ford techs at dealer see those Fiestas coming and say " it needs a ground repair, tcm flash or replace and replace transmission".
the idea itself isnt baf
I’m in Australia and I purchased one in 2011. My granddaughter has had it for 3 years and the car just stopped in the middle lane of the freeway. There was no forward forward movement but it still works in reverse. Dealer states the module is faulty and cost of replacement is $A 1500.
Have you heard of any instances of a faulty TCM causing the transmission to stay stuck in 1st gear? It's a 2012 focus if that makes a difference or even damaging anything internal to the transmission?
Did you ever get an answer to this? This is exactly what's happening to mine.
Same for me as well on my fiesta
hi brian can i ask you a question about my clutch on my 2015 ford fiesta? its a long one!
Codes
-2837 shift fork b position circuit range performance
-287b shift fork cal not learned.
-074a unable to engage 2nd gear
The internals of the trans seem rather "simple" and I do not understand the claimed damage would happen.
Thanks for any help,
Mike
My warranty expired 2 months ago and it just started acting up! And they are months behind on back orders
Cool Vid, That's why I only drive a stick shift
Shut up
My sis refuses to buy automatic ever since she shared Acura V6, which was notorious for tranny problems, with her boyfriend in late 90s (have nothing against Honda, most of our cars are actually Hondas, which I like to work on, but manual gear box).
+ford #ford #tcm #warranty
technical yes because it is not serviced separate.
HI Brian Good Day,
Can you help me with my 2011 ford fiesta 1.6L A/T.
@@smithguy9109 have you already replaced your tcm?
No
@maksim bond yes, at first I was able to start the car from the fuse box. In the end, it turns out it was a faulty TCM which prevented the car from starting.
@maksim bond yes, after TCM replaced, car started again.
I need help I have a 2014 focus titanium I had a check engine light code p0902 I already change the clutch actuators but now after driving it said warning transmission getting hot an the same code came back p0902 for clutch actuators do I need to change the tcm too
I have the same problem p0902 and p285e clutch fork shift.
How you fix that and how much cost you.
My focus 2014 have 95k miles.
Wow Fiesta indeed!!!! Amazing that they can't even build a reliable entry level car.
They never could. Ford makes typical American garbage.

Great video!!!
TCM was replaced on my 2014 focus at 1300 miles. Rough shifts and on a warm day in summer, car would not go into reverse. Seems to be fine now, just some clutch chatter on cold days.
i have the same problem with my 2012, but it wasn't identified until the extended warranty expired.
It's also an issue on the focus.id add to the concerns engine over rev and over rev dtc,and no crank no start after shut off because PCM is not seeing park/neutral input from Tcm.
Yep Focus too but more common on early Fiesta.
It's on its way to failure
Please help. lol
+The Stackz Co. No check engine lights by the way.
Did you manage to solve this problem?
And what was the cause?
Same as Renault EDC gearbox. This error occurs in Renault models in hot weather and frequent operating situations. This error occurs: 1-3-5 or 2-4-6th gear does not work. I think; It is due to the loss of thermal paste property.
How do u fix it? Do u hv WhatsApp?
I have a 2012 ford focus with 87k miles and took it to Ford because it was having the same problems you mentioned. They diagnosed it was
the TCM but I was told the emissions warranty only goes to 80k, but when I had it in for the clutch plate and seals at 72k miles I also told them of those symptoms and it wasn't addressed. Now they want $1200 to fix it, do I have any options cause I feel like I'm getting screwed? Great video btw, glad I'm not the only one with this problem.
Also do you see any possibility of a recall? And I saw your on vacation, so no rush and I appreciate that you take the time to help your followers
No reverse classic symptom
Just happened to me yesterday on my 2013 Focus... I will never buy a Ford again. Second ford I've owned and it's been nothing but problems since I've had it. The TCM is the current problem. I was driving and it just cut out in the middle of the road. My car would not accelerate. Ford, please stop releasing these defective vehicles. Cars are NOT something the average person can afford every other year
As I solved the problem P087B, P287A and P287A. THANK YOU
+cristian rivera i changed the transmission mode (TCM) but the question is I NEED TO PROGRAMMED THE TCM??.. Because the doesn't start
Do NOT buy! These cars are garbage!

Thank you in advance Man.

i have a question about the tcm on my focus. i have 2012 focus se with TCM problems. right now i just pick up a oem TCM from ford and my question is, can the new TCM could be program even when the old one wont work and it wont communicate with scan tool? i know your video is 9years old but this is a problem across focus and fiestas.
+Jacob Cano -also to add to my last post… my focus has 15,750 miles on it.
+Jacob Cano -sorry meant to say RPM's
+Jacob Cano Is it possibly skipping gears, that's what mine is doing with the newest clutch revision. high rpms followed by really low rpms after a violent shift change. since it's in a higher gear then it should be it will have a hard time accelerating from there.
My ford focus TCM broke down. There is no availability in show room (Saudi) and show room service personnel informed that this part is not available and it will take one month to import from US. Also informed that I have to drive slowly in the city. Is that recommended to drive ? Please anybody let me know
Mahesh Naik u gotta drive very slow
I have a big question if u can answer it’ll help I’m asking u cause your a ford repair dealer guy , I got P0700 and P07A2 I changed the clutch actuators and it doesn’t drive or move in drive it has reverse but it won’t go forward it’s like it’s in neutral and rolling backward in my driveway
is my 2012 ford focus SE safe to drive with a messed up TCM? can it cause any permanent damage to the transmission?
nmillan1 No it is not safe
FordTechMakuloco I understand it's not safe for the people in the vehicle because it could turn off while driving in traffic, but will the transmission be damaged in any way?
nmillan1 When it goes to shift it can just shut off, or in gear it'll just shut off, don't mess around, get it replaced and make sure they don't do some half ass fix, demand a new TCM
+nmillan1 my opinion is that it is safer for the passengers then for the transmission.
Just bought a 14 focus it only has 50k tcm went out today lucky still covered under warranty
@FordTechMakuloco can i know how many bolts that TCM have?

I think I had the same issue tonight as I was about to drive home from dinner... I just hit 91k miles (I drive about 100 miles a day round trip to work). Since day one of having the car (March 2011), I've always had grinding issues with the trans shifting from 1st to 2nd, and then tonight I had all of the issues with the cluster 'going wacko', and unable to shift out of park, requiring full restart of the car (four times).

FordTechMakuloco
Hi, thanks for your reply. I took it in to have the codes read. This was after the check engine lamp had cleared. It had the below code present;
P090C - Clutch B Actuator Control Circuit Low
The technician reflashed the TCM and PCM and suggested I try to see if that would resolve it. However it did not. The problem happened again yesterday. Could this be because of a bad wire or a bad connector somewhere?
FordTechMakuloco
Also, I was reading up on the emissions warranty and it talks about taking effect only if the vehicle fails EPA emission standards. Is this really the case? Also, does this also apply to vehicles in my country Malaysia?
The laws are totally different there I would not be able to check coverage. For that code it is all internal to the tcm so it looks as those yours is bad.
FordTechMakuloco
It's internal huh, I was afraid of that. Alright thanks. You've been great help.
So after the TCM problem, the Ford Focus transmission, engagement, gearing and the other issues mentioned on the recall should be gone? Or is this a persistent issue that happens from time to time or milleage related issues?

Sounded strange to me as well. If the new one has failed could that cause no reverse with the transmission?
@@benjimanofori did you ever find out what the problem was? Mine is doing the same thing!

Bolts to the drivers side of the trans as shown in the video it sits pretty low.
FordTechMakuloco I just checked the video again, and it shows the TCM, but does not show where on the trans it is at. Can you provide a how to remove and install, or is it just a simple unbolt and remove and bolt in and go?
Yep it just unbolts from the side of the trans but needs to be programmed to the vehicle.
Ahh. So it is a dealer only item. How convenient. Lol
Can you share what is the TCM part number for Ford Fiesta Auto 2012?
What does it take for Ford to fix them? Do I have to wait until my car is dead? Taking to Ford but concern is if it doesn't throw codes again (local mechanic ran diagnostic and said was clearly TCM), they'll refuse to replace, even though they know these are an issue. It's like Russian Roulette with this stuff and I don't want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere!
This is where I am right now:(
