Thanks man. I've been having so many issues with my transmission and don't want to replace it. You're right though, they are very durable and the learning feature is awesome. Thanks again
Dealership tech here, I’m sitting on at least 15 Focus and Fiestas that need TCMs :( these suckers are on back order and have been since the longest. Surprisingly enough though this issue isn’t as common. I’ve done a handful of case replacements for this concern. But not as often as the shudder on acceleration. Nonetheless I love these little cars. 7 years of consistent workflow because of these. Thank you Ford.
I love them too! I'd own one. You can't beat the fuel economy. If ever the opportunity arises, for the right price, I'm gonna have to jump at it. So easy to work on.....when parts are available.
Hey buddy thanks for the amazing explanation. I've a 2012 focus that is throwing in p2831, p2832 and p287b at the same time. Got it diagnosed by the dealer they tried pinpoint test and tcm adaptive learning three times and it failed. Checked for tsb/ssb found none. Car is in limp mode, and i can definitely hear some clanks/grinds within the tranny when shifting in limp mode. Also, previously during winter i had a p090c actuator circuit B low code coming in, which after changing actuators remained but went away as soon as summer kicked in. I'm tight on budget, and hence would you recommend changing the tcm first like the dealers recommended (not to mention there's a huge part backorder), or just remove the tranny for inspection. The new codes suggest it's the case half, but the previous issue during the cold hints towards a bad tcm too or maybe a battery issue?. Do you think i should have the tcm taken off and check the clock gears? I don't know where to begin. Would really appreciate your feedback.
Im having the same 2 codes on mu 2015 focus i removed the tcm amd counted the turn and i get exactly 6.5 and 4.5 like you mentioned, any ideas what else can be causing these codes?
At this point if it passed the test outline in the video I'd have to direct you to "the manual". I'd highly recommend performing the appropriate pin point test per these codes as outlined in a manual to insure you head down the right road and replace the right part. Unfortunately I'm not able to provide you with that information. Don't want you going down the wrong road.
I put 2 new shift forks in my 2015 Ford Focus the clutch I set with the tools I bought put it on my computer to do a relearn it said clutch travel test failed does this mean I need the clutch also ? Thanks for any reply
I had 3 transmission redone by a ford dealership. Of course they were on on warranty. After the third transmission being done I sold it and then got a focus 5 speed manual transmission car. That's how I fixed that problem. I think in australia ford had to buy back all of these DCT ford cars.
I have a 2018 ford fiesta and when I slow to turn onto my daughter's road, it is a slight hill and the transmission acts like it has a delay in shifting
Is that 6.5 and 4.5 full turns of the gears. I have a 013 fiesta that the shift drum won’t relearn in the adaptive relearn procedure. I also have p2832 A and p287b A not learned. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance .
@Barbour’s Auto Help. I have 2018 ford focus with these same codes and only 93k miles. Am I just better off replacing the whole transmission and do clutch on it? Or is there some troubleshooting I can follow before throwing money at it.
Freedom racing shows a table for less than 1.5k. Not sure where the bearing preload kit can be obtained from other than Rotunda. You have to have an account to get the tool through them.
I like your video because you show work on the gearbox area. Most videos show the clutch area. I changed the clutch in my 2011 Fiesta but the new axle seal failed and my family member did not mention the noise. I have a good clutch and would like to keep it and replace the gear part only. Is it possible to use a Focus transmission since I can find very many Focus cores for $150 to $250 range. I'm guessing several of these are clutch related failures. I have searched online and have not found anything definitive about interchanging Focus and Fiesta transmissions.
@@BarboursAutoHelp Thanks for getting back. It's not the clutch side, so I guess it's called the case half. Is the entire transmission physically the same? If not, then is the gear set in the case half interchangeable? By interchangeable I mean physically the same between a Focus and Fiesta (not counting minor revision differences)?
P2837, P287B, and PO882 are my codes. Car has 14,000 miles on it and this happened already. I wouldn’t think a major mechanical failure. This happened after the battery went bad and I replaced it. Couldn’t that locating tab be welded and ground to shape.
Had a customer tow in a 2017 focus, saying that he had a dead battery and changed the battery himself. After said battery change the car was in limp mode. He then disconnected the battery and reconnected it and had a no crank no start. Once the car was here I found a loose connection at BJB and this fix the no crank, no start. However the transmission will move the car forward but not in reverse. It has a P0287B, and a P2837 code and is unable to recalibrate shift forks. My question is if I remove the TCM and turn those gear after marking them, will that tell me if that tab is broken off inside the case?
I have this problem right now with my son's car. It has the P2837 code and also fails the shift drum adaptive learning procedure. If I check what you just showed and the tabs are fine, then what? I just can't get to pass. I have a brand new TCM and brand new shift drum actuators installed and it still doesn't pass.
Then there may be a problem with the shift forks or something inside the transmission or possibly the TCM. Not likely to be a TCM problem though. I have strong doubts that its something other than a broke case. It only takes a half hour to check it the way shown in the video. Check to see how many times the clock gear rotates and then let me know what you find before you go further. (You are going down a dark alley so, not sure what mechanical experience you have, but if you aren't confident in taking things apart and reassembling then I'd advise having a tech do it for you. ) Either way, I'm here. Can't make you any guarantees though.
The same way shown in the video, just with the trany in. This is how I do it at work. Of course, I have the vehicle lifted overhead. It makes it much easier.
I have codes P2872, P70A3 would this be the problem? Car will drive but transmission over heat on display and slipping. I was going to change the clutch. Removing transmission tomorrow. Sure wouldn’t hurt to do the upper gear test though.
Can't seem to move the clock gears mentioned, either way more than one turn. Does the transmission have to be in neutral? I have the trans out and last was set in park. Thx
Yes, a table is needed. Alldata, Shop key, and on demand are pretty good. I believe with some of them you can just get your vehicles information and it's a lot cheaper.
I think I’ve just successfully ruined my trans moving the forks in my 2012 Ford Focus I was winding in and out the forks to try free up stuck open position sensor a .. the screw that’s on the fork came out and the fork no longer springs back after rotating anticlockwise .. it changes in all gears but won’t go in top gear now .. other than that it’s working ok but I’m sure it will over hear if it doesn’t go in all gears properly???
Great video! I replaced the case half on my Focus and I unfortunately did not do anything regarding differential shims. What’s the biggest issue I’ve created? 😂
Improper preload on the bearings can lead to bearing failure and potentially catastrophic transmission failure.....Even more catastrophic than just replacing the case half. I'd take it back out and fix it if you just did it. I've seen it happen.
What do you mean re-shim the differential?? You lost me there.. I looked on google and Reddit I couldn't find any answers.. Edit: I finally found it!! Another question.. If I'm replacing the case half can I reuse the old shims and races in the new case half?? Or use new ones the same size?
If the shim is the correct size then you can use it. Of course you have to make sure it is the correct size. You can't just throw the shim in there and hope for the best. You have to measure using special tools. I show the special tool staring at 5:28 onward. Usually the shim will have to be replaced with a different size. I'm sorry but I do not have a video showing how to do this.
@@BarboursAutoHelpdang okay that sounds a little complicated.. I wish I could find a video showing how to do it.. The case half is like $500 I'm thinking about just buying a used trans for 1000 at junk yard and throwing that in there.. Im worried that the used trans might have stored the old cars vin and it won't work in my vehicle unless its reprogrammed or flashed.. I really just wanna replace the case half with a new one and put everything back together but now I have to reshim and pop a race in there so it's just way to complicated Thank you so much !
Actually this is a rare occurrence. As stated in the video this is just the most common failure inside the gear box when there is a failure inside the gear box. It is very rare for the gear boxes on the DPS6 to fail. In order for something to be a recall it has to happen on a bunch of vehicles. I wouldn't say Ford sucks. I don't believe any of the big three has them beat. Shoot, I'd drive a Focus. You can't beat the gas mileage. Also, the 2.0 is bullet proof. Yes, they have issue with the clutch and TCM. But, for me it's a minor inconvenience. (of course I can fix them too so that plays into it.)
I'd say no. Especially considering the amount of force that it has to withstand. The existing metal tab broke off. I don't think a puddy job will be stronger.
Thanks man. I've been having so many issues with my transmission and don't want to replace it. You're right though, they are very durable and the learning feature is awesome. Thanks again

Is there a video somewhere explaining the process of reshimming differential? Would lt be the same procedure as other transmissions?
If only someone made an aftermarket control module with a stepper motor that counts turns and doesn't rely on repeated hard stop calibration

My bottom gear continues to spin in the clockwise position, but stops in the counter clockwise position, is this normal?
It should stop, after so many turns, in both directions.
I have a question . Could a person that welds aluminum repair the shift drum stop instead of replacing the case

I have a Ford Fiesta automatic transmission when I put it in reverse it makes the vehicle vibrate
what's the cause for breaking the stopper?
I've heard it's the battery voltage or swapping batteries. It causes the transmission to slam into itself
