Today we’re making Coquito! This is a popular Puerto Rican Christmas drink, but it’s actually enjoyed from mid November to Dia de Reyes (Jan 6). Most versions of Coquito are family recipes, but since my family doesn’t make Coquito, I thought I’d create a recipe of my own. It’s rich and sweet with subtle spices - what’s not to like? If you want to try this dairy-free, sub out the evaporated and sweetened condensed milks for nondairy alternatives (coconut or oat). Hope you enjoy the Coquito, and happy holidays!

You are spot on with the familial variations and secrecy and, to be honest, rivalry! My grandma (Tata) added egg yolk as many others did. It is common to make Coquito weeks in advance to let it “cure.” I suspect the raw egg was the reason for this. Last comment: thanks for using Don Q rather than the ubiquitous Bacardi or some exotic shi-shi rum. Well done señor!

First ingredient is love. Everything else is flexible. A non-dairy version is super easy with high fat coconut milk and sugar almost like making creme of coconut. btw... this stuff is bomb in hot cocoa, coffee, or warm by itself

I approve! Some minor tweaks I’ve made over the years is to sub out the evaporated milk for half and half, and play with the ratios of Coco Lopez and condensed milk. The close friends and family bottles get real vanilla bean too. It’s great with a high proof bourbon as well (or Don Q Reserva 7).

Great Recipe, It's very true that in Puerto Rico every family has their own recipe also there are MANY variations that add different flavors to what it's considered the "base" recipe such as almond, pistacho and the ever-popular Nutella among others. The predominant choice of alcohol is white rum or pitoro (moonshine) if you can find it. Technique wise we usually pour the creamier ingredients first then rinse with the other ingredients also not everyone makes "The tea".

Puerto Rican here, nice job nailing the basics. Super happy to see you showing some love for our holiday drink.
Our family recipe, passed down about 4-5 generations, uses eggs - a metric ton of them. I think the classic rendition, as I understand it also used them - hence the moniker Puerto Rican eggnog. But, as you mentioned, everyone does it a bit differently and there’s nothing wrong with that. 🙂
A tip if you’d like to try an egg based recipe. For my family’s recipe, we blend equal amounts of egg with 151 rum. We let that mixture “marinate” in the fridge for a couple of days to kill off any potential pathogens, then use it to make our coquito.
    Cheers!

Wow, that looks tasty! Mom voice: for those who don't know, though it's reasonably safe(ish) with Pyrex like he used here, please do not pour boiling liquid into glass then put directly in the freezer; the possibility of shattered glass would not be a fun holiday treat.

My grandfather (my first Christmas without him) when he didn’t use the powdered spices would scald some milk and add the whole spices and let it simmer super gently and use the milk in coquito and to make arroz con dulce
Then he would add extra powdered spices before blending/garnish
But the spiced milk added extra depth to the beverage!
So the tea with water is not too far from what some people do on the island!

Man I love yall! So happy you featured this! I grew up with my mom's coquito. My very first alcoholic beverage actually.
I knew when I started bartending that I'd have to make my own recipe.
I steep my spiced rum with raisins and cinnamon, otherwise it's a very simple traditional recipe.
My big secret is the spiced rum. You didn't get to try it in your spiced rum video but if you ever see lemon hart blackpool spiced rum, I highly recommend it.
Thank you for the video! Hope you 2 enjoy your holidays!!

Wow!!! I remember commenting about this a while back and you did it! There's a joke en PR that there's 3 million Puerto Ricans... so there's 3 million recipes, and they're all the best.😂
This is mine and it's the best:
    - 1 can condensed milk
    - 2 evaporated milk cans (small cans)
    - 2 cans coco lopez coconut cream
    - 1 cup white rum
    - 1 cup dark rum
    - vanilla to tastee
    - generous amount of cinnamon

  • @teqdigest

I love your take on coquito, i really liked the tea you made to infuse the spice flavors into the coquito a lot quicker than what my family normally uses which is a mix of ground cinnamon when blending and a couple of sticks when bottling for storage. A lot of people will add a bunch of different liquors and really booze it up but I think you shouldn't have too much of an alcoholic bite when you're drinking something like this as it's pretty heavy in consistency. I like the Don Q gold but I also like using Don Q Cristal (white/clear rum) but if you can get your hands on some good pitorro then that's the way to go too. If you ever want to make it fancy or add more mouth feel/texture, you can do as my mother did back in the day and grate some fresh coconut after blending, it's like an alcoholic dessert.

Just made a vegan Coquito bottle for NYE, my god! Tastes amazing... Added 1oz (to 500ml of Coquito) of bitter cacao liqueur, just to balance the sweetness a little bit.

This takes me back to my childhood where we used to spend hours breaking open coconuts, separating the coconut milk from the coconut, breaking it into pieces and then skinning our knuckles on The grater trying to grate all the coconut. Then there's the fresh brand new pack of white t-shirts and then everything else you mentioned in the video. It would definitely be a whole Saturday event, but we would make enough to last for a few months to a year. I miss those days! Your recipe looks really good and it's very similar to the one my sister has adopted for herself! Though she switched it up this year and made it completely dairy free and it tasted damn good!

Every year we make several bottles and give it away as presents mostly to our neighbors, we also always are gifted with some. It is also common for school classes to make them and sell them as fund-raising events. Since everyone makes them, apart from recipe's variations, there are more and more flavors emerging. Although I love the traditional coquito, I must admit that pistachio flavor coquito is amazing, you should try it. Just like eggnog, it doesn't matter how good it tastes, it feels wrong to drink it any time other than x-mass time.

Some people do add egg yolks to make it even more creamy and rich. I use the same base of liquids except for the cream of the coconut. The sweetened condensed milk is already very sweet, as is coco lopez, so it can be too much residual sugar, but i can see how a homemade cream of coconut is much less sweet. NIce job. Merry Christmas

Other parts of the Caribbean (eg Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela) have a similar drink that's milk based, called ponche de crema. It's comparable to egg nog (*never* call ponche de crema "egg nog") but much richer, relying heavily on sweetened condensed milk, and a few weeks of aging.

I never use cream of coconut for anything and rarely use coconut milk. For more body and most flavour I use organic coconut cream. Love me some coquitos. Cheers 🥂 🍹! I wish the three of you a very Merry Christmas and New Year.

You should do a video on Haitian Kremas. It predates coquito by at least 100 yrs and is the basis of most of these rhum and coconut holiday drinks
