You're supposed to use a tiny washer on the needle itself. You could possibly block the air passage for the slide You just drilled out with that huge washer.
UPDATE: The bike ran great all winter but was a tad too rich and was getting like 52 MPG. As the weather warmed up it got too rich and MPG was dipping UNDER 50 MPG! I pulled the air box snorkel and WHAM! Power band fattened up and MPG back up to 60 MPG WITH more power! I lost a little bit of the mid range grunt but it spread out across the RPM range so I don't really miss it.
