In a kind of friction with the vacuum. That's the the most intelligent statement in this film. To any who try to wrap their heads around the Higgs field theory. That statement is pure gold.

AWESOME, I did know some things about CERN but not all of what it has done. Great vid. It is impressive that since the 50's they are making all these experiments!

It goes without saying that the further into the "future" now becomes, the further and more detailed our understanding of the world/universe/ourselves evolves. The reason for this greater understanding is due to these kinds of experiments and "guesses".

All nuclear reactions are a function of relativity where e=mc^2.
    e is energy
    m is mass
c is the speed of light
Stars fuse atomic mass to release greater nuclear energy.
The CERN will fuse nuclear energy to release greater atomic mass.
That's the simple explanation anyways, but beleive me when I tell you that the explanation gets complicated when you start talking about the effects moving at the speed of light has on objects with mass.

Seeing that particle accelerator shit scares the fuck out of me.. couldn't something accidently go wrong? I mean its alright to test little things but the BIG BANG? and to even test the theory under similar circumstances scares the shit outa me.

Wow, remarkable! Although this does ring similar to the story of Babel. I support the advancements of science, and when it comes to science... nobody understands it as well as CERN. However, when playing with the very fundamental elements that hold this universe together, one must ask... "If our world is we were the world who can we blame then?"

Intelligence and knowledge will back fire on mankind, as long as WISDOM is left out, that's all I'm saying. Secretive, elite family owned bankers having access to such advanced technology is worrisome. Do you deny this? Have you looked at history? I just want to remind the research community that ETHICS cannot be left out!

I agree with you on the latter part (not to say I disagree with you on the former). It is strange, but whatever frame of reference you take, the speed of light will always be 300, 000, 000 m/s. I think it is because the faster an object goes, the slower time passes for it, so light still appears to pass at the same speed for it.

Guys, I was just reading through Hyperphysics capriciously, and I found this and realised that this is the answer to the debate you have going on. Ytmoog was right.
'The speed of light is the speed limit of the universe, so it follows that no observer will see any other observer approaching or receding at a speed greater than c. But what if observers A and B are both moving toward each other with speeds approaching c as seen by an external observer?'
I would like to post more but can't.

    in a smaller sense, time
    in a larger sense, matter
We know that the energy will create "mass moments" but we don't know how much matter mass those moments will energize.
What am I am getting at is relative to velocity where c is the "cosmic speed limit" theorized by Einstein. Einy sez "Nothing can move faster than light." and "God doesn't throw dice." however, two protons moving in opposing directions at or near the speed of light relative to an imaginary fixed point in space are moving @ 2c

I have to have dinner so I don't have the time to verify my facts, but if I remember it right, a magnetic field applied to quantum doughnuts stop excitons (couplings between an electron and an electron deficient "hole") from collapsing. Excitons are unstable so eventually the electron will fall back into the "hole" and emit the surplus energy as a photon. The magnetic field stops that happening like I said, and basically this can be made to help develop computers that communicate with light.

they do not know precisely what will happen but, the particles unleashed by the collision of the protons are the main interest. The particles will give some light to many questions, and possibly unify general relativity rules and the quantum laws. That being said, i do feel some hesitation when thinking of the levels of energy that will be reached during the experiment.

the mass doesn't change, the distance between matter and particles and etc do- so if we were to compress our sun to a black hole it would not suck in the planets as the gravity at their distances would still be the same. however once you get to space that was previously occupied by the sun is where the gravity starts going off the scales.

I should have known better than getting into an argument about "the end of the world as we know it", but I guess I learned my lesson.
The people who are qualified to at least predict the possible outcomes of this project are the ones that were consulted, and the potential risks were obviously well within an acceptable range.
You know nothing of what they are doing, you are not qualified to pass judgement on this.
    Good day.

this is "relativity" & the name says it all. Let me see if I can illustrate. as i stated, they are moving toward a common, shared, fixed point in space. Relative to the fixed point speed = c HOWEVER free will referencing allows for the speed limit to be disobeyed by CHANGING the static reference point to measure speed from to the variable fixed point of photon position rendering a relative speed of 2c relative to each other instead of the mass moment of their impact.

    The mad CERNs project
    My opinion
The LHC process goes in vacuum near the absolute zero: T=0K
In the Nature the element helium II (and He I) exist in
Vacuum near the absolute zero: T= 0K. So, maybe better
to understand how from vacuum ,where the massless
elementary particles must exist, can the real element
    helium II appears

pinkrobot makes interesting points and yes, CERN is sexy. however there certainly exists science that maintains and improves quality of life
previously, thinkers made ingenious deductions about the nature of matter and data from colliders verified this. The knowledge was directly applicable to making things (medicines, computer chips), so we recognised the usefulness of colliders and NMR chambers
Many doubt the usefulness of LHC data and agree that it's poor value for money.
    And they're right
