Just saying, Kamikoto is the same company as Established Titles.
@@georgedomse I mentioned this in another comment. I changed the rest of my integrations to Kamikoto from Established Titles as there is a tangible product and I actually think they're good. Used them for thanksgiving prep and pretty much every day afterwards. I'm under contract with this company for a little while longer. After these integrations are done I won't be continuing with this company.
@@cheapaudioman Good on you for following through on your commitment yet having the integrity not to kill the comments criticizing your sponsor.
@@cheapaudioman great. Keep it up with the great videos!
As a company, Koss is simply ridiculously good, and here's why. Way back in the day, like 1974, I bought a pair of Koss Pro 4A headphones as my first "quality" headphone. I was stationed south of SD and lived in a barracks suite with three other guys, so speakers were out of the question. For me, the Pro 4A performed fine and it wasn't until at least 10 years later that I had to replace them after my roommate's daughter decided that the headphone cable made a nice jump rope. Well the Pro 4As went on the shelf. Fast forward almost 50 years and I found them covered in dust and looking pretty straggly but I thought I might try to clean them up an repair them to maybe "vintage" status. While I was doing some product research someone mentioned that the headphones had a lifetime warranty...basically any condition, no questions. So, I thought it was well worth paying maybe $7 in shipping to check it out. By golly, a couple of weeks later a brand shiny spanking new pair of Koss Pro 4AA headphones showed up!! Now, I'm not here to praise them as awesome headphones, because they're not. But, anytime any company honors a warranty for 50 years, I think it's worth mentioning. So, I've just put a pair of these KPH40s in my Amazon cart 1)to support the channel and 2)to support Koss!!! I think they're a great company and this is no sea story!! OH!! One other thing...I couldn't help wondering during the knife commercial how these Japanese blades stack up to Hattori Hanzō steel???? ~Frank

I bought my first pair of Koss Porta Pros back around 1994. Always been so pleased with their sound. Glad to see Koss is still cranking out great headphones at such a great price. I also appreciate that, in a world of ubiquitous earbuds, Koss is still making great, cheap old-school over-ears.
Agreed ..Still have my Koss Porta Pro's from the early 90's. Recently bought new pair of Porta Pro, which is my 'daily driver'.
@@YoungOldDude Why on earth would you buy a new pair of PortaPro's? Unless you just want another set, it's worth remembering that they come with a lifetime warranty which Koss honors. For the cost of shipping them back, you get a new set. They've replaced mine twice.
I have purchased 12 of these over the last 10 years
Btw, Koss has a Porta Pro with a flexible microphone arm. It's the best online meeting headset around. Light as a feather, excellent sound quality, great mic, closes down really small. I just got one and love it.
6 for my recording studio and the others for gifts.
They make great gifts in Colombia.
Glad you reviewed these and gave a good perspective on them. I see these and the perception is similar to airline disposable headsets, but your views give me more respect for them beyond their looks. Thank you for your time and sharing this.
I've been looking for this style for a long time, people tell me I'm crazy but I love the lightness and open air form of those...thanks!
I got these about a year ago. They sound fantastic. I put on the Yaxi pads for extra cushioning. They're pretty efficient, I get good volume from just my phone.
Welcome back to the cheap side! Have these on a Porta Pro headband. Fantastic!
Listening on my porta pros! Remarkable sound for something so light and comfortable.
I just bought these based on your rec. I like this old school design and the budget to quality ratio on offer. I used your Amazon link so hopefully it gives you a kickback once it ships.
Good to see all the luv here for Koss, a quality American brand. If you need a headphone with way above average sensitivity, try the JVC HAS160 ($13). They solved this problem with my early Fire tablet and very quiet MP3 recordings.
Randy, thank you for the video! I already have an assortment of excellent, cheap(ish) headphones lying around that I've enjoyed thanks to your videos. Add this one to to the list! Really enjoying it right now through my DacMagic XS.
I really enjoy your videos even though my system and budget have moved past what you normally cover. Nice Jared shirt. 😉
I have PP, KPH30, really enjoy the warm and musical sound
Ok Randy, because of your fine review, I just ordered a pair through my Amazon Prime account. Can't wait to hear them and on YOUR good word, I believe they will sound great to my ears 😊!
I had headphones like that when I was quite young. Not sure why we had them, but they were always just sort of “around”, but never used, so I adopted them and truly loved them. It was a sad day when the foam pads wore through and the hard plastic (or metal?) frame began to make them too uncomfortable to wear. I’ve always respected Koss.❤
This really hits the mark for CHEAP AUDIO MAN! Happy Holidays everyone!
I use these a lot. I upgraded the pads to orange for that retro look. The kph30i are pretty good too especially when you do the large Grado pad mod for $10
I got the kph30i with the large Grado pad modification ! Great sound and comfort 👍🏻
Been using the KTXPRO1s for over 20 years... My first pair were branded Optimus, from good ole Radio Shack! 40mm titanium diaphragms give you a bit of bass. Sound pretty good for a knock around set for podcasts and around the house tunes.
I has a pair of the top end Optimus with the open vents. I don't remember the #. I think it was 70 or 80. I can't get the same treble response on newer pricier pairs. It could be high frequency hearing loss w age.
The KPH40's have features you haven't touched on. You can get USB or Livewire cables for them, which makes me think that they'd be driven digitally direct from your device with no additional D/A converter or dongle needed.
For years my daily driver has been the PortaPro. Now it's my "on the road" headphone, and every time I use it I am blown away by how good it sounds. It was a class C recommended component by Sterophile for a while, if memory serves. If you haven't tried them, you should. The only drawback is their headband can grab longer hair.
I’m very pleased with these Koss headphones. Thanks for the recommendation!
When I worked at Radio Shack in the early aughts… Koss made a RS branded titanium driver headphone that was just awesome. For $35. Used them on the train every day on the El with my iPod on the way to work or school. My first foray into satisfying cheap audio.
Had some open back pioneers in the 1980's with mylar drivers, best ever, took forever to blow them up, they sounded amazing
I have that headset. I also had Koss 4As, the HV1a, which were my favorite, and the Red Devils which my dog enjoyed eating.
Been using the 30's forever, just good to have around. I also did Zeos' earpad mod.
Currently have the CLEAR ones that were a big deal last year. They look awesome!
I love these! I'd love to find some loud speakers with the same sound signature.
Koss headphones bang out..they had a foldable pair with blue drivers...wow way better than these market loving fan boy brands could wish to sound like
I pair my collection of KPH40's (with Yaxi Pads) with my Periodic Rhodium DAC or with my Topping NX7. It's bloody unbelievable. Great content lad.
I have the Koss Porta Pro and they they rock. I'll bet these do also
Radio Shack used to rebrand Koss headphones under the Optimus brand name and I used to Love the Optimus Pro 25's and then later the Radio Shack Pro 35's. Back in the 90s they were $40 but you could get them for $20 on sale. Best pair of headphones I've ever owned.
I have Koss Porta Pro Classic and they sound fantastic!
I’ll be picking up a pair of these asap!
I was about to skip the sponsor but when I heard the words Japanese Knives I was super happy. Will try the headphone for sure! I usually use wireless earbuds but I need headphone with wire for something specific and I am really greatful to have found these infos. Thanks a bunch.
I think I'm going to get a pair. I have a Quadlex Dongle DAC and it's excellent. It has, I think, 2000 sound Profiles in the multiples for virtually every headphone made in the last 20 years. And I know the Loss are in there. So, deficiency wise I bet something can be found that may correct those minor issues. Oh, and I ware my Meze 99 Noir's for hours and find no fatigue at all. Though if it's a hot day and the air's not one my ears sweat a tad.
Love the Jerad Polin t-shirt, love your laid back smooth style too, great channel
These are the best stocking stuffer for families. They're just so good for so little money.
the sound is really good and easy to drive with outstanding comfort like wearing nothing at all.
Great info...
Somebody tell this man about the ksc75's.
Lacks bass and headband, so kph40 is the better deal unless u like brighter sound
I bought a pair of cerwinvvega bookshelf speakers yesterday they are the L7 model and I was so suprised!!!
Thanks mate, my KPH40 just arrived on your recommendation and they are every bit as good as you say :) Interesting that you have to twist the connection for the right sound. But it's a wonderful 3D sound and more comfy to wear than my Sennheisers. My only worry is that the speaker connection looks a bit fragile and I bought these for travel.
Over the years I've had two Sennheiser headphones (HD 414 with the yellow foam pads and PX 100, very similar but all black) I carried with me to work along with my Aiwa cassette player and later (1988) Sony D10 CD player and would listen while I was at lunch. When the iPhone first came out that became my source for music at lunch and I was still using the Sennheisers. The Sennheiser's were light, folded flat and would easily fit in a shirt pocket. Oh, and they sounded GREAT!
I still have my Dad's Koss cans from the early 70s in storage. I thought about contacting Koss to see if they could be refurbished.
I use mine hooked up to my schiit stack. I went with POYATU pads off amazon. They won't fade or fall apart like yaxxi pads. I have heard quite a few ~$300 headphones and don't use them anymore. I find I rock out more with my KPH-40s. One thing worth mentioning is that these do have less distortion at louder volume and can handle bass better than the porta pro and KPH-30i. A lot of people think that they already have something comparable with one of these older products. Not so. Go buy the KPH-40.
How thick are the Poyatu pads compared to stock? I’ve seen some people say Yaxi pads can alter the sound because they’re thicker
Got kph30i on Z's recommendation, loved those..
Will buy these soon..
Koss was a company that personally used in the '70's. They sounded great.
It's cool that you are impressed with them😎👍
It’s great to discover this kind of products.
I was looking for a high level headphones, testing Hifiman Ananda and Arya, Meze 109 Pro and Audeze LCD-2C… and finally zip bought the AKG K712 Pro that are in Amazon at 198 €… more expensive than the Koss, but a bargain for what you get.
Your Cat Stevens and Chris Isaac are so spot on I expect you're going to get a copyright flag
☺️
My daughters use these instead of earbuds/ air pods, with the after marker pads. They’re not just thicker for comfort, the extra foam opens up the sound stage to AWESOME results. Like “whooaaa!!!”. That’s how they measure, officially.
My favorite DAC/Amp with these is the Oppo HA2 se. Next is just using the lightning cable and plugging directly to my iPhone.
PortaPro for life! I’m guessing the drivers are similar/same. I’ve loved the PortaPro for years and have replaced a few pair via the lifetime warranty. Paid about $8 for the replacements (shipping) and never had any issues with the process. Earbuds don’t work for me during exercise cuz I sweat and they pop out… PortaPros are the only things that stay on my head. I can’t name a better bang for the buck
I have using some version of the Porta/Sporta Pros for the last 20 years.....still the best value in mid-fi audio
They are but way more comfortable - especially if you put the after market ear pads on them. They REALLY open up when you do.
I have yet to hear the 40's but i have the kph30i's with the better Grado pads (both thanks to Zeos). I have a bunch of other headphones including the Ananda's and i swear i find myself reaching for the Koss's just as much and lately even more so. Have a tube buffer after DAC and before a Loki eq and then into a Xduoo MT602. Sounds soooooo good and are soooo comfortable! Makes me def question some of my higher end headphone purchases. Incredible bargain.
Question to people that own/owned the 30's and now the 40's, are these a sonic improvement or just a side step?
It is strange that similar Koss drivers sound different in each headphone implementation? I'm hard of hearing and find the Koss KSC75s ($15), that uses the titanium coated driver, emphasise the midrange and improves speech intelligibility. I use them every day and highly recommend them. I tried the KPH30i ($20), that uses the plain driver, it has a darker nature and is NOT my goto headphone. I'm presently listening on Philips SHP9500 ($70), they are a hidden gem that has a similar sound to the best Sennheisers and I highly recommend them. All prices are at time of purchase.
KOSS KSC75 fan here. Have had half a dozen pair over the years.
Been a Koss shill for about 2 years now. I have the Porta Pro, KSC75s, KPH30i, KPH30i clear, KTXPRO1, and KPH40. All great. I think the worst of the bunch is probably the porta pro I guess. The best to my ear is easily the KSC75. Stellar headphone. Actually my favorite headphone. 85% of the time I’d take it over my Moondrop Variations, HD600, or Focal Elex.
Other companies gotta make more on-ear, ultra lightweight headphones because Koss has a stranglehold on that market.
Glad you liked them! They are truly wonderful sounding headphones, very comfortable and portable. It’s about the most astonishing price/performance ratio in all of audio.
You could do me a big favour (if you see this comment and have time). I’m a massive Koss fan too, admittedly only over the last 3 months lol, bought KSC75 in august and have had basically every other model since then. Settled on the KTXPRO1 (because I love how they’re basically KSC75 with the Porta Pro bass).
But I’ve just ordered some KPH40 and I’m really curious how they compare to the KTXPRO1. I’m trying to minimise my gear so I want to just have one ideally. So could you say how the KTXPRO1 and KPH40 compare at all? And which is your favourite and why?
Shoutout to the Koss KSC75X also. Same deal, they sound so much better that they should for the money. Just blew my mind.
Reminds me of the Radio Shack something-something-50 from about 20 years ago. Same form factor and great sound at about $40.
I'm quite happy with my JVC flats, and they were well cheap.
Thanks. Great vid. Gonna check the Koss headphones out. Seen them but kind of discounted them as archaic. Seem perfect for walking. Dude that knife thing is shady.
I actually prefer the older 35 model, but these are still great! I love the utility system that lets you change out the wire for different connections. I just felt the older model was built slightly better and there was not a huge sound improvement moving up to the 40s.
FWIW I have a pair of Koss Electrostatic headphones + koss electrostatic amp. Got them from Massdrop before it got crappy. For $400 for both they sound fantastic and have made me forget about a lot of really expensive headphones I own. I also have some Stax Electrostats that cost 3x the price for maybe a 10% improvement. Also the Koss have lifetime warranty. The frame is largely cheap plastic as long as you're careful all is well and they are so light and comfortable.
Didn’t even watch it all, I’ve been wanting an inexpensive light weight I can just throw under my chair and grab for when somebody says listen to this UA-cam! Thanks brother😊
I paired these with a 9 dollar Ugreen dongle for my phone and they sound about 80 percent as good as my 400 dollar Sen 490 pros with a 200 dollar tube amp and Dac. It really made me question how the hell these things sound this good. I subscribed because all of the things you mentioned about how jumbled these get with busy tracks and the forward low end were spot on, you know your stuff man.
I also recommend the Yaxi porta pro pads for $12.
For me it is PortaPros or nothing. Lifetime warranty. If they break just send them back and they give you a new pair. I’m from Milwaukee I know what I am talking about.
40's are good, but try Koss ksc75 put on a headband with Yaxi pads. Titanium coated driver...better vocal clarity...same great soundstage and imaging. Though I have "better" headphones, I use this everyday, mostly for YT videos and quick checks of new music.
If memory serves, I think the porta pros are the 75s on a headband
@@RobertGerman it's close but Porta Pros use slightly different driver, and it results in sound being different.
@@RobertGerman Porta Pro is much warmer sounding, while KSC75 is bright-neutral.
If you like these, try the Sennheiser HD-414. 'Open-aire', no back, foam ear pads allow sound to be outside as well as inside . . . ergo, open air designs. More better, for cheap.
Have you tried out the ksc75? I am new to this whole hobby, so I have heard a lot of good stuff about it! Much love ❤️
I have Koss Porta Pro few years, lofentike waranty and is good. Little bit more bass but ok 👍
Cat Stevens 'Wild World' 1970 ,Tea For The Tillerman. One of "Wild One" songs was Bobby Rydell 1960.
Those koss with my brt5 will sound very nice 👍
I've got a pair of Koss with my Panasonic cassette player 😎🤘... The belt clip version 😆
Listening to this review on my own KPH40s. You nailed it, they're the perfect "all day" or "working" headphones. Especially with a set of yaxxi pads.
Only Koss headphones I have had from about 1972 were electrostatic and weighed a ton!
These are super efficient.....even a little power makes the Koss' sing.
now try the koss pro/4 AAAs. I had to replace the muffs on mine as the originals were stiff as a rock other then that they sound fantastic
Thanks Much !
Yes they are new. The KPH30i is good to (arguably better) . They are classic. The 30i is definitely more comfortable. Yes both the 30 and 40 don't go well with amps. They don't need it and amps even hurt them.
Yep….only headphones I have and will ever need. Thanks Z
Koss makes the best budget headphones. If you can, try the Porta pros, the KSC75 and the kph30i.
These are kind of a simplified version of the PortaPros. For the price, they sound amazing. I have phones that are 3x the price and sound much worse.
KPH40i pairs well with Schiit Fulla OG, it's my work setup. I can enjoy hifi music and still be able to hear my coworkers if needed.
They also like tubes. A $2k Schiit Folkwang + 10 Philips 7062 tubes, another $1, makes KPH40i even better.
they definitely take to any form of sparkle/veil/warmth better than my other options...though when i run a more centered/staging oriented tubes the sheer lack of "fun factor" makes them lack personality vs how they scale with tuned/tubes. Though the volume/imaging is pretty ideal with some image/staging oriented tubes. Its what i get bc i got the 1 more triple driver/on ears....and the sparkle from the tubes my hybrid came with needed to be restrained. While being able to push more power/volume minus the expense/cost of some sibulance/veiled aspects. If i had better gear/cans id probably care more about tube rolling or go for a full tube amp. I do have hd58x and 7xx cans but over time i like something a little more fun/light weight that still packs a punch
Right on Randy!!! I have the lower end model the KPH30icl, in the clear color and they seriously sound fantastic. Any suggestions on a budget over the ear/larger head phone around 100 to 150 ish range? Great review! Thanks again brother!!!
Koss were a top of the line headphones back in the 1970’s. I bought a pair of their headphones that are similar to the Pro 4a. Loved them. I had them until a few years ago. The liquid-filled ear cushions went bad so I threw them away. Later I found out that Koss guaranteed them for life, and I could have sent them in for a new pair. Damn.
I use these on both my Topping and tube amps - all wow
Hey, test drive the "TD" series Koss', you'll love them. They're 5 to 10 bucks less than the set in this video, and are noise cancelling ear covers...
Yessss finally.
Love your channel! What are your thoughts on table top speakers like the klipsch three II or the marshall woburn? Not many people talk about them.
You're just now finding out about those kph40s? They sound even better when you find a 4 pole 2.5mm aux cable to run them on a balanced amp.
There was a cheap pair of AKG headphones I had about 10 years ago - they were $22, I think? They look very similar to this Koss model. And they sounded amazingly good, as you describe these. The issue in the end was the foam pad disintegrated - my spouse though came to my rescue, by crocheting new ear pads. And then part of the band broke. They lasted several years of hard use, and they sounded really good, indeed.
Too late for you of course, but Amazon third-party sellers sell cheap third-party foam pads (bought some for my PortaPros a few times).
Yeah, those foam pads are definitely the weak point. I had to stop using my headphones for that reason, but the Internet didn’t exist at the time, so replacement parts weren’t really an option.
AKG ACOUSTICS K130 ?
@@williamnaman3570 I don't remember the model - but I don't think it was that?
@@SyzygyNoon KOSS sell replacement ear pads in strip packs, not sure if they did back then, though (they aren't that cheap).
Ditto on the PortaPros. Those are a fantastical deal as well.
Basically Portapros with a lightweight headband it appears. I love Portapros but have blown them watching tv/movies on my laptop. Normal even bassy music is fantastic, but for some reason the rumble of ultra low frequency content in movies etc seems to just fry them.
Believe it or not, the very cheap JVC HAS160 'Flats' are far more robust and surprisingly good once you EQ out the boxiness. Far tougher drivers than Portapros.
Love your channel. I like that you are still recommending the Sony SS-CS5s. I own three pair.
Cat Stevens' song is Wild World. Were you testing us, sensei?
I watched Zeos review sometime ago and purchased the koss KPH30iRB with inline microphone and modified them with the Vever/Grado large pads and was very satisfied with the sound and comfort of the set.
Growing up in Europe in the 80s, I remember koss been a very popular headphone brand in high school
and as a matter of fact a lot of kids that were sporting high end Sony Walkmans, would upgrade to koss headphones!
So when I watched Zeos take on koss I had to get it out of my system and add a pair of koss to my headphone collection and
Was very happy I did!
Also glad to see your positive thoughts on them as I value your opinion very much!
Thanks for reviewing koss !
I would buy those just for the 80s nostalgic reverence..
You can also get a 2.5mm to 2.5mm cable to make them balanced and the more power makes a difference. They scale insanely well with more power and higher end equipment. Also $10 for after market yaxi pads are a huge upgrade.
I need to try that out. I’m really impressed
Great call, the "scalability" of these headphones is impressive.
@@shawnwilliams7021 Every piece of equipment I get I make sure to try the kph40 on it.
the scalability and even EQ potential with a BT/DAC portable dongle/dac....makes other options/portables EASILY an afterthought. They scale TOO damn well and can be EQ to be sufficient in a multitude of GENRE/mixes....it is almost insulting to use a different "setup" on the go even at home at times. It also is worth while to have prior to getting "DEEP" into gear/can investment....it easily showcases that there isnt much "MORE" out there to strive spend for around the BEND other than affirmation bias.....and GEAR pairing XD and tube rolling for that added placebo/for science aspect that separates listening for enjoyment...vs being completely objective.
Koss locking you into their proprietary 2. 5 mm cable $$$ BS.
My first set of phones were Koss. I couldn't afford decent speakers but I could afford those
Now a holding company is renting out the name. I hope they are at least decent phones. Koss made some great cans back in the day.
man you weren't kidding, these cheapies punch way above their price point! I bought a set after watching this to run with my portable cassette players i refurbish but for giggles i plugged them into a Schiit Asgard driven by a Bifrost 2/64 DAC and WOW they sound pretty darn good. Reminds me of an inexpensive Sony on ear headphone i bought back in the 90's that i was never able to find a comparable after i wore them out.
I bought sets of the Koss for my kids for Christmas now as well. Awesome you found something where the Sound Quality to Price ratio is off the charts. You outta do a video testing out Koss's range of low cost headphones, be curious if a few dollars more buys much more.
If you're curious about the other cheap Koss models you could try the KSC75, on the clips and on a headband for two different sounds. They might just blow your mind.
@@JonnyMorgan18I’ll check them out. I actually returned two of the KPH40 I hadn’t opened yet and replaced with the Porta Pros after a friend recommended and on sale. Pretty much same sound but adjustable fit and more retro design, I think the kids will really like.
Funny, I was going to say the same thing Zeos has those and loves them...
You should check out the Koss UR40 headphones. They are the most comfortable headphones I've ever worn! An they're also a great deal for about $40!
I bought these headphones a while, and was not too happy with them. Try the the Koss KPH30i..........now those are really impressive for about the same price! 🎶🥁🥁🎶🎧🎧
