I loved that it would have been so easy for him to have written an album dripping with anger after 9/11 but instead he came out with a message of loving the ones you're with while you have them and tolerance.
The Rising is one of the few songs which genuinely gives me chills when I hear it.

Lyrics: Bruce Springsteen - Lonesome day
    Once I thought I knew
Everything I needed to know about you
Your sweet whisper, Your tender touch
But I didn't really know that much
Joke's on me, It's gonna be okay
If I can just get through this lonesome day
Hell's brewin' dark sun's on the rise
This storm'll blow through by and by
House is on fire, Viper's in the grass
A little revenge and this too shall pass
This too shall pass, I'm gonna pray
Right now all I got's this lonesome day
    It's allright It's allright It's allright
Better ask questions before you shoot
    Deceit and betrayals bitter fruit
It's hard to swallow, come time to pay
That taste on your tongue don't easily slip away
Let kingdom come I'm gonna find my way
    Through this lonesome day

I'll never forget our times playing pool in our back room having some drinks and putting "Streets of Philadelphia" on repeat, he loved that song. He was just glad I was there and had no clue of the memory he was creating for me. I Miss him. From the date of your post she would be 22 now.. if it's been a while, you guys should make time for another ride!

Only a class act LIKE Springsteen would come out with his first album with the E Street band since '84 right after 9-11 and uplift anyone who felt pain on that day.

    • @M42KO
      @M42KO 4 роки тому +6

This song is actually a pretty harsh rebuke of American society past 9-11. It's about how people shouldn't be so quick to turn to war and hate and distrust as a result of being hurt. It's essentially about him feeling lonesome in the world in which everyone around him is turning their grief into hate. Such a well-written song though, blows my mind how it's not considered one of his greatest.

    • @fd9447
      @fd9447 3 роки тому +4

The entire album's feel was the perfect music for life right after 9/11. It could have been overly sappy or overly depressing (like so many of the other songs that came out right then). But it wasn't.
The album seemlessly goes from from upbeat songs about living to some very depressing and specific songs about 9/11 (Into the Fire and Empty Sky are the first two that come to mind) and back again. It makes you think about how horrible it was but manages to be very palatable mixed in with your other favorite Springsteen songs. Only a great songwriter like Bruce could do this so well.
And this was the perfect song to lead off the album.

I lost my teaching job, defaulted on student loans, about lost my dad, got fired from another two jobs I was working that year and about lost my aunt Candy..You name it and well it happened.. This song gave me much needed uplifting and hope during that year. This song still has the same power today and when I have had a rough day this is my go to song!!! ;) Thanks for such a powerful and uplifting song about love, faith and hope!!! I am not a big Boss fan but the best songs of BRUCE are....
      tunnel of love
      atlantic city
      hungry heart
      glory days
      dancing in the dark
      rosalita
      the fever
      maybe "out in the street"
and the last great song he did was ...... Lonesome Day
and yes i think the cd "born to run" was overproduced and overwrought; most of bruce's songs work too hard to be anthems and are laced with pomposity. But sure he's a very talented songwriter.

@@deanrichards5223 I certainly hate Queen for their pomposity more and Freddy was just not gifted with great songwriting ability like Bruce and was always socially distant from his band and fans .. the really guy was not really a nice guy. Born to Run is the last album of Bruce's I'd take to a desert Island. 😵😵😵😵

Oppothumbs M dislike Queen with a vehement passion, never have such a talented bunch of musicians and arguably THE best frontman ever, made such a bunch of dog sh*t music.
I love Bruce, I love Motown, I love hip hop, grew up on rockabilly and country from my father, so not just a Bruce-rider. Can not stand Queen 🤬

Baby, once I thought I knew
Everything I needed to know about you
Your sweet whisper, your tender touch
But I didn't really know that much
Joke's on me, it's gonna be okay
If I can just get through this lonesome day
    Lonesome day
Hell's brewing, dark sun's on the rise
This storm will blow through by and by
House is on fire, viper's in the grass
A little revenge and this too shall pass
This too shall pass, darling, yeah I'm gonna pray
Right now, all I got's this lonesome day
    Lonesome day
    It's alright, it's alright, it's alright, yeah
    It's alright, it's alright, it's alright, yeah
    It's alright, it's alright, it's alright, yeah
    It's alright, it's alright
Better ask questions before you shoot
    Deceit and betrayal's bitter fruit
It's hard to swallow, come time to pay
That taste on your tongue don't easily slip away
Let kingdom come, I'm gonna find my way
    Yeah, through this lonesome day
    Lonesome day
    Lonesome day
    Lonesome day
    It's alright, it's alright, it's alright, yeah
    It's alright, it's alright, it's alright, yeah
    It's alright, it's alright, (it's alright, yeah)
    It's alright, (it's alright, it's alright, yeah)
    It's alright, it's alright, (it's alright, yeah)
    It's alright, it's alright, (it's alright, yeah)
    Lonesome day
    Lonesome day
    Lonesome day

I love The Boss's music videos when it comes to using live vocal tracks. It's more grounded and immerses you in with him.
