    To correct Owen, beeswax is actually better at sticking to metal and mixing with oils than paraffins, hence not needing specific additives. The main if not the only reason against beeswax is cost and inability for manufacturers to put 10x margin on it.
    Also its composition is not that easy to control at industrial scale. And we don't want to sell/buy ocassionally products of brand A under a name and at a price of brand B or god forbid C.

    • @edymarin7781
      @edymarin7781 3 місяці тому

      Beeswax is also very different, chemically speaking. While paraffin wax is just a bunch of long chain hydrocarbons (only carbon and hydrogen), beeswax is a biological product which is made of molecules similar to fats (I'mmtalking about esters). Those esters cannot be controlled, can degrade easily when subjected to the stresses of a chain, and can react in unpredictable ways that can make very big differences between batches.
      Also, it is much softer, so it can be more easily squeezed out of a chain under load.

    • @feedbackzaloop
      @feedbackzaloop 3 місяці тому

      @@edymarin7781 exactly, you are putting perspective behind better adhesion (oxygen group helps with polarization) and problems with industrial scale (those esthers, of which are actually only a handful, are relatively stable and rather belong to fatty alcohols - not like typical trigliceride fats - but still require extra control in distillation if you obtain beeswax naturally or harder to synthesize compared to paraffins if you want to go all way petrochemically).
      As per softness, it's not that bad, while paraffins live on a wide scale and those found in drip-on solutions solidify to even softer butter-like consistensy. Immersion formulations are harder though, but also have tendency towards embrittlement what is not optimal too.

  • @andyarchitect
    @andyarchitect 3 місяці тому +4

    Immersive waxing is fantastic and much less of a faff overall than having to periodicly degrease and clean a whole drivetrain. Just give the chain a quick rinse in hot water in a jar, then put it in the wax pot, and switch it on. Come back once its melted and you have a clean chain that looks like new. Bee's wax however is probably not the best wax to be using. I'm no expert on bee's wax but I'm under the impression its a fairly soft wax compared with a food grade paraffin wax which is the recommendation for trying immersive waxing on a budget. A softer wax will be less good at resisting absorbsion of grit and dirt so may become more abrasive and could gunk up the drivetrain, where as a harder wax will flake off rather than build up.

    • @edymarin7781
      @edymarin7781 3 місяці тому

      Even the namebrand chain waxes are not that expensive if you consider how little of it is used with each waxing, and how much you save compared to wet lubes.
      And yes, it is totally not a faff. If you ride in only dry conditions, just a cloth with some isoprolyl alcohol is enough to clean tge dust off of the chain before putting it in the wax

    Weren't designed to work together? All mineral oil brakes are designed under same umbrella of standards, governing seal materials and clearances. Differences are marginal and still within the standards.
    One can even do a TRPrickstuff and fill it with Caterpillar steering hydraulic fluid, would still work.

    within the same frame size, handlebar fit also makes a huge difference. with good fitting bars I can lap bike park top to bottom nonstop, with bad ones I had to stop after each section of trail because my lower back hurt so bad. played around with handlebar width and rise and got rid of riding pains. • @LaurentiusTriarius
    @LaurentiusTriarius 3 місяці тому +1

    Anna about the rockgarden issue isn't not about the tire, it's my rims that get eaten up!
    I'm missing chunks of aluminium and carbon 😂
    Immersive wax is not for roadies only and it's just PTFE powder, pure parrafin wax and pure paraffin oil.
    + The manufacturer secret sauce (additives yes) but often there's not much to it it's about the ingredients ratio..

    • @feedbackzaloop
      @feedbackzaloop 3 місяці тому +2

      So use a narrower rim then! 2,3" on a 30mm is a rather square fit. Also, it's mountainbiking: scratches and dents happen.
      And car tyres don't have a dedicated lip to protect the rim, it's just their construction to hold shape.

    • @edymarin7781
      @edymarin7781 3 місяці тому

      A lot of lubricants are switching away from PTFE for a lot of reasons (most important being the environmental impact, but the efficiency is also a part of that) to better stuff, like molibdenum or tungsten disulfide.

    • @feedbackzaloop
      @feedbackzaloop 3 місяці тому

      @@edymarin7781 efficiency and cost were the reasons MoS2 was replaced with PTFE (it has higher shear strength and therefore shows better efficiency in high stress applications, also better thermal and chemical resistance which is unnecessary in cycling). WS2 is quite similar to MoS2 in that sense. So it's all about evironment.
      Ideal would be graphite (and there are such lubes), but it is an absolute mess practically impossible to clean.

    120-120 is enough for most occasional bikepark riders in the flatter countries. Don't waste money and weight (and materials) for (on 🍟) stuff you don't need. I. e. don't buy a bulldozer when all you need is a shovel and a medium sized, 10 liter/litre 🍟 bucket :) Get better brakes and better wheels & tires (tyres 🍟) first.

    I know people are trying to be eco conscious but there's a reason we don't use bee's wax, hemp, or corn oil to lube a bike chain. Unless you just really like replacing components... Which were also mined and have been manufactured probably using the things your trying to avoid in the process material removal. There's reducing your carbon footprint and then there's cutting your feet off. 😂
    I promise... Your chain lube is doing less harm to the environment than watching this video on the Internet. 🤦

    #ASKGMBNTECH Love the video. Just built my first bike from scratch from just a Trek frame. It was a very satisfying learning experience. But my question is as I want to build another bike from components leftover. I am really in between sizes so opted for a small frame as for the trails with drops etc felt like it would give me more confidence. But now scanning the 2nd hand market for frames should I be going for a medium sized frame as there seems more medium frame choices for creating a MTB/road invention with rigid fork as I am really in-between sizes. Thanks guys
