  • The Kawasaki KZ1300 is one of few production motorcycles to feature an inline-six engine. This motorcycle is often overshadowed by the Honda CBX. But is it a better motorcycle than CBX?

    I rode a Z1300 in the UK back in 1982, at the time I had a Kawsaki Z1000J, it was a fun experience to ride one and I'm for ever grateful to the person who generously let me ride it for some distance, but I can't say beyond the fact it was a 6 cylinder motorcycle and therefore by it's very nature exciting to try, that it really did anything for me, it was a very smooth ride and you could feel the weight, but lacked anything to create excitement. I went away thinking how much more I liked my Z1000J, much tauter handling and a better power delivery for me.

      There's something very satisfying when riding your CBX on an interstate, and the guy in the car next to you rolls his window down just to listen. Honda developed an exhaust for the CBX that captured the sound of the F-4 phantom....I wish I could hear THAT!! Other motorcycles are manufactured...Hondas are ENGINEERED!

    My father owned the touring version with full fairings, saddle bags, and a top case. It was the heaviest bike I've ever ridden. Years later, I owned a naked KZ1300 with a great sounding 6-into-1 exhaust system. With lower bars and a GPZ style cafe fairing it looked good too. The weight wasn't terrible once you were rolling but just pushing it out of the garage was tricky because it was so tall and carried it's weight so high up on the bike. I miss the sound but that's about it!

    Back in the early 80's when I lived in Dallas I went on a ride with 3 others, one of whom was the Honda dealer from the north side of town. His CBX had a 6 into 1. What a glorious sound, as good as any Ferrari. I've never heard a KZ1300 with a 6 into 1. I guess I'll have to reserve judgement until I hear one in person.

    I bought a 1979 KZ1300 A model in the same dark green colour in the spring of 1980 it was slightly used from the BMW dealer. I was living on the west coast in Vancouver BC and the previous owner had bought it new from Abbotsford Kawasaki. Apparently this first owner had a job on Vancouver Island with a 40 mile gravel stretch which the KZ1300 did not do well on. He had traded it in on a Russian copy of a WWII BMW with a sidecar for the gravel. The big KZ seat height was 32 inches standing. You needed to be tall with long legs so you could stop with both feet on the ground (I'm 6 foot 3 inches). There were a few of these 'A' models around on the west coast and all the riders were tall. The Canadian model had no emission equipment compared to American model but all ratings were the same. A wonderful bike in the mountains, didn't like city driving particularly on a hot day and was best on the highway over 70 mph.

      But they both were intended and loosely hyped to be the fastest thing on two wheels you could buy off the showroom floor in late 1978. The CBX in particular massively upstaged the poor, un-loved workhorse XS11.

      @@scottb8175 The big Yamaha was a good bike. I was under age to legally ride on the road back then, but the smaller triple cylinder Yamahas were a nice bike to ride that I liked quite a bit. Good power, with a nice sound, smooth and shaft drive. An older friend stored one in our garage, and when I was 14, I used to ride the thing everywhere! An 850 Midnight Special in the black and gold. Let me tell you, I felt like King S**t riding that around town! It was new at the time. The good old days!

      @@hugejohnson5011 I always liked the look and sound of the XS triples, especially the Midnights, but I have to say mechanically they weren't very good or well designed. Ever had a clutch or final drive apart on one? What an ass-backward, weird and awkward design. The whole engine was like that, too. Complexity for no good reason, with many more and strange parts than needed to get the job done, IMO. Even more so than the infamous Honda CBX or Kawasaki z1300. Kawasaki and Suzuki's 750 4's had way fewer, simpler, and better engineered parts than the XS 3's. And, even for the era, the triples were definitely on the overweight and slow side. I recently had a mint (appearing) candy red 78 XS750 Special in my shop. Unfortunately, it had overheated and spun a rod bearing. With both new and used-but-useable spare parts being practically non-existent for the XS750, 850, and even the 1100 (the 1100 was in production until at least 1985), the owner had no real economical alternative but to part it out and scrap what was left over......

Had an APW fork brace , which helped but , with stock brakes and std frame , It went like stink , wheelied for no reason at all apart from because it could , had no brakes and , with all that power , even less handling , but man it was fun , I jumped off the merry go round before I fell off , thats why I am still alive today !

The 400 supersport I won't include. But comparing Any other 750 I've owned, Yamaha, Kawasaki, or Honda. This bike was overlooked by me in 82. But I'm grateful I came across it. I was looking for a Honda, then the Suzuki appeared. I'm still impressed at how smooth it is. My hands don't fall asleep, requiring an unwanted stop. It's underated by most reviewers now, & it's price. . Then again they've never ridden one.

  • @scottb8175
    @scottb8175 2 роки тому +7

    To each their own, but I think the CBX has a slightly better sounding exhaust because it revs thousands higher than the z1300. I've revved a CBX to 14,000 rpm (accidentally - long explanation, but I was distracted) and it lived on. I very much doubt any stock z1300 could survive over 11,000. My pick of best sounding multi-cylinder bikes is probably a tie between the CBX, the Aprilia V-4, and the cross plain R1. Of course, this is coming from someone who likes the sound of Honda's early V-4's, too.

    It should be noted that the Kawasaki’s three carburetors were a disaster. They employed cast in passages inside the carburetor that became clogged with fuel deposits and impacted the control of idle and slow speed jetting causing the bike to be near unridable in some cases. The older the bike became the worse the condition became. I spent many long weekends trying to get it right for one owner and just couldn’t solve the problems. Finally letting the carb bodies sit in a parts ultrasonic cleaning bath with diesel fuel partially fixed the issue temporarily. Eventually Kawasaki solved the issue with later models using fuel injection. This was in the touring model with full fairing.

    When You talk about more technically advanced, the CBX was light-years ahead of the BIG TURD Kawi, it, for the most part, was a Touring machine, the CBX has a race bred engine derived from a real life race bred motorcycle, the CBX would run circles around that 1300 Kawi any way ya wanted to race. To say because the Kawi was water cooled made it more advanced, is like saying so is a GoldWing!!
    The 1300s were a very weak build, not standing up to race like abuse, and quite often, the engines had lower end breaking issues. I was well into Motorcycling during this heyday of Beautiful Bikes, the Kawasaki was not even in the same realm as the Honda CBX..
    That said, all of the manufacturers built some beautiful great performing bikes, but none were, and most likely ever will be the Advanced Masterpiece that the Honda CBX was in its day...

    Compare a Benelli Sei, CBX and KZ1300, they all have different firing orders and different exhaust notes. The Benelli at 16,000 RPM is BY FAR the sexiest as the CBX nor KZ will reach 11,000, but not one person in ten thousand has HEARD a Benelli while CBX and KZ13's are common as rats! I had the great fortune to ride all of these bikes, as well as a Mike Hailwood Edition Ducati and many other of their contemporaries. Being short of leg, some were a challenge, but for a great SPORT bike, the MH Ducati and a twisty road are great! I prefered a Guzzi to a BMW R-90, and two-up the 1200 Aspencade was the best way to cover Interstate on two wheels made! The late '70's early '80's was great time for cycles and less for poseurs!

Put all three side by side in top gear at 40 mph and nail the throttles, and the CBX would be last, the z1300 only a bike length or so ahead of it, and the XS11 would be 4 or 5 bike lengths ahead of the z1300 in the first 5 seconds...Yes, real world results back in the day....(Then the GS1150E, 1100 Sabre, and V-Max showed up and torque-kicked all our asses to Mars).

      @scottb8175 2 роки тому +1

      @@ekspatriat Well, I've been on dozens of 1000+ cc bikes since 83, and that might be fine if you are the one to get the low gear drop on the unsuspecting whoever you are trying to leave in the dust. Or if you always ride around only in first or second gear like the imbeciles on 600 sport bikes constantly bouncing off the rev limiters and getting pulled over by police.
      But time spent with the clutch pulled in, throttle backed off, or the transmission slopping between gears - is time wasted slowing down, not accelerating. A quick shifter would help a bit, maybe, but is out of character for an old Cogger 80's superbike, IMO.....
      I know as fact - I've been caught many times on fast top end power biased bikes with pitiful mid-range and low end (like the CBX, GPz1100 DFI Uni-Trak, YZR600, etc.) relaxing one or two gears too tall when someone else on a less powerful but higher torque bike (like the early VF750 V-4 and KZ750L3) nails the gas the same or one gear lower than me and leaves me for dead. Then I'm stomping down on the shifter two or three times before I can get on the throttle. By the time I've fanned the clutch, dropped down the gears, and got on the gas, it's already over and they are gone....
      With old bikes that have mountains of torque anytime the tach is above 900 rpm (like my big FJ and GS1150E - from idle to redline the GS positively stomps the sixes and all inline fours of the era except the 86 FJ1200 ), even casually slogging along in top gear, just twist the right grip and hang on....
      No-way no-how is anything like a DFI GPz1100 or CBX going to catch up no matter how fast they stomp down gears.
      Then there were the V-Max, Magna, and Sabre (yes, I've ridden all three). The GS and FJ pulled hard in a roll-on. The V-Max, Magna, and Sabre were another level above them. Opening the throttle stretched your arms, flattened your eyeballs, and left traffic looking like it was going backwards in the mirrors - any rpm, any gear.

      @@scottb8175 Mate you are dreaming in the past.......stretched your arms flattened your eyeballes ...those power and torques dreams are long gone. The bikes you quote are pussies now...SO now you may be terrified by what is available. AND why is an 600 an imbecile when you are just doing the same with lower revs and gears?

Just because people threw header pipes on them and rode them stripped down doesn't mean anything ! You are comparing a SPORT bike , to a touring bike ! If the 1300 was a sport bike it wouldn't have been built with that power robbing shaft drive !
