Does nobody read the bible? The "Rise up... wings like eagles" lyrics are from the Book of Isaiah. The song is about reaching out in despair and being rescued by God. It's one of my very favorite U2 songs. I find it hauntingly beautiful.
Rick Beato has a terrific episode on this song “Drowning Man.” Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/XUx7JPlixzc/v-deo.html “What Makes this melody interesting?.” Beato knows that U2 is a great band that many people hate. Personally I distrust Bono’s neoliberal political tendencies. He’s friends with George W Bush, for example. I hate that “imperial messenger” quality about Bono, just like I dislike Oprah Winfrey for the same reason. But this song is phenomenal. Wow. The whole album “War” (which this song comes from) is a masterpiece.
Yes I really enjoyed Rick's take on the song. As I recall, he was trying to determine what time signature it was in because the instruments seem to be in different areas.
I love that you reacted to this song precisely because so many others are saying they wished you would have reacted to other better known U2 songs. They can go watch those reactions a bunch of times elsewhere. That's the problem with reactors. They all react to the same songs. It's nice that you dug deeper on someone's recommendation. Also, as Rick Beato said, it's a great song. Bono's passion and the simple guitar line( and guitar harmonics) elevate it. It fits well into that album.
The song is very atmospheric, poetic, passionate. It came out during a fraught time in the world -- ala, the Cold War -- and for Europe and Ireland, particularly. When U2 wrote songs about War and strife, they wrote from experience. We used to listen to them not only due to the great Rock sounds they made but also for the authenticity of their message/lyrics. They were raw, aggressive but also sung words of peace, compassion, love, truth and spiritual understanding. Great band!
Well then... What a great time to be living and hearing this song, with all the world in turmoil, it fits perfectly. God bless us, all we can do at this point is hold on tightly to nothing😢

One of U2 s better albums and still a great song...angry young men during trying times in Ireland made for a hard soulful sound. A Request for cool tune by the Extreme - Hole hearted.... thanks
It’s crazy how U2 gets so much hate. Especially after the whole iPhone album fiasco. I get Bono can be kind of annoying, but once you get passed that you’ll realise they’re pretty dope.
I go back & forth with this band. I'm usually down for the Eno - Lanois stuff, but there is no denying the magic that Lillywhite was able to get out of these guys in their earlier years. The sense of urgency is definitely missing in a lot of the later music, but I think that getting older does that.
I think you kinda had to be there. I was crazy about U2 in the early-mid 80s. The music was so powerful and moving. But, unlike a lot of other favorites of the era, I seldom listen to their albums anymore. I'm not sure why. Also, I think this song is much better in the context of the whole album experience. Not so true when an album has only one or two hit tracks. But, when an album all works and flows together it seems like any single song out of context is just prone cause a disappointing listen.
Would you react to these songs? - yesterday when I was young (Roy Clark) - Memories ( Elvis Presley) - the times of your life (Paul Anka) Love your videos!!

100% agree with MAGNETO. I'm a U2 fan and was never really crazy about this song. But Rick Beato's analysis made me appreciate it and them much more, especially since it came so early in their career.
