The "new shooter" series is the best set of blackpowder videos available. I would not advise setting a limit on this effort. I guarantee that your audience will send subjects to you as you go. I personally really enjoy the shots from the range. You may not realize it but you answer a lot of questions in these videos by your actions and your descriptions. I'm sure that I speak for a lot of your viewers when I say that you're a much better "instructor" than you realize. I'm sure that your new channel will be a success!

I really am enjoying your videos. They are very informative. I’ve just recently gained an interest in the flintlock rifle and am working on a purchase. I have a percussion gun already but wanted to try flintlock. You’ve been a real help. Thanks for your time. Keep up the good work

You need to finish up on some of your other videos, specifically Flintlock Squirrel Rifle part 3 where you indicated you would perform barrel coning. There are many people who would like to cone their barrels but are not sure how to do it properly. This would mainly benefit the hunters.

Bob, thanks for all that you do to advance black powder shooting. An idea for a future video that I would be of help is how to tune a new lock. A video of you favorite squirrel recipe would be awesome. Thanks again.

Bob: here are just a few ideas as I think your shows are getting better with each episode. Firstly is I like episodes that deal with only one single topic in detail other than several in lesser detail. An example of a great video was your last one on removing the barrel. Will love to see some hunting videos from your property or in your area (deer, turkey or squirrels). I will go through the early ones and send you my humble thoughts in an e-mail. I really do like the direction you are heading with this series. Summer through fall outdoor videos, late fall and winter the "shop" videos.

Your videos have helped me immensely. They have helped me not only become a better competitive shooter, but also just run-of-the mill shooting including hunting. I will be honest Bobby, at first I thought some of the videos were a little long. However, by showing over-and-over how you load I was able to catch how you cut your patches. That really changed my world in the thickness of patches and lube I used. Where some of your videos are longer, I am able to find parts that show what you are doing in more detail and rewind and watch that part again. I will try to remember some of my questions to you. One I remember was asking you last weekend was why a certain gun shot so low. It was funny because I shot with the builder on Sunday and he told me personally he sighted it in at 45 to 50 grains (antler measure, not precise). You had told me he probably sighted it in at around 50 grains for a .40 cal. Things like that may be shorter videos, but for someone like me that is in between a novice starting out, and a grizzled veteran that has been doing it for 40 years it is helpful. Your videos always seem to have something for all range of expertise of shooters. Keep doing your videos in same format. I know I got bored quickly with some videos I watched starting out in the hobby that treat you like you've never seen a muzzleloader. The laid back, country guy format is a pleasure to watch versus trying to watch a Napoleonic War era shooting drill. I will send you ideas as they come to me. Keep it up, Bobby.

I think you are onto it regarding the hunting videos. Ball placement and why, different ranges, I often step to the left of the cloud of smoke to see if I have hit my game, reloading while keeping an eye on the game if wounded, I always reload straight up, never get caught with an empty gun, pistol as a back up, or for a quick coupe de grace if necessary. I guess a lot of hunting techniques are much the same as with modern arms, eg use of wind, tracking etc.
I like that you are giving clear and concise information in your videos that would get a person who knows nothing of black powder up and running safely. I know that I do certain things now that are unconscious and have been doing them so long I have actually forgotten why ! I loved the strip of ticking off the bag strap, and do it now myself, don't know why I did not think of that years ago !! even us old timers can pick up a thing or two from you !! I think your short intros' are fine, don't ty yourself in knots about them, its about the content and how you are getting the information across.

Maybe a theme song for the intro. Something traditional. You’re in TN so oughta be some good musicians around. Another consideration is having a camera man. Someone creative behind the camera can yield some interesting perspectives. Even minicams or bore cams that show unique angles. Think of ‘Deadliest Catch’, they throw out the treble hook to snag the crab pot and there’s a tiny camera on the hook showing that perspective. I wish I lived next door to ya. I’d volunteer myself.

Bob I'm by no means a new percussion shooter. Been at it since the late 70's. But your videos have really helped me with getting into Flintlocks this year. So keep those coming! What helped me was your videos on how to clean a flintlock, how to store powder, how to take the main spring out, how to knap a flint back to sharpness, all of that "how to stuff". I would love to see more from you about how to work up a load at the range, not just talking about it it but actually showing your system at the range, the affects of different lubes, patch thicknesses, types of patch materials, ball diameters etc. Keep up the good work brother. I'll be checking out your other channel!

Another video idea, “hunting load development” both in ball and shot, finding the best compromise between adequate power and acceptable accuracy, also what realistic (and ethical) hunting ranges you are really looking at with black powder.
EDIT: also shot placement with flintlocks. Do you hold dead on like you normally would or should I aim low/lead more in case they try to duck the shot/extra lock time delay

I think most new shooters should start out with a percussion rifle.
    Can't go wrong with a 50 caliber.

I don't know what is available in kit form now.

Bob, you know I am a fan of your work and I appreciate your unpaid dedication to this channel. I have really enjoyed the format of your videos and I too enjoy a shorter intro. If the video is long, a long intro is okay but if the video is less than 10 mins, we don't need a 90 second intro. I also like your outtro; It bookends the video well. Ive consumed your new shooter series and would still like a video on the strip of pillowticking material on the bag and how to treat it. Also, id enjoy some more "specifics" in videos such as an item number of pillowticking at JoAnns fabric, etc. I purchased some already and I am hoping it works, but I don't know for sure this may seem like spoonfeeding but new shooters are looking for a mentor that knows it all. New shooters need as many variables removed as possible. I like the idea of both stationary camera videos for in the shop or on the range but I think handheld is good for stalking through the woods after deer (how do you do that?) and in-the-field videos. Another video id like would be an in-depth side-by-side look at different styles of rifles, locks, triggers, guards, barrels etc and what style hails from what region and time period. Lastly, videos with accurate titles are awesome. Phew, that's a lot - hope its helpful.

Your doin fine. My suggestion is gonna be a little off the wall geared more towards hunters. Methods to get flintlocks water resistant. Personally, i use a little wax on top of the wood in front of the pan and a cows knee. Granted, not all locks need it, some do for various reasons. Some can be fixed, others must be endured.

I think you are doing good. I like simple intros as well as people’s attention spans are short and anything over a few seconds will loose a lot of people.
One suggestion for new shooters might be focused on organization and consistency with tools and equipment. For example the topic came up this weekend while hunting with a new shooter, he asked me how fast I could shoot a follow up shot in a hunting situation. I told him I felt I could reload and comfortably shoot in less than 30 seconds. He was somewhat surprised and he felt it would take him 3 minutes or longer. He kept his reloading equipment in a backpack. I showed him how my shooting bag is set up for efficiency and how I try to reloaded from the bag, even at the range to build familiarity and efficiency in the field.
One other suggestion, and you have probably already researched all of this but on using GoPros , I am running a hero 7 black. I found that bu batteries would only get me 20 min or so of filming and I was always trying to fiddle with my camera instead of hunting. I am now using a 256 card and an external power bank that hooks on the back of my haversack or shooting pouch. I can turn it on and get 7 or more hours of uninterrupted filmtime depending on if I film in 4K or 2.7. I can get a lot more with 1080. I don’t miss as many opportunities with this set up. Also using the GoPro app I control it through my phone so I can see firsthand what my content looks like without removing my camera. Again you may already be doing this.

    • @BlackPowderTV
      @BlackPowderTV  3 роки тому

Excellent suggestion Allen. It's going on the list. I've been filming with the GoPro at 1080 but realize that I'm going to have to start filming in 4k or 2.7 at a minimum to get a good crop on a lot of the hunting shots. I just picked up a Hero9 and each have two batteries. I'm hoping that will be enough but if you have a suggestion for a good external I'd love to hear it. It's a great idea. I recently picked up a 256 for the 9 because I do run out of card especially when b rolling for the range videos. I'll look into the app for checking my video. That's a great idea. Thanks!

@@BlackPowderTV I run a couple of the generic power banks I purchase off of amazon. I was running a black magic for a while but these have worked just fine for a year or so now. I found one will power my GoPro almost all day so I’m not switching batteries and with a 256 card I can run all day. I like two , just incase one went down on me or if I forget to charge one. I use my phone for filming some too and I like having a little extra power for that. Most of what I shoot is 2.7. I found that I get pretty good detail if I need to crop but still have more storage if needed. I will look forward to seeing what your hero 9 does as I have looked at upgrading, just haven’t pulled the trigger yet. Good luck!!

I do the same as you when I'm searching for info, especially when it's videos, I look for the video that is simple, short yet detailed. You've hit on safety throughout some previous videos... A video detailing why we don't do certain things and, just as important, WHY we don't do certain things might be beneficial.
Telling someone, "do it this way" or, "don't do this" without an explanation of the consequences will often leave people to question the "rules" of safety... Some of us are from Missouri and you have to "Show Me", or at least explain in depth, to get things to sink in.
Viewers who are still alive and have all of their digits will find it easier to hit the LIKE and SUBSCRIBE buttons.😃

I kind of rambled there Bob... something I seem to be good at. I honestly can't remember what you've hit on and what you haven't. But a few things (besides universal gun safety) that should be reiterated...
      • Why we don't dispense powder directly from horn/flask to barrel
      • Why we make certain that projectiles are seated on top of the powder and what can happen if we don't, or if the ball moves off of the charge
I know there are more but safe practices become such a habit that you kind of forget what each one is after a while... You just do it.
One specific instance that does come to mind was where you talked about moving your horn further around your back before firing. That was a good one and one I had never practiced but try to be mindful of now.

  • @paulmcdonald9901

Bob, I like your simple intro format. The flashy stuff that takes 10 seconds to get to the point annoys me.
One thing you might do is back up and redo the intro to new shooters. I had almost zero instruction on my first BP rifle, a .50 cal TC “Hawken.” I had no clue and, as I got the rifle second hand, didn’t even have a book. Pre-internet days at that. A lot of discovery learning. My point is, I had to learn safety, loading, cleaning, maintenance, and how to shoot (different from my service rifle!). You cover all these topics through several separate videos. What you might do is a new intro video that provides an outline. Kind of like a syllabus.
Keep up the great work! I’m really enjoying your videos!
Professor Black Powder - I like it. Your new moniker!
    Regards,
    Paul

I was going to edit my original post here but figured since I had more to say another post would be better. I'm sitting here waiting for the rain to quit or let up enough so I can go hunt. I had an idea for your hunting channel and maybe you've already thought the same. Most hunting shows, whether TV, on the net or even the few magazines left focus on the gear, game and safety but none or almost none talk about ethics.
Maybe make a whole video on the subject or a segment of a video on being an ethical hunter. Not just for the new guys but the old hands, I've seen a lot of long time hunters who aren't ethical. Hunters should respect the animals they hunt whether it's a bird, squirrel, a huge Buck or a Doe, respect them all. They're not just dumb animals. Their senses are superior to ours and just because they don't own or use smart phones doesn't mean they're dumb.
Don't take a shot unless you're certain you have a clear shot in the kill zone for a quick clean kill. Doesn't matter if it's a record book Buck or a Doe, squirrel or bird. I don't know if they still teach that in hunter ed classes but you'd be surprised the number of people in the woods who just don't care. They'll shoot at an animal when they don't have a clear shot or take a shot at an animal running full bore. Sure we all miss but make sure it's a clean miss.
I could go on but another point is respect the land, whether it's public or private. Don't litter, if you brought it with you take it back home whether it's a candy wrapper or lunch bag. If you smoke take your butts with you. Don't damage trees. If you have to climb a fence do so without damaging it. If you open a gate, close it. If you walk through an open gate leave it open. Don't ride your ATV or drive your truck in a way that does any damage etc. You'd think this was all common knowledge but I see hunters of all levels doing unethical things. I guess I should have wrote an email instead.
Rain is letting up, I'm heading to the woods.

    • @BlackPowderTV
      @BlackPowderTV  3 роки тому

That is a very AWESOME suggestion and one I’ve been thinking about how to do without it being a 30 minute lecture. Ethics are absolutely primary. And yes, they do still teach it very strongly in Hunter Education, perhaps even more than they used to. It’s going on my list Rich, and I consider this a video that I need to do fairly soon. Thanks. I am not a new shooter but then again I am in a way. I was given a cheap rifle 30 years ago and I have made due with it. Now. I am older now, my adult boys are becoming more interested and am thinking I would like a nicer rifle. Other then my cheap, generic, non reproduction time period correct rifle I know little to nothing. I would like to know how to choose the right one. What I need for deer elk and moose isn't the same as what I need for squirrels and rabbits or even waterfowl. What is the differences between the Hawken, southern, fowler, Kentucky and the others. I have an idea what I think I want but its based entirely upon appearance and could possible be 100% wrong for what I want it to do. Anyway. If you are going to do a beginner series I think helping people choose the right tools to start the process with would be a help

Choose the one you prefer or feel more comfortable with. If you have wet hunting seasons or mainly shoot birds on the wing, maybe a cap. Good idea for a new shooter video. 👍🏻

Hey Bob! One question I have had is, how the blazes do you tie a powder horn onto a sling so you can have confidence that it will NOT come undone and earn me the nickname, "Leaves Black Trail", from the friends(?) I hunt with. Normally, I just stuff the horn/flask into a pocket... but I would like to graduate to a more traditional method... particularly since I am now the proud owner of a custom made horn by Master Horner Ron Vail and really, Really, REALLY don't want to lose it!

Hey Martin. Do you mean which knot do you use to tie it to the strap and then to the horn bezel so it will hold tight? I use a simple slip knot with leather cordage. Take a length that will attach to your strap and with the excess make a slip knot that will loop over the bevel on your horn. This is actually a great idea for a video.... Thanks, it's going on the list!

I prefer a short intro. I have not been thru your starter videos. But I will say this a "play list" that I could send to someone that has no clue would be nice. I young friend just this past week said "I got this stuff show me how to use it" 95% sure it will be a cva wolf, he just knows it's a CVA.

Hey Swamp, the 'New shooter series' is just that, a place for folks to go who are just getting into black powder shooting and it is for just those who 'have no clue'! Send them over and if you have any suggestions for additional content please post it here!

When it comes to hunting videos here, have at least a 10 second “warning scenes of hunting” “viewer discretion advised” “do not proceed with the video if harvesting or processing of animals effects you”
And I think you should do two versions of every hunting video. A full length un-interrupted version, and a shorter action packed version with some commentary. Kind of like what Ryan gill over at Hunt Primitive has started to do with his videos.

Excellent point! I'm not sure Google will care either way, as they demonitize anything gun related, but it's a solid point and a great idea. It's going on the list! Thanks Sarge!

Skip the intro. I like your intro that you have. The others just make me not want to watch. It’s a waste of time. I forward through any intro and outro.
